“Exciton states and oscillator strength in two vertically coupled InP/InGaP quantum discs”. Tadić, M, Peeters FM, Journal of physics : condensed matter 16, 8633 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1088/0953-8984/16/47/015
Abstract: Quantum mechanical coupling and strain in two vertically arranged InP/InGaP quantum dots is studied as a function of the size of the dots and the spacer thickness. The strain distribution is determined by the continuum mechanical model, while the single-band effective-mass equation and the multiband k (.) p theory are employed to compute the conduction and valence band energy levels, respectively. The exciton states are obtained from an exact diagonalization approach, and we also compute the oscillator strength for recombination. We found that the light holes are confined by strain to the spacer, which is the reason that the hole states exhibit coupling at much larger distances as compared with the electrons. At small d, the doublet structure of the hole energy levels arises as a consequence of the relocation of the light hole from the matrix to the regions located-outside the stack, close to the dot-matrix interface. When d varies, the exciton ground state exhibits numerous anticrossings with other states, which are related to the changing spatial localization of the hole as a function of d. The oscillator strength of the exciton recombination is strongly reduced in a certain range of spacer thicknesses, which effectively turns a bright exciton state into a dark one. This effect is associated with anticrossings between exciton energy levels.

“Giant magnetoresistance in a two-dimensional electron gas modulated by magnetic barriers”. Papp G, Peeters FM, Journal of physics : condensed matter 16, 8275 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1088/0953-8984/16/46/014
Abstract: The temperature-dependent giant magnetoresistance effect is investigated in a magnetically modulated two-dimensional electron gas, which can be realized by depositing two parallel ferromagnets on the top and bottom of a heterostructure. The effective potential for electrons arising for parallel magnetization allows the electrons to resonantly tunnel through the magnetic barriers, while this is excluded in the anti-parallel situation. Such a discrepancy results in a giant magnetoresistance ratio (MRR), which can be up to 10(31)%. The MRR shows a strong dependence on temperature, but our study indicates that for realistic parameters for a GaAs heterostructure the effect can be as high as 10(4)% at 4 K.

“Influence of spin-orbit interaction on the magnetotransport of a periodically modulated two-dimensional electron gas”. Wang XF, Vasilopoulos P, Peeters FM, International journal of modern physics: B: condensed matter physics, statistical physics, applied physics

Abstract: Transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) are studied in the presence of a normal magnetic field B, of a weak one-dimensional (1D) periodic potential modulation V(x) = V(0)cos(Kx), and of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of strength a. For V(x) = 0 the SOI mixes the up and down spin states of neighboring Landau levels into two, unequally spaced energy branches. For V(x) not equal 0 these levels broaden into bands and their bandwidths oscillate with B. The n-th level bandwidth of each series vanishes at different values of B. Relative to the ID-modulated 2DEG without SOI and one flat-band condition, there are two flat-band conditions that depend on a and the transport coefficients can change considerably. For weak a the Weiss oscillations show beating patterns while for strong a the Shubnikov-de Haas ones axe split in two.

Abstract: Ballistic electron transport through a finite chain of quantum circular rings is studied in the presence of the Rashba coupling, of strength a, and of a perpendicular magnetic field B. The transmission and reflection coefficients for a single ring, obtained analytically, help obtain the conductance through a chain of rings as a function of the strength a, the field B, and of the wave vector k of the incident electron. Due to destructive spin interferences caused by the Rashba coupling the chain can be totally opaque for certain ranges of k the width of which depends on values of a and B. Outside these ranges the conductance oscillates with high values between e(2)/h and 2e(2)/h. The effect of a periodic modulation of a or B on the conductance gaps is investigated. A periodic, square-wave conductance pattern, pertinent to the development of the spin transistor, results within wide stripes in the parameter space spanned by k, a, and B. Finite temperatures smoothen the square-wave profile of the conductance but do not alter its periodic character.

“The mode-deviation effect of trapped spinor bose gas beyond mean field theory”. Xu Y, Jia D-J, Chen Z, Gao Y, Li F-S, International journal of modern physics: B: condensed matter physics, statistical physics, applied physics 18, 1339 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1142/S0217979204024719
Abstract: The deviation effect of spinor mode from the single-mode for a spin-1 Bose gas of trapped atoms is studied beyond the mean field theory. Based on the effective Hamiltonian with nondegenerated level of the collective spin states, the splitting level of the system energy due to the deviation effect has been calculated. For the large condensates of (87)Rb and (23)Na with atom number N > 10(5), the splitting fraction of the energy, arising from the magnetization exhibited by the trapped Bose gas, is found to have a typical order of (10(-4) similar to 10(-8)), decreasing as N(-2) for (87)Rb and increasing as -N(-2) for 23 Na, respectively.

Abstract: The far-infrared dielectric response of superlattices (SL) composed of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) and ferromagnetic La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) has been investigated by ellipsometry. A drastic decrease of the free-carrier response is observed which involves an unusually large length scale of d(crit)approximate to20 nm in YBCO and d(crit)approximate to10 nm in LCMO. A corresponding suppression of metallicity is not observed in SL's where LCMO is replaced by the paramagnetic metal LaNiO3. Our data suggest that either a long-range charge transfer from the YBCO to the LCMO layers or alternatively a strong coupling of the charge carriers to the different and competitive kind of magnetic correlations in the LCMO and YBCO layers is at the heart of the observed metal-insulator transition. The low free-carrier response observed in the far-infrared dielectric response of the magnetic superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8 is possibly related to this effect.

Abstract: An alternative pathway to assemble mesoporous molecular sieve silicas is developed using nonionic alkylamines and N,N-dimethylalkylamines (SO) as structure-directing agents in acidic conditions. The synthesized mesostructures possess wormhole-like frameworks with pore sizes and pore volumes in the range of 20-90 Angstrom and 0.5-1.3 cm(3)/g, respectively. The formation of the mesophase is controlled by a counterion-mediated mechanism of the type (S(0)H(+))(X(-)I(+)), where S(0)H(+) are protonated water molecules that are hydrogen bonded to the lone electron pairs on the amine surfactant headgroups (S(0)H(+)), X(-) is the counteranion originating from the acid, and I(+) are the positively charged (protonated) silicate species. We found that the stronger the ion X(-) is bonded to S(0)H(+), the more it catalyzes the silica condensation into (S(0)H(+))(X(-)I(+)). Br(-) is shown to be a strong binding anion and therefore a fast silica polymerization promoter compared to Cl(-) resulting in the formation of a higher quality mesophase for the Br(-) syntheses. We also showed that the polymerization rate of the silica, dictated by the counterion, controls the morphology of the mesostructures from nonuniform agglomerated blocks in the case of Br(-) syntheses to spherical particles for the Cl(-) syntheses. Next to many benefits such as low temperature, short synthesis time, and the use of inexpensive, nontoxic, and easily extractable amine templates, the developed materials have a remarkable higher thermal and hydrothermal stability compared to hexagonal mesoporous silica, which is also prepared with nonionic amines but formed through the S(0)I(0) mechanism.

“A novel approach to analyse FTIR spectra of precipitates in boron-doped silicon”. de Gryse O, Vanhellemont J, Clauws P, Lebedev O, van Landuyt J, Simoen E, Claeys C, Physica: B : condensed matter

Abstract: Infrared absorption spectra of composite precipitates are analysed with a modified Day-Thorpe algorithm, assuming a precipitated phase consisting of a mixture of two components with known optical properties. Additional constraints are introduced when solving the model equations by using a priori knowledge making the algorithm more reliable. It is shown that this novel approach allows determining both morphology and composition of precipitates. The method is applied to characterise oxide precipitates in boron-doped silicon. The results indicate that for the resistivity range above 60 mOmegacm, the precipitated phase is most probably SiO1.17+/-0.14, while for resistivities below 20 mOmega cm, precipitates consist of a SiO2/B2O3 composite with a large volume fraction of B(2)0(3) (up to 40% for 8 mOmegacm material). Abstract: The dissociation of 60degrees and screw dislocations in diamond is modeled in an approach combining isotropic elasticity theory with ab initio-based tight-binding total-energy calculations. Both dislocations are found to dissociate with a substantial lowering of their line energies. For the 60degrees dislocation, however, an energy barrier to dissociation is found. We investigate the core structure of a screw dislocation distinguishing “shuffle,” “mixed,” and “glide” cores. The latter is found to be the most stable undissociated screw dislocation. Further, the glide motion of 90degrees and 30degrees partials is discussed in terms of a process involving the thermal formation and subsequent migration of kinks along the dislocation line. The calculated activation barriers to dislocation motion show that the 30degrees partial is less mobile than the 90degrees partial. Finally, high-resolution electron microscopy is performed on high-temperature, high-pressure annealed natural brown diamond, allowing the core regions of 60degrees dislocations to be imaged. The majority of dislocations are found to be dissociated. However, in some cases, undissociated 60degrees dislocations were also observed.
