Abstract |
The Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect in square phosphorene quantum rings, with armchair and zigzag edges, is investigated using the tight-binding method. The energy spectra and wave functions of such rings, obtained as a function of the magnetic flux Phi threading the ring, are strongly influenced by the ringwidthW, an in-plane electric field E-p, and a side-gating potential V-g. Compared to a square dot, the ring shows an enhanced confinement due to its inner edges and an interedge coupling along the zigzag direction, both of which strongly affect the energy spectrum and the wave functions. The energy spectrum that is gapped consists of a regular part, of conduction (valence) band states, that shows the usual AB oscillations in the higher-(lower-) energy region, and of edge states, in the gap, that exhibit no AB oscillations. As the width W decreases, the AB oscillations become more distinct and regular and their period is close to Phi(0)/2, where the flux quantum Phi(0) = h/e is the period of an ideal circular ring (W -> 0). Both the electric field E-p and the side-gating potential V-g reduce the amplitude of the AB oscillations. The amplitude can be effectively tuned by E-p or V-g and exhibits an anisotropic behavior for different field directions or side-gating configurations. |

Abstract |
Laser-induced manipulation of magnetism at the nanoscale is a rapidly growing research topic with potential for applications in spintronics. In this work, we address the role of the scattering cross section, thermal effects, and laser fluence on the magnetic, structural, and chemical stability of individual magnetic nanoparticles excited by single femtosecond laser pulses. We find that the energy transfer from the fs laser pulse to the nanoparticles is limited by the Rayleigh scattering cross section, which in combination with the light absorption of the supporting substrate and protective layers determines the increase in the nanoparticle temperature. We investigate individual Co nanoparticles (8 to 20 nm in size) as a prototypical model system, using x-ray photoemission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy upon excitation with single femtosecond laser pulses of varying intensity and polarization. In agreement with calculations, we find no deterministic or stochastic reversal of the magnetization in the nanoparticles up to intensities where ultrafast demagnetization or all-optical switching is typically reported in thin films. Instead, at higher fluences, the laser pulse excitation leads to photo-chemical reactions of the nanoparticles with the protective layer, which results in an irreversible change in the magnetic properties. Based on our findings, we discuss the conditions required for achieving laser-induced switching in isolated nanomagnets. |

Abstract |
The effects of external electric and magnetic fields on the energy spectrum of quantum rings made out of a bidimensional semiconductor material with anisotropic band structures are investigated within the effective-mass model. The interplay between the effective-mass anisotropy and the radial confinement leads to wave functions that are strongly localized at two diametrically opposite regions where the kinetic energy is lowest due to the highest effective mass. We show that this quantum phenomenon has clear consequences on the behavior of the energy states in the presence of applied in-plane electric fields and out-of-plane magnetic fields. In the former, the quantum confined Stark effect is observed with either linear or quadratic shifts, depending on the direction of the applied field. As for the latter, the usual Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are not observed for a circularly symmetric confining potential, however they can be reinstated if an elliptic ring with an appropriate aspect ratio is chosen. |

Abstract |
Atomic scale defects in semiconductors enable their technological applications and realization of different quantum states. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy complemented by ab initio calculations we determine the nature of defects in the anisotropic van der Waals layered semiconductor ReS2. We demonstrate the in-plane anisotropy of the lattice by directly visualizing chains of rhenium atoms forming diamond-shaped clusters. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we measure the semiconducting gap in the density of states. We reveal the presence of lattice defects and by comparison of their topographic and spectroscopic signatures with ab initio calculations we determine their origin as oxygen atoms absorbed at lattice point defect sites. These results provide an atomic-scale view into the semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, paving the way toward understanding and engineering their properties. |

Abstract |
Using density functional theory-based first-principles calculations, we investigate the stacking order dependence of the electronic and vibrational properties of HfS2-Ca(OH)(2) heterobilayer structures. It is shown that while the different stacking types exhibit similar electronic and optical properties, they are distinguishable from each other in terms of their vibrational properties. Our findings on the vibrational properties are the following: (i) from the interlayer shear (SM) and layer breathing (LBM) modes we are able to deduce the AB' stacking order, (ii) in addition, the AB' stacking type can also be identified via the phonon softening of E-g(I) and A(g)(III) modes which harden in the other two stacking types, and (iii) importantly, the ultrahigh frequency regime possesses distinctive properties from which we can distinguish between all stacking types. Moreover, the differences in optical and vibrational properties of various stacking types are driven by two physical effects, induced biaxial strain on the layers and the layer-layer interaction. Our results reveal that with both the phonon frequencies and corresponding activities, the Raman spectrum possesses distinctive properties for monitoring the stacking type in novel vertical heterostructures constructed by alkaline-earth-metal hydroxides. |

Abstract |
Quantum transport in a lattice is distinct from its counterpart in continuum media. Even a free wave packet travels differently in a lattice than in the continuum. We describe quantum scattering in a one-dimensional lattice and illustrate characteristics of quantum transport such as resonant transmission. In particular we examine the transport characteristics of a random trimer model. We demonstrate the real-time propagation of a wave packet and its phase shift due to impurity configurations. Spin-flip scattering is also taken into account in a spin-chain system. We show how individual spins in the chain evolve as a result of a spin-flip interaction between an incoming electron and a spin chain. |

Abstract |
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 99, 155124 (2019)], the spectrum of a regularized Coulomb charge was studied in gapped pseudospin-1 systems generated by an alpha – T-3 lattice. The electronic spectrum was studied as a function of the impurity strength Z alpha. However, the results and conclusions on the behavior of the flatband states as a function of the impurity strength are incomplete. In this Comment, I argue that because of the dispersionless nature of the flatband, the states spread out under the influence of a charged impurity forming a continuous band of states. I support my arguments with explicit numerical calculations which show the emergence of a continuum of states. |

Abstract |
Structural symmetry breaking in two-dimensional materials can lead to superior physical properties and introduce an additional degree of piezoelectricity. In the present paper, we propose three structural phases (1H, 1T, and 1T') of Janus WXO (X = S, Se, and Te) monolayers and investigate their vibrational, thermal, elastic, piezoelectric, and electronic properties by using first-principles methods. Phonon spectra analysis reveals that while the 1H phase is dynamically stable, the 1T phase exhibits imaginary frequencies and transforms to the distorted 1T' phase. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations confirm that 1H- and 1T'-WXO monolayers are thermally stable even at high temperatures without any significant structural deformations. Different from binary systems, additional Raman active modes appear upon the formation of Janus monolayers. Although the mechanical properties of 1H-WXO are found to be isotropic, they are orientation dependent for 1T'-WXO. It is also shown that 1H-WXO monolayers are indirect band-gap semiconductors and the band gap narrows down the chalcogen group. Except 1T'-WSO, 1T'-WXO monolayers have a narrow band gap correlated with the Peierls distortion. The effect of spin-orbit coupling on the band structure is also examined for both phases and the alteration in the band gap is estimated. The versatile mechanical and electronic properties of Janus WXO monolayers together with their large piezoelectric response imply that these systems are interesting for several nanoelectronic applications. |

Abstract |
The influence of a perpendicular magnetic field on the binding energy and structural properties of excitons, trions, and biexcitons in monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is investigated. The stochastic variational method (SVM) with a correlated Gaussian basis is used to calculate the different properties of these few-particle systems. In addition, we present a simplified variational approach which supports the SVM results for excitons as a function of magnetic field. The exciton diamagnetic shift is compared with recent experimental results, and we extend this concept to trions and biexcitons. The effect of a local potential fluctuation, which we model by a circular potential well, on the binding energy of trions and biexcitons is investigated and found to significantly increase the binding of those excitonic complexes. |

Abstract |
Magnetic nanoparticles are critical building blocks for future technologies ranging from nanomedicine to spintronics. Many related applications require nanoparticles with tailored magnetic properties. However, despite significant efforts undertaken towards this goal, a broad and poorly understood dispersion of magnetic properties is reported, even within monodisperse samples of the canonical ferromagnetic 3d transition metals. We address this issue by investigating the magnetism of a large number of size- and shape-selected, individual nanoparticles of Fe, Co, and Ni using a unique set of complementary characterization techniques. At room temperature, only superparamagnetic behavior is observed in our experiments for all Ni nanoparticles within the investigated sizes, which range from 8 to 20 nm. However, Fe and Co nanoparticles can exist in two distinct magnetic states at any size in this range: (i) a superparamagnetic state, as expected from the bulk and surface anisotropies known for the respective materials and as observed for Ni, and (ii) a state with unexpected stable magnetization at room temperature. This striking state is assigned to significant modifications of the magnetic properties arising from metastable lattice defects in the core of the nanoparticles, as concluded by calculations and atomic structural characterization. Also related with the structural defects, we find that the magnetic state of Fe and Co nanoparticles can be tuned by thermal treatment enabling one to tailor their magnetic properties for applications. This paper demonstrates the importance of complementary single particle investigations for a better understanding of nanoparticle magnetism and for full exploration of their potential for applications. |

Abstract |
Magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)(2)] has a layered brucitelike structure in its bulk form and was recently isolated as a new member of two-dimensional monolayer materials. We investigated the electronic and optical properties of monolayer crystals of Mg(OH)(2) and WS2 and their possible heterobilayer structure by means of first-principles calculations. It was found that both monolayers of Mg(OH)(2) and WS2 are direct-gap semiconductors and these two monolayers form a typical van der Waals heterostructure with a weak interlayer interaction and a type-II band alignment with a staggered gap that spatially separates electrons and holes. We also showed that an out-of-plane electric field induces a transition from a staggered to a straddling-type heterojunction. Moreover, by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation on top of single-shot G(0)W(0) calculations, we show that the low-energy spectrum of the heterobilayer is dominated by the intralyer excitons of the WS2 monolayer. Because of the staggered interfacial gap and the field-tunable energy-band structure, the Mg(OH)(2)-WS2 heterobilayer can become an important candidate for various optoelectronic device applications in nanoscale. |

Abstract |
Recently, an extremely low lattice thermal conductivity value has been reported for the alkali-based telluride material BaIn2Te4. The value is comparable with low-thermal conductivity metal chalcogenides, and the glass limit is highly intriguing. Therefore, to shed light on this issue, we performed first-principles phonon thermal transport calculations. We predicted highly anisotropic lattice thermal conductivity along different directions via the solution of the linearized phonon Boltzmann transport equation. More importantly, we determined several different factors as the main sources of the predicted ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of this crystal, such as the strong interactions between low-frequency optical phonons and acoustic phonons, small phonon group velocities, and lattice anharmonicity indicated by large negative mode Gruneisen parameters. Along with thermal transport calculations, we also investigated the electronic transport properties by accurately calculating the scattering mechanisms, namely the acoustic deformation potential, ionized impurity, and polar optical scatterings. The inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for electronic structure is found to strongly affect the p-type Seebeck coefficients. Finally, we calculated the thermoelectric properties accurately, and the optimal ZT value of p-type doping, which originated from high Seebeck coefficients, was predicted to exceed unity after 700 K and have a direction averaged value of 1.63 (1.76 in the y-direction) at 1000 K around 2 x 1020 cm-3 hole concentration. For n-type doping, a ZT around 3.2 x 1019 cm-3 concentration was predicted to be a direction-averaged value of 1.40 (1.76 in the z-direction) at 1000 K, mostly originating from its high electron mobility. With the experimental evidence of high thermal stability, we showed that the BaIn2Te4 compound has the potential to be a promising mid- to high-temperature thermoelectric material for both p-type and n-type systems with appropriate doping. |

Abstract |
X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopic analyses showed a natural galena (PbS) crystal from Freiberg in Saxony (Germany) to be a single phase specimen [rock salt (NaCl) structure type, space group Fm3m, a = 5.932(1) angstrom] with stoichiometric composition and an enhanced dislocation density (8 approximate to 1011 cm-2). The latter parameter leads to an increase of the electrical resistivity in the high-temperature regime, as well as to the appearance of phonon resonance with a characteristic frequency coPR = 3.8(1) THz. Being in the same range (i.e., 3-5.5 THz) with the sulfur optical modes of highest group velocities, it results in a drastic reduction (by similar to 75%) of thermal conductivity (K) at lower temperatures (i.e., < 100 K), as well as in the appearance of a characteristic minimum in K at T approximate to 30 K. Furthermore, the studied galena is characterized by phonon-drag behavior and by temperature dependent switch of the charge carrier scattering mechanism regime (i.e., scattering on dislocations for T < 100 K, on acoustic phonons for 100 K < T < 170 K and on both acoustic and optical phonons for 170 K < T < 300 K). The combined theoretical calculation and optical spectroscopic study confirm this mineral to be a direct gap degenerate semiconductor. The possible origins of the second-order Raman spectrum are discussed. |

Abstract |
The interfacial atomic structure of a metallic LaNiO3/LaAlO3 superlattice grown on a LaSrAlO4 substrate was
investigated using a combination of atomically resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) at the Al K,
Al L2,3, Sr L2,3, Ni L2,3, La M4,5, and O K edges as well as hybridization mapping of selected features of the O
K-edge fine structure. We observe an additional La1−xSrxAl1−yNiyO3 layer at the substrate-superlattice interface,
possibly linked to diffusion of Al and Sr into the growing film or a surface reconstruction due to Sr segregation.
The roughness of the LaNiO3/LaAlO3 interfaces is found to be on average around one pseudocubic unit cell. The
O K-edge EELS spectra revealed reduced spectral weight of the prepeak derived from Ni-O hybridized states in
the LaNiO3 layers. We rule out oxygen nonstoichiometry of the LaNiO3 layers and discuss changes in the Ni-O
hybridization due to heterostructuring as possible origin. |

Abstract |
The quantum anomalous Hall effect was first observed experimentally by doping the Bi2Se3 materials family with chromium, where 5% doping induces an exchange field of around 0.1 eV. In ultrathin films, a topological phase transition from a normal insulator to a Chern insulator can be induced with an exchange field proportional to the hybridization gap. Subsequent transitions to states with higher Chern numbers require an exchange field larger than the (bulk) band gap, but are prohibited in practice by the detrimental effects of higher doping levels. Here, we show that threshold doping for these phase transitions in thin films is controllable by strain. As a consequence, higher Chern states can be reached with experimentally feasible doping, sufficiently dilute for the topological insulator to remain structurally stable. Such a facilitated realization of higher Chern insulators opens prospects for multichannel quantum computing, higher-capacity circuit interconnects, and energy-efficient electronic devices at elevated temperatures. |

Abstract |
Correlated, or extended, impurities play an important role in the transport properties of dirty metals. Here, we examine, in the framework of a tight-binding lattice, the transmission of a single electron through an array of correlated impurities. In particular we show that particles transmit through an impurity array in identical fashion, regardless of the direction of traversal. The demonstration of this fact is straightforward in the continuum limit, but requires a detailed proof for the discrete lattice. We also briefly demonstrate and discuss the time evolution of these scattering states, to delineate regions (in time and space) where the aforementioned symmetry is violated. |

Abstract |
Using Ginzburg-Landau formalism, we investigate the effect of confinement on the ground state of mesoscopic chiral p-wave superconductors in the absence of magnetic field. We reveal stable multichiral states with domain walls separating the regions with different chiralities, as well as monochiral states with spontaneous currents flowing along the edges. We show that multichiral states can exhibit identifying signatures in the spatial profile of the magnetic field if those are not screened by edge currents in the case of strong confinement. Such magnetic detection of domain walls in topological superconductors can serve as long-sought evidence of broken time-reversal symmetry. Furthermore, when applying electric current to mesoscopic p-wave samples, we found a hysteretic behavior in the current-voltage characteristic that distinguishes states with and without domain walls, thereby providing another useful hallmark for indirect confirmation of chiral p-wave superconductivity. |

Abstract |
We analyze the phenomenon of back hopping in spin-torque induced switching of the magnetization in perpendicularly magnetized tunnel junctions. The analysis is based on single-shot time-resolved conductance measurements of the pulse-induced back hopping. Studying several material variants reveals that the back hopping is a feature of the nominally fixed system of the tunnel junction. The back hopping is found to proceed by two sequential switching events that lead to a final state P' of conductance close to-but distinct from-that of the conventional parallel state. The P' state does not exist at remanence. It generally relaxes to the conventional antiparallel state if the current is removed. The P' state involves a switching of the sole spin-polarizing part of the fixed layers. The analysis of literature indicates that back hopping occurs only when the spin-polarizing layer is too weakly coupled to the rest of the fixed system, which justifies a posteriori the mitigation strategies of back hopping that were implemented empirically in spin-transfer-torque magnetic random access memories. |

Abstract |
We develop a theory of the upper critical field in a BCS superconductor with a nonlocal interaction between electrons. We have shown that the nonlocal interaction is characterized by the parameter k(F)rho(0), where k(F) is the Fermi momentum and rho(0) is the radius of electron-electron interaction. The presence of the external magnetic field leads to the generation of additional components of the order parameter with different angular momenta. This effect leads to the enhancement of the upper critical field above the orbital limiting field. In addition the upward curvature in the temperature dependence of H-c2 (T) in the clean limit is predicted. The impurity scattering suppresses the effect in the dirty limit. |

Abstract |
Excitonic superfluidity in double phosphorene monolayers is investigated using the BCS mean-field equations. Highly anisotropic superfluidity is predicted where we found that the maximum superfluid gap is in the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) regime along the armchair direction and in the BCS-BEC crossover regime along the zigzag direction. We estimate the highest Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature with maximum value up to similar to 90 K with onset carrier densities as high as 4 x 10(12) cm(-2). This transition temperature is significantly larger than what is found in double electron-hole few-layers graphene. Our results can guide experimental research toward the realization of anisotropic condensate states in electron-hole phosphorene monolayers. |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('gamma-Fe and related alloys are model systems of the coupling between structure and magnetism in solids. Since different electronic states (with different volumes and magnetic ordering states) are closely spaced in energy, small perturbations can alter which one is the actual ground state. Here, we demonstrate that the ferromagnetic state of gamma-Fe nanoparticles is associated with a tetragonal distortion of the fcc structure. Combining a wide range of complementary experimental techniques, including low-temperature Mossbauer spectroscopy, advanced transmission electron microscopy, and synchrotron radiation techniques, we unambiguously identify the tetragonally distorted ferromagnetic ground state, with lattice parameters a = 3.76(2) angstrom and c = 3.50(2) angstrom, and a magnetic moment of 2.45(5) mu(B) per Fe atom. Our findings indicate that the ferromagnetic order in nanostructured gamma-Fe is generally associated with a tetragonal distortion. This observation motivates a theoretical reassessment of the electronic structure of gamma-Fe taking tetragonal distortion into account.')); |

Abstract |
The structural and mechanical properties of N-doped graphene (NG) are investigated using reactive force field (ReaxFF) potentials in large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. We found that ripples, which are induced by the dopants, change the roughness of NG, which depends on the number of dopants and their local arrangement. For any doping ratio N/C, the NG becomes ferroelectric with a net dipole moment. The formation energy increases nonlinearly with N/C ratio, while the Young's modulus, tensile strength, and intrinsic strain decrease with the number of dopants. Our results for the structural deformation and the thermoelectricity of the NG sheet are in good agreement with recent experiments and ab initio calculations. |

Abstract |
Recent experimental measurements of light absorption in few-layer black phosphorus (BP) revealed a series of high and sharp peaks, interspersed by pairs of lower and broader features. Here, we propose a theoretical model for these excitonic states in few-layer BP within a continuum approach for the in-plane degrees of freedom and a tight-binding approximation that accounts for interlayer couplings. This yields excitonic transitions between different combinations of the subbands created by the coupled BP layers, which leads to a series of high and low oscillator strength excitonic states, consistent with the experimentally observed bright and dark exciton peaks, respectively. The main characteristics of such subband exciton states, as well as the possibility to control their energies and oscillator strengths via applied electric and magnetic fields, are discussed, towards a full understanding of the excitonic spectrum of few-layer BP and its tunability. |

Abstract |
The recently discovered structural transition in polymerized KC60 at about 50 K results in a doubling of the unit cell volume and accompanies the metal-insulator transition. Here we show that the ((a) over right arrow+(c) over right arrow,(b) over right arrow,(a) over right arrow-(c) over right arrow) superstructure results from small orientational charge density waves along the polymer chains and concomitant displacements of the surrounding K+ ions. The effect is specific for the space group Pmnn of KC60 and is absent in RbC60 and CsC60 (space group I2/m). The mechanism is relevant for the metal-insulator transition. |

Abstract |
Using the continuum model, we investigate the confined states and the corresponding wave functions of ABC-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) quantum dots (QDs). First, a general infinite-mass boundary condition is derived and applied to calculate the electron and hole energy levels of a circular QD in both the absence and presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Our analytical results for the energy spectra agree with those obtained by using the tight-binding model, where a TLG QD is surrounded by a staggered potential. Our findings show that (i) the energy spectrum exhibits intervalley symmetry E-K(e)(m) = -E-K'(h)(m) for the electron (e) and hole (h) states, where m is the angular momentum quantum number, (ii) the zero-energy Landau level (LL) is formed by the magnetic states with m <= 0 for both Dirac valleys, that is different from monolayer and bilayer graphene QD with infinite-mass potential in which only one of the cones contributes, and (iii) groups of three quantum Hall edge states in the tight-binding magnetic spectrum approach the zero LL, which results from the layer symmetry in TLG QDs. |

Abstract |
We investigate the energy spectrum, wave functions, and local density of states of an electrical dipole placed on a sheet of gapped graphene as function of the charge strength Z alpha for different sizes of the dipole and for different regularization parameters. The dipole is modeled as consisting of a positive and negative charge. Bound states are found within the gap region with some energy levels that anticross and others that cross as function of the impurity strength Z alpha. The anticrossings are more pronounced and move to higher charges Z alpha when the length of the dipole decreases. These energy levels turn into atomic collapse states when they enter the positive (or negative) energy continuum. A smooth transition from the single-impurity behavior to the dipole one is observed: The states diving towards the continuum in the single-impurity case are gradually replaced by a series of anticrossings that represent a continuation of the diving states in the single-impurity case. By studying the local density of states at the edge of the dipole we show how the series of anticrossings persist in the positive and negative continuum. |

Abstract |
Often real samples of graphene consist of islands of both monolayer and bilayer graphene. Bound states in such hybrid quantum dots are investigated for (i) a circular single-layer graphene quantum dot surrounded by an infinite bilayer graphene sheet and (ii) a circular bilayer graphene quantum dot surrounded by an infinite single-layer graphene. Using the continuum model and applying zigzag boundary conditions at the single-layer-bilayer graphene interface, we obtain analytical results for the energy levels and the corresponding wave spinors. Their dependence on perpendicular magnetic and electric fields are studied for both types of quantum dots. The energy levels exhibit characteristics of interface states, and we find anticrossings and closing of the energy gap in the presence of a bias potential. |

Abstract |
Using first-principle calculations, we systematically study strain tuning of the electronic properties of two- dimensional graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets with empirical formula CnNm. We found the following: (i) the ferromagnetic ordered state in the metal-free systems (n, m) = (4,3), (10,9), and (14,12) remains stable in the presence of strain of about 6%. However, the system (9,7) loses its ferromagnetic ordering when increasing strain. This is due to the presence of topological defects in the (9,7) system, which eliminates the asymmetry between spin up and spin down of the p(z) orbitals when strain is applied. (ii) By applying uniaxial strain, a band gap opens in systems which are initially gapless. (iii) In semiconducting systems which have an initial gap of about 1 eV, the band gap is closed with applying uniaxial strain. |

Abstract |
The alpha-T3 lattice model interpolates a honeycomb (graphene-like) lattice and a T3 (also known as dice) lattice via the parameter alpha. These lattices are made up of three atoms per unit cell. This gives rise to an additional dispersionless flat band touching the conduction and valence bands. Electrons in this model are analogous to Dirac fermions with an enlarged pseudospin, which provides unusual tunneling features like omnidirectional Klein tunneling, also called super-Klein tunneling (SKT). However, it is unknown how small deviations in the equivalence between the atomic sites, i.e., variations in the alpha parameter, and the number of tunnel barriers changes the transmission properties. Moreover, it is interesting to learn how tunneling occurs through regions where the energy spectrum changes from linear with a middle flat band to a hyperbolic dispersion. In this paper we investigate these properties, its dependence on the number of square barriers and the alpha parameter for either gapped and gapless cases. Furthermore, we compare these results to the case where electrons tunnel from a region with linear dispersion to a region with a bandgap. In the latter case, contrary to tunneling through a potential barrier, the SKT is no longer observed. Finally, we find specific cases where transmission is allowed due to a symmetry breaking of sublattice equivalence. |
