Abstract |
An electrochemical matairesinol biosensor was fabricated by immobilizing tyrosinase on a poly(thionine)/nafion/multi-walled carbon nanotube composite film. A polymeric film of the redox dye thionine enables the stable immobilization of tyrosinase while acting as a mediator for the enzymatic process has been incorporated into the carbon nanotube/nafion composite film. The immobilization method is based on crosslinking of the tyrosinase layer with an electropolymerized film of poly(thionine). The good homogenization of the electron conductor CNTs in the integrated films provides the possibility of a three-dimensional electron conductive network. The biosensor was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization. The composite electrode exhibits catalytic activity, high sensitivity, stability and is applicable over a wide range of concentrations from 180 nM to 4.33 μM with a detection limit (LOD) of 37 nM. The obtained results suggest that the developed sensor can be successfully used for the determination of phenolic endocrine disruptors over a concentration range covering their environmental levels. |

Abstract |
We calculate the quasiparticle energy spectrum of SnO2 within the GW approximation, properly taking into account the contribution of core levels to the energy corrections. The calculated fundamental gap is of 3.85 eV. We propose that the difference with respect to the experimental optical gap (3.6 eV) is due to excitonic effects in the latter. We further consider the effect applied on uniaxial pressure along the c-axis. Compared to GW, the effect of pressure on the quasiparticle energies and band gap is underestimated by the local-density approximation. The quasiparticle effective masses, however, appear to be well described by the latter. |

Abstract |
Pristine and oxygen plasma functionalised carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were studied after the evaporation of Pt and Pd atoms. High resolution transmission electron microscopy shows the formation of metal nanoparticles at the CNT surface. Oxygen functional groups grafted by the plasma functionalization act as nucleation sites for metal nanoparticles. Analysis of the C1s core level spectra reveals that there is no covalent bonding between the Pt or Pd atoms and the CNT surface. Unlike other transition metals such as titanium and copper, neither Pd nor Pt show strong oxygen interaction or surface oxygen scavenging behaviour. |

Abstract |
Ferropericlase (fPer) inclusions from kimberlitic lower-mantle diamonds recovered in the Juina area, Mato Grosso State, Brazil were analyzed with transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy and the flank method. The presence of exsolved non-stoichiometric Fe3+-enriched clusters, varying in size from 1-2 nm to 10-15 nm and comprising similar to 3.64 vol.% of fPer was established. The oxidation conditions necessary for fPer formation within the uppermost lower mantle (P = 25 GPa, T = 1960 K) vary over a wide range: Delta log f(o2) (IW) from 1.58 to 7.76 (Delta = 6.2), reaching the fayalite-magnetite-quartz (FMQ) oxygen buffer position. This agrees with the identification of carbonates and free silica among inclusions within lower-mantle Juina diamonds. On the other hand, at the base of the lower mantle Delta log f(o2) values may lie at and below the iron-wustite (IW) oxygen buffer. Hence, the variations of Delta log f(o2) values within the entire sequence of the lower mantle may reach ten logarithmic units, varying from the IW buffer to the FMQ buffer values. The similarity between lower- and upper-mantle redox conditions supports whole mantle convection, as already suggested on the basis of nitrogen and carbon isotopic compositions in lower- and upper-mantle diamonds. The mechanisms responsible for redox differentiation in the lower mantle may include subduction of oxidized crustal material, mechanical separation of metallic phase(s) and silicate-oxide mineral assemblages enriched in ferric iron, as well as transfer of fused silicate-oxide material presumably also enriched in ferric iron through the mantle. Abstract |
Lithium-rich oxides are a promising class of positive electrode materials for next generation lithium-ion batteries, and oxygen plays a prominent role during electrochemical cycling either by forming peroxo-like species and/or by irreversibly forming oxygen gas during first charge. Here, we present Li-Fe-Te-O materials which show a tremendous amount of oxygen gas release. This oxygen release accounts for nearly all the capacity during the first charge and results in vacancies as seen by transmission electron microscopy. There is no oxidation of either metal during charge but significant changes in their environments. These changes are particularly extreme for tellurium. XRD and neutron powder diffraction both show limited Changes during cycling and no appreciable change in lattice parameters. A density functional theory study of this material is performed and demonstrates that the holes created on some of the oxygen atoms upon oxidation are partially stabilized through the formation of shorter O-O bonds, i.e. (O-2)(n-) species which on further delithiation show a spontaneous O-2 de-coordination from the cationic network and migration to the now empty lithium layer. The rate limiting step during charge is undoubtedly the diffusion of oxygen either out along the lithium layer or via columns of oxygen atoms. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract |
A new AnBnO3n−2 homologous series of anion-deficient perovskites has been evidenced by preparation of the members with n = 5 (Pb2.9Ba2.1Fe4TiO13) and n = 6 (Pb3.8Bi0.2Ba2Fe4.2Ti1.8O16) in a single phase form. The crystal structures of these compounds were determined using a combination of transmission electron microscopy and X-ray and neutron powder diffraction (S.G. Ammm, a = 5.74313(7), b = 3.98402(4), c = 26.8378(4) Å, RI = 0.035, RP = 0.042 for Pb2.9Ba2.1Fe4TiO13 and S.G. Imma, a = 5.7199(1), b = 3.97066(7), c = 32.5245(8) Å, RI = 0.032, RP = 0.037 for Pb3.8Bi0.2Ba2Fe4.2Ti1.8O16). The crystal structures of the AnBnO3n−2 homologues are formed by slicing the perovskite structure with (01)p crystallographic shear (CS) planes. The shear planes remove a layer of oxygen atoms and displace the perovskite blocks with respect to each other by the 1/2[110]p vector. The CS planes introduce edge-sharing connections of the transition metal−oxygen polyhedra at the interface between the perovskite blocks. This results in intrinsically frustrated magnetic couplings between the perovskite blocks due to a competition of the exchange interactions between the edge- and the corner-sharing metal−oxygen polyhedra. Despite the magnetic frustration, neutron powder diffraction and Mssbauer spectroscopy reveal that Pb2.9Ba2.1Fe4TiO13 and Pb3.8Bi0.2Ba2Fe4.2Ti1.8O16 are antiferromagnetically ordered below TN = 407 and 343 K, respectively. The Pb2.9Ba2.1Fe4TiO13 and Pb3.8Bi0.2Ba2Fe4.2Ti1.8O16 compounds are in a paraelectric state in the 5−300 K temperature range. |

Abstract |
The electrical contact of the source and drain regions in state-of-the-art CMOS transistors is nowadays facilitated through NiSi, which is often alloyed with Pt in order to avoid morphological agglomeration of the silicide film. However, the solid-state reaction between as-deposited Ni and the Si substrate exhibits a peculiar change for as-deposited Ni films thinner than a critical thickness of t(c) = 5 nm. Whereas thicker films form polycrystalline NiSi upon annealing above 450 degrees C, thinner films form epitaxial NiSi2 films that exhibit a high resistance toward agglomeration. For industrial applications, it is therefore of utmost importance to assess the critical thickness with high certainty and find novel methodologies to either increase or decrease its value, depending on the aimed silicide formation. This paper investigates Ni films between 0 and 15 nm initial thickness by use of “thickness gradients,” which provide semi-continuous information on silicide formation and stability as a function of as-deposited layer thickness. The alloying of these Ni layers with 10% Al, Co, Ge, Pd, or Pt renders a significant change in the phase sequence as a function of thickness and dependent on the alloying element. The addition of these ternary impurities therefore changes the critical thickness t(c). The results are discussed in the framework of classical nucleation theory. Published by AIP Publishing. |

Abstract |
The obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a sleep related breathing disorder. A popular treatment is the use of a mandibular repositioning appliance (MRA) which advances the mandibula during the sleep and decreases the collapsibility of the upper airway. The success rate of such a device is, however, limited and very variable within a population of patients. Previous studies using computational fluid dynamics have shown that there is a decrease in upper airway resistance in patients who improve clinically due to an MRA. In this article, correlations between patient-specific anatomical and functional parameters are studied to examine how MRA induced biomechanical changes will have an impact on the upper airway resistance. Low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans are made from 143 patients suffering from OSAHS. A baseline scan and a scan after mandibular repositioning (MR) are performed in order to study variations in parameters. It is found that MR using a simulation bite is able to induce resistance changes by changing the pharyngeal lumen. The change in minimal cross-sectional area is the best parameter to predict the change in upper airway resistance. Looking at baseline values, the ideal patients for MR induced resistance decrease seem to be women with short airways, high initial resistance and no baseline occlusion. |

Abstract |
The nucleation and growth of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films on Fe2O3 (hematite), Al2O3 (á-alumina) and SiO2 (á-quartz) are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show the formation of a strong interface region between the substrate and the film in the six systems studied here. A combination of polycrystalline and amorphous phases are observed in the TiO2 films grown on the three substrates. ZnO deposition on the Fe2O3 and Al2O3 crystals yields a monocrystalline film growth. The ZnO film deposited on the SiO2 crystal exhibits less crystallinity. The simulation results are compared with experimental results available in the literature. |

Abstract |
We study the evolution of the structural and electronic properties of crystalline indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) upon amorphization by first-principles calculation. The bottom of the conduction band (BCB) is found to be constituted of a pseudo-band of molecular orbitals that resonate at the same energy on different atomic sites. They display a bonding character between the s orbitals of the metal sites and an anti-bonding character arising from the interaction between the oxygen and metal s orbitals. The energy level of the BCB shifts upon breaking of the crystal symmetry during the amorphization process, which may be attributed to the reduction of the coordination of the cationic centers. The top of the valence band (TVB) is constructed from anti-bonding oxygen p orbitals. In the amorphous state, they have random orientation, in contrast to the crystalline state. This results in the appearance of localized tail states in the forbidden gap above the TVB. Zinc is found to play a predominant role in the generation of these tail states, while gallium hinders their formation. Last, we study the dependence of the fundamental gap and effective mass of IGZO on mechanical strain. The variation of the gap under strain arises from the enhancement of the anti-bonding interaction in the BCB due to the modification of the length of the oxygen-metal bonds and/or to a variation of the cation coordination. This effect is less pronounced for the amorphous material compared to the crystalline material, making amorphous IGZO a semiconductor of choice for flexible electronics. Finally, the effective mass is found to increase upon strain, in contrast to regular materials. This counterintuitive variation is due to the reduction of the electrostatic shielding of the cationic centers by oxygen, leading to an increase of the overlaps between the metal orbitals at the origin of the delocalization of the BCB. For the range of strain typically met in flexible electronics, the induced variation in the effective mass is found to be negligible (less than 1%). |

Abstract |
In this paper, a simulation method is described to predict the etching behaviour of Cl2/O2/Ar inductively coupled plasmas on a Si substrate, as used in shallow trench isolation for the production of electronic devices. The hybrid plasma equipment model (HPEM) developed by Kushner et al is applied to calculate the plasma characteristics in the reactor chamber and two additional Monte Carlo simulations are performed to predict the fluxes, angles and energy of the plasma species bombarding the Si substrate, as well as the resulting surface processes such as etching and deposition. The simulations are performed for a wide variety of operating conditions such as gas composition, chamber pressure, power deposition and substrate bias. It is predicted by the simulations that when the fraction of oxygen in the gas mixture is too high, the oxidation of the Si substrate is superior to the etching of Si by chlorine species, resulting in an etch rate close to zero as is also observed in the experiments. |

Abstract |
The ternary oxides Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 and Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30 were synthesized and their crystal structures and defects were studied by means of X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, and high resolution electron microscopy. The crystal structure of Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 is based on the 8H (cchc)(2) close-packed stacking (a 10.0314 Angstrom, c = 18.869 Angstrom, SG P6(3)/mcm, Z = 3) and that of Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30 and on the 10H (cchcc)(2) close-packed stacking (a = 5.7981 Angstrom, c = 23.755 Angstrom, SG P6(3)/mmc, Z = 1) of BaO3 layers. The structural refinements gave the following values for the R factors for Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 (Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30) R(I) = 0.041 (0.039), R(P) = 0.108 (0.118), and R(wP) = 0.094 (0.099). The main feature of both structures is the presence of two types of face-sharing octahedra (FSO) with different occupancies by Ta atoms, Ti atoms, and vacancies, which results in the formation of a superstructure. It was shown that in the Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 structure these pairs of FSO occur in an ordered fashion and in the Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30 structure in a disordered fashion. The existence of the wide range of solid solutions was shown to be also a consequence of the presence of one of the two types of face-sharing octahedra. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc, |

Abstract |
Environmental factors, such as light, humidity and temperature are triggering agents for the alteration of organic and/or inorganic constituents of oil paintings. The oxidation of the organic material is favored by increasing of relative humidity and temperature, whereas processes involving changes of the oxidation states of a number of inorganic pigments (e.g., vermilion, cadmium yellows, zinc yellows, chrome yellows) are mainly activated by light-exposure. In view of the optimization of the long-term conservation and restoration strategies of paintings it is of relevant interest to establish the consequences of thermal parameters (temperature and relative humidity) on the chemical/photochemical-reactivity and the nature of the alteration products of light sensitive-pigments in oil medium. To this aim here we propose a multi-method analytical approach based on the combination of diffuse reflectance UV-Vis, FTIR, synchrotron radiation (SR)-based micro X-ray fluorescence (mu-XRF)/micro-X-ray absorption neat edge structure ()CANES) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies for studying the effects of different relative humidity conditions before and after light exposure on the reactivity of a series of lead chromate-based pigments [such as PbCrO4 center dot PbO (monoclinic), PbCrO4 (monoclinic) and PbCr0.2S0.8O4 (orthorhombic)] in an oil medium. The investigation of paint models was also compared to that of a late 19th century historical orthorhombic PbCr0.4S0.6O4 oil paint. Diffuse reflectance UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopies were used to obtain information associated with chromatic changes and the formation of organo-metal degradation products at the paint surface. SR-based Cr K-edge mu-XANES/mu-XRF mapping analysis and EPR spectroscopy were employed in a complementary fashion to determine the amount, nature and distribution of Cr(III) and Cr(V)-based alteration compounds within the paints with micrometric spatial resolution. Under the employed thermal aging conditions, lead(II)-carboxylates and reduced Cr-compounds (in abundance of up to about 35% at the surface) have been identified in the lead chromate-based paints. The tendency of chromates to become reduced increased with increasing moisture levels and was favored for the orthorhombic PbCr0.2S0.8O4 compounds. The redox process gave rise to the formation of Cr(V)-species in relative amount much higher than that was formed in the equivalent paint which was exposed only to light. After light-exposure of the thermally aged paints, compounds ascribable to the oxidation of the organic binder were detected for all the types of pigments. Nevertheless, the previous thermal treatment increased the tendency toward photo-reduction of only the PbCr0.2S0.8O4 pigment. For this light-sensitive compound, the thickness variation of the reduced Cr-rich (ca. 70%) photo-alteration layer with moisture levels could be ascribed to a surface passivation phenomenon that had already occurred before photochemical aging. Abstract |
We computed Debye-Waller factors in the temperature range from 0.1 to 1000 K for AlN, GaN, InN, ZnO and CdO with the wurtzite-type structure. The Debye-Waller factors were derived from phonon densities of states obtained from Hellmann-Feynman forces computed within the density-functional-theory formalism. The temperature dependences of the Debye-Waller factors were fitted and fit parameters are given. |

Abstract |
The incommensurately modulated scheelite-like KSm( MoO4)(2) structure has been refined in the monoclinic superspace group I2/b(alpha beta 0)00 by the Rietveld method on the basis of synchrotron radiation powder diffraction data. The systematic broadening of satellite reflections has been accounted for by applying anisotropic microstrain line-broadening. The microstructure has been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The partial disorder of the K and Sm cations in the A position is best approximated by a combination of harmonic and complex crenel functions with (0.952Sm + 0.048K) and (0.952K + 0.048Sm) atomic domains. This combination yields a compositional wave distribution from {KMoO4} to {SmMoO4} observed in the ab structure projection along q. The specific features of KSm(MoO4)(2) and degree of the A-cation ordering are discussed in comparison with the previously reported structure of KNd(MoO4)(2). |

Abstract |
The magnetic proper-ties and their correlation with the microstructure and electrical transport are investigated in La0.88Sr0.1MnO3 films grown on (100)SrTiO3 Single crystal substrates with thickness ranging from 100 to 2500 Angstrom. The ultrathin film (t = 100 Angstrom) has a single ferromagnetic transition (FMT) at T-c of 250 K, whereas the thicker films exhibit two FMTs, with the main one at a lowered T-c of 200 K while the minor one around 300 K. Furthermore, a thickness dependent magnetic anisotropy has been found, strongly indicating the existence of strain effect, which is also revealed by the transmission electron microscopy study. The suppressed Jahn-Teller distortion (JTD) by the epitaxial strain, and the recovered JTD due to the strain relexation are suggested to explain the metallic behavior in thin films and the insulating behavior in the thick film (t = 2500 Angstrom), repectively. |

Abstract |
Microstructures of TiN/CrN multilayer coatings deposited on austenite steel (Cr Ni 18 8) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) are characterized using transmission electron microscopy while their mechanical properties were assessed in a ball-on-disk test. All coatings have the same total thickness of about 1 ìm. The individual layers show a highly defective columnar structure, which is characterized by conventional electron microscopy (TEM) as well as by high resolution TEM. These techniques, combined with measurements of the local chemical composition through EDS prove that PLD allows to produce fully separated CrN and TiN layers. The friction, and consequently the wear, are lowered by increasing the total number of layers in the coating. |

Abstract |
Computer simulations have been performed to describe the effect of small admixtures of hydrogen to an argon glow discharge in the Grimm-type configuration. The two-dimensional density profiles of the various plasma species (i.e., electrons, Ar+, ArH+, H+, H2+ and H3+ ions, H atoms and H2 molecules, Ar metastable atoms and sputtered Cu atoms) are presented for 1% H2 added to the argon glow discharge, and the effect of different H2 additions (varying between 0.1 and 10%) on the species densities, the hydrogen dissociation degree, and the sputtering process, are investigated. Finally, the relative contributions of various production and loss processes for the different plasma species are calculated. |
