Abstract |
The double phosphate Ca9In(PO4)(7) was obtained by solid-state reaction and was studied by room and high-temperature Xray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, second-harmonic generation (SHG) technique, differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric and conductivity measurements. The beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) room-temperature phase is related to the mineral whitlockite and is similar to beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2). It has space group R (3) over barc, with unit cell parameters: a = 10.4008(1) Angstrom, c = 37.272(1) Angstrom, Z = 6. The structure was refined by the Rietveld method (R-wp = 4.69, R-I = 1.81). A reversible first-order beta <----> beta' phase transition of the ferroelectric type with T-c = 902 K is revealed by SHG, differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric measurements. The centrosymmetric beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) (973 K) has space group R (3) over barc, a = 10.4611(2) Angstrom, c = 37.874 (1) Angstrom (R-wp = 4.27, R-I = 4.11). Compared to the low-temperature beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) structure, beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) can be described as an orientational disordering of the P1O(4) tetrahedra together with a calcium disordering on the M3 site. Abstract |
Nanocorrugation of 2D crystals is an important phenomenon since it affects their electronic and mechanical properties. The corrugation may have various sources; one of them is flexural phonons that, in particular, are responsible for the thermal conductivity of graphene. A study of corrugation of just the suspended graphene can reveal much of valuable information on the physics of this complicated phenomenon. At the same time, the suspended crystal nanorelief can hardly be measured directly because of high flexibility of the 2D crystal. Moreover, the relief portion related to rapid out-of-plane oscillations (flexural phonons) is also inaccessible by such measurements. Here we present a technique for measuring the Fourier components of the height-height correlation function H(q) of suspended graphene which includes the effect of flexural phonons. The technique is based on the analysis of electron diffraction patterns. The H(q) is measured in the range of wavevectors q approximately 0.4-4.5nm(-1). At the upper limit of this range H(q) does follow the T/kappaq(4) law. So, we measured the value of suspended graphene bending rigidity kappa=1.2+/-0.4eV at ambient temperature T approximately 300K. At intermediate wave vectors, H(q) follows a slightly weaker exponent than theoretically predicted q(-3.15) but is closer to the results of the molecular dynamics simulation. At low wave vectors, the dependence becomes even weaker, which may be a sign of influence of charge carriers on the dynamics of undulations longer than 10nm. The technique presented can be used for studying physics of flexural phonons in other 2D materials. |

Abstract |
In order to increase the production rate during selective laser melting (SLM), a high power laser with a large beam diameter is used to build fully dense Hastelloy X parts. Compared to SLM with a low power and small diameter beam, the productivity was increased from 6 mm3/s to 16 mm3/s, i.e. 2.6 times faster. Besides the productivity benefit, the influence of the use of a high power laser on the rapid solidification microstructure and concomitant material properties is highlighted. The current paper compares the microstructure and tensile properties of Hastelloy X built with low and high power lasers. The use of a high power laser results in wider and shallower melt pools inducing an enhanced morphological and crystallographic texture along the building direction (BD). In addition, the increased heat input results in coarser sub-grains or high density dislocation walls for samples processed with a high power laser. Additionally, the influence of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) as a post-processing technique was evaluated. After HIP, the tensile fracture strain increased as compared to the strain in the as-built state and helped in obtaining competitive mechanical properties as compared to conventionally processed Hastelloy X parts. |

Abstract |
It is very challenging to measure the chemical composition of hetero nanostructures in a reliable and quantitative manner. Here, we propose a novel and straightforward approach that can be used to quantify energy dispersive X-ray spectra acquired in a transmission electron microscope. Our method is based on a combination of electron tomography and the so-called ζ-factor technique. We will demonstrate the reliability of our approach as well as its applicability by investigating Au-Ag and Au-Pt hetero nanostructures. Given its simplicity, we expect that the method could become a new standard in the field of chemical characterization using electron microscopy. |

Abstract |
Nanometer sized (Ti,Mo,Cr)C (MX-type) precipitates that grew in a 24% cold worked Ti-stabilized austenitic stainless steel (grade DIN 1.4970, member of the 15-15Ti austenitic stainless steels) after heat treatment were fully characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), probe corrected high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-HAADF STEM), and atom probe tomography (APT). The precipitates shared the cube-on-cube orientation with the matrix and were facetted on {111} planes, yielding octahedral and elongated octahedral shapes. The misfit dislocations were believed to have Burgers vectors a/6<112> which was verified by geometrical phase analysis (GPA) strain mapping of a matrix-precipitate interface. The dislocations were spaced five to seven atomic
planes apart, on average slightly wider than expected for the lattice parameters of steel and TiC. Quantitative atom probe tomography analysis of the precipitates showed that precipitates were significantly enriched in Mo, Cr and V, and that they were hypostoichiometric with respect to C. These findings were consistent with a reduced lattice parameter. The precipitates were found primarily on Shockley
partial dislocations originating from the original perfect dislocation network. These novel findings could contribute to the understanding of how TiC nanoprecipitates interact with point defects and matrix dislocations. This is essential for the application of these Ti-stabilized steels in high temperature environments or fast spectrum nuclear fission reactors. |

Abstract |
The demand of a full solid-state cooling technology based on magnetocaloric and thermoelectric effects has led to a growing interest in screening candidate materials with high-efficiency cooling performance, which also stimulates the exploration of magnetocaloric/thermoelectric hybrid cooling materials. A series of Gd/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 composites was fabricated in order to develop the hybrid cooling technology. The chemical composition, phase structure and diffusion kinetics across the reaction layers in Gd/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 composites were analyzed at different reaction temperatures. Micro-area elemental analysis indicates that the formation of interfacial phases is dominated by the diffusion of Gd and Te while the diffusion of Bi and Sb is impeded. The interfacial phases, including GdTe2, GdTe3, and intermediate phases GdTex, are identified by atomic-resolution electron microscopy. The concentration modulation of Gd and Te is adapted by altering the stacking of the Te square-net sheets and the corrugated GdTe sheets. Boltzmann-Marano analysis was applied to reveal the diffusion kinetics of Gd and Te in the interfacial layers. The diffusion coefficients of Te in GdTe2 and GdTe3 are much higher than that of Gd while in GdTe the situation is reversed. This study provides a clear picture to understand the interfacial phase structures down to an atomic scale as well as the interfacial diffusion kinetics in Gd/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 hybrid cooling materials. |

Abstract |
First results on the imaging of intact metalorganic framework (MOF) pores in MOF-5 nanocrystals by aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM) under liquid nitrogen conditions are presented. The applied technique is certainly transferable to other MOF systems, permitting detailed studies of MOF interfaces, MOFnanoparticle interaction and MOF thin films. |

Abstract |
Lithium-rich oxides are a promising class of positive electrode materials for next generation lithium-ion batteries, and oxygen plays a prominent role during electrochemical cycling either by forming peroxo-like species and/or by irreversibly forming oxygen gas during first charge. Here, we present Li-Fe-Te-O materials which show a tremendous amount of oxygen gas release. This oxygen release accounts for nearly all the capacity during the first charge and results in vacancies as seen by transmission electron microscopy. There is no oxidation of either metal during charge but significant changes in their environments. These changes are particularly extreme for tellurium. XRD and neutron powder diffraction both show limited Changes during cycling and no appreciable change in lattice parameters. A density functional theory study of this material is performed and demonstrates that the holes created on some of the oxygen atoms upon oxidation are partially stabilized through the formation of shorter O-O bonds, i.e. (O-2)(n-) species which on further delithiation show a spontaneous O-2 de-coordination from the cationic network and migration to the now empty lithium layer. The rate limiting step during charge is undoubtedly the diffusion of oxygen either out along the lithium layer or via columns of oxygen atoms. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract |
The design of high-strength martensitic stainless steels requires an accurate control over the stability of undesired phases, like carbides and ferrite, which can hamper strength and ductility. Here, the ferrite to austenite transformation in Fe-11Cr-0.06C has been studied with a combined experimental-modelling approach. Experimental observations of the austenization process indicate that austenite growth proceeds in multiple steps, each one characterized by a different transformation rate. DICTRA based modelling reveals that the dissolution of the M23C6 Cr-rich carbides leads to Cr partitioning between austenite and parent phases, which controls the rate of transformation through (i) a soft-impingement effect and (ii) consequent stabilization of the ferrite, which remains untransformed inside chromium-enriched-zones even after prolonged austenization stage. Slow heating rate and smaller initial particle sizes allow the design of ferrite-free microstructure. |

Abstract |
Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is an ideal tool to obtain chemical information from nanoscale volumes. Quantification of the experimental spectra however has prevented for a long time access to the available information in a reliable and reproducible way. We present recent advances in model-based quantification of EELS spectra and show that we obtain the best possible precision for a given dataset, as well as remarkably good accuracies when applied to three different materials. The results are shown to be far superior over conventional quantification techniques and could hold a promise for standardless quantification of EELS spectra. |

Abstract |
BSA-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles with different hydrodynamic diameters (36 +/- 4 and 85 +/- 10 nm) were synthesized, zeta potential and T2 relaxivity were determined, and their morphology was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Studies on rats with experimental glioma C6 showed that smaller nanoparticles more effectively accumulated in the tumor and circulated longer in brain vessels. Optimization of the hydrodynamic diameter improves the efficiency of MRT contrast agent. |

Abstract |
Numerical simulations of flow and pollutant dispersion in urban environments have the potential to support design and policy decisions that could reduce the population's exposure to air pollution. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations are a common modeling technique for urban flow and dispersion, but several sources of uncertainty in the simulations can affect the accuracy of the results. The present study proposes a method to quantify the uncertainty related to variability in the inflow boundary conditions. The method is applied to predict flow and pollutant dispersion in downtown Oklahoma City and the results are compared to field measurements available from the Joint Urban 2003 measurement campaign. Three uncertain parameters that define the inflow profiles for velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation are defined: the velocity magnitude and direction, and the terrain roughness length. The uncertain parameter space is defined based on the available measurement data, and a non-intrusive propagation approach that employs 729 simulations is used to quantify the uncertainty in the simulation output. A variance based sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the most influential uncertain parameters, and it is shown that the predicted tracer concentrations are influenced by all three uncertain variables. Subsequently, we specify different probability distributions for the uncertain inflow variables based on the available measurement data and calculate the corresponding means and 95% confidence intervals for comparison with the field measurements at 35 locations in downtown Oklahoma City. Abstract |
The microstructural characteristics of two polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) films with different electrical properties produced by low-pressure chemical vapour deposition on top of high resistivity silicon substrates were investigated by advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM), including high resolution aberration corrected TEM and automated crystallographic orientation mapping in TEM. The results reveal that the nature of the poly-Si film/Si substrate interface is the main factor controlling the electrical resistivity of the poly-Si films. The high resistivity and high electrical linearity of poly-Si films are strongly promoted by the Sigma 3 twin type character of the poly-Si/Si substrate interface, leading to the generation of a huge amount of extended defects including stacking faults, Sigma 3 twin boundaries as well as Sigma 9 grain boundaries at this interface. Furthermore, a high density of interfacial dislocations has been observed at numerous common and more exotic grain boundaries deviating from their standard crystallographic planes. In contrast, poly-Si film/Si substrate interfaces with random character do not favour the formation of such complex patterns of defects, leading to poor electrical resistivity of the poly-Si film. This finding opens windows for the development of high resistivity silicon substrates for Radio Frequency (RF) integrated circuits (ICs) applications. |

Abstract |
Supported carbon nanosheets and carbon nanotubes served as sacrificial templates for preparing spacious TiO2 photocatalytic thin films. Amorphous TiO2 was deposited conformally on the carbonaceous template material by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Upon calcination at 550 °C, the carbon template was oxidatively removed and the as-deposited continuous amorphous TiO2 layers transformed into interlinked anatase nanoparticles with an overall morphology commensurate to the original template structure. The effect of type of template, number of ALD cycles and gas residence time of pollutant on the photocatalytic activity, as well as the stability of the photocatalytic performance of these thin films was investigated. The TiO2 films exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity toward photocatalytic degradation of acetaldehyde in air as a model reaction for photocatalytic indoor air pollution abatement. Optimized films outperformed a reference film of commercial PC500. |

Abstract |
Annular dark-field (ADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has become widely used in quantitative studies based on the opportunity to directly compare experimental and simulated images. This comparison merely requires the experimental data to be normalised and expressed in units of fractional beam-current. However, inhomogeneities in the response of electron detectors can complicate this normalisation. The quantification procedure becomes both experiment and instrument specific, requiring new simulations for the particular response of each instrument's detector, and for every camera-length used. This not only impedes the comparison between different instruments and research groups, but can also be computationally very time consuming. Furthermore, not all image simulation methods allow for the inclusion of an inhomogeneous detector response. In this work, we propose an alternative method for normalising experimental data in order to compare these with simulations that consider a homogeneous detector response. To achieve this, we determine the electron flux distribution reaching the detector by means of a camera-length series or a so-called atomic column cross-section averaged convergent beam electron diffraction (XSACBED) pattern. The result is then used to determine the relative weighting of the detector response. Here we show that the results obtained by this new electron flux weighted (EFW) method are comparable to the currently used method, while considerably simplifying the needed simulation libraries. The proposed method also allows one to obtain a metric that describes the quality of the detector response in comparison with the ideal detector response. |

Abstract |
Photo-activated processes have been widely recognized as cost-effective and environmentally friendly routes for both renewable energy generation and purification/cleaning technologies. We report herein on a plasma- assisted approach for the synthesis of Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 nanosystems functionalized with Au nanoparticles. Fe 2 O 3 nanostructures were grown by plasma enhanced-chemical vapor deposition, followed by the sequential sputtering of titanium and gold under controlled conditions, and final annealing in air. The target nanosystems were subjected to a thorough multi-technique characterization, in order to elucidate the interrelations between their chemico-physical properties and the processing conditions. Finally, the functional performances were preliminarily investigated in both sunlight-assisted H 2 O splitting and photocatalytic activity tests in view of self- cleaning applications. The obtained results highlight the possibility of tailoring the system behaviour and candidate the present Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 -Au nanosystems as possible multi-functional low-cost platforms for light-activated processes. |

Abstract |
We report the controlled preparation of water processable nanoparticles (NPs) employing the push-pull polymer PCDTBT and the fullerene acceptor PC71BM in order to enable solar cell processing using eco-friendly solvent (i.e. water). The presented method provides the possibility to separate the formation of the active layer blend and the deposition of the active layer into two different processes. For the first time, the benefits of aqueous processability for the high-potential class of push-pull polymers, generally requiring high boiling solvents, are made accessible. With our method we demonstrate excellent control over the blend stoichiometry and efficient mixing. Furthermore, we provide visualization of the nano morphology of the different NPs to obtain structural information down to similar to 2 nm resolution using advanced analytical electron microscopy. The imaging directly reveals very small compositional demixing in the PCDTBT:PC71BM blend NPs, in the size range of about <5 nm, indicating fine mixing at the molecular level. The suitability of the proposed methodology and materials towards the aspects of eco-friendly processing of organic solar cells is demonstrated through a processing of lab scale NPs solar cell prototypes reaching a power conversion efficiency of 1.9%. Abstract |
Gold nanoparticles are studied extensively due to their unique optical and catalytical properties. Their exact shape determines the properties and thereby the possible applications. Electron tomography is therefore often used to examine the three-dimensional (3D) shape of nanoparticles. However, since the acquisition of the experimental tilt series and the 3D reconstructions are very time consuming, it is difficult to obtain statistical results concerning the 3D shape of nanoparticles. Here, we propose a new approach for electron tomography that is based on artificial neural networks. The use of a new reconstruction approach enables us to reduce the number of projection images with a factor of 5 or more. The decrease in acquisition time of the tilt series and use of an efficient reconstruction algorithm allows us to examine a large amount of nanoparticles in order to retrieve statistical results concerning the 3D shape. |
