Abstract |
Two-dimensional crystals with strong interactions between layers has attracted increasing attention in recent years in a variety of fields. In particular, the growth of a single layer of oxide materials (e.g., MgO, CaO, NiO, and MnO) over metallic substrates were found to display different physical properties than their bulk. In this study, we report on the physical properties of a single layer of metallic oxide materials and compare their properties with their bulk and other two-dimensional (2D) crystals. We found that the planar structure of metallic monoxides are unstable whereas the buckled structures are thermodynamically stable. Also, the 2D-MnO and NiO exhibit different magnetic (ferromagnetic) and optical properties than their bulk, whereas band-gap energy and linear stiffness are found to be decreasing from NiO to MgO. Our findings provide insight into oxide thin-film technology applications. |

Abstract |
The quantum anomalous Hall effect was first observed experimentally by doping the Bi2Se3 materials family with chromium, where 5% doping induces an exchange field of around 0.1 eV. In ultrathin films, a topological phase transition from a normal insulator to a Chern insulator can be induced with an exchange field proportional to the hybridization gap. Subsequent transitions to states with higher Chern numbers require an exchange field larger than the (bulk) band gap, but are prohibited in practice by the detrimental effects of higher doping levels. Here, we show that threshold doping for these phase transitions in thin films is controllable by strain. As a consequence, higher Chern states can be reached with experimentally feasible doping, sufficiently dilute for the topological insulator to remain structurally stable. Such a facilitated realization of higher Chern insulators opens prospects for multichannel quantum computing, higher-capacity circuit interconnects, and energy-efficient electronic devices at elevated temperatures. |

Abstract |
Flat bands in the energy spectrum have attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of their unique properties and promising applications. Special arrangement of impurities on monolayer graphene are proposed to generate multiflat bands in the electronic band structure. In addition to the single midgap states in the spectrum of graphene with low hydrogen density, we found closely spaced bands around the Fermi level with increasing impurity density, which are similar to discrete lines in the spectrum of quantum dots, as well as the unusual Landau-level energy spectrum of graphene in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The presence of flat bands crucially depends on whether or not there are odd or even electrons of H(F) atoms bound to graphene. Interestingly, we found that a fully hydrogenated (fluoridated) of a hexagon of graphene sheet with six hydrogen (fluorine) atoms sitting on top and bottom in consecutive order exhibits Dirac cones in the electronic band structure with a 20% smaller Fermi velocity as compared to the pristine graphene. Functionalizing graphene introduces various C-C bond lengths resulting in nonuniform strains. Such a nonuniform strain may induce a giant pseudomagnetic field in the system, resulting in quantum Hall effect. |

Abstract |
We theoretically investigate the binding energy and electron-hole (e-h) overlap of excitonic states confined at the interface between two-dimensional materials with type-II band alignment, i.e., with lowest conduction and highest valence band edges placed in different materials, arranged in a side-by-side planar heterostructure. We propose a variational procedure within the effective mass approximation to calculate the exciton ground state and apply our model to a monolayer MoS2/WS2 heterostructure. The role of nonabrupt interfaces between the materials is accounted for in our model by assuming a WxMo1-xS2 alloy around the interfacial region. Our results demonstrate that (i) interface-bound excitons are energetically favorable only for small interface thickness and/or for systems under high dielectric screening by the materials surrounding the monolayer, and that (ii) the interface exciton binding energy and its e-h overlap are controllable by the interface width and dielectric environment. |

Abstract |
The interplay between a magnetic field and the Coulomb potential from a charged vacancy on the electron states in graphene is investigated within the tight-binding model. The Coulomb potential removes locally Landau level degeneracy, while the vacancy introduces a satellite level next to the normal Landau level. These satellite levels are found throughout the positive-energy region, but in the negative-energy region, they turn into atomic collapse resonances. Crossings between Landau levels with different angular quantum number m are found. Unlike the point impurity system in which an anticrossing occurs between Landau levels of the same m, in this work anticrossing is found between the normal Landau level and the vacancy-induced level. The atomic collapse resonance hybridizes with the Landau levels. The charge at which the lowest Landau level m = -1, N = 1 crosses E = 0 increases with enhancing magnetic field. A Landau level scaling anomaly occurs when the charge is larger than the critical charge beta 0.6 and this critical charge is independent of the magnetic field. |

Abstract |
The McMillan-Ginzburg-Landau (MGL) model for charge density waves (CDW) is employed in a systematic phenomenological study of the different phases that have been probed in recent experiments involving transition metal dichalcogenides. We implemented an efficient imaginary time evolution method to solve the MGL equations, which enabled us to investigate the role of different coupling parameters on the CDW patterns and to perform calculations with different energy functionals that lead to several experimentally observed singularities in the CDW phase profiles. In particular, by choosing the appropriate energy functionals, we were able to obtain phases that go beyond the well-known periodic phase slips (discommensurations), exhibiting also topological defects (i.e., vortex-antivortex pairs), domain walls where the CDW order parameter is suppressed, and even CDW with broken rotational symmetry. Finally, we briefly discuss the effect of these different CDW phases on the profile and critical temperature of the competing superconducting state. |

Abstract |
Transport measurements are readily used to probe different phases in disordered topological insulators (TIs), where determining topological invariants explicitly is challenging. On that note, universal conductance fluctuations (UCF) theory asserts the conductance G for an ensemble has a Gaussian distribution, and that standard deviation 8G depends solely on the symmetries and dimensions of the system. Using a real-space tight -binding Hamiltonian on a system with Anderson disorder, we explore conductance fluctuations in a thin Bi2Se3 film and demonstrate the agreement of their behavior with UCF hypotheses. We further show that magnetic field applied out-of-plane breaks the time -reversal symmetry and transforms the system's Wigner-Dyson class from root symplectic to unitary, increasing 8G by 2. Finally, we reveal that while Bi2Se3 is a strong TI, weak TI and metallic phases can be stabilized in presence of strain and disorder, and detected by monitoring the conductance fluctuations. |

Abstract |
We provide the plasmon spectrum and related properties of the three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetals Na 3 Bi and Cd 3 As 2 based on the random -phase approximation. The necessary one -electron eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are obtained from an effective k <middle dot> p Hamiltonian. Below the energy at which the velocity v z along the k z axis vanishes, the density of states differs drastically from that of a 3D electron gas (3DEG) or graphene. The dispersion relation is anisotropic for wave vectors parallel ( q ) and perpendicular ( q z ) to the ( x , y ) plane and is markedly different than that of graphene or a 3DEG. The same holds for the energy -loss function. Both depend sensitively on the position of the Fermi energy E F relative to the region of the Berry curvature of the bands. For E F below the energy at which v z vanishes, the range of the relevant wave vectors q and q z shrinks, for q z by about one order of magnitude. |

Abstract |
We present a detailed theoretical investigation on the electronic transport properties of n-type monolayer (ML) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) at low temperature in the presence of proximity-induced interactions such as Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) and the exchange interaction. The electronic band structure is calculated by solving the Schr & ouml;dinger equation with a k <middle dot> p Hamiltonian, and the electric screening induced by electron-electron interaction is evaluated under a standard random phase approximation approach. In particular, the longitudinal and transverse or Hall mobilities are calculated by using a momentum-balance equation derived from a semiclassical Boltzmann equation, where the electron-impurity interaction is considered as the principal scattering center at low temperature. The obtained results show that the RSOC can induce the in-plane spin components for spin-split subbands in different valleys, while the exchange interaction can lift the energy degeneracy for electrons in different valleys. The opposite signs of Berry curvatures in the two valleys would introduce opposite directions of Lorentz force on valley electrons. As a result, the transverse currents from nondegenerate valleys can no longer be canceled out so that the transverse current or Hall mobility can be observed. Interestingly, we find that at a fixed effective Zeeman field, the lowest spin-split conduction subband in ML-TMDs can be tuned from one in the K'-valley to one in the K-valley by varying the Rashba parameter. The occupation of electrons in different valleys also varies with changing carrier density. Therefore, we can change the magnitude and direction of the Hall current by varying the Rashba parameter, effective Zeeman field, and carrier density by, e.g., the presence of a ferromagnetic substrate and/or applying a gate voltage. By taking the ML-MoS2 as an example, these effects are demonstrated and examined. The important and interesting theoretical findings can be beneficial to experimental observation of the valleytronic effect and to gaining an in-depth understanding of the ML-TMD systems in the presence of proximity-induced interactions. |

Abstract |
We theoretically investigate the magneto-optical (MO) properties of monolayer (ML) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in the presence of external electrical and quantizing magnetic fields and of the proximity-induced exchange interaction. The corresponding Landau Level (LL) structure is studied by solving the Schr & ouml;dinger equation and the spin polarization in ML-TMDs under the action of the magnetic field is evaluated. The impact of trigonal warping on LLs and MO absorption is examined. Furthermore, the longitudinal MO conductivity is calculated through the dynamical dielectric function under the standard random-phase approximation (RPA) with the Kubo formula. We take ML-MoS 2 as an example to examine the effects of proximity-induced exchange interaction, external electrical and magnetic fields on the MO conductivity induced via intra- and interband electronic transitions among the LLs. For intraband electronic transitions within the conduction or valence bands, we can observe two absorption peaks in terahertz (THz) frequency range. While the interband electronic transitions between conduction and valence LLs show a series of absorption peaks in the visible range. We find that the proximity-induced exchange interaction, the carrier density, the strengths of the external electrical and magnetic fields can effectively modulate the positions of the absorption peaks and the shapes of the MO absorption spectra. The results obtained from this study can benefit to an in-depth understanding of the MO properties of ML-TMDs which can be potentially applied for magneto-optic, spintronic, and valleytronic devices working in visible to THz frequency bandwidths. |

Abstract |
Dirac plasmons in a two-dimensional (2D) crystal are strongly affected by the dielectric properties of the environment, due to interaction of their electric field lines with the surrounding medium. Using graphene as a 2D reservoir of free carriers, one can engineer a material configuration that provides an anisotropic environment to the plasmons. In this work, we discuss the physical properties of Dirac plasmons in graphene surrounded by an arbitrary anisotropic dielectric and exemplify how h-BN-based heterostructures can be designed to bear the required anisotropic characteristics. We calculate how dielec-tric anisotropy impacts the spatial propagation of the plasmons and find that an anisotropy-induced plasmon mode emerges, together with a damping pathway, that stem from the out-of-plane off-diagonal elements in the dielectric tensor. Furthermore, we find that one can create hyperbolic plasmons by inher-iting the dielectric hyperbolicity of the designed material environment. Strong control over plasmon propagation patterns can be realized in a similar manner. Finally, we show that in this way one can also control the polarization of the light-matter excitations that constitute the plasmon. Taken together, our results promote the design of the dielectric environment as an effective path to tailor the plasmonic response of graphene on the nanoscopic level. |

Abstract |
A strong superconducting diode effect (SDE) is revealed in a thin superconducting film periodically nanostructured with magnetic dots. The SDE is caused by the current-activated dissipation mitigated by vortex-antivortex pairs (VAPs), which periodically nucleate under the dots, move and annihilate in the superconductor-eventually driving the system to the high-resistive state. Inversing the polarity of the applied current destimulates the nucleation of VAPs, the system remains superconducting up to far larger currents, leading to the pronounced diodic response. Our dissipative Ginzburg-Landau simulations detail the involved processes, and provide reliable geometric and parametric ranges for the experimental realiza-tion of such a nonvolatile superconducting diode, which operates in the absence of any applied magnetic field while being fluxonic by design. |

Abstract |
Molecular-dynamic simulations were performed in order to investigate the melting processes of isotropically confined binary systems. We considered two species of particles, which differ by their amount of electric charge. A Lindemann type of criterion was used to determine the angular melting temperature. We demonstrate that the magic-to-normal cluster transition can evolve in two distinct ways, that is, through a structural phase transition of the first order or via a smooth transition where an increase of the shells' width leads to a continuous decreasing mechanical stability of the system. Moreover, for large systems, we demonstrate that the internal cluster exerts a minor effect on the mechanical stability of the external shell. Furthermore, we show that highly symmetric configurations, such as those found for multiple ring structures, have large mechanical stability, i.e., high angular melting temperature. |

Abstract |
We study the structure and phonon spectrum of a two-dimensional bilayer system of classical charged dipoles oriented perpendicular to the plane of the layers for equal density in each layer. This system can be tuned through six different crystalline phases by changing the interlayer separation or the charge and/or dipole moment of the particle. The presence of the charge on the dipole particles is responsible for the nucleation of five staggered phases and a disordered phase which are not found in the magnetic dipole bilayer system. These extra phases are a consequence of the competition between the repulsive Coulomb and the attractive dipole interlayer interaction. We present the phase diagram and determine the order of the phase transitions. The phonon spectrum of the system was calculated within the harmonic approximation, and a nonmonotonic behavior of the phonon spectrum is found as a function of the effective strength of the interparticle interaction. The stability of the different phases is determined. |

Abstract |
The diffusion of charged particles interacting through a repulsive Yukawa potential, exp(-r/lambda)/r, confined by a parabolic potential in the y direction and subjected to a periodic substrate potential in the x direction is investigated. Langevin dynamic simulations are used to investigate the effect of the particle density, the amplitude of the periodic substrate, and the range of the interparticle interaction potential on the diffusive behavior of the particles. We found that in general the diffusion is suppressed with increasing the amplitude of the periodic potential, but for specific values of the strength of the substrate potential a remarkable increase of the diffusion is found with increasing the periodic potential amplitude. In addition, we found a strong dependence of the diffusion on the specific arrangement of the particles, e. g., single-chain versus multichain configuration. For certain particle configurations, a reentrant behavior of the diffusion is found as a function of the substrate strength due to structural transitions in the ordering of the particles. |

Abstract |
A two-dimensional (2D) binary colloidal system consisting of interacting dipoles is investigated using an analytical approach. Within the harmonic approximation we obtain the phonon spectrum of the system as a function of the composition, dipole-moment ratio, and mass ratio between the small and big particles. Through a systematic analysis of the phonon spectra we are able to determine the stability region of the different lattice structures of the colloidal alloys. The gaps in the phonon frequency spectrum, the optical frequencies in the long-wavelength limit, and the sound velocity are discussed as well. Using the modified Lindemann criterion and within the harmonic approximation we estimate the melting temperature of the sublattice generated by the big particles. |

Abstract |
Nonequilibrium self-organized patterns formed by particles interacting through competing range interaction are driven over a substrate by an external force. We show that, with increasing driving force, the preexisted static patterns evolve into dynamic patterns either via disordered phase or depinned patterns or via the formation of nonequilibrium stripes. Strikingly, the stripes are formed either in the direction of the driving force or in the transverse direction, depending on the pinning strength. The revealed dynamical patterns are summarized in a dynamical phase diagram. |

Abstract |
The ordered configurations of a monolayer of interacting magnetic dipoles confined in a circular parabolic potential are investigated as a function of the dipole moment of the particles. Despite the circular confinement, we find very asymmetric ordered structures like chains and Y-shaped configurations when a magnetic field is applied parallel to the plane of the particles. The normal-mode spectrum of the particles and its dependence on the magnetic field and the strength of the dipole moment of the particles are studied. The vibrational and rotational modes of the spectrum, which are associated with the stability of the system, are investigated in detail. The number of particles is varied and we found different ordering of the particles for different values of the dipole moment and the magnetic field. A ring structure with a large number of particles is observed for high values of the dipole moment of the particles. |

Abstract |
The ground state of colloidal magnetic particles in a modulated channel are investigated as a function of the tilt angle of an applied magnetic field. The particles are confined by a parabolic potential in the transversal direction while in the axial direction a periodic substrate potential is present. By using Monte Carlo simulations, we construct a phase diagram for the different crystal structures as a function of the magnetic field orientation, strength of the modulated potential, and the commensurability factor of the system. Interestingly, we found first-and second-order phase transitions between different crystal structures, which can be manipulated by the orientation of the external magnetic field. A reentrant behavior is found between two-and four-chain configurations, with continuous second-order transitions. Novel configurations are found consisting of frozen solitons of defects. By changing the orientation and/or strength of the magnetic field and/or the strength and periodicity of the substrate potential, the system transits through different phases. |

Abstract |
The thermal properties of a two-dimensional classical cluster of negatively charged particles bound by a punctual positive charge are presented. The melting phenomenon is analyzed and the features which characterize such a solid-liquid transition are highlighted. We found that the presence of metastable states strongly modifies the melting scenario, and that the melting temperature of the system is determined by the height of the saddle point energy separating the ground state and the metastable state. Due to the particular type of confinement potential considered in this paper, we also found that, at sufficiently large temperature, the cluster can become thermally ionized. |

Abstract |
Janus particles present an important class of building blocks for directional assembly. These are compartmentalized colloids with two different hemispheres. Here, we consider a two-dimensional model of Janus disks consisting of a hydrophobic semicircle and an electro-negatively charged one. Placed in a solution, the hydrophobic sides will attract each other while the charged sides will give rise to a repulsive force. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the morphology of these particles when confined in a channel-like environment using a one dimensional harmonic confinement potential. The interest to this system is first of all due to the fact that it could serve as a simple model for membrane formation. Indeed, the recently synthesized new class of artificial amphiphiles, known as Janus dendrimers, were shown to self-assemble in bilayer structures mimicking biological membranes. In turn, Janus particles that combine the amphiphilicity and colloidal rigidity serve as a good model for Janus dendrimers. A variety of ordered membrane-like morphologies are found consisting of single and multiple chain configurations with different orientations of the particles with respect to each other that we summarize in a phase diagram. |

Abstract |
Diffusive properties of interacting magnetic dipoles confined in a parabolic narrow channel and in the presence of a periodic modulated (corrugated) potential along the unconfined direction are studied using Brownian dynamics simulations. We compare our simulation results with the analytical result for the effective diffusion coefficient of a single particle by Festa and d'Agliano [Physica A 90, 229 (1978)] and show the importance of interparticle interaction on the diffusion process. We present results for the diffusion of magnetic dipoles as a function of linear density, strength of the periodic modulation and commensurability factor. |

Abstract |
We report on the dynamical properties of interacting colloids confined to one dimension and subjected to external periodic energy landscapes. We particularly focus on the influence of hydrodynamic interactions on the mean-square displacement. Using Brownian dynamics simulations, we study colloidal systems with two types of repulsive interparticle interactions, namely, Yukawa and superparamagnetic potentials. We find that in the homogeneous case, hydrodynamic interactions lead to an enhancement of the particle mobility and the mean-square displacement at long times scales as t(alpha), with alpha = 1/2 + epsilon and epsilon being a small correction. This correction, however, becomes much more important in the presence of an external field, which breaks the homogeneity of the particle distribution along the line and, therefore, promotes a richer dynamical scenario due to the hydrodynamical coupling among particles. We provide here the complete dynamical scenario in terms of the external potential parameters: amplitude and commensurability. |

Abstract |
The ordering of N equally charged particles (-e) moving in two dimensions and confined by a Coulomb potential, resulting from a displaced positive charge Ze is discussed. This is a classical model system for atoms. We obtain the configurations of charged particles which, depending on the value of N and Z, may result in ring structures, hexagonal-type configurations, and for N/Z approximate to 1 in an inner structure of particles which is separated by an outer ring of particles. For N/Z << 1, the Hamiltonian of the parabolic confinement case is recovered. For N/Z approximate to 1, the configurations are very different from those found in the case of a parabolic confinement potential. A hydrodynamic analysis is presented in order to highlight the correlations effects. |

Abstract |
We study the mixing of two different kinds of particles, having different charge and/or mass, interacting through a pure Coulomb potential, and confined in a parabolic trap. The structure of the cluster and its normal mode spectrum are analyzed as a function of the ratio of the charges (mass ratio) of the two types of particles. We show that particles are not always arranged in a shell structure. Mixing of the particles goes hand in hand with a large number of metastable states. The normal modes of the system are obtained, and we find that some of the special modes can be tuned by varying the ratio between the charges (masses) of the two species. The degree of mixing of the two type of particles is summarized in a phase diagram, and an order parameter that describes quantitatively the mixing between particles is defined. |

Abstract |
Diffusive properties of a monodisperse system of interacting particles confined to a quasi-one-dimensional channel are studied using molecular dynamics simulations. We calculate numerically the mean-squared displacement (MSD) and investigate the influence of the width of the channel (or the strength of the confinement potential) on diffusion in finite-size channels of different shapes (i.e., straight and circular). The transition from single-file diffusion to the two-dimensional diffusion regime is investigated. This transition [ regarding the calculation of the scaling exponent (alpha) of the MSD <Delta x(2)(t)> proportional to t(alpha)] as a function of the width of the channel is shown to change depending on the channel's confinement profile. In particular, the transition can be either smooth (i.e., for a parabolic confinement potential) or rather sharp (i.e., for a hard-wall potential), as distinct from infinite channels where this transition is abrupt. This result can be explained by qualitatively different distributions of the particle density for the different confinement potentials. |

Abstract |
The diffusion of a system of ferromagnetic dipoles confined in a quasi-one-dimensional parabolic trap is studied using Brownian dynamics simulations. We show that the dynamics of the system is tunable by an in-plane external homogeneous magnetic field. For a strong applied magnetic field, we find that the mobility of the system, the exponent of diffusion, and the crossover time among different diffusion regimes can be tuned by the orientation of the magnetic field. For weak magnetic fields, the exponent of diffusion in the subdiffusive regime is independent of the orientation of the external field. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.87.012307 |

Abstract |
Janus particles present an important class of building blocks for directional assembly. These are compartmentalized colloids with two different hemispheres. In this work we consider a three-dimensional model of Janus spheres that contain one hydrophobic and one charged hemisphere. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the morphology of these particles when confined in a channel-like environment. The interplay between the attractive and repulsive forces on each particle gives rise to a rich phase space where the relative orientation of each particle plays a dominant role in the formation of large-scale clusters. The interest in this system is primarily due to the fact that it could give a better understanding of the mechanisms of the formation of polar membranes. A variety of ordered membranelike morphologies is found consisting of single and multiple connected chain configurations. The helicity of these chains can be chosen by simply changing the salt concentration of the solution. Special attention is given to the formation of Bernal spirals. These helices are composed of regular tetrahedra and are known to exhibit nontrivial translational and rotational symmetry. |

Abstract |
We investigated the mixing and segregation of a system consisting of two different species of particles, having different charges, interacting through a pure Coulomb potential, and confined in a three-dimensional parabolic trap. The structure of the cluster and its normal mode spectrum are analyzed as a function of the relative charge and the relative number of different types of particles. We found that (a) the system can be in a mixed or segregated state depending on the relative charge ratio parameter and (b) the segregation process is mediated by a first or second order structural phase transition which strongly influences the magic cluster properties of the system. |
