Abstract: High T-c superconductor-ferromagnetic heterostructures constitute an appealing playground to study the interplay between flux vortices and magnetic moments. Here, the capability of a solution-derived route to grow hybrid YBa2Cu3O7-ferromagnetic nanocomposite epitaxial thin films from preformed spinel ferrite (MFe2O4, M = Mn, Co) nanoparticles (NPs) is explored. The characterization, performed using a combination of structural and magnetic techniques, reveals the complexity of the resulting nanocomposites. Results show that during the YBCO growth process, most of the NPs evolve to ferromagnetic double-perovskite (DP) phases (YBaCu2-x-yFexCoyO5/YBaCoFeO5), while a residual fraction of preformed ferrite NPs may remain in the YBCO matrix. Magnetometry cycles reflect the presence of ferromagnetic structures associated to the DPs embedded in the superconducting films. In addition, a superparamagnetic signal that may be associated with a diluted system of ferromagnetic clusters around complex defects has been detected, as previously observed in standard YBCO films and nanocomposites. The hybrid nanocomposites described in this work will allow studying several fundamental issues like the nucleation of superconductivity and the mechanisms of magnetic vortex pinning in superconducting/ferromagnetic heterostructures.

Abstract: The creation and ordering of A-cation vacancies and the effect of cation substitutions in the scheelite-type framework are investigated as a factor for controlling the scheelite-type structure and luminescence properties. AgxEu3+(2−x)/3□(1−2x)/3WO4 and AgxGd(2−x)/3−0.3Eu3+0.3□(1−2x)/3WO4 (x = 0.5−0) scheelite-type phases were synthesized by a solid state method, and their structures were investigated using a combination of transmission electron microscopy techniques and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Transmission electron microscopy also revealed the (3 + 1)D incommensurately modulated character of AgxEu3+(2−x)/3□(1−2x)/3WO4 (x = 0.286, 0.2) phases. The crystal structures of the scheelite-based AgxEu3+(2−x)/3□(1−2x)/3WO4 (x = 0.5, 0.286, 0.2) red phosphors have been refined from high resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. The luminescence properties of all phases under near-ultraviolet (n-UV) light have been investigated. The excitation spectra of AgxEu3+(2−x)/3□(1−2x)/3WO4 (x = 0.5, 0.286,0.2) phosphors show the strongest absorption at 395 nm, which matches well with the commercially available n-UV-emitting GaN-based LED chip. The excitation spectra of the Eu2/3□1/3WO4 and Gd0.367Eu0.30□1/3WO4 phases exhibit the highest contribution of the charge transfer band at 250 nm and thus the most efficient energy transfer mechanism between the host and the luminescent ion as compared to direct excitation. The emission spectra of all samples indicate an intense red emission due to the 5D0 → 7F2 transition of Eu3+. Concentration dependence of the 5D0 → 7F2 emission for AgxEu(2−x)/3□(1−2x)/3WO4 samples differs from the same dependence for the earlier studied NaxEu3+(2−x)/3□(1−2x)/3MoO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) phases. The intensity of the 5D0 → 7F2 emission is reduced almost 7 times with decreasing x from 0.5 to 0, but it practically does not change in the range from x = 0.286 to x = 0.200. The emission spectra of Gd-containing samples show a completely different trend as compared to only Eu-containing samples. The Eu3+ emission under excitation of Eu3+(5L6) level (λex = 395 nm) increases more than 2.5 times with the increasing Gd3+ concentration from 0.2 (x = 0.5) to 0.3 (x = 0.2) in the AgxGd(2−x)/3−0.3Eu3+0.3□(1−2x)/3WO4, after which it remains almost constant for higher Gd3+ concentrations.

Abstract: Direct exchange interaction allows spins to be magnetically ordered. Additionally, it can be an efficient manipulation pathway for low-powered spintronic logic devices. We present a novel logic scheme driven by exchange between two distinct regions in a composite magnetic layer containing a bistable canted magnetization configuration. By applying a magnetic field pulse to the input region, the magnetization state is propagated to the output via spin-to-spin interaction in which the output state is given by the magnetization orientation of the output region. The dependence of this scheme with input field conditions is extensively studied through a wide range of micromagnetic simulations. These results allow different logic operating modes to be extracted from the simulation results, and majority logic is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract: The cytoglobins of the Antarctic fish Chaenocephalus aceratus and Dissostichus mawsoni have many features in common with human cytoglobin. These cytoglobins are heme proteins in which the ferric and ferrous forms have a characteristic hexacoordination of the heme iron, i.e. axial ligation of two endogenous histidine residues, as confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance, resonance Raman and optical absorption spectroscopy. The combined spectroscopic analysis revealed only small variations in the heme-pocket structure, in line with the small variations observed for the redox potential. Nevertheless, some striking differences were also discovered. Resonance Raman spectroscopy showed that the stabilization of an exogenous heme ligand, such as CO, occurs differently in human cytoglobin in comparison with Antarctic fish cytoglobins. Furthermore, while it has been extensively reported that human cytoglobin is essentially monomeric and can form an intramolecular disulfide bridge that can influence the ligand binding kinetics, 3D modeling of the Antarctic fish cytoglobins indicates that the cysteine residues are too far apart to form such an intramolecular bridge. Moreover, gel filtration and mass spectrometry reveal the occurrence of non-covalent multimers (up to pentamers) in the Antarctic fish cytoglobins that are formed at low concentrations. Stabilization of these oligomers by disulfide-bridge formation is possible, but not essential. If intermolecular disulfide bridges are formed, they influence the heme-pocket structure, as is shown by EPR measurements.

Abstract: Land-use suitability is the ability of a given type of land to support a defined use. Analysis of land-use suitability requires the consideration of a variety of criteria, not only the natural/physical capacity of a land unit, but also its socioeconomic and environmental impact implications. As land suitability is assessed within a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment, it is formulated as a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. The study was conducted in the Sangab Plain in northeast Iran. We investigated the study areas suitability for grassland and agricultural uses. A hybrid method of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and GIS methodology was applied to evaluate land suitability based on a set of criteria and sub-criteria. Results showed that 20% of the study area had high (rich), 65% had medium (fair), and 15% had low (poor) suitability for agriculture. In terms of grassland use, the comparable amounts were, respectively, about 7%, 23%, and 70%. The lands of the Sangab Plain have medium potential for agricultural use and low potential for grassland use. This paper used both qualitative and quantitative techniques.

Abstract: Advances in the synthesis of porous microspheres and in their functionalization are increasing the interest in applications of alumina. This paper deals with coatings plasma deposited from 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane by means of dielectric barrier discharges on alumina porous microspheres, shaped by a vibrational droplet coagulation technique. Aims of the work are the functionalization of the particles with active amino groups, as well as the evaluation of their surface coverage and of the penetration of the coatings into their pores. A multi-diagnostic approach was used for the chemical/morphological characterization of the particles. It was found that 5 min exposure to plasma discharges promotes the deposition of homogeneous coatings onto the microspheres and within their pores, down to 1 μm.

Abstract: Besides classical electrode materials pertaining to Li-ion batteries, recent interest has been devoted to pairs of active redox composites having a redox center and an intercalant source. Taking advantage of the NaPFG salt decomposition above 4.2 V. we extrapolate this concept to the electrochemical in situ preparation of F-based MnO composite electrodes for Na-ion batteries. Such electrodes exhibit a reversible discharge capacity of 145 mAh g(-1) at room temperature. The amorphization of pristine MnO electrode after activation is attributed to the electrochemical grinding effect caused by substantial atomic migration and lattice strain build-up upon cycling. Abstract: The amorphous oxide semiconductor Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide (a-IGZO) has gained a large technological relevance as a semiconductor for thin-film transistors in active-matrix displays. Yet, major questions remain unanswered regarding the atomic origin of threshold voltage control, doping level, hysteresis, negative bias stress (NBS), and negative bias illumination stress (NBIS). We undertake a systematic study of the effects of oxygen vacancies on the properties of a-IGZO by relating experimental observations to microscopic insights gained from first-principle simulations. It is found that the amorphous nature of the semiconductor allows unusually large atomic relaxations. In some cases, oxygen vacancies are found to behave as perfect shallow donors without the formation of structural defects. Once structural defects are formed, their transition states can vary upon charge and discharge cycles. We associate this phenomenon to a possible presence of hysteresis in the transfer curve of the devices. Under NBS, the creation of oxygen vacancies becomes energetically very stable, hence thermodynamically very likely. This generation process is correlated with the occurrence of the negative bias stress instabilities observed in a-IGZO transistors. While oxygen vacancies can therefore be related to NBS and hysteresis, it appears unlikely from our results that they are direct causes of NBIS, contrary to common belief.

Abstract: Supramolecular polymeric materials constitute a unique class of materials held together by non-covalent interactions. These dynamic supramolecular interactions can provide unique properties such as a strong decrease in viscosity upon relatively mild heating, as well as self-healing ability. In this study we demonstrate the unique mechanical properties of phase-separated electrostatic supramolecular materials based on mixing of low molar mass, oligomeric, ABA-triblock copolyacrylates with oppositely charged outer blocks. In case of well-chosen mixtures and block lengths, the charged blocks are phase separated from the uncharged matrix in a hexagonally packed nanomorphology as observed by transmission electron microscopy. Thermal and mechanical analysis of the material shows that the charged sections have a T-g closely beyond room temperature, whereas the material shows an elastic response at temperatures far above this T-g ascribed to the electrostatic supramolecular interactions. A broad set of materials having systematic variations in triblock copolymer structures was used to provide insights in the mechanical properties and and self-healing ability in correlation with the nanomorphology of the materials.

Abstract: Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the structural properties of a two-dimensional ensemble of magnetic rods, which are modeled as aligned single dipolar beads. The obtained self-assembled configurations can be characterized as (1) clusters, (2) percolated, and (3) ordered structures, and their structural properties are investigated in detail. By increasing the aspect ratio of the magnetic rods, we show that the percolation transition is suppressed due to the reduced mobility of the rods in two dimensions. Such a behavior is opposite to the one observed in three dimensions. A magnetic bulk phase is found with local ferromagnetic order and an unusual nonmonotonic behavior of the nematic order is observed.

Abstract: Using advanced electron microscopy, we demonstrate the presence of Ti2+ on the 001 surfaces of heavily reduced strontium titanate nanocubes. While high-angle annular dark field images show a clear difference between the surfaces of the unreduced and reduced samples, electron energy loss spectroscopy detects the presence of Ti2+ on the surface of the reduced cubes. Conventional reduction only leads to the formation of Ti3+ and involves the use of high temperatures. In our case, reduction is achieved at relatively lower temperatures in the solid state using sodium borohydride as the reducing agent. Our findings provide insights into the optical properties of the samples and provide a convenient method to produce highly reduced surfaces that could demonstrate a range of exotic physical phenomena

Abstract: The energy spectrum and eigenstates of single-layer black phosphorus nanoribbons in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and an in-plane transverse electric field are investigated by means of a tight-binding method, and the effect of different types of edges is examined analytically. A description based on a continuum model is proposed using an expansion of the tight-binding model in the long-wavelength limit. Thewave functions corresponding to the flatband part of the spectrum are obtained analytically and are shown to agree well with the numerical results from the tight-binding method for both narrow (10 nm) and wide (100 nm) nanoribbons. Analytical expressions for the critical magnetic field at which Landau levels are formed and the ranges of wave numbers in the dispersionless flatband segments in the energy spectra are derived. We examine the evolution of the Landau levels when an in-plane lateral electric field is applied, and we determine analytically how the edge states shift withmagnetic field. For wider nanoribbons, the conductance is shown to have a characteristic staircase shape in combined magnetic and electric fields. Some of the stairs in zigzag and skewed armchair nanoribbons originate from edge states that are found in the band gap.

Abstract: We present a 3D and 2D Cartesian quasi-neutral plasma model for a low current argon gliding arc discharge, including strong interactions between the gas flow and arc plasma column.
The 3D model is applied only for a short time of 0.2 ms due to its huge computational cost. It mainly serves to verify the reliability of the 2D model. As the results in 2D compare well with those in 3D, they can be used for a better understanding of the gliding arc basic characteristics. More specifically, we investigate the back-breakdown phenomenon induced by an artificially controlled plasma channel, and we discuss its effect on the gliding arc characteristics. The
back-breakdown phenomenon, or backward-jump motion of the arc, as observed in the experiments, results in a drop of the gas temperature, as well as in a delay of the arc velocity with respect to the gas flow velocity, allowing more gas to pass through the arc, and thus increasing the efficiency of the gliding arc for gas treatment applications.

Abstract: The modelling of a gliding arc discharge (GAD) is studied by means of the quasineutral (QN) plasma modelling approach. The model is first evaluated for reliability and proper description of a gliding arc discharge at atmospheric pressure, by comparing with a more elaborate non-quasineutral (NQN) plasma model in two different geometries – a 2D axisymmetric and a Cartesian geometry. The NQN model is considered as a reference, since it provides a continuous self-consistent plasma description, including the near electrode regions. In general, the results of the QN model agree very well with those obtained from the NQN model. The small differences between both models are attributed to the approximations in the derivation of the QN model. The use of the QN model provides a substantial reduction of the computation time compared to the NQN model, which is crucial for the development of more complex models in three dimensions or with complicated chemistries. The latter is illustrated for (i) a reverse vortex flow(RVF) GAD in argon, and (ii) a GAD in CO2. The RVF discharge is modelled in three dimensions and the effect of the turbulent heat transport on the plasma and gas characteristics is
discussed. The GAD model in CO2 is in a 1D geometry with axial symmetry and provides results for the time evolution of the electron, gas and vibrational temperature of CO2, as well as for the molar fractions of the different species.

Abstract: A robust and easy to handle 3D porous platinum structure was created via replicating the 3D channel system
of an ordered mesoporous silica material using atomic layer deposition (ALD) over micrometer distances.
After ALD of Pt in the silica material, the host template was digested using hydrogen fluoride (HF). A fully
connected ordered Pt nanostructure was obtained with morphology and sizes corresponding to that of
the pores of the host matrix, as revealed with high-resolution scanning transmission electron
microscopy and electron tomography. The Pt nanostructure consisted of hexagonal Pt rods originating
from the straight mesopores (11 nm) of the host structure and linking features resulting from Pt
replication of the interconnecting mesopore segments (2–4 nm) present in the silica host structure.
Electron tomography of partial replicas, made by incomplete infilling of Zeotile-4 material with Pt,
provided insight in the connectivity and formation mechanism of the Pt nanostructure by ALD. The Pt
replica was evaluated for its potential use as electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction, one of
the half-reactions of water electrolysis, and as microelectrode for biomedical sensing. The Pt replica
showed high activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction and electrochemical characterization revealed
a large impedance improvement in comparison with reference Pt electrodes.
