“Study on the giant positive magnetoresistance and Hall effect in ultrathin graphite flakes”. Abstract: In this paper, we report on the electronic transport properties of mesoscopic, ultrathin graphite flakes with a thickness corresponding to a stack of 150 graphene layers. The graphite flakes show an unexpectedly strong positive magnetoresistance (PMR) already at room temperature, which scales in good approximation with the square of the magnetic field. Furthermore, we show that the resistivity is unaffected by magnetic fields oriented in plane with the graphene layers. Hall effect measurements indicate that the charge carriers are p-type and their concentration increases with increasing temperature while the mobility is decreasing. The Hall voltage is non-linear in higher magnetic fields. Possible origins of the observed effects are discussed. “The ground states of the two-component order parameter superconductor”. Doria MM, de Romaguera ARC, Peeters FM, Europhysics letters 92, 17004 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1209/0295-5075/92/17004
Abstract: We show that in presence of an applied external field the two-component order parameter superconductor falls in two categories of ground states, namely, in the traditional Abrikosov ground state or in a new ground state fitted to describe a superconducting layer with texture, that is, patched regions separated by a phase difference of pi. The existence of these two kinds of ground states follows from the sole assumption that the total supercurrent is the sum of the two individual supercurrents and is independent of any consideration about the free energy expansion. Uniquely defined relations between the current density and the superfluid density hold for these two ground states, which also determine the magnetization in terms of average values of the order parameters. Because these ground-state conditions are also Bogomolny equations we construct the free energy for the two-component superconductor which admits the Bogomolny solution at a special coupling value. Abstract: We investigate the influence of the spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) on the electron distribution and the optical absorption of a two-electron quantum dot. It is shown that the interplay between the SOIs makes the two-electron quantum dot behave like two laterally coupled quantum dots and the anisotropic distribution can be rotated from [110] to [11®0] by reversing the direction of the perpendicular electric field and detect it through the optical absorption spectrum.

Abstract: Using a combination of the phenomenological GinzburgLandau theory and micromagnetic simulations, we study properties of a superconducting film with an array of soft magnetic dots on top. An external in-plane magnetic field gradually drives the magnets from an out-of-plane or magnetic vortex state to an in-plane single-domain state, which changes spatially the distribution of the superconducting condensate. If induced by the magnets, the vortexantivortex molecules exhibit rich transitions as a function of the applied in-plane field. At the same time, we show how the magnetic dots act as very effective dynamic pinning centers for vortices in an applied perpendicular magnetic field.

Abstract: Using three-dimensional (3D) numerical discretization of the GinzburgLandau (GL) equations, we investigate the superconducting state of a sphere with a piercing hole in the presence of a magnetic field. In the case of samples with central perforation, in axially applied homogeneous magnetic field, we realized unconventional vortex states of broken symmetry due to complex, 3D competing interactions, which depend on the GL parameter ê. For certain sizes of the sample, non-hysteretic multi-vortex entry and exit is predicted with the non-existence of some vorticities as stable states. In a tilted magnetic field, we studied the gradual transformation of 3D flux patterns into 1D vortex chains, where vortices align along the perforation, and the evolvement of the multi-vortex entry as well. We analyze the flux-guiding ability of the hole in a tilted field, which leads to fractional flux response in magnetization M(H) curves.

“Stress dependence of the suspended graphene work function : vacuum Kelvin probe force microscopy and density functional theory”. Volodin A, Van Haesendonck C, Leenaerts O, Partoens B, Peeters FM, Applied physics letters 110, 193101 (2017). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.4982931
Abstract: We report on work function measurements on graphene, which is exfoliated over a predefined array of wells in silicon oxide, by Kelvin probe force microscopy operating in a vacuum. The obtained graphene sealed microchambers can support large pressure differences, providing controllable stretching of the nearly impermeable graphene membranes. These measurements allow detecting variations of the work function induced by the mechanical stresses in the suspended graphene where the work function varies linearly with the strain and changes by 62 +/- 2 meV for 1 percent of strain. Our related ab initio calculations result in a work function variation that is a factor of 1.4 larger than the experimental value. The limited discrepancy between the theory and the experiment can be accounted for by a charge transfer from the unstrained to the strained graphene regions. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract: Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the structural properties of a two-dimensional ensemble of magnetic rods, which are modeled as aligned single dipolar beads. The obtained self-assembled configurations can be characterized as (1) clusters, (2) percolated, and (3) ordered structures, and their structural properties are investigated in detail. By increasing the aspect ratio of the magnetic rods, we show that the percolation transition is suppressed due to the reduced mobility of the rods in two dimensions. Such a behavior is opposite to the one observed in three dimensions. A magnetic bulk phase is found with local ferromagnetic order and an unusual nonmonotonic behavior of the nematic order is observed.

Abstract: The energy spectrum and eigenstates of single-layer black phosphorus nanoribbons in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and an in-plane transverse electric field are investigated by means of a tight-binding method, and the effect of different types of edges is examined analytically. A description based on a continuum model is proposed using an expansion of the tight-binding model in the long-wavelength limit. Thewave functions corresponding to the flatband part of the spectrum are obtained analytically and are shown to agree well with the numerical results from the tight-binding method for both narrow (10 nm) and wide (100 nm) nanoribbons. Analytical expressions for the critical magnetic field at which Landau levels are formed and the ranges of wave numbers in the dispersionless flatband segments in the energy spectra are derived. We examine the evolution of the Landau levels when an in-plane lateral electric field is applied, and we determine analytically how the edge states shift withmagnetic field. For wider nanoribbons, the conductance is shown to have a characteristic staircase shape in combined magnetic and electric fields. Some of the stairs in zigzag and skewed armchair nanoribbons originate from edge states that are found in the band gap.

“Topological Dirac semimetal phase in <tex>, $GexSny alloys”. Kong X, Li L, Peeters FM, Applied physics letters 112, 251601 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.5037121
Abstract: Recently, two stable allotropes (germancite and stancite) for the group IV elements (Ge and Sn) with a staggered layered dumbell structure were proposed to be three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetals [Phys. Rev. B 93, 241117 (2016)]. A pair of Dirac points is on the rotation axis away from the time-reversal invariant momentum, and the stability of the 3D bulk Dirac points is protected by the C-3 rotation symmetry. Here, we use the first principles calculations to investigate GexSny alloys which share the same rhombohedral crystal structure with the space group of D-3d(6). Six GexSny alloys are predicted to be energetically and dynamically stable, where (x, y) = (8, 6) and (6, 8) and the alpha and beta phases of (10, 4) and (4, 10). Our results demonstrate that all the six GexSny alloys are topological Dirac semimetals. The different nontrivial surface states and surface Fermi arcs are identified. Our work will substantially enrich the family of 3D Dirac semimetals which are within the reach of experimental realization. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract: We use a variational technique to study the many-body phase diagram of electrons and holes in n-doped and p-doped monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We find a total of four different phases. (i) A fully spin polarized and valley polarized ferromagnetic state. (ii) A state with no global spin polarization but with spin polarization in each valley separately, i.e., spin-valley locking. (iii) A state with spin polarization in one of the valleys and little to no spin polarization in the other valley. (iv) A paramagnetic state with no valley polarization. These phases are separated by first-order phase transitions and are determined by the particle density and the dielectric constant of the substrate. We find that in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field the four different phases persist. In the case of n-doped MoS2, a fifth phase, which is completely valley polarized but not spin polarized, appears for magnetic fields larger than 7 T and for magnetic fields larger than 23 T completely replaces the second phase.

Abstract: We investigate the energy spectrum, wave functions, and local density of states of an electrical dipole placed on a sheet of gapped graphene as function of the charge strength Z alpha for different sizes of the dipole and for different regularization parameters. The dipole is modeled as consisting of a positive and negative charge. Bound states are found within the gap region with some energy levels that anticross and others that cross as function of the impurity strength Z alpha. The anticrossings are more pronounced and move to higher charges Z alpha when the length of the dipole decreases. These energy levels turn into atomic collapse states when they enter the positive (or negative) energy continuum. A smooth transition from the single-impurity behavior to the dipole one is observed: The states diving towards the continuum in the single-impurity case are gradually replaced by a series of anticrossings that represent a continuation of the diving states in the single-impurity case. By studying the local density of states at the edge of the dipole we show how the series of anticrossings persist in the positive and negative continuum.

Abstract: Reducing the size of a superconductor below its characteristic length scales can either enhance or suppress its critical temperature (T-c). Depending on the bulk value of the electron-phonon coupling strength, electronic and phonon confinement effects will play different roles in the modification of T-c. Experimentally disentangling each contribution has remained a challenge. We have measured both the phonon density of states and T-c of Sn nanowires with diameters of 18, 35, and 100 nm in order to quantify the effects of phonon confinement on superconductivity. We observe a shift of the phonon frequency towards the low-energy region and an increase in the electron-phonon coupling constant that can account for the measured increase in T-c.

“Vibrational properties of germanane and fluorinated germanene in the chair, boat, and zigzag-line configurations”. Abstract: The electronic and vibrational properties of germanane and fluorinated germanene are studied within density functional theory (DFT) and density functional perturbation theory frameworks. Different structural configurations of germanane and fluorinated germanene are investigated. The energy difference between the different configurations are consistently smaller than the energy of thermal fluctuations for all the analyzed DFT functionals LDA, GGA, and hybrid functionals, which implies that, in principle, it is possible to find these different configurations in different regions of the sample as minority phases or local defects. We calculate the Raman and infrared spectra for these configurations by using ab initio calculations and compare it with available experimental spectra for germanane. Our results show the presence of minority phases compatible with the configurations analyzed in this work. As these low energy configurations are metastable the present work shows that the synthesis of these energy competing phases is feasible by selectively changing the synthesis conditions, which is an opportunity to expand in this way the availability of new two-dimensional compounds.

Abstract: The densities of phonon states of thin Sn films on InSb substrates are determined during different stages of the alpha-Sn to beta-Sn phase transition using nuclear inelastic x-ray scattering. The vibrational entropy and internal energy per atom as a function of temperature are obtained by numerical integration of the phonon density of states. The free energy as a function of temperature for the nanoscale samples is compared to the free energy obtained from ab initio calculations of bulk tin in the alpha-Sn and beta-Sn phase. In thin films this phase transition is governed by the interplay between the vibrational behavior of the film (the phase transition is driven by the vibrational entropy) and the stabilizing influence of the substrate (which depends on the film thickness). This brings a deeper understanding of the role of lattice vibrations in the phase transition of nanoscale Sn.

Abstract: Atomic collapse in graphene nanoribbons behaves in a fundamentally different way as compared to monolayer graphene due to the presence of multiple energy bands and the effect of edges. For armchair nanoribbons we find that bound states gradually transform into atomic collapse states with increasing impurity charge. This is very different in zigzag nanoribbons where multiple quasi-one-dimensional bound states are found that originates from the zero-energy zigzag edge states. They are a consequence of the flat band and the electron distribution of these bound states exhibits two peaks. The lowest-energy edge state transforms from a bound state into an atomic collapse resonance and shows a distinct relocalization from the edge to the impurity position with increasing impurity charge.

Abstract: We examine from first principles the flexoelectric properties of phosphorene nanoribbons under mechanical bending along armchair and zigzag directions. In both cases we find that the radial polarization depends linearly on the strain gradient. The flexoelectricity along the armchair direction is over 40% larger than along the zigzag direction. The obtained flexoelectric coefficients of phosphorene are four orders of magnitude larger than those of graphene and comparable to transition metal dichalcogenides. Analysis of charge density shows that the flexoelectricity mainly arises from the pz orbitals of phosphorus atoms. The electron mobilities in bent phosphorene can be enhanced by over 60% along the armchair direction, which is significantly higher than previous reports of mobility tuned by uniaxial strain. Our results indicate phosphorene is a candidate for a two-dimensional material applicable in flexible-electronic devices.

Abstract: Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures continue to attract intense interest as a route of designing materials with novel properties that cannot be found in nature. Unfortunately, this approach is currently limited to only a few layers that can be stacked on top of each other. Here, we report a bulk vdW material consisting of superconducting 1H TaS2 monolayers interlayered with 1T TaS2 monolayers displaying charge density waves (CDW). This bulk vdW heterostructure is created by phase transition of 1T-TaS2 to 6R at 800 degrees C in an inert atmosphere. Its superconducting transition (T-c) is found at 2.6 K, exceeding the T-c of the bulk 2H phase. Using first-principles calculations, we argue that the coexistence of superconductivity and CDW within 6R-TaS2 stems from amalgamation of the properties of adjacent 1H and 1T monolayers, where the former dominates the superconducting state and the latter the CDW behavior.

Abstract: The diffusion of charged particles interacting through a repulsive Yukawa potential, exp(-r/lambda)/r, confined by a parabolic potential in the y direction and subjected to a periodic substrate potential in the x direction is investigated. Langevin dynamic simulations are used to investigate the effect of the particle density, the amplitude of the periodic substrate, and the range of the interparticle interaction potential on the diffusive behavior of the particles. We found that in general the diffusion is suppressed with increasing the amplitude of the periodic potential, but for specific values of the strength of the substrate potential a remarkable increase of the diffusion is found with increasing the periodic potential amplitude. In addition, we found a strong dependence of the diffusion on the specific arrangement of the particles, e. g., single-chain versus multichain configuration. For certain particle configurations, a reentrant behavior of the diffusion is found as a function of the substrate strength due to structural transitions in the ordering of the particles.

Abstract: We calculate the equilibrium properties and the dynamic response of two vertically coupled circular quantum dots populated by particles of different electrical charge sign, i.e., electrons and holes. The equilibrium density profiles are obtained and used to compute the frequencies and oscillator strengths of magnetoplasma excitations. We find a strong coupling between the modes derived from the center-of-mass modes of the individual dots which leads to an anticrossing with a pronounced oscillator strength transfer from the “acoustic” to the “optical” branch. Also, due to the breaking of the generalized Kohn theorem a number of other than center-of-mass modes are excited whose oscillator strengths, however, are rather weak.

Abstract: Using the time-dependent GinzburgLandau formalism, we study the dynamic properties of a submicron superconducting loop in applied current and in presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The resistive state of the sample is caused by the motion of kinematic vortexantivortex pairs. Vortices and antivortices move in opposite directions to each other, perpendicularly to the applied drive, and the periodic creation and annihilation of such pairs results in periodic oscillations of the voltage across the sample. The dynamics of these kinematic pairs is strongly influenced by the applied magnetic field, which for high fields leads to the flow of just vortices. Kinematic vortices can be temporarily pinned inside the loop with observable trace in the voltage vs. time characteristics.

Abstract: The electronic structure of the conduction and valence bands of a quantum ring containing a layer inside the ring opening is modeled This structure (nanocup) consists of a GaAs nanodisk (the cup s bottom) and a GaAs nanoring (the cup s rim) which encircles the disk The whole system is embedded in an (Al Ga)As matrix and its shape resembles realistic ring structures grown by the droplet epitaxy technique The conduction-band states in the structure are modeled by the single-band effective-mass theory while the 4-band Luttinger-Kohn model is adopted to compute the valence-band states We analyze how the electronic structure of the nanocup evolves from the one of a quantum ring when the size of either the nanodisk or the nanoring is changed For that purpose (1) the width of the ring (2) the disk radius and (3) the disk height are separately varied For dimensions typical for experimentally realized structures we find that the electron wavefunctions are mainly localized inside the ring even when the thickness of the Inner layer is 90% of the ring thickness These calculations indicate that topological phenomena like the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect are negligibly affected by the presence of the layer inside the ring (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

“Generic ordering of structural transitions in quasi-one-dimensional Wigner crystals”. Galvan-Moya JE, Misko VR, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 90, 094111 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.90.094111
Abstract: We investigate the dependence of the structural phase transitions in an infinite quasi-one-dimensional system of repulsively interacting particles on the profile of the confining channel. Three different functional expressions for the confinement potential related to real experimental systems are used that can be tuned continuously from a parabolic to a hard-wall potential in order to find a thorough understanding of the ordering of the chainlike structure transitions. We resolve the long-standing issue why the most theories predicted a 1-2-4-3-4 sequence of chain configurations with increasing density, while some experiments found the 1-2-3-4 sequence.
