Abstract: Nearly half of the world cereal production comes from soils low or marginal in plant available zinc, leading to unsustainable and poor quality grain production. Therefore, the effects of nitrogen (N) rate and application time on zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) concentration in wheat grain were investigated. Wheat (Triticum aestivum var. Krabat) was grown in a growth chamber with 8 and 16 h of day and night periods, respectively. The N rates were 29, 43, and 57 mg N kg(-1) soil, equivalent to 80, 120, and 160 kg N ha(-1). Zinc and Fe were applied at 10 mg kg(-1) growth media. In one of the N treatments, additional Zn and Fe through foliar spray (6 mg of Zn or Fe in 10 ml water / pot) was applied. Micro-analytical localization of Zn and Fe within grain was performed using scanning macro-X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The following data were obtained: grain and straw yield pot 1, 1000 grains weight, number of grains pot 1, whole grain protein content, concentration of Zn and Fe in the grains. Grain yield increased from 80 to 120 kg N ha(-1) rates only and decreased at 160 kg N ha(-1) g. Relatively higher protein content and Zn and Fe concentration in the grain were recorded with the split N application of 160 kg N ha(-1). Soil and foliar supply of Zn and Fe (Zn + Fes+f), with a single application of 120 kg N ha(-1) N at sowing, increased the concentration of Zn by 46% and of Fe by 35%, as compared to their growth media application only. Line scans of freshly cut areas of sliced grains showed co-localization of Zn and Fe within germ, crease and aleurone. We thus conclude that split application of N at 160 kg ha(-1) at sowing and stem elongation, in combination with soil and foliar application of Zn and Fe, can be a good agricultural practice to enhance protein content and the Zn and Fe concentration in grain.

Abstract: We study the structure and phonon spectrum of a two-dimensional bilayer system of classical charged dipoles oriented perpendicular to the plane of the layers for equal density in each layer. This system can be tuned through six different crystalline phases by changing the interlayer separation or the charge and/or dipole moment of the particle. The presence of the charge on the dipole particles is responsible for the nucleation of five staggered phases and a disordered phase which are not found in the magnetic dipole bilayer system. These extra phases are a consequence of the competition between the repulsive Coulomb and the attractive dipole interlayer interaction. We present the phase diagram and determine the order of the phase transitions. The phonon spectrum of the system was calculated within the harmonic approximation, and a nonmonotonic behavior of the phonon spectrum is found as a function of the effective strength of the interparticle interaction. The stability of the different phases is determined.

Abstract: Reducing the size of a superconductor below its characteristic length scales can either enhance or suppress its critical temperature (T-c). Depending on the bulk value of the electron-phonon coupling strength, electronic and phonon confinement effects will play different roles in the modification of T-c. Experimentally disentangling each contribution has remained a challenge. We have measured both the phonon density of states and T-c of Sn nanowires with diameters of 18, 35, and 100 nm in order to quantify the effects of phonon confinement on superconductivity. We observe a shift of the phonon frequency towards the low-energy region and an increase in the electron-phonon coupling constant that can account for the measured increase in T-c.

Abstract: We use a variational technique to study the many-body phase diagram of electrons and holes in n-doped and p-doped monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We find a total of four different phases. (i) A fully spin polarized and valley polarized ferromagnetic state. (ii) A state with no global spin polarization but with spin polarization in each valley separately, i.e., spin-valley locking. (iii) A state with spin polarization in one of the valleys and little to no spin polarization in the other valley. (iv) A paramagnetic state with no valley polarization. These phases are separated by first-order phase transitions and are determined by the particle density and the dielectric constant of the substrate. We find that in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field the four different phases persist. In the case of n-doped MoS2, a fifth phase, which is completely valley polarized but not spin polarized, appears for magnetic fields larger than 7 T and for magnetic fields larger than 23 T completely replaces the second phase.

Abstract: We consider a junction between two topological insulators and calculate the properties of the interface states with an effective low-energy Hamiltonian for topological insulators with a single cone on the surface. This system bears a close resemblance to bilayer graphene, as both result from the hybridization of Dirac cones. We find gapless interface states not only when the helicity directions of the topological surface states are oppositely oriented, but they can also exist if they are equally oriented. Furthermore, we find that the existence of the interface states can be understood from the closing of the bulk gap when the helicity changes orientation. Recently superluminal tachyonic excitations were also claimed to exist at the interface between topological insulators. However, here we show that these interface states do not exist. Abstract: Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) controlled band structure of a two-dimensional superlattice allows for the modulation of the conductance of finite size devices by changing the strength of the SOI. We consider rectangular arrays and find that the temperature dependence of the conductance disappears for high temperatures, but the strength of the SOI still affects the conductance at these temperatures. The modulation effect can be seen even in the presence of strong dephasing, which can be important for practical applications.

Abstract: The tunneling coupling in three vertically stacked (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum rings is investigated. With increasing inter-ring separation (d), we find that the nonuniform strain results into a crossing of the lowest-energy electron states. Strain is also responsible for an increase in the ground electron energy above the level in the single quantum ring. The ground hole energy level exhibits decrease when d decreases, which is typical for antibonding states in an unstrained structure. These effects lead to a local maximum in the dependence of the ground-state exciton energy on d. Our theoretical results compare well with recent photoluminescence measurements but deviate considerably from the calculations for flat bands in quantum-ring molecules. We conclude that the nonuniform character of the strain distribution gives rise to a peculiar exciton hybridization in self-assembled quantum-ring molecules.

Abstract: We present a generalized Galitskii approach for the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the two-particle vertex function of a Fermi system with the resonant interaction by accounting for the resonant state in the scattering potential and utilizing the universal form of the resonant scattering amplitude. The procedure can be carried out both for the normal as well as for the condensate state. In both cases, the vertex function in the vicinity of the resonance is shown to formally coincide with that obtained for a weakly attractive Fermi gas. Thus we justify the popular calculational framework in which results for the weakly attractive Fermi gas are formally extrapolated into the domain of strong coupling, and further to the repulsive side of the resonance, where molecular states are formed.

Abstract: We calculate the fluorescence of electron spins confined to a plane and driven into resonance by a magnetic field gradient and a constant magnetic field applied at right angles to each other. We solve the equation of motion of two-dimensional electrons in the magnetic field gradient to derive the dispersion curve of spin oscillators, the amplitude of electron oscillations, the effective magnetic field sensed by the electron spin, and the rate at which electrons are injected from an electrode into spin oscillators. We then switch on the interaction between the spin magnetic dipole and the electromagnetic field to find the fluorescence power radiated by the individual spin oscillators. The rate of radiative decay is first derived, followed by the probability of sequential photon emission whereby a series of spontaneous decays occurs at random times separated by intervals during which the spin performs Rabi oscillations. The quantum correlations between random radiative decays manifest as bursts of emission at regular intervals along the wire. We integrate all multiphoton processes to obtain an exact analytical expression for the radiated electromagnetic power. The present theory obtains all parameters of the problem including magnetodipole coupling, the particle dwell time in the magnetic field gradient, and the spin polarization of the incoming current. The output power contains a fine structure arising from the anharmonicity of electron oscillations and from nonlinear optical effects which both give satellite emission peaks at odd multiples of the fundamental frequency.

Abstract: The densities of phonon states of thin Sn films on InSb substrates are determined during different stages of the alpha-Sn to beta-Sn phase transition using nuclear inelastic x-ray scattering. The vibrational entropy and internal energy per atom as a function of temperature are obtained by numerical integration of the phonon density of states. The free energy as a function of temperature for the nanoscale samples is compared to the free energy obtained from ab initio calculations of bulk tin in the alpha-Sn and beta-Sn phase. In thin films this phase transition is governed by the interplay between the vibrational behavior of the film (the phase transition is driven by the vibrational entropy) and the stabilizing influence of the substrate (which depends on the film thickness). This brings a deeper understanding of the role of lattice vibrations in the phase transition of nanoscale Sn.

Abstract: Using three-dimensional (3D) numerical discretization of the GinzburgLandau (GL) equations, we investigate the superconducting state of a sphere with a piercing hole in the presence of a magnetic field. In the case of samples with central perforation, in axially applied homogeneous magnetic field, we realized unconventional vortex states of broken symmetry due to complex, 3D competing interactions, which depend on the GL parameter ê. For certain sizes of the sample, non-hysteretic multi-vortex entry and exit is predicted with the non-existence of some vorticities as stable states. In a tilted magnetic field, we studied the gradual transformation of 3D flux patterns into 1D vortex chains, where vortices align along the perforation, and the evolvement of the multi-vortex entry as well. We analyze the flux-guiding ability of the hole in a tilted field, which leads to fractional flux response in magnetization M(H) curves.

Abstract: Microdischarges are an important type of plasma discharge that possess several unique characteristics, such as the presence of a stable glow discharge, high plasma density and intense excimer radiation, leading to several potential applications. The intense and controllable gas heating within the extremely small dimensions of microdischarges has been exploited in microthruster technologies by incorporating a micro-nozzle to generate the thrust. This kind of microthruster has a significantly improved specific impulse performance compared to conventional cold gas thrusters, and can meet the requirements arising from the emerging development and application of micro-spacecraft. In this paper, we performed a self-consistent 2D particle-in-cell simulation, with a Monte Carlo collision model, of a microdischarge operating in a prototype micro-plasma thruster with a hollow cylinder geometry and a divergent micro-nozzle. The model takes into account the thermionic electron emission including the Schottky effect, the secondary electron emission due to cathode bombardment by the plasma ions, several different collision processes, and a non-uniform argon background gas density in the cathode-anode gap. Results in the high-pressure (several hundreds of Torr), high-current (mA) operating regime showing the behavior of the plasma density, potential distribution, and energy flux towards the hollow cathode and anode are presented and discussed. In addition, the results of simulations showing the effect of different argon gas pressures, cathode material work function and discharge voltage on the operation of the microdischarge thruster are presented. Our calculated properties are compared with experimental data under similar conditions and qualitative and quantitative agreements are reached.

Abstract: The metal-insulator transition (MIT) in strongly correlated oxides is a topic of great interest for its potential applications, such as Mott field effect transistors and sensors. We report that the MIT in high quality epitaxial SrVO3 (SVO) thin films is present as the film thickness is reduced, lowering the dimensionality of the system, and electron-electron correlations start to become the dominant interactions. The critical thickness of 3 u.c is achieved by avoiding effects due to off-stoichiometry using optimal growth conditions and excluding any surface effects by a STO capping layer. Compared to the single SVO thin films, conductivity enhancement in SVO/STO superlattices is observed. This can be explained by the interlayer coupling effect between SVO sublayers in the superlattices. Magnetoresistance and Hall measurements indicate that the dominant driving force of MIT is the electron–electron interaction.
