Abstract: We present a study of Cd2+-for-Pb2+ exchange in PbSe nanocrystals (NCs) with cube, star, and rod shapes. Prolonged temperature-activated cation exchange results in PbSe/CdSe heterostructured nanocrystals (HNCs) that preserve their specific overall shape, whereas the PbSe core is strongly faceted with dominance of {111} facets. Hence, cation exchange proceeds while the Se anion lattice is preserved, and well-defined {111}/{111} PbSe/CdSe interfaces develop. Interestingly, by quenching the reaction at different stages of the cation exchange new structures have been isolated, such as coreshell nanorods, CdSe rods that contain one or two separated PbSe dots and fully zinc blende CdSe nanorods. The crystallographically anisotropic cation exchange has been characterized by a combined HRTEM/HAADF-STEM study of heterointerface evolution over reaction time and temperature. Strikingly, Pb and Cd are only intermixed at the PbSe/CdSe interface. We propose a plausible model for the cation exchange based on a layer-by-layer replacement of Pb2+ by Cd2+ enabled by a vacancy-assisted cation migration mechanism.

Abstract: In this letter, we address the bipolar resistive switching phenomenology in scaled TiN\HfO2\Hf cells. By means of stack engineering using a thin Al2O3 layer inserted either at the TiN\HfO2 or at the Hf\HfO2 interface, we demonstrate that the reset operation takes place close to the TiNanode. Due to the increase of the oxygen-vacancy profile from the TiN to the Hf interface, the filament-confining and wide band-gap Al2O3 layer should indeed be engineered at the interface with the TiN electrode in order to further improve the switching control and to allow reaching larger state resistances. Abstract: Starting from the gas phase, small clusters can be produced and deposited with huge flexibility with regard to composition, materials choice and cluster size. Despite many advances in experimental characterization, a detailed morphology of such clusters is still lacking. Here we present an atomic scale observation as well as the dynamical behaviour of ultrasmall germanium clusters. Using quantitative scanning transmission electron microscopy in combination with ab initio calculations, we are able to characterize the transition between different equilibrium geometries of a germanium cluster consisting of less than 25 atoms. Seven-membered rings, trigonal prisms and some smaller subunits are identified as possible building blocks that stabilize the structure.

Abstract: The hydrogen interstitial and the substitutional AlZn, GaZn, and InZn are all shallow donors in ZnO and lead to n-type conductivity. Although shallow donors are expected to repel each other, we show by first-principles calculations that in ZnO these shallow donor impurities attract and form a complex, leading to a donor level deep in the band gap. This puts a limit on the n-type conductivity of (Al,Ga,In)-doped ZnO in the presence of hydrogen.

Abstract: We study the structure and phonon spectrum of a two-dimensional bilayer system of classical charged dipoles oriented perpendicular to the plane of the layers for equal density in each layer. This system can be tuned through six different crystalline phases by changing the interlayer separation or the charge and/or dipole moment of the particle. The presence of the charge on the dipole particles is responsible for the nucleation of five staggered phases and a disordered phase which are not found in the magnetic dipole bilayer system. These extra phases are a consequence of the competition between the repulsive Coulomb and the attractive dipole interlayer interaction. We present the phase diagram and determine the order of the phase transitions. The phonon spectrum of the system was calculated within the harmonic approximation, and a nonmonotonic behavior of the phonon spectrum is found as a function of the effective strength of the interparticle interaction. The stability of the different phases is determined.

Abstract: We study the flux flow state in superconducting materials characterized by rather strong intrinsic pinning, such as Nb, NbN, and nanostructured Al thin films, in which we drag the superconducting dissipative state into the normal state by current biasing. We modify the vortex pinning strength either by ion irradiation, by tuning the measuring temperature or by including artificial pinning centers. We measure critical flux flow voltages for all materials and the same effect is observed: switching to low flux flow dissipations at low fields for an intermediate pinning regime. Abstract: The cyclotron resonance energies, the corresponding oscillator strengths, and the cyclotron absorption spectrum for trilayer graphene are calculated for both ABA and ABC stacking. A gate potential across the stacked layers leads to (1) a reduction of the transition energies, (2) a lifting of the degeneracy of the zero Landau level, and (3) the removal of the electron-hole symmetry.

Abstract: Uniaxial straining experiments were performed on a rolled and annealed Si-alloyed TRIP (transformation-induced plasticity) steel sheet in order to assess the role of its microstructure on the mechanical stability of austenite grains with respect to martensitic transformation. The transformation behavior of individual metastable austenite grains was studied both at the surface and inside the bulk of the material using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) by deforming the samples to different strain levels up to about 20%. A comparison of the XRD and EBSD results revealed that the retained austenite grains at the surface have a stronger tendency to transform than the austenite grains in the bulk of the material. The deformation-induced changes of individual austenite grains before and after straining were monitored with EBSD. Three different types of austenite grains can be distinguished that have different transformation behaviors: austenite grains at the grain boundaries between ferrite grains, twinned austenite grains, and embedded austenite grains that are completely surrounded by a single ferrite grain. It was found that twinned austenite grains and the austenite grains present at the grain boundaries between larger ferrite grains typically transform first, i.e. are less stable, in contrast to austenite grains that are completely embedded in a larger ferrite grain. In the latter case, straining leads to rotations of the harder austenite grain within the softer ferrite matrix before the austenite transforms into martensite. The analysis suggests that austenite grain rotation behavior is also a significant factor contributing to enhancement of the ductility. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: The diffusion of charged particles interacting through a repulsive Yukawa potential, exp(-r/lambda)/r, confined by a parabolic potential in the y direction and subjected to a periodic substrate potential in the x direction is investigated. Langevin dynamic simulations are used to investigate the effect of the particle density, the amplitude of the periodic substrate, and the range of the interparticle interaction potential on the diffusive behavior of the particles. We found that in general the diffusion is suppressed with increasing the amplitude of the periodic potential, but for specific values of the strength of the substrate potential a remarkable increase of the diffusion is found with increasing the periodic potential amplitude. In addition, we found a strong dependence of the diffusion on the specific arrangement of the particles, e. g., single-chain versus multichain configuration. For certain particle configurations, a reentrant behavior of the diffusion is found as a function of the substrate strength due to structural transitions in the ordering of the particles.

Abstract: We performed a molecular dynamics study of vortex-antivortex motion in a superconducting disk with a magnetic dot on top, in the Corbino disk geometry. In this system, vortices and antivortices are forced to move in opposite azimuthal directions by a radially applied current. The dot is magnetized out of plane in order to stabilize composite vortex-antivortex configurations, with vortices closer to the center of the disk and antivortices near to the disk edge. We observe that the interplay between the spatially inhomogeneous current distribution, the screening currents induced by the dipole, and the attractive vortex-antivortex (v-av) interaction result in different dynamical phases. At low current values, antivortices which are distributed at outer rings – remain bounded to vortices at inner rings and the whole configuration rotates rigidly. Above a threshold current, vortices and antivortices unbind and move at different angular velocities in a highly correlated way. Finally, at very strong drive, vortex-antivortex attraction is overhelmed by the external current Lorentz force, causing them to move in opposite directions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The buckling of graphene nano-ribbons containing a grain boundary is studied using atomistic simulations where free and supported boundary conditions are invoked. We consider the buckling transition of two kinds of grain boundaries with special symmetry. When graphene contains a large angle grain boundary with theta = 21.8 degrees, the buckling strains are larger than those of perfect graphene when the ribbons with free (supported) boundary condition are subjected to compressive tension parallel (perpendicular) to the grain boundary. This is opposite for the results of theta = 32.2 degrees. The shape of the deformations of the buckled graphene nanoribbons depends on the boundary conditions, the presence of the particular used grain boundaries, and the direction of applied in-plane compressive tension. Abstract: We have calculated the plasmon modes in graphene double layer structures at finite temperatures, taking into account the inhomogeneity of the dielectric background of the system. The effective dielectric function is obtained from the solution of the Poisson equation of a three-layer dielectric medium with graphene sheets located at the interfaces, separating the different materials. Due to the momentum dispersion of the effective dielectric function, the intra- and interlayer bare Coulomb interactions in the graphene double layer system acquires an additional momentum dependence-an effect that is of the order of the interlayer interaction itself. We show that the energies of the in-phase and out-of-phase plasmon modes are determined largely by different values of the spatially dependent effective dielectric function. The effect of the dielectric inhomogeneity increases with temperature, and even at high temperatures the energy shift induced by the dielectric inhomogeneity and temperature itself remains larger than the broadening of the plasmon energy dispersions due to the Landau damping. The obtained new features of the plasmon dispersions can be observed in frictional drag measurements and in inelastic light scattering and electron energy-loss spectroscopies.

Abstract: The ground-state properties of a paramagnetic Mott insulator at half-filling are investigated in the presence of an external electric field using the inhomogeneous Gutzwiller approximation for a single-band Hubbard model in a slab geometry. We find that the metal-insulator transition is shifted toward higher Hubbard repulsions by applying an electric field perpendicular to the slab. The main reason is the accumulation of charges near the surface. The spatial distribution of site-dependent quasiparticle weight shows that it is maximal in a few layers beneath the surface, while the central sites where the field is screened have a very low quasiparticle weight. Our results show that above a critical-field value, states near the surface will be metallic, while the bulk quasiparticle weight is extremely suppressed but never vanishing, even for large Hubbard repulsions above the bulk zero-field critical value. Below the critical-field value, our results hint toward an insulating state in which the electric field is totally screened and the slab is again at half-filling.

Abstract: The fine structure of the Dirac energy spectrum in graphene induced by electron-optical phonon coupling is investigated in the portion of the spectrum near the phonon emission threshold. The derived new dispersion equation in the immediate neighborhood below the threshold corresponds to an electron-phonon bound state. We find that the singular vertex corrections beyond perturbation theory strongly increase the electron-phonon binding energy scale. The predicted enhancement of the effective electron-phonon coupling can be measured using angle-resolved spectroscopy.
