Abstract: Layered Li(M,Li)O2 (where M is a transition metal) ordered rock-salt-type structures are used in advanced metal-ion batteries as one of the best hosts for the reversible intercalation of Li ions. Besides the conventional redox reaction involving oxidation/reduction of the M cation upon Li extraction/insertion, creating oxygen-located holes because of the partial oxygen oxidation increases capacity while maintaining the oxidized oxygen species in the lattice through high covalency of the M–O bonding. Typical degradation mechanism of the Li(M,Li)O2 electrodes involves partially irreversible M cation migration toward the Li positions, resulting in gradual capacity/voltage fade. Here, using LiRhO2 as a model system (isostructural and isoelectronic to LiCoO2), for the first time, we demonstrate an intimate coupling between the oxygen redox and M cation migration. A formation of the oxidized oxygen species upon electrochemical Li extraction coincides with transformation of the layered Li1–xRhO2 structure into the γ-MnO2-type rutile–ramsdellite intergrowth LiyRh3O6 structure with rutile-like [1 × 1] channels along with bigger ramsdellite-like [2 × 1] tunnels through massive and concerted Rh migration toward the empty positions in the Li layers. The oxidized oxygen dimers with the O–O distances as short as 2.26 Å are stabilized in this structure via the local Rh–O configuration reminiscent to that in the μ-peroxo-μ-hydroxo Rh complexes. The LiyRh3O6 structure is remarkably stable upon electrochemical cycling illustrating that proper structural implementation of the oxidized oxygen species can open a pathway toward deliberate employment of the anion redox chemistry in high-capacity/high-voltage positive electrodes for metal-ion batteries. Upon chemical or electrochemical oxidation, layered LiRhO2 shows a unique structural transformation that involves both cation migration and oxidation of oxygen resulting in a stable tunnel-like rutile−ramsdellite intergrowth LiyRh3O6 structure. This structure demonstrates excellent performance with the steady and reversible capacity of ∼200 mAh/g. The stability of LiyRh3O6 is rooted in the accommodation of partially oxidized oxygen species through the formation of short O−O distances that are compatible with the connectivity of RhO6 octahedra.

Abstract: In order to increase the accuracy of the linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method, we present a new approach where the plane wave basis function is augmented by two different atomic radial components constructed at two different linearization energies corresponding to two different electron bands (or energy windows). We demonstrate that this case can be reduced to the standard treatment within the LAPW paradigm where the usual basis set is enriched by the basis functions of the tight binding type, which go to zero with zero derivative at the sphere boundary. We show that the task is closely related with the problem of extended core states which is currently solved by applying the LAPW method with local orbitals (LAPW+LO). In comparison with LAPW+LO, the number of supplemented basis functions in our approach is doubled, which opens up a new channel for the extension of the LAPW and LAPW+LO basis sets. The appearance of new supplemented basis functions absent in the LAPW+LO treatment is closely related with the existence of the ul-component in the canonical LAPW method. We discuss properties of additional tight binding basis functions and apply the extended basis set for computation of electron energy bands of lanthanum (face and body centered structures) and hexagonal close packed lattice of cadmium. We demonstrate that the new treatment gives lower total energies in comparison with both canonical LAPW and LAPW+LO, with the energy difference more pronounced for intermediate and poor LAPW basis sets.

Abstract: When subjected to the interfacially induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the ground state in thin ferromagnetic films with high perpendicular anisotropy is cycloidal. The period of this cycloidal state depends on the strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In this work, we have studied the effect of confinement on the magnetic ground state and excited states, and we determined the phase diagram of thin strips and thin square platelets by means of micromagnetic calculations. We show that multiple cycloidal states with different periods can be stable in laterally confined films, where the period of the cycloids does not depend solely on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction strength but also on the dimensions of the film. The more complex states comprising skyrmions are also found to be stable, though with higher energy.

Abstract: Conventional junctionless (JL) multi/gate (MuG) field-effect transistors (FETs) require extremely scaled channels to deliver high on-state current with low short-channel effect related leakage. In this letter, using ultra-thin 2D materials (e.g., monolayer MoS2), we present comparison of short-channel effects in JL, and inversion-mode (IM) FETs. We show that JL FETs exhibit better sub-threshold slope (S.S.) and drain-induced-barrier-lowering (DIBL) in comparison to IM FETs due to reduced peak electric field at the junctions. But, threshold voltage (VT) roll-off with channel length downscaling is found to be significantly higher in JL FETs than IM FETs, due to higher source/drain controlled charges (dE/dx) in the channel. Further, we show that although VT roll-off in JL FETs improves by increasing the gate control, i.e., by scaling the oxide, or channel thickness, the sensitivity of threshold voltage on structural parameters is found out to be high. Abstract: Using density-functional theory in combination with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we study the effect of iodide/chloride and iodide/bromide mixing on the electronic transport in lead based organometallic perovskite CH3NH3PbI3, which is known to be an effective tool to tune the electronic and optical properties of such materials. We found that depending on the level and position of the halide mixing, the electronic transport can be increased by more than a factor of 4 for a given voltage biasing. The largest current is observed for small concentration of bromide substitutions located at the equatorial sites. However, full halide substitution has a negative effect on the transport properties of this material: the current drops by an order of magnitude for both CH3NH3PbCl3 and CH3NH3PbBr3 samples. Abstract: The interaction between the surface of a 3D topological insulator and a skyrmion/anti-skyrmion structure is studied in order to investigate the possibility of electron confinement due to the skyrmion presence. Both hedgehog (Neel) and vortex (Bloch) skyrmions are considered. For the hedgehog skyrmion, the in-plane components cannot be disregarded and their interaction with the surface state of the topological insulator (TI) has to be taken into account. A semi-classical description of the skyrmion chiral angle is obtained using the variational principle. It is shown that both the hedgehog and the vortex skyrmion can induce bound states on the surface of the TI. However, the number and the properties of these states depend strongly on the skyrmion type and the skyrmion topological number N-Sk. The probability densities of the bound electrons are also derived where it is shown that they are localized within the skyrmion region. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract: When the charge Z of an atom exceeds the critical value of 170, it will undergo a process called atomic collapse which triggers the spontaneous creation of electron-positron pairs. The high charge requirements have prevented the observation of this phenomenon with real atomic nuclei. However, thanks to the relativistic nature of the carriers in graphene, the same physics is accessible at a much lower scale. The atomic collapse analogue in graphene is realized using artificial nuclei which can be created via the deposition of impurities on the surface of graphene or using charged vacancies. These supercritically charged artificial nuclei trap electrons in a sequence of quasi-bound states which can be observed experimentally as resonances in the local density of states.

Abstract: We develop a theory of the upper critical field in a BCS superconductor with a nonlocal interaction between electrons. We have shown that the nonlocal interaction is characterized by the parameter k(F)rho(0), where k(F) is the Fermi momentum and rho(0) is the radius of electron-electron interaction. The presence of the external magnetic field leads to the generation of additional components of the order parameter with different angular momenta. This effect leads to the enhancement of the upper critical field above the orbital limiting field. In addition the upward curvature in the temperature dependence of H-c2 (T) in the clean limit is predicted. The impurity scattering suppresses the effect in the dirty limit.

Abstract: The conduction electrons in graphene promise new opportunities to access the region of strong many-body electron-electron correlations. Extremely high quality, atomically flat two-dimensional electron sheets and quasi-one-dimensional electron nanoribbons with tuneable band gaps that can be switched on by gates, should exhibit new many-body phenomena that have long been predicted for the regions of phase space where the average Coulomb repulsions between electrons dominate over their Fermi energies. In electron nanoribbons a few nanometres wide etched in monolayers of graphene, the quantum size effects and the van Hove singularities in their density of states further act to enhance electron correlations. For graphene multilayers or nanoribbons in a double unit electron-hole geometry, it is possible for the many-body electron-hole correlations to be made strong enough to stabilise high-temperature electron- hole superfluidity.

Abstract: We present a green, biological production route for silica-titania photocatalysts using diatom microalgae. Diatoms are single-celled, eukaryotic microalgae (2-2000 mu m) that self-assemble soluble silicon (Si(OH)(4)) into intricate silica cell walls, called frustules. These diatom frustules are formed under ambient conditions and consist of hydrated silica with specific 3D morphologies and micro-meso or macroporosity. A remarkable characteristic of diatoms is their ability to bioaccumulate soluble titanium from cell culture medium and incorporate them into their nanostructured silica cell wall. Controlled cultivation of the diatom Pinnularia sp. on soluble titanium in a batch process resulted in the biological immobilisation of titanium dioxide in the porous 3D architecture of the frustules. Six different titanium sources are tested. The silica-titania frustules were isolated by treating the harvested Pinnularia cells with nitric acid (65%) or by high temperature treatment. Thermal annealing converted the amorphous titania into crystalline titania. The produced silica-titania material is evaluated towards photocatalytic activity for acetaldehyde (C2H4O) abatement. Frustules cultivated with TiBaldH showed the highest photocatalytic performance. Comparison of the photocatalytic activity with P25 reveals that P25 has a 4 fold higher photocatalytic activity, but when photocatalytic activity is normalized for titania content, the frustules show double activity. Further material characterization (morphology, crystallinity, surface area and elemental distribution) of the TiBaldH silica-titania frustules provides additional insight into their structure-activity relationship. These natural biosilicatitania materials have excellent properties for photocatalytic purposes, including high surface area (108 m(2) g(-1)) and good porosity, and show reliable immobilization of TiO2 in the ordered structure of the diatom frustule.

Abstract: Environmental factors, such as light, humidity and temperature are triggering agents for the alteration of organic and/or inorganic constituents of oil paintings. The oxidation of the organic material is favored by increasing of relative humidity and temperature, whereas processes involving changes of the oxidation states of a number of inorganic pigments (e.g., vermilion, cadmium yellows, zinc yellows, chrome yellows) are mainly activated by light-exposure. In view of the optimization of the long-term conservation and restoration strategies of paintings it is of relevant interest to establish the consequences of thermal parameters (temperature and relative humidity) on the chemical/photochemical-reactivity and the nature of the alteration products of light sensitive-pigments in oil medium. To this aim here we propose a multi-method analytical approach based on the combination of diffuse reflectance UV-Vis, FTIR, synchrotron radiation (SR)-based micro X-ray fluorescence (mu-XRF)/micro-X-ray absorption neat edge structure ()CANES) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies for studying the effects of different relative humidity conditions before and after light exposure on the reactivity of a series of lead chromate-based pigments [such as PbCrO4 center dot PbO (monoclinic), PbCrO4 (monoclinic) and PbCr0.2S0.8O4 (orthorhombic)] in an oil medium. The investigation of paint models was also compared to that of a late 19th century historical orthorhombic PbCr0.4S0.6O4 oil paint. Diffuse reflectance UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopies were used to obtain information associated with chromatic changes and the formation of organo-metal degradation products at the paint surface. SR-based Cr K-edge mu-XANES/mu-XRF mapping analysis and EPR spectroscopy were employed in a complementary fashion to determine the amount, nature and distribution of Cr(III) and Cr(V)-based alteration compounds within the paints with micrometric spatial resolution. Under the employed thermal aging conditions, lead(II)-carboxylates and reduced Cr-compounds (in abundance of up to about 35% at the surface) have been identified in the lead chromate-based paints. The tendency of chromates to become reduced increased with increasing moisture levels and was favored for the orthorhombic PbCr0.2S0.8O4 compounds. The redox process gave rise to the formation of Cr(V)-species in relative amount much higher than that was formed in the equivalent paint which was exposed only to light. After light-exposure of the thermally aged paints, compounds ascribable to the oxidation of the organic binder were detected for all the types of pigments. Nevertheless, the previous thermal treatment increased the tendency toward photo-reduction of only the PbCr0.2S0.8O4 pigment. For this light-sensitive compound, the thickness variation of the reduced Cr-rich (ca. 70%) photo-alteration layer with moisture levels could be ascribed to a surface passivation phenomenon that had already occurred before photochemical aging. Abstract: Macro X-ray fluorescence scanning (MA-XRF) is gradually becoming an established technique for the non-invasive analytical investigation of painted surfaces. This paper discusses some of the benefits and limitations of employing MA-XRF for the study of manuscript illuminations. Art historical research on this type of artefacts that is based on scientific measurements is often limited by the fact that usually no sampling can take place. Hence there is a need for non-invasive analytical tools that make it possible to conduct systematic investigations. As a representative example of this type of objects, a 15th century Italian manuscript fragment from the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (UK) is investigated. The aims of the study were to gain insight into the materials and techniques employed by Renaissance illuminators and to help answer specific questions regarding the fragment's authorship and geographic origin. The complementarity and advantages of MA-XRF mapping versus site-specific analyses are discussed. For this purpose, MA-XRF data are evaluated and compared with the results of other analytical techniques. Abstract: Understanding how painted works of art were constructed, layer-by-layer, requires a range of macroscopic and microscopic X-ray and infrared-based analytical methods. Deconstructing complex assemblies of paints horizontally across a picture and vertically through it provides insight into the detailed production process of the art work and on the painting techniques and styles of its maker. The unwanted chemical transformations that some paint pigments undergo are also detectable; these changes can alter the paint's optical properties. Understanding the chemistry behind such paint degradation gives conservators vital clues to counter these effects and is an invaluable asset in protecting these cultural artefacts for future generations.
