Abstract: The strain-induced pseudomagnetic field in supported graphene deposited on top of a nanostructured substrate is investigated by using atomistic simulations. A step, an elongated trench, a one-dimensional barrier, a spherical bubble, a Gaussian bump, and a Gaussian depression are considered as support structures for graphene. From the obtained optimum configurations we found very strong induced pseudomagnetic fields which can reach up to similar to 1000 T due to the strain-induced deformations in the supported graphene. Different magnetic confinements with controllable geometries are found by tuning the pattern of the substrate. The resulting induced magnetic fields for graphene on top of a step, barrier, and trench are calculated. In contrast to the step and trench the middle part of graphene on top of a barrier has zero pseudomagnetic field. This study provides a theoretical background for designing magnetic structures in graphene by nanostructuring substrates. We found that altering the radial symmetry of the deformation changes the sixfold symmetry of the induced pseudomagnetic field.

Abstract: To date, several experimental groups reported measurements of the thickness dependence of T-c of atomically uniform single-crystalline Pb nanofilms. The reported amplitude of the T-c oscillations varies significantly from one experiment to another. Here we propose that the reason for this unresolved issue is an interplay of the quantum-size variations in the single-electron density of states with thickness-dependent oscillations in the phonon-mediated electron-electron coupling. Such oscillations in the coupling depend on the substrate material, the quality of the interface, the protection cover, and other details of the fabrication process, changing from one experiment to another. This explains why the available data do not exhibit one-voice consistency about the amplitude of the T-c oscillations. Our analyses are based on a numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a superconducting slab.

Abstract: The electrical transport properties of a MoGe thin film with a honeycomb array of nanoscale holes are investigated. The critical current of the system shows nonmatching anomalies as a function of applied magnetic field, enabling us to distinguish between multiquanta vortices trapped in the holes and interstitial vortices located between the holes. The number of vortices trapped in each hole is found to be larger than the saturation number predicted for an isolated hole and shows a nonlinear field dependence, leading to the caging effect as predicted from the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. Our experimental results are supplemented by numerical simulations based on the GL theory.

Abstract: The cyclotron resonance energies, the corresponding oscillator strengths, and the cyclotron absorption spectrum for trilayer graphene are calculated for both ABA and ABC stacking. A gate potential across the stacked layers leads to (1) a reduction of the transition energies, (2) a lifting of the degeneracy of the zero Landau level, and (3) the removal of the electron-hole symmetry.

Abstract: The electronic and optical properties of InAs/GaSb core-shell nanowires are investigated within the effective mass k . p approach. These systems have a broken band gap, which results in spatially separated confinement of electrons and holes. We investigated these structures for different sizes of the InAs and GaSb core and shell radius. We found that for certain configurations, the conduction band states penetrate into the valence band states resulting in a negative band gap (E-g < 0), which leads to a conduction band ground state that lies below the valence band ground state at the Gamma point. For certain core-shell wires, only one conduction band state penetrates into the valence band and in this case, a minigap Delta opens up away from the Gamma point and as a consequence the electronic properties of the nanowire now depend on both E-g and Delta values.

Abstract: The electronic properties of boron nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) doped with a line of carbon atoms are investigated using density functional calculations. By replacing a line of alternating B and N atoms with carbons, three different configurations are possible depending on the type of the atoms which bond to the carbons. We found very different electronic properties for these configurations: (i) the NCB arrangement is strongly polarized with a large dipole moment having an unexpected direction, (ii) the BCB and NCN arrangements are nonpolar with zero dipole moment, (iii) the doping by a carbon line reduces the band gap regardless of the local arrangement of the borons and the nitrogens around the carbon line, and (iv) the polarization and energy gap of the carbon-doped BNNRs can be tuned by an electric field applied parallel to the carbon line. Similar effects were found when either an armchair or zigzag line of carbon was introduced.

Abstract: Recent experiments showed that nonuniform strain can be produced by depositing graphene over pillars. We employed atomistic calculations to study the nonuniform strain and the induced pseudomagnetic field in graphene on top of nanopillars. By decreasing the distance between the nanopillars a complex distribution for the pseudomagnetic field can be generated. Furthermore, we performed tight-binding calculations of the local density of states (LDOS) by using the relaxed graphene configuration obtained from atomistic calculations. We find that the quasiparticle LDOS are strongly modified near the pillars, both at low energies showing sublattice polarization and at high energies showing shifts of the van Hove singularity. Our study shows that changing the specific pattern of the nanopillars allows us to create a desired shape of the pseudomagnetic field profile while the LDOS maps provide an input for experimental verification by scanning tunneling microscopy.

Abstract: Spin rotations induced by an ac electric field in a two-electron double quantum dot are studied by an exact numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation in the context of recent electric-dipole spin resonance experiments on gated nanowires. We demonstrate that the splitting of the main resonance line by the spin exchange coupling is accompanied by the appearance of fractional resonances and that both these effects are triggered by interdot tunnel coupling. We find that the ac-driven system generates residual but distinct harmonics of the driving frequency, which are amplified when tuned to the main transition frequency. The mechanism is universal for electron systems in electrically driven potentials and works also in the absence of electron-electron interaction or spin-orbit coupling.

Abstract: The interaction of a wave packet (and in particular the wave front) with a mass barrier is investigated in one dimension. We discuss the main features of the wave packet that are inherent to two-dimensional wave packets, such as compression during reflection, penetration in the case when the energy is lower than the height of the barrier, waving tails, precursors, and the retardation of the reflected and penetrated wave packets. These features depend on the wave-packet envelope function which we demonstrate by considering the case of a rectangular wave packet with sharp front and trailing edges and a smooth Gaussian wave packet. The method of Fourier integral for obtaining the nonstationary solutions is used.

Abstract: The spin-polarized transport property of a diluted magnetic semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas is investigated theoretically at low temperature. A large current polarization can be found in this system even at small magnetic fields and oscillates with increasing magnetic field while the carrier polarization is vanishingly small. The magnitude as well as the sign of the current polarization can be tuned by varying magnetic field, the electron density and the Mn concentration. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Unidirectional chiral states are predicted in single layer graphene which originate from the breaking of the sublattice symmetry due to an asymmetric mass potential. The latter can be created experimentally using boron-nitride (BN) substrates with a line defect (B-B or N-N) that changes the induced mass potential in graphene. Solving the Dirac-Weyl equation, the obtained energy spectrum is compared with the one calculated using ab initio density functional calculations. We found that these one-dimensional chiral states are very robust and they can even exist in the presence of a small gap between the mass regions. In the latter case additional bound states are found that are topologically different from those chiral states.

Abstract: Using highly efficient simulations of the tight-binding Bogoliubov-de-Gennes model, we solved self-consistently for the pair correlation and the Josephson current in a superconducting-bilayer graphene-superconducting Josephson junction. Different doping levels for the non-superconducting link are considered in the short- and long-junction regimes. Self-consistent results for the pair correlation and superconducting current resemble those reported previously for single-layer graphene except at the Dirac point, where remarkable differences in the proximity effect are found, as well as a suppression of the superconducting current in the long-junction regime. Inversion symmetry is broken by considering a potential difference between the layers and we found that the supercurrent can be switched if the junction length is larger than the Fermi length.

Abstract: The scattering of a Gaussian wave packet in armchair and zigzag graphene edges is theoretically investigated by numerically solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for the tight-binding model Hamiltonian. Our theory allows us to investigate scattering in reciprocal space, and depending on the type of graphene edge we observe scattering within the same valley, or between different valleys. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the well-known skipping orbits are observed. However, our results demonstrate that in the case of a pseudomagnetic field, induced by nonuniform strain, the scattering by an armchair edge results in a nonpropagating edge state.

Abstract: The adsorption characteristics of alkali, alkaline-earth, and transition metal adatoms on silicene, a graphene-like monolayer structure of silicon are analyzed by means of first-principles calculations. In contrast to graphene, interaction between the metal atoms and the silicene surface is quite strong due to its highly reactive buckled hexagonal structure. In addition to structural properties, we also calculate the electronic band dispersion, net magnetic moment, charge transfer, work function, and dipole moment of the metal adsorbed silicene sheets. Alkali metals, Li, Na, and K, adsorb to hollow sites without any lattice distortion. As a consequence of the significant charge transfer from alkalis to silicene, metalization of silicene takes place. Trends directly related to atomic size, adsorption height, work function, and dipole moment of the silicene/alkali adatom system are also revealed. We found that the adsorption of alkaline-earth metals on silicene is entirely different from their adsorption on graphene. The adsorption of Be, Mg, and Ca turns silicene into a narrow gap semiconductor. Adsorption characteristics of eight transition metals Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Mo, and W are also investigated. As a result of their partially occupied d orbital, transition metals show diverse structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Upon the adsorption of transition metals, depending on the adatom type and atomic radius, the system can exhibit metal, half-metal, and semiconducting behavior. For all metal adsorbates, the direction of the charge transfer is from adsorbate to silicene, because of its high surface reactivity. Abstract: Themean-field Hubbard model is used to investigate the formation of the antiferromagnetic phase in hexagonal graphene rings with inner zigzag edges. The outer edge of the ring was taken to be either zigzag or armchair, and we found that both types of structures can have a larger antiferromagnetic interaction as compared with hexagonal dots. This difference could be partially ascribed to the larger number of zigzag edges per unit area in rings than in dots. Furthermore, edge states localized on the inner ring edge are found to hybridize differently than the edge states of dots, which results in important differences in the magnetism of graphene rings and dots. The largest staggered magnetization is found when the outer edge has a zigzag shape. However, narrow rings with armchair outer edge are found to have larger staggered magnetization than zigzag hexagons. The edge defects are shown to have the least effect on magnetization when the outer ring edge is armchair shaped. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.085434
