Abstract |
In a thin-film topological insulator (TI), the edge states on two surfaces may couple by quantum tunneling, opening a gap known as the hybridization gap. Controlling the hybridization gap and transport has a variety of potential uses in photodetection and energy-harvesting applications. In this paper, we report the effect of strain, and electric and magnetic field, on the hybridization gap and transport in a thin Bi2Se3 film, investigated within the tight-binding theoretical framework. We demonstrate that vertical compression decreases the hybridization gap, as does tensile in-plane strain. Applying an electric field breaks the inversion symmetry and leads to a Rashba-like spin splitting proportional to the electric field, hence closing and reopening the gap. The influence of a magnetic field on thin-film TI is also discussed, starting from the role of an out-of-plane magnetic field on quantum Hall states. We further demonstrate that the hybridization gap can be controlled by an in-plane magnetic field, and that by applying a sufficiently strong field a quantum phase transition from an insulator to a semimetal can be achieved. |

Abstract |
In the Comment, the authors state that the separation of the relative and center of mass variables in our work is not correct. Here we point out that there is a typographical error, i.e., qi instead of -e, in two of our equations which, when corrected, makes the Comment redundant. Within the ansatzes mentioned in our paper all our results are correct, in contrast to the claims of the Comment. |

Abstract |
In the pursuit of higher critical temperature of superconductivity, quasiflat electronic bands and Van Hove singularities in two dimensions (2D) have emerged as a potential approach to enhance Cooper pairing on the basis of mean-field expectations. However, these special electronic features suppress the superfluid stiffness and, hence, the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in 2D superconducting systems, leading to the emergence of a significant pseudogap regime due to superconducting fluctuations. In the strong-coupling regime, one finds that superfluid stiffness is inversely proportional to the superconducting gap, which is the predominant factor contributing to the strong suppression of superfluid stiffness. Here we reveal that the aforementioned limitation is avoided in a 2D superconducting electronic system with a quasiflat electronic band with a strong pairing strength coupled to a deep band with weak electronic pairing strength. Owing to the multiband effects, we demonstrate a screening-like mechanism that circumvents the suppression of the superfluid stiffness. We report the optimal conditions for achieving a large enhancement of the BKT transition temperature and a substantial shrinking of the pseudogap regime by tuning the intraband couplings and the pair-exchange coupling between the two band-condensates. |

Abstract |
In the quest for miniaturizing magnetic devices, the effects of boundaries and surfaces become increasingly important. Here we show how the recently predicted boundary-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) affects the magnetization of ferromagnetic films with a C-infinity v symmetry and a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. For an otherwise uniformly magnetized film, we find a surface twist when the magnetization in the bulk is canted by an in-plane external field. This twist at the surfaces caused by the boundary-induced DMI differs from the common canting caused by internal DMI observed at the edges of a chiral magnet. Furthermore, we find that the surface twist due to the boundary-induced DMI strongly affects the width of the domain wall at the surfaces. We also find that the skyrmion radius increases in the depth of the film, with the average size of the skyrmion increasing with boundary-induced DMI. This increase suggests that the boundary-induced DMI contributes to the stability of the skyrmion. |

Abstract |
In this work we compute the torque field present in a ferromagnet in contact with a metallic nanowire when a skyrmion is present. If the nanowire is narrow enough, then the current is carried by a single conduction band. In this regime the classical torque model breaks down and we show that a skyrmion driven by spin transfer torque moves in a different direction than predicted by the classical model. However, the amount of charge current required to move a skyrmion with a certain velocity in the single-band regime is similar to a classical model of torque where it is implicitly assumed current transport by many conduction bands. The single-band regime is more efficient creating spin current from charge current because of the perfect polarization of the single band but is less efficient creating torque from spin current. Nevertheless, it is possible to take profit of the single-band regime to move skyrmions even with no net charge or spin current flowing between the device contacts. We have also been able to recover the classical limit considering an ensemble of only a few electronic states. In this limit we have discovered that electron diffusion needs to be considered even in ballistic nanowires due the effect of the skyrmion structure on the electron current. |

Abstract |
Integration of graphene-based two-dimensional materials is essential for nanoelectronics applications. Using density-functional theory, we systematically investigate the electronic properties of vertically stacked graphene-graphitic carbon nitrides (GE/GCN). We also studied the covalently lateral stitched graphene-graphitic carbon nitrides (GE-GCN heterojunctions). The effects of perpendicular electric field on the electronic properties of six different heterostructures, i.e., (i) one layer of GE on top of a layer of CnNm with (n, m) = (3,1), (3,4), and (4,3) and (ii) three heterostructures CnNm/Cn'Nm', where (n, m) not equal (n', m') are elucidated. The most important calculated features are (i) the systems GE/C3N4, C3N/C3N4, GE-C3N, GE-C4N3, and C3N-C3N4 exhibit semiconducting characteristics having small band gaps of Delta(0)=20, 250, 100, 100, 80 meV, respectively while (ii) the systems GE/C4N3, C3N/C4N3, and C3N-C4N3 show ferromagnetic-metallic properties. In particular, we found that, in semiconducting heterostructures, the band gap increases nontrivially with increasing the absolute value of the applied perpendicular electric field. This work is useful for designing heterojunctions and heterostructures made of graphene and other two-dimensional materials such as those proposed in recent experiments [X. Liu and M. C. Hersam Sci. Adv. 5, 6444 (2019)]. |

Abstract |
Interface effect in complex oxide thin-film heterostructures lies at the vanguard of current research to design technologically relevant functionality and explore emergent physical phenomena. While most of the previous works focus on the perovskite/perovskite heterostructures, the study of perovskite/brownmillerite interfaces remains in its infancy. Here, we investigate spontaneously stabilized perovskite-ferromagnet (SrCoO3-delta)/brownmillerite-antiferromagnet (SrCoO2.5) bilayer with T-N > T-C and discover an unconventional interfacial magnetic exchange bias effect. From magnetometry investigations, it is rationalized that the observed effect stems from the interfacial ferromagnet/antiferromagnet coupling. The possibility for coupled ferromagnet/spin-glass interface engendering such effect is ruled out. Strikingly, a finite coercive field persists in the paramagnetic state of SrCoO3-delta,whereas the exchange bias field vanishes at T-C . We conjecture the observed effect to be due to the effective external quenched staggered field provided by the antiferromagnetic layer for the ferromagnetic spins at the interface. Our results not only unveil a paradigm to tailor the interfacial magnetic properties in oxide heterostructures without altering the cations at the interface, but also provide a purview to delve into the fundamental aspects of exchange bias in such unusual systems, paving a big step forward in thin-film magnetism. |

Abstract |
Interfaces of ferroic oxides can show complex magnetic textures which have strong impact on spintronics devices. This has been demonstrated recently for interfaces with insulating antiferromagnets such as BiFeO3. Here, noncollinear spin textures which can be switched in very low magnetic field are reported for conducting ferromagnetic bilayers of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3-SrRuO3 (LSMO-SRO). The magnetic order and switching are fundamentally different for bilayers coherently grown in reversed stacking sequence. The SRO top layer forms a persistent exchange spring which is antiferromagnetically coupled to LSMO and drives switching in low fields of a few milliteslas. Density functional theory reveals the crucial impact of the interface termination on the strength of Mn-Ru exchange coupling across the interface. The observation of an exchange spring agrees with ultrastrong coupling for the MnO2/SrO termination. Our results demonstrate low-field switching of noncollinear spin textures at an interface between conducting oxides, opening a pathway for manipulating and utilizing electron transport phenomena in controlled spin textures at oxide interfaces. |

Abstract |
It was recently shown that a chiral topological phase emerges from the coupling of two twisted monolayers of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta for 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 +delta for certain twist angles. In this work, we reveal the behavior of such twisted superconducting bilayers with d x 2 – y 2 pairing symmetry in the presence of an applied magnetic field. Specifically, we show that the emergent vortex matter can serve as a smoking gun for the detection of topological superconductivity in such bilayers. Moreover, we report two distinct skyrmionic states that characterize the chiral topological phase and provide a full account of their experimental signatures and their evolution with the twist angle. |

Large-scale atomistic simulations using the reactive empirical bond order force field approach is implemented to investigate thermal and mechanical properties of single-layer (SL) and multilayer (ML) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). The amplitude of the intrinsic ripples of SL MoS2 are found to be smaller than those exhibited by graphene (GE). Furthermore, because of the van der Waals interaction between layers, the out-of-plane thermal fluctuations of ML MoS2 decreases rapidly with increasing number of layers. This trend is confirmed by the buckling transition due to uniaxial stress which occurs for a significantly larger applied tension as compared to graphene. For SL MoS2, the melting temperature is estimated to be 3700 K which occurs through dimerization followed by the formation of small molecules consisting of two to five atoms. When different types of vacancies are inserted in the SL MoS2 it results in a decrease of both the melting temperature as well as the stiffness. |

Abstract |
Laser-induced manipulation of magnetism at the nanoscale is a rapidly growing research topic with potential for applications in spintronics. In this work, we address the role of the scattering cross section, thermal effects, and laser fluence on the magnetic, structural, and chemical stability of individual magnetic nanoparticles excited by single femtosecond laser pulses. We find that the energy transfer from the fs laser pulse to the nanoparticles is limited by the Rayleigh scattering cross section, which in combination with the light absorption of the supporting substrate and protective layers determines the increase in the nanoparticle temperature. We investigate individual Co nanoparticles (8 to 20 nm in size) as a prototypical model system, using x-ray photoemission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy upon excitation with single femtosecond laser pulses of varying intensity and polarization. In agreement with calculations, we find no deterministic or stochastic reversal of the magnetization in the nanoparticles up to intensities where ultrafast demagnetization or all-optical switching is typically reported in thin films. Instead, at higher fluences, the laser pulse excitation leads to photo-chemical reactions of the nanoparticles with the protective layer, which results in an irreversible change in the magnetic properties. Based on our findings, we discuss the conditions required for achieving laser-induced switching in isolated nanomagnets. |

Abstract |
Layered structures of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) belong to a new class of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor materials in which monolayers exhibit a direct band gap in their electronic spectrum. This band gap has recently been shown to vanish due to the presence of metallic edge modes when MoS2 monolayers are terminated by zigzag edges on both sides. Here, we demonstrate that a zigzag nanoribbon of MoS2, when exposed to an external exchange field in combination with a transverse electric field, has the potential to exhibit a peculiar half-metallic nature and thereby allows electrons of only one spin direction to move. The peculiarity of such spin-selective conductors originates from a spin switch near the gap-closing region, so the allowed spin orientation can be controlled by means of an external gate voltage. It is shown that the induced half-metallic phase is resistant to random fluctuations of the exchange field as well as the presence of edge vacancies. |

Abstract |
Magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)(2)] has a layered brucitelike structure in its bulk form and was recently isolated as a new member of two-dimensional monolayer materials. We investigated the electronic and optical properties of monolayer crystals of Mg(OH)(2) and WS2 and their possible heterobilayer structure by means of first-principles calculations. It was found that both monolayers of Mg(OH)(2) and WS2 are direct-gap semiconductors and these two monolayers form a typical van der Waals heterostructure with a weak interlayer interaction and a type-II band alignment with a staggered gap that spatially separates electrons and holes. We also showed that an out-of-plane electric field induces a transition from a staggered to a straddling-type heterojunction. Moreover, by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation on top of single-shot G(0)W(0) calculations, we show that the low-energy spectrum of the heterobilayer is dominated by the intralyer excitons of the WS2 monolayer. Because of the staggered interfacial gap and the field-tunable energy-band structure, the Mg(OH)(2)-WS2 heterobilayer can become an important candidate for various optoelectronic device applications in nanoscale. |

Abstract |
Magnetic nanoparticles are critical building blocks for future technologies ranging from nanomedicine to spintronics. Many related applications require nanoparticles with tailored magnetic properties. However, despite significant efforts undertaken towards this goal, a broad and poorly understood dispersion of magnetic properties is reported, even within monodisperse samples of the canonical ferromagnetic 3d transition metals. We address this issue by investigating the magnetism of a large number of size- and shape-selected, individual nanoparticles of Fe, Co, and Ni using a unique set of complementary characterization techniques. At room temperature, only superparamagnetic behavior is observed in our experiments for all Ni nanoparticles within the investigated sizes, which range from 8 to 20 nm. However, Fe and Co nanoparticles can exist in two distinct magnetic states at any size in this range: (i) a superparamagnetic state, as expected from the bulk and surface anisotropies known for the respective materials and as observed for Ni, and (ii) a state with unexpected stable magnetization at room temperature. This striking state is assigned to significant modifications of the magnetic properties arising from metastable lattice defects in the core of the nanoparticles, as concluded by calculations and atomic structural characterization. Also related with the structural defects, we find that the magnetic state of Fe and Co nanoparticles can be tuned by thermal treatment enabling one to tailor their magnetic properties for applications. This paper demonstrates the importance of complementary single particle investigations for a better understanding of nanoparticle magnetism and for full exploration of their potential for applications. |

Abstract |
Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin configurations in materials with chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), that are potentially useful for storing or processing information. To date, DMI has been found in few bulk materials, but can also be induced in atomically thin magnetic films in contact with surfaces with large spin-orbit interactions. Recent experiments have reported that isolated magnetic skyrmions can be stabilized even near room temperature in few-atom-thick magnetic layers sandwiched between materials that provide asymmetric spin-orbit coupling. Here we present the minimum-energy path analysis of three distinct mechanisms for the skyrmion collapse, based on ab initio input and the performed atomic-spin simulations. We focus on the stability of a skyrmion in three atomic layers of Co, either epitaxial on the Pt(111) surface or within a hybrid multilayer where DMI nontrivially varies per monolayer due to competition between different symmetry breaking from two sides of the Co film. In laterally finite systems, their constrained geometry causes poor thermal stability of the skyrmion toward collapse at the boundary, which we show to be resolved by designing the high-DMI structure within an extended film with lower or no DMI. |

Abstract |
Magnetization reversal is a well-studied problem with obvious applicability in computer hard drives. One can accomplish a magnetization reversal in at least one of two ways: application of a magnetic field or through a spin current. The latter is more amenable to a fully quantum-mechanical analysis. We formulate and solve the problem whereby a spin current interacts with a ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain, to eventually reverse the magnetization of the chain. Spin flips are accomplished through both elastic and inelastic scattering. A consequence of the inelastic-scattering channel, when it is no longer energetically possible, is the occurrence of a nonequilibrium bound state, which is an emergent property of the coupled local plus itinerant spin system. For certain definite parameter values the itinerant spin lingers near the local spins for some time, before eventually leaking out as an outwardly diffusing state. This phenomenon results in spin-flip dynamics and filtering properties for this type of system. |

Abstract |
Magnetoreflectivity measurements of the 1s and 2s exciton energies in a CdTe/Cd1-xMnxTe superlattice have been made in magnetic fields up to 45 T, showing the resonant polaron coupling of electrons to LO phonons. Strong reflectivity features are seen for both the 1s and 2s excitons, which show a strong field-dependent spin splitting due to the dilute magnetic barriers. At B-z=0, the 2s exciton feature is observed lying 18 meV above the Is state, and is shifted upward in energy by the magnetic fields. No resonant behavior occurs when the 2s state passes through the LO-phonon energy of 21 meV, but at higher fields of around 20 T, the resonances for both spin states (sigma(+/-)) of the 2s exciton broaden and show a strong anticrossing behavior. These experiments are shown to be in excellent agreement with a theoretical treatment which includes the resonant polaron coupling of the electrons alone. Both experiment and theory demonstrate an extremely strong resonant splitting of the 2s exciton states of approximately 11 meV, which is over 50% of the LO-phonon energy. The dominance of single-particle polaron coupling is attributed to the relative sizes of the polaron (35 Angstrom A) and the exciton (50 Angstrom A) radius. |

Abstract |
Massless Dirac fermions (MDFs) emerge as quasiparticles in various novel materials such as graphene and topological insulators, and they exhibit several intriguing properties, of which Veselago focusing is an outstanding example with a lot of possible applications. However, up to now Veselago focusing merely occurred in p-n junction devices based on the isotropic MDF, which lacks the tunability needed for realistic applications. Here, motivated by the emergence of novel Dirac materials, we investigate the propagation behaviors of anisotropic MDFs in such a p-n junction structure. By projecting the Hamiltonian of the anisotropic MDF to that of the isotropic MDF and deriving an exact analytical expression for the propagator, precise Veselago focusing is demonstrated without the need for mirror symmetry of the electron source and its focusing image. We show a tunable focusing position that can be used in a device to probe masked atom-scale defects. This study provides an innovative concept to realize Veselago focusing relevant for potential applications, and it paves the way for the design of novel electron optics devices by exploiting the anisotropic MDF. |

Abstract |
Mixed magnetism (the coexistence of strong and weak magnetism in one material) is regarded as the origin of the giant magnetocaloric effect (GMCE). A good example is (Mn,Fe)(2)(Si,P), which is established as one of the best magnetocaloric materials available. Tuning the material properties are essential for optimizing its performance, and a straightforward way to do that is by doping. In this article, an ab initio electronic structure method was used to calculate the structure and magnetic properties of 3d-transition-metal-doped (Mn,Fe)(2)(Si,P) materials for magnetocaloric applications (transition metals are Cr, Co, Mn, Ni, Cu). For a steady performance, the material should be mechanically stable. A detailed analysis of the elastic constants shows that the mechanical stability of the (Mn,Fe)(2)(Si,P) system increases significantly by doping with boron without affecting the magnetic properties. Insights of the influence of doping enable future studies to understand and predict bettermagnetocaloric materials. |

Abstract |
Often real samples of graphene consist of islands of both monolayer and bilayer graphene. Bound states in such hybrid quantum dots are investigated for (i) a circular single-layer graphene quantum dot surrounded by an infinite bilayer graphene sheet and (ii) a circular bilayer graphene quantum dot surrounded by an infinite single-layer graphene. Using the continuum model and applying zigzag boundary conditions at the single-layer-bilayer graphene interface, we obtain analytical results for the energy levels and the corresponding wave spinors. Their dependence on perpendicular magnetic and electric fields are studied for both types of quantum dots. The energy levels exhibit characteristics of interface states, and we find anticrossings and closing of the energy gap in the presence of a bias potential. |

Abstract |
Predicting the mechanical and thermal properties of quasi-two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalco-genides (TMDs) is an essential task necessary for their implementation in device applications. Although rigorous density-functional-theory-based calculations are able to predict mechanical and electronic properties, mostly they are limited to zero temperature. Classical molecular dynamics facilitates the investigation of temperature-dependent properties, but its performance highly depends on the potential used for defining interactions between the atoms. In this study, we calculated temperature-dependent phonon properties of single-layer TMDs, namely, MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2, by utilizing Stillinger-Weber-type potentials with optimized sets of parameters with respect to the first-principles results. The phonon lifetimes and contribution of each phonon mode in thermal conductivities in these monolayer crystals are systematically investigated by means of the spectralenergy-density method based on molecular dynamics simulations. The obtained results from this approach are in good agreement with previously available results from the Green-Kubo method. Moreover, detailed analysis of lattice thermal conductivity, including temperature-dependent mode decomposition through the entire Brillouin zone, shed more light on the thermal properties of these 2D crystals. The LA and TA acoustic branches contribute most to the lattice thermal conductivity, while ZA mode contribution is less because of the quadratic dispersion around the Brillouin zone center, particularly in MoSe2 due to the phonon anharmonicity, evident from the redshift, especially in optical modes, by increasing temperature. For all the considered 2D crystals, the phonon lifetime values are compelled by transition metal atoms, whereas the group velocity spectrum is dictated by chalcogen atoms. Overall, the lattice thermal conductivity is linearly proportional with inverse temperature. |

Abstract |
Quantum transport in a lattice is distinct from its counterpart in continuum media. Even a free wave packet travels differently in a lattice than in the continuum. We describe quantum scattering in a one-dimensional lattice and illustrate characteristics of quantum transport such as resonant transmission. In particular we examine the transport characteristics of a random trimer model. We demonstrate the real-time propagation of a wave packet and its phase shift due to impurity configurations. Spin-flip scattering is also taken into account in a spin-chain system. We show how individual spins in the chain evolve as a result of a spin-flip interaction between an incoming electron and a spin chain. |

Abstract |
Recent experimental measurements of light absorption in few-layer black phosphorus (BP) revealed a series of high and sharp peaks, interspersed by pairs of lower and broader features. Here, we propose a theoretical model for these excitonic states in few-layer BP within a continuum approach for the in-plane degrees of freedom and a tight-binding approximation that accounts for interlayer couplings. This yields excitonic transitions between different combinations of the subbands created by the coupled BP layers, which leads to a series of high and low oscillator strength excitonic states, consistent with the experimentally observed bright and dark exciton peaks, respectively. The main characteristics of such subband exciton states, as well as the possibility to control their energies and oscillator strengths via applied electric and magnetic fields, are discussed, towards a full understanding of the excitonic spectrum of few-layer BP and its tunability. |

Abstract |
Recent experiments show that an atomic step on the surface of atomically thin metallic films can strongly affect electronic transport. Here we reveal multiple and versatile effects that such a surface step can have on superconductivity in ultrathin films. By solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently in this regime, where quantum confinement dominates the emergent physics, we show that the electronic structure is profoundly modified on the two sides of the step, as is the spatial distribution of the superconducting order parameter and its dependence on temperature and electronic gating. Furthermore, the surface step changes nontrivially the transport properties both in the proximity-induced superconducting pair correlations and the Josephson effect, depending on the step height. These results offer a new route to tailor superconducting circuits and design atomically thin heterojunctions made of one same material. |

Abstract |
Recent measurements of the Josephson critical current through LSCO/LCO/LSCO thin films showed an unusually large proximity effect. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a tight-binding Hamiltonian we describe the proximity effect in weak links between a superconductor with critical temperature T-c and one with critical temperature T-c('), where T-c > T-c('). The weak link (N-') is therefore a superconductor above its own critical temperature and the superconducting regions are considered to have either s-wave or d-wave symmetry. We note that the proximity effect is enhanced due to the presence of superconducting correlations in the weak link. The dc Josephson current is calculated, and we obtain a nonzero value for temperatures greater than T-c(') for sizes of the weak links that can be almost an order of magnitude greater than the conventional coherence length. Considering pockets of superconductivity in the N-' layer, we show that this can lead to an even larger effect on the Josephson critical current by effectively shortening the weak link. |

Abstract |
Recently, an extremely low lattice thermal conductivity value has been reported for the alkali-based telluride material BaIn2Te4. The value is comparable with low-thermal conductivity metal chalcogenides, and the glass limit is highly intriguing. Therefore, to shed light on this issue, we performed first-principles phonon thermal transport calculations. We predicted highly anisotropic lattice thermal conductivity along different directions via the solution of the linearized phonon Boltzmann transport equation. More importantly, we determined several different factors as the main sources of the predicted ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of this crystal, such as the strong interactions between low-frequency optical phonons and acoustic phonons, small phonon group velocities, and lattice anharmonicity indicated by large negative mode Gruneisen parameters. Along with thermal transport calculations, we also investigated the electronic transport properties by accurately calculating the scattering mechanisms, namely the acoustic deformation potential, ionized impurity, and polar optical scatterings. The inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for electronic structure is found to strongly affect the p-type Seebeck coefficients. Finally, we calculated the thermoelectric properties accurately, and the optimal ZT value of p-type doping, which originated from high Seebeck coefficients, was predicted to exceed unity after 700 K and have a direction averaged value of 1.63 (1.76 in the y-direction) at 1000 K around 2 x 1020 cm-3 hole concentration. For n-type doping, a ZT around 3.2 x 1019 cm-3 concentration was predicted to be a direction-averaged value of 1.40 (1.76 in the z-direction) at 1000 K, mostly originating from its high electron mobility. With the experimental evidence of high thermal stability, we showed that the BaIn2Te4 compound has the potential to be a promising mid- to high-temperature thermoelectric material for both p-type and n-type systems with appropriate doping. |

Abstract |
Recently, several monolayer carbon allotropes have been proposed. The magnetic properties of these metal-free materials are investigated, and we explore a special type of all carbon system having an intrinsic magnetic ground state. The structure is composed of mixing pentagonal and hexagonal rings of carbon atoms, such that the unit cell consists of eleven atoms, where two C atoms each have an unpaired electron each with a local magnetic moment. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) state has a lower energy than the ferromagnetic (FM) one. However, a strain-driven transition to the FM ground state is possible. The application of strain not only lowers the energy of the FM state but it also induces an energy barrier of about 13 meV/(magnetic atom) to protect the FM state from excitation. Our findings based on first-principles calculations will motivate other works on similar metal-free magnetic monolayer materials and will have an impact on their possible applications in spintronic devices. |

Abstract |
Reducing the size of a superconductor below its characteristic length scales can either enhance or suppress its critical temperature (T-c). Depending on the bulk value of the electron-phonon coupling strength, electronic and phonon confinement effects will play different roles in the modification of T-c. Experimentally disentangling each contribution has remained a challenge. We have measured both the phonon density of states and T-c of Sn nanowires with diameters of 18, 35, and 100 nm in order to quantify the effects of phonon confinement on superconductivity. We observe a shift of the phonon frequency towards the low-energy region and an increase in the electron-phonon coupling constant that can account for the measured increase in T-c. |

Abstract |
Since the successful synthesis of bulk single crystals MoN2 and ReN2, which have a layered structure, transition-metal dinitrides have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Here, we focus on rare-earth metal (Rem) elements, and propose seven stable Rem dinitride monolayers with a 1T structure, namely, 1T-RemN2. We use first-principles calculations, and find that these monolayers have a ferromagnetic ground state with in-plane magnetization. Without spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the band structures are spin-polarized with Dirac points at the Fermi level. Remarkably, the 1T-LuN2 monolayer exhibits an isotropic magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy in the xy plane with in-plane magnetization, indicating easy tunability of the magnetization direction. When rotating the magnetization vector in the xy plane, we propose a model that accurately describes the variation of the SOC band gap and the two possible topological states (Weyl-like semimetal and Chern insulator states) whose properties are tunable. The Weyl-like semimetal state is a critical point between the two Chern insulator states with opposite sign of the Chern numbers (+/- 1). The nontrivial band gap (up to 60.3 meV) and the Weyl-like semimetal state are promising for applications in spintronic devices. |

Abstract |
Starting from a Hamiltonian with anharmonic coupling between in-plane acoustic displacements and outof-plane (flexural) modes, we derived coupled equations of motion for in-plane displacements correlations and flexural mode density fluctuations. Linear response theory and time-dependent thermal Green's functions techniques are applied in order to obtain different response functions. As external perturbations we allow for stresses and thermal heat sources. The displacement correlations are described by a Dyson equation where the flexural density distribution enters as an additional perturbation. The flexural density distribution satisfies a kinetic equation where the in-plane lattice displacements act as a perturbation. In the hydrodynamic limit this system of coupled equations is at the basis of a unified description of elastic and thermal phenomena, such as isothermal versus adiabatic sound motion and thermal conductivity versus second sound. The general theory is formulated in view of application to graphene, two-dimensional h-BN, and 2H-transition metal dichalcogenides and oxides. |
