Abstract |
It remains a challenge to identify the active sites of bismuth catalysts in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. Here we show through in situ characterization that the activation of bismuth oxyhalide electrocatalysts to metallic bismuth is guided by the halides. In situ X-ray diffraction results show that bromide promotes the selective exposure of planar bismuth surfaces, whereas chloride and iodide result in more disordered active sites. Furthermore, we find that bromide-activated bismuth catalysts outperform the chloride and iodide counterparts, achieving high current density (>100 mA cm(-2)) and formic acid selectivity (>90%), suggesting that planar bismuth surfaces are more active for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. In addition, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements reveal that the reconstruction proceeds rapidly in chloride-activated bismuth and gradually when bromide is present, facilitating the formation of ordered planar surfaces. These findings show the pivotal role of halogens on selective facet exposure in activated bismuth-based electrocatalysts during the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. |

Abstract |
Au nanoparticles (NPs) deposited on CeO2 are extensively used as thermal catalysts since the morphology of the NPs is expected to be stable at elevated temperatures. Although it is well known that the activity of Au NPs depends on their size and surface structure, their three-dimensional (3D) structure at the atomic scale has not been completely characterized as a function of temperature. In this paper, we overcome the limitations of conventional electron tomography by combining atom counting applied to aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy images and molecular dynamics relaxation. In this manner, we are able to perform an atomic resolution 3D investigation of supported Au NPs. Our results enable us to characterize the 3D equilibrium structure of single NPs as a function of temperature. Moreover, the dynamic 3D structural evolution of the NPs at high temperatures, including surface layer jumping and crystalline transformations, has been studied. |

Abstract |
Two-dimensional transition-metal dinitrides have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their rich magnetic properties. Here, we focus on rare-earth-metal elements and propose a monolayer of lanthanum dinitride with a 1T structural phase, 1T-LaN2. Using first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated the structure, stability, magnetism, and band structure of this material. It is a flexible and stable monolayer exhibiting a low lattice thermal conductivity, which is promising for future thermoelectric devices. The monolayer shows the ferromagnetic ground state with a spin-polarized band structure. Two linear spin-polarized bands cross at the Fermi level forming a Dirac point, which is formed by the p atomic orbitals of the N atoms, indicating that monolayer 1T-LaN2 is a Dirac spin-gapless semiconductor of p-state. When the spin-orbit coupling is taken into account, a large nontrivial indirect bandgap (86/354meV) can be opened at the Dirac point, and three chiral edge states are obtained, corresponding to a high Chern number of C=3, implying that monolayer 1T-LaN2 is a Chern insulator. Importantly, this kind of band structure is expected to occur in more monolayers of rare-earth-metal dinitride with a 1T structural phase. |

Abstract |
Using Floquet-Bloch theory, we propose to realize chiral topological phases in two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal FeX2 (X=Cl, Br, I) monolayers under irradiation of circularly polarized light. Such 2D FeX2 monolayers are predicted to be dynamically stable and exhibit both ferromagnetic and semiconducting properties. To capture the full topological physics of the magnetic semiconductor under periodic driving, we adopt ab initio Wannier-based tight-binding methods for the Floquet-Bloch bands, with the light-induced bandgap closings and openings being obtained as the light field strength increases. The calculations of slabs with open boundaries show the existence of chiral edge states. Interestingly, the topological transitions with branches of chiral edge states changing from zero to one and from one to two by tuning the light amplitude are obtained, showing that the topological Floquet phase of high Chern number can be induced in the present Floquet-Bloch systems. Abstract |
In this work, we employed first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the dynamical and thermal stability of graphene-like ZnX (X = N, P, As) nanosheets. We moreover analyzed the electronic, mechanical and optical properties of these novel two-dimensional (2D) systems. Acquired phonon dispersion relations reveal the absence of imaginary frequencies and thus confirming the dynamical stability of predicted monolayers. According to ab-initio molecular dynamics results however only ZnN and ZnP exhibit the required thermally stability. The elastic modulus of ZnN, ZnP and ZnAs are estimated to be 31, 21 and 17 N/m, respectively, and the corresponding tensile strengths values are 6.0, 4.9 and 4.0 N/m, respectively. Electronic band structure analysis confirms the metallic electronic character for the predicted monolayers. Results for the optical characteristics also indicate a reflectivity of 100% at extremely low energy levels, which is desirable for photonic and optoelectronic applications. According to our results, graphene-like ZnN and ZnP nanosheets can yield high capacities of 675 and 556 mAh/g for Li-ion storage, respectively. Acquired results confirm the stability and acceptable strength of ZnN and ZnP nanosheets and highlight their attractive application prospects in optical and energy storage systems. |

Abstract |
Following an extensive investigation of various monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2), research interest has expanded to include multilayer systems. In bilayer MX2, the stacking order strongly impacts the local band structure as it dictates the local confinement and symmetry. Determination of stacking order in multilayer MX(2)domains usually relies on prior knowledge of in-plane orientations of constituent layers. This is only feasible in case of growth resulting in well-defined triangular domains and not useful in-case of closed layers with hexagonal or irregularly shaped islands. Stacking order can be discerned in the reciprocal space by measuring changes in diffraction peak intensities. Advances in detector technology allow fast acquisition of high-quality four-dimensional datasets which can later be processed to extract useful information such as thickness, orientation, twist and strain. Here, we use 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with multislice diffraction simulations to unravel stacking order in epitaxially grown bilayer MoS2. Machine learning based data segmentation is employed to obtain useful statistics on grain orientation of monolayer and stacking in bilayer MoS2. |

Abstract |
The recent development in the field of two-dimensional magnetic materials urges reliable theoretical methodology for determination of magnetic properties. Among the available methods, ab initio four-state energy mapping based on density functional theory stands out as a powerful technique to calculate the magnetic exchange interaction in the Heisenberg spin model. Although the required formulas were explained in earlier works, the considered Hamiltonian in those studies always corresponded to the specific case that the off-diagonal part of J matrix is antisymmetric, which may be misleading in other cases. Therefore, using the most general form of the Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian, we here derive the generic formulas. With a proper choice of four different magnetic states, a single formula governs all elements of the exchange interaction matrix for any considered pair of spin sites. |

Abstract |
Within a tight-binding approach, we investigate the effect of twisting angle on the energy levels of circular bilayer graphene (BLG) quantum dots (QDs) in both the absence and presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The QDs are defined by an infinite-mass potential, so that the specific edge effects are not present. In the absence of magnetic field (or when the magnetic length is larger than the moire length), we show that the low-energy states in twisted BLG QDs are completely affected by the formation of moire patterns, with a strong localization at AA-stacked regions. When magnetic field increases, the energy gap of an untwisted BLG QD closes with the edge states, localized at the boundaries between the AA- and AB-stacked spots in a twisted BLG QD. Our observation of the spatial localization of the electrons in twisted BLG QDs can be experimentally probed by low-bias scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. |

Abstract |
The experimental parameter ranges needed to generate superfluidity in optical and drag experiments in GaAs double quantum wells are determined using a formalism that includes self-consistent screening of the Coulomb pairing interaction in the presence of the superfluid. The very different electron and hole masses in GaAs make this a particularly interesting system for superfluidity with exotic superfluid phases predicted in the BCS-Bose-Einstein condensation crossover regime. We find that the density and temperature ranges for superfluidity cover the range for which optical experiments have observed indications of superfluidity but that existing drag experiments lie outside the superfluid range. We also show that, for samples with low mobility with no macroscopically connected superfluidity, if the superfluidity survives in randomly distributed localized pockets, standard quantum capacitance measurements could detect these pockets. |

Abstract |
We report charge transfer up to a single electron per interfacial unit cell across nonpolar heterointerfaces from the Mott insulator LaTiO3 to the charge transfer insulator LaCoO3. In high-quality bi- and trilayer systems grown using pulsed laser deposition, soft x-ray absorption, dichroism, and scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy are used to probe the cobalt-3d electron count and provide an element-specific investigation of the magnetic properties. The experiments show the cobalt valence conversion is active within 3 unit cells of the heterointerface, and able to generate full conversion to 3d7 divalent Co, which displays a paramagnetic ground state. The number of LaTiO3/LaCoO3 interfaces, the thickness of an additional, electronically insulating “break” layer between the LaTiO3 and LaCoO3, and the LaCoO3 film thickness itself in trilayers provide a trio of control knobs for average charge of the cobalt ions in LaCoO3, illustrating the efficacy of O−2p band alignment as a guiding principle for property design in complex oxide heterointerfaces. |

Abstract |
STEM imaging is typically performed by raster scanning a focused electron probe over a sample. Here we investigate and compare three different scan patterns, making use of a programmable scan engine that allows to arbitrarily set the sequence of probe positions that are consecutively visited on the sample. We compare the typical raster scan with a so-called ‘snake’ pattern where the scan direction is reversed after each row and a novel Hilbert scan pattern that changes scan direction rapidly and provides an homogeneous treatment of both scan directions. We experimentally evaluate the imaging performance on a single crystal test sample by varying dwell time and evaluating behaviour with respect to sample drift. We demonstrate the ability of the Hilbert scan pattern to more faithfully represent the high frequency content of the image in the presence of sample drift. It is also shown that Hilbert scanning provides reduced bias when measuring lattice parameters from the obtained scanned images while maintaining similar precision in both scan directions which is especially important when e.g. performing strain analysis. Compared to raster scanning with flyback correction, both snake and Hilbert scanning benefit from dose reduction as only small probe movement steps occur. |

Abstract |
The emergence of micropollutants into our aquatic resources is regarded as an issue of increasing environmental concern. To protect the aquatic environment against further contamination with micropollutants, treatment with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is put forward as a promising technique. In this work, an innovative AOP based on electrical discharges in a continuous-flow pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor with falling water film over activated carbon textile is examined for its potential application in water treatment. The effect of various operational parameters including feed gas type, gas flow rate, water flow rate and power on removal and energy efficiency has been studied. To this end, a synthetic micropollutant mixture containing five pesticides (atrazine, alachlor, diuron, dichlorvos and pentachlorophenol), two pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine and 1,7-alpha-ethinylestradiol), and 1 plasticizer (bisphenol A) is used. While working under optimal conditions, energy consumption was situated in the range 2.42-4.25 kW h/m(3), which is about two times lower than the economically viable energy cost of AOPs (5 kW h/m(3)). Hence, the application of non-thermal plasma could be regarded as a promising alternative AOP for (industrial) wastewater remediation. |

Abstract |
Na2C is a novel two-dimensional material with Dirac Half-metal (DHM) characteristic, exhibiting a combination of single-spin massless Dirac fermions and half-semimetal. In this paper based on the first-principles calculations, we studied the mechanical, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of Na2C nanosheet. The elastic modulus of Na2C was measured to 18.5 N/m and isotropic, whereas it shows anisotropic tensile strengths of 2.85 and 2.04 N/m, for the loading along the zigzag and armchair directions, respectively. We found that Na2C, is a DHM with band gap of 0.7 eV in the up-spin channel and has 2 mu(B) magnetic moment per unit cell. In addition, we investigated the effects of number of atomic layers (thickness), electric field and strain on the possibility of further tuning of the electronic and magnetic properties of Na2C. Our calculations show that by increasing the number of layers from monolayer to bulk, a transition from DHM to ferromagnetic metal occurs with a high magnetic moments in the range of 16-30 mu(B). With applying an electric field on the Na2C bilayer (within the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic orders), energy band gap is slightly increased. In addition our results indicate that the electronic structure can be significantly modified by applying the mechanical straining. In this regard, under the biaxial strain (from 0% to – 8%) or large uniaxial strains (> – 6%), we observed the DHM to ferromagnetic-metal transition. Moreover, vacancy defects and atom substitutions can also effect the electronic and magnetic properties of Na2C nanosheet. Defective Na2C with single and double vacancies, was found to show the metallic response. With various atom substitutions this nanosheet exhibits; ferromagnetic-metal (Si and Be) with 5.2 and 3 mu(B); dilute-magnetic semiconductor (B and N) with 3 and 7 mu(B) magnetic moments, respectively. In the case of B or N atoms replacing the native C atom, the down-spin channel yields about 1 eV band gap. Interestingly, replacing the Na atoms in the native Na2C lattice with the Li can result in the formation of magnetic topological insulator phase with nontrivial band gap in the down-spin channel (25 meV and 0.15 eV) and up-spin channel (0.75 eV), in addition exhibit 8 mu(B) magnetic moment in the ground state. |

Abstract |
Superfluidity has recently been reported in double electron-hole bilayer graphene. The multiband nature of the bilayers is important because of the very small band gaps between conduction and valence bands. The long-range nature of the superfluid pairing interaction means that screening must be fully taken into account. We have carried out a systematic mean-field investigation that includes (i) contributions to screening from both intraband and interband excitations, (ii) the low-energy band structure of bilayer graphene with its small band gap and flattened Mexican-hat-like low-energy bands, (iii) the large density of states at the bottom of the bands, (iv) electron-hole pairing in the multibands, and (v) electron-hole pair transfers between the conduction and valence band condensates. We find that the superfluidity strongly modifies the intraband contributions to the screening, but that the interband contributions are unaffected. Unexpectedly, a net effect of the screening is to suppress Josephson-like pair transfers and to confine the superfluid pairing entirely to the conduction-band condensate even for very small band gaps, making the system behave similarly to a one-band superfluid. |

Abstract |
Starting from our previous work in which we obtained a system of coupled integrodifferential equations for acoustic sound waves and phonon density fluctuations in two-dimensional (2D) crystals, we derive here the corresponding hydrodynamic equations, and we study their consequences as a function of temperature and frequency. These phenomena encompass propagation and damping of acoustic sound waves, diffusive heat conduction, second sound, and Poiseuille heat flow, all of which are characterized by specific transport coefficients. We calculate these coefficients by means of correlation functions without using the concept of relaxation time. Numerical calculations are performed as well in order to show the temperature dependence of the transport coefficients and of the thermal conductivity. As a consequence of thermal tension, mechanical and thermal phenomena are coupled. We calculate the dynamic susceptibilities for displacement and temperature fluctuations and study their resonances. Due to the thermomechanical coupling, the thermal resonances such as the Landau-Placzek peak and the second-sound doublet appear in the displacement susceptibility, and conversely the acoustic sound wave doublet appears in the temperature susceptibility, Our analytical results not only apply to graphene, but they are also valid for arbitrary 2D crystals with hexagonal symmetry, such as 2D hexagonal boron nitride, 2H-transition-metal dichalcogenides, and oxides. |

Abstract |
Under high-enough values of perpendicularly-applied magnetic field and current, a type-II superconductor presents a finite resistance caused by the vortex motion driven by the Lorentz force. To recover the dissipation-free conduction state, strategies for minimizing vortex motion have been intensely studied in the last decades. However, the non-local vortex motion, arising in areas depleted of current, has been scarcely investigated despite its potential application for logic devices. Here, we propose a route to transfer vortices carried by non-local motion through long distances (up to 10 micrometers) in 50 nm-wide superconducting WC nanowires grown by Ga+ Focused Ion Beam Induced Deposition. A giant non-local electrical resistance of 36 Omega has been measured at 2 K in 3 mu m-long nanowires, which is 40 times higher than signals reported for wider wires of other superconductors. This giant effect is accounted for by the existence of a strong edge confinement potential that hampers transversal vortex displacements, allowing the long-range coherent displacement of a single vortex row along the superconducting channel. Experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations of vortex dynamics based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations. Our results pave the way for future developments on information technologies built upon single vortex manipulation in nano-superconductors. |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('Quantum electrodynamics predicts that heavy atoms (Z \u003E Z(c) approximate to 170) will undergo the process of atomic collapse where electrons sink into the positron continuum and a new family of so-called collapsing states emerges. The relativistic electrons in graphene exhibit the same physics but at a much lower critical charge (Z(c) approximate to 1) which has made it possible to confirm this phenomenon experimentally. However, there exist conflicting predictions on the effect of a magnetic field on atomic collapse. These theoretical predictions are based on the continuum Dirac-Weyl equation, which does not have an exact analytical solution for the interplay of a supercritical Coulomb potential and the magnetic field. Approximative solutions have been proposed, but because the two effects compete on similar energy scales, the theoretical treatment varies depending on the regime which is being considered. These limitations are overcome here by starting from a tight-binding approach and computing exact numerical results. By avoiding special limit cases, we found a smooth evolution between the different regimes. We predict that the atomic collapse effect persists even after the magnetic field is activated and that the critical charge remains unchanged. We show that the atomic collapse regime is characterized: (1) by a series of Landau level anticrossings and (2) by the absence of root B scaling of the Landau levels with regard to magnetic field strength.')); |

Abstract |
The Na-air battery, because of its high energy density and low charging overpotential, is a promising candidate for low-cost energy storage, hence leading to intensive research. However, to achieve such a battery, the role of the positive electrode material in the discharge process must be understood. This issue is herein addressed by exploring the electrochemical reduction of oxygen, as well as the chemical formation and precipitation of NaO2 using different electrodes. Whereas a minor influence of the electrode surface is demonstrated on the electrochemical formation of NaO2, a strong dependence of the subsequent chemical precipitation of NaO2 is identified. In the origin, this effect stems from the surface energy and O-2/O-2(-) affinity of the electrode. The strong interaction of Au with O-2/O-2(-) increases the nucleation rate and leads to an altered growth process when compared to C surfaces. Consequently, thin (3 mu m) flakes of NaO2 are found on Au, whereas on C large cubes (10 mu m) of NaO2 are formed. This has significant impact on the cell performance and leads to four times higher capacity when C electrodes with low surface energy and O-2/O-2(-) affinity are used. It is hoped that these findings will enable the design of new positive electrode materials with optimized surfaces. |

Abstract |
Plasma catalysis is gaining increasing interest, but the underlying mechanisms are far from understood. Different catalyst materials will have different chemical effects, but in addition, they might also have different dielectric constants, which will affect surface charging, and thus the plasma behavior. In this work, we demonstrate that surface charging plays an important role in the streamer propagation and discharge enhancement inside catalyst pores, and in the plasma distribution along the dielectric surface, and this role greatly depends on the dielectric constant of the material. For εr50, surface charging causes the plasma to spread along the dielectric surface and inside the pores, leading to deeper plasma streamer penetration, while for εr>50 or for metallic coatings, the discharge is more localized, due to very weak surface charging. In addition, at εr=50, the significant surface charge density near the pore entrance causes a large potential drop at the sharp pore edges, which induces a strong electric field and results in most pronounced plasma enhancement near the pore entrance. |

Abstract |
Optical and electronic properties of black phosphorus strongly depend on the number of layers and type of stacking. Using first-principles calculations within the framework of density functional theory, we investigate the electronic properties of bilayer black phosphorus with an interlayer twist angle of 90 degrees. These calculations are complemented with a simple (k) over right arrow . (p) over right arrow model which is able to capture most of the low energy features and is valid for arbitrary twist angles. The electronic spectrum of 90 degrees twisted bilayer black phosphorus is found to be x-y isotropic in contrast to the monolayer. However x-y anisotropy, and a partial return to monolayer-like behavior, particularly in the valence band, can be induced by an external out-of-plane electric field. Moreover, the preferred hole effective mass can be rotated by 90 degrees simply by changing the direction of the applied electric field. In particular, a +0.4 (-0.4) V angstrom(1) out-of-plane electric field results in a similar to 60% increase in the hole effective mass along the y (x) axis and enhances the m(y)*/m(x)* (m(x)*/m(y)*) ratio as much as by a factor of 40. Our DFT and (k) over right arrow . (p) over right arrow simulations clearly indicate that the twist angle in combination with an appropriate gate voltage is a novel way to tune the electronic and optical properties of bilayer phosphorus and it gives us a new degree of freedom to engineer the properties of black phosphorus based devices. |

Abstract |
A spin wave majority fork-like structure with feature size of 40 nm, is presented and investigated, through micromagnetic simulations. The structure consists of three merging out-of-plane magnetization spin wave buses and four magneto-electric cells serving as three inputs and an output. The information of the logic signals is encoded in the phase of the transmitted spin waves and subsequently stored as direction of magnetization of the magneto-electric cells upon detection. The minimum dimensions of the structure that produce an operational majority gate are identified. For all input combinations, the detection scheme employed manages to capture the majority phase result of the spin wave interference and ignore all reflection effects induced by the geometry of the structure. Abstract |
Thermal fluctuations play an increasingly important role in micromagnetic research relevant for various biomedical and other technological applications. Until now, it was deemed necessary to use a time stepping algorithm with a fixed time step in order to perform micromagnetic simulations at nonzero temperatures. However, Berkov and Gorn have shown in [D. Berkov and N. Gorn, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter,14, L281, 2002] that the drift term which generally appears when solving stochastic differential equations can only influence the length of the magnetization. This quantity is however fixed in the case of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. In this paper, we exploit this fact to straightforwardly extend existing high order solvers with an adaptive time stepping algorithm. We implemented the presented methods in the freely available GPU-accelerated micromagnetic software package MuMax3 and used it to extensively validate the presented methods. Next to the advantage of having control over the error tolerance, we report a twenty fold speedup without a loss of accuracy, when using the presented methods as compared to the hereto best practice of using Heun’s solver with a small fixed time step. |

Abstract |
Synchrotron radiation phase-contrast computed nanotomography (nano-CT) and two-and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) nanoscopic X-ray fluorescence (nano-XRF) were used to investigate the internal distribution of engineered-cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) in exposed individuals of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Whole-nematodes and selected tissues and organs were 3D-rendered: anatomical 3D renderings with 50 nm voxel size enabled the visualization of spherical nanoparticle aggregates. with size tip to 200 nm within intact C. elegans. A 20 X 37 nm(2) high-brilliance beam was employed to obtain XRF elemental distribution maps of entire nematodes or anatomical details such as embryos, which could be compared with the CT data, These maps showed Co NPs to be predominantly present within the intestine and the epithelium, and they were not colocalized with Zn granules found in the lysosonie-containing vesicles or Fe agglomerates in the intestine. Iterated XRF scanning of a specimen at 0 degrees and 90 degrees angles suggested that NP aggregates were translocated into tissues outside of the intestinal lumen. Virtual-slicing by means of 2D XRF tomography, combined with holotomography, indicated presumable presence of individual NP aggregates inside the uterus and within embryos. |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('Solid electrolytes are important materials with a wide range of technological applications. This work reports the crystal structure and electrical properties of a new solid electrolyte Na9Al(MoO4)(6). The monoclinic Na9Al(MoO4)(6) consists of isolated polyhedral, [Al(MoO4)(6)](9-) clusters composed of a central AlO6 octahedron sharing vertices with six MoO4 tetrahedra to form a three-dimensional framework. The AlO6 octahedron also shares edges with one NalO(6) octahedron and two Na2O(6) octahedra. Na3-Na5 atoms are located in the framework cavities. The structure is related to that of sodium ion conductor II-Na3Fe2(AsO4)(3). High-temperature conductivity measurements revealed that the conductivity (sigma) of Na9Al(MoO4)(6) at 803 K equals 1.63 X 10(-2) S cm(-1). The temperature behavior of the Na-23 and Al-27 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation rates of the Na-23 nuclei indicate the presence of fast Na+ ion diffusion in the studied compound. At T\u003C490 K, diffusion occurs by means of Na+ ion jumps exclusively through the sublattice of Na3-Na5 positions, whereas Na1 and Na2 become involved in the diffusion processes (through chemical exchange with the Na3-Na5 sublattice) only at higher temperatures.')); |

Abstract |
The realization of metal nanoparticles (NPs) with bimetallic character and distinct composition for specific catalytic applications is an intensively studied field. Due to the synergy between metals, most bimetallic particles exhibit unique properties that are hardly provided by the individual monometallic counterparts. However, as small-sized NPs possess high surface energy, agglomeration during catalytic reactions is favored. Sufficient stabilization can be achieved by confinement of NPs in porous support materials. In this sense, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in particular have gained a lot of attention during the last years; however, encapsulation of bimetallic species remains challenging. Herein, the exclusive embedding of preformed core-shell PdPt and RuPt NPs into chemically robust Zr-based MOFs is presented. Microstructural characterization manifests partial retention of the core-shell systems after successful encapsulation without harming the crystallinity of the microporous support. The resulting chemically robust NP@UiO-66 materials exhibit enhanced catalytic activity towards the liquid-phase hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, competitive with commercially used Pt on activated carbon, but with superior size-selectivity for sterically varied substrates. |

Abstract |
Stabilizing new host structures through potassium extraction from K-based polyanionic materials has been proven to be an interesting approach to develop new Li+/Na+ insertion materials. Pursuing the same trend, we here report the feasibility of preparing langbeinite “Fe-2(SO4)(3)” via electrochemical and chemical oxidation of K2Fe2(SO4)(3). Additionally, we succeeded in stabilizing a new K2Cu2(SO4)(3) phase via a solid-state synthesis approach. This novel compound crystallizes in a complex orthorhombic structure that differs from that of langbeinite as deduced from synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Electrochemically, the performance of this new phase is limited, which we explain in terms of sluggish diffusion kinetics. We further show that K2Cu2(SO4)(3) decomposes into K2Cu3O(SO4)(3) on heating, and we report for the first time the synthesis of fedotovite K2Cu3O(SO4)(3). Finally, the fundamental attractiveness of these S = 1/2 systems for physicists is examined by neutron magnetic diffraction, which reveals the absence of a long-range ordering of Cu2+ magnetic moments down to 1.5 K. |

Abstract |
We present a method for area selective deposition of 2D WS2 nanoribbons with tunable thickness on a dielectric substrate. The process is based on a complete conversion of a prepatterned, H-terminated Si layer to metallic W by WF6, followed by in situ sulfidation by H2S. The reaction process, performed at 450 degrees C, yields nanoribbons with lateral dimension down to 20 nm and with random basal plane orientation. The thickness of the nanoribbons is accurately controlled by the thickness of the pre-deposited Si layer. Upon rapid thermal annealing at 900 degrees C under inert gas, the WS2 basal planes align parallel to the substrate. |

Abstract |
We study the influence of confinement on the atomic collapse due to a Coulomb impurity placed at the center of a graphene quantum dot of radius R. We apply the zigzag or infinite-mass boundary condition and consider both a point-size and a finite-size impurity. As a function of the impurity strength Za, the energy spectra are discrete. In the case of the zigzag boundary condition, the degenerate (with respect to the angular momentum m) zero-energy levels are pulled down in energy as Z alpha increases, and they remain below epsilon = – Z alpha. Our results show that the energy levels exhibit a 1/R dependence in the subcritical regime [Z alpha < |km + 1/2|, k = 1 (-1) for the K (K') valley]. In the supercritical regime (Z alpha > |km + 1/2|) we find a qualitatively very different behavior where the levels decrease as a function of R in a nonmonotonic manner. While the valley symmetry is preserved in the presence of the impurity, we find that the impurity breaks electron-hole symmetry. We further study the energy spectrum of zigzag quantum dots in gapped graphene. Our results show that as the gap increases, the lowest electron states are pushed into the gap by the impurity. |

Abstract |
Plasma-surface interactions are in general highly complex due to the interplay of many concurrent processes. Molecular dynamics simulations provide insight in some of these processes, subject to the accessible time and length scales, and the availability of suitable force fields. In this introductory tutorial-style review, we aim to describe the current capabilities and limitations of molecular dynamics simulations in this field, restricting ourselves to low-temperature nonthermal plasmas. Attention is paid to the simulation of the various fundamental processes occurring, including sputtering, etching, implantation, and deposition, as well as to what extent the basic plasma components can be accounted for, including ground state and excited species, electric fields, ions, photons, and electrons. A number of examples is provided, giving an bird’s eye overview of the current state of the field. |

Abstract |
Recently proposed accurate correlation energies are used to determine the phase diagram of strongly coupled electron-hole graphene bilayers. The control parameters of the phase diagram are the charge carrier density and the insulating barrier thickness separating the bilayers. In addition to the electron-hole superfluid phase we find two new inhomogeneous ground states, a one dimensional charge density wave phase and a coupled electron-hole Wigner crystal. The elementary crystal structure of bilayer graphene plays no role in generating these new quantum phases, which are completely determined by the electrons and holes interacting through the Coulomb interaction. The experimental parameters for the new phases lie within attainable ranges and therefore coupled electron-hole bilayer graphene presents itself as an experimental system where novel emergent many-body phases can be realized. |
