Abstract: Recently, a two-dimensional (2D) MoSi 2N 4 (MSN) structure has been successfully synthesized [Hong et al., Science 369(6504), 670-674 (2020)]. Motivated by this result, we investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of MSN monolayer (MSN-1L) and bilayer (MSN-2L) under the applied electric field (E-field) and strain using density functional theory calculations. We find that the MSN-2L is a semiconductor with an indirect bandgap of 1.60 (1.80)eV using Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (HSE06). The bandgap of MSN-2L decreases as the E-field increases from 0.1 to 0.6V/angstrom and for larger E-field up to 1.0V/angstrom the bilayer becomes metallic. As the vertical strain increases, the bandgap decreases; more interestingly, a semiconductor to a metal phase transition is observed at a strain of 12 %. Furthermore, the optical response of the MSN-2L is in the ultraviolet (UV) region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The absorption edge exhibits a blue shift by applying an E-field or a vertical compressive strain. The obtained interesting properties suggest MSN-2L as a promising material in electro-mechanical and UV opto-mechanical devices.

Abstract: We present here a new interatomic potential parameter set to predict the thermal conductivity of zirconium trisulfide monolayers. The generated Tersoff-type force field is parameterized using data collected with first-principles calculations. We use non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to predict the thermal conductivity. The generated parameters result in very good agreement in structural, mechanical, and dynamical parameters. The room temperature lattice thermal conductivity ( kappa) of the considered crystal is predicted to be kappa x x = 25.69Wm – 1K – 1 and kappa y y = 42.38Wm – 1K – 1, which both agree well with their corresponding first-principles values with a discrepancy of less than 5%. Moreover, the calculated kappa variation with temperature (200 and 400 K) are comparable within the framework of the accuracy of both first-principles and molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract: Transition metal (TM) doped two-dimensional single-atom catalysts are known as a promising class of catalysts for electrocatalytic gas conversion. However, the detailed mechanisms that occur at the surface of these catalysts are still unknown. In the present work, we simulate three Mo-doped nitrogenated graphene structures. In each catalyst, the position of the Mo active site and the corresponding local carbon topologies are different, i.e. MoN4C10 with in-plane Mo atom, MoN4C8 in which Mo atom bridges two adjacent armchair-like graphitic edges, and MoN2C3 in which Mo is doped at the edge of the graphene sheet. Using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations we discuss the electrocatalytic activity of Mosingle bondNsingle bondC structures for nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) with a focus on unraveling the corresponding mechanisms concerning different Mo site positions and C topologies. Our results indicate that the position of the active site centers has a great effect on its electrocatalytic behavior. The gas phase N2 efficiently reduces to ammonia on MoN4C8 via the distal mechanism with an onset potential of −0.51 V. We confirm that the proposed pyridinic structure, MoN4C8, can catalyze NRR effectively with a low overpotential of 0.35 V.

Abstract: In the present work two different cold working and annealing schemes were utilized, and the asymmetric superelastic response of thermomechanically processed materials were then assessed through cyclic tensile and compressive modes of deformation. The values of transformation stress, transformation strain, and pseudoelastic strain were measured for each treated and solutionized specimens and the asymmetric response was compared. In the solution annealed state, the difference of these parameters at different deformation modes was negligible due to the weak texture of the material, while for thermomechanically treated ones, development of specific deformation and recrystallization texture components was identified to be one of the underlying reasons of intensified asymmetry. The evolved substructure during the thermomechanical processing also played a substantial role in determining the asymmetric response. The presence of fine grains and dense dislocation substructure could hinder the movement of the transformation front, thus limiting the range of transformation. In tensile mode, the transformation stress was lower, but higher transformation strain was achieved, which was discussed relying on the slip activity in specified oriented grains. The lower transformation strain in compression mode led to lower pseudoelastic strain due to the narrow transformation range which finally degraded superelastic response of the material. Abstract: A wave-packet time evolution method, based on the split-operator technique, is developed to investigate the scattering of quasiparticles at a normal-superconductor interface of arbitrary profile and shape. As a practical application, we consider a system where low-energy electrons can be described as Dirac particles, which is the case for most two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides. However, the method is easily adapted for other cases such as electrons in few-layer black phosphorus or any Schrodinger quasiparticles within the effective mass approximation in semiconductors. We employ the method to revisit Andreev reflection in mono-, bi-, and trilayer graphene, where specular-and retro-reflection cases are observed for electrons scattered by a steplike superconducting region. The effect of opening a zero-gap channel across the superconducting region on the electron and hole scattering is also addressed, as an example of the versatility of the technique proposed here.

Abstract: Recent experimental measurements of light absorption in few-layer black phosphorus (BP) revealed a series of high and sharp peaks, interspersed by pairs of lower and broader features. Here, we propose a theoretical model for these excitonic states in few-layer BP within a continuum approach for the in-plane degrees of freedom and a tight-binding approximation that accounts for interlayer couplings. This yields excitonic transitions between different combinations of the subbands created by the coupled BP layers, which leads to a series of high and low oscillator strength excitonic states, consistent with the experimentally observed bright and dark exciton peaks, respectively. The main characteristics of such subband exciton states, as well as the possibility to control their energies and oscillator strengths via applied electric and magnetic fields, are discussed, towards a full understanding of the excitonic spectrum of few-layer BP and its tunability.

Abstract: A soil history of exposure to extreme weather may impact future plant growth and microbial community assembly. Currently, little is known about whether and how previous precipitation regime (PR)-induced changes in soil microbial communities influence plant and soil microbial community responses to a subsequent PR. We exposed grassland mesocosms to either an ambient PR (1 day wet-dry alternation) or a persistent PR (30 days consecutive wet-dry alternation) for one year. This conditioned soil was then inoculated as a 10 % fraction into 90 % sterilized “native” soil, after which new plant communities were established and subjected to either the ambient or persistent PR for 60 days. We assessed whether past persistent weather-induced changes in soil microbial community composition affect soil microbial and plant community responses to subsequent weather persistence. The historical regimes caused enduring effects on fungal communities and only temporary effects on bacterial communities, but did not trigger soil microbial legacy effects on plant productivity when exposed to either current PR. This study provides experimental evidence for soil legacy of climate persistence on grassland ecosystems in response to subsequent climate persistence, helping to understand and predict the influences of future climate change on soil biota.

Abstract: Selective suppression of nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB) over aerobic and anoxic ammonium-oxidising bacteria (AerAOB and AnAOB) remains a major challenge for mainstream partial nitritation/anammox implementation, a resource-efficient nitrogen removal pathway. A unique multi-stressor floc treatment was therefore designed and validated for the first time under lab-scale conditions while staying true to full-scale design principles. Two hybrid (suspended + biofilm growth) reactors were operated continuously at 20.2 ± 0.6 °C. Recurrent multi-stressor floc treatments were applied, consisting of a sulphide-spiked deoxygenated starvation followed by a free ammonia shock. A good microbial activity balance with high AnAOB (71 ± 21 mg N L−1 d−1) and low NOB (4 ± 17 % of AerAOB) activity was achieved by combining multiple operational strategies: recurrent multi-stressor floc treatments, hybrid sludge (flocs & biofilm), short floc age control, intermittent aeration, and residual ammonium control. The multi-stressor treatment was shown to be the most important control tool and should be continuously applied to maintain this balance. Excessive NOB growth on the biofilm was avoided despite only treating the flocs to safeguard the AnAOB activity on the biofilm. Additionally, no signs of NOB adaptation were observed over 142 days. Elevated effluent ammonium concentrations (25 ± 6 mg N L−1) limited the TN removal efficiency to 39 ± 9 %, complicating a future full-scale implementation. Operating at higher sludge concentrations or reducing the volumetric loading rate could overcome this issue. The obtained results ease the implementation of mainstream PN/A by providing and additional control tool to steer the microbial activity with the multi-stressor treatment, thus advancing the concept of energy neutrality in sewage treatment plants.

Abstract: Using atomistic magnetic simulations we investigate the soliton motion along a pinned skyrmion chain containing an interstitial skyrmion. We find that the soliton can exhibit stable motion along the chain without a skyrmion Hall effect for an extended range of drives. Under a constant drive the solitons have a constant velocity. We also measure the skyrmion velocity-current curves and identify the signatures of different phases including a pinned phase, stable soliton motion, and quasi-free motion at higher drives where all of the skyrmions depin from the pinning centers and move along the rigid wall. In the quasi-free motion regime, the velocity is oscillatory due to the motion of the skyrmions over the pinning sites. For increasing pinning strength, the onset of soliton motion shifts to higher values of current density. We also find that for stronger pinning, the characteristic velocity-current shape is affected by the annihilation of single or multiple skyrmions in the drive interval over which the soliton motion occurs. Our results indicate that stable skyrmion soliton motion is possible and that the solitons could be used as information carriers instead of the skyrmions themselves for technological applications.

Abstract: We calculate bubble nucleation rates in a Lennard-Jones fluid through explicit molecular dynamics simulations. Our approach-based on a recent free energy method (dubbed reweighted Jarzynski sampling), transition state theory, and a simple recrossing correction-allows us to probe a fairly wide range of rates in several superheated and cavitation regimes in a consistent manner. Rate predictions from this approach bridge disparate independent literature studies on the same model system. As such, we find that rate predictions based on classical nucleation theory, direct brute force molecular dynamics simulations, and seeding are consistent with our approach and one another. Published rates derived from forward flux sampling simulations are, however, found to be outliers. This study serves two purposes: First, we validate the reliability of common modeling techniques and extrapolation approaches on a paradigmatic problem in materials science and chemical physics. Second, we further test our highly generic recipe for rate calculations, and establish its applicability to nucleation processes.

Abstract: X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopic analyses showed a natural galena (PbS) crystal from Freiberg in Saxony (Germany) to be a single phase specimen [rock salt (NaCl) structure type, space group Fm3m, a = 5.932(1) angstrom] with stoichiometric composition and an enhanced dislocation density (8 approximate to 1011 cm-2). The latter parameter leads to an increase of the electrical resistivity in the high-temperature regime, as well as to the appearance of phonon resonance with a characteristic frequency coPR = 3.8(1) THz. Being in the same range (i.e., 3-5.5 THz) with the sulfur optical modes of highest group velocities, it results in a drastic reduction (by similar to 75%) of thermal conductivity (K) at lower temperatures (i.e., < 100 K), as well as in the appearance of a characteristic minimum in K at T approximate to 30 K. Furthermore, the studied galena is characterized by phonon-drag behavior and by temperature dependent switch of the charge carrier scattering mechanism regime (i.e., scattering on dislocations for T < 100 K, on acoustic phonons for 100 K < T < 170 K and on both acoustic and optical phonons for 170 K < T < 300 K). The combined theoretical calculation and optical spectroscopic study confirm this mineral to be a direct gap degenerate semiconductor. The possible origins of the second-order Raman spectrum are discussed.

Abstract: We present a detailed theoretical investigation on the electronic transport properties of n-type monolayer (ML) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) at low temperature in the presence of proximity-induced interactions such as Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) and the exchange interaction. The electronic band structure is calculated by solving the Schr & ouml;dinger equation with a k <middle dot> p Hamiltonian, and the electric screening induced by electron-electron interaction is evaluated under a standard random phase approximation approach. In particular, the longitudinal and transverse or Hall mobilities are calculated by using a momentum-balance equation derived from a semiclassical Boltzmann equation, where the electron-impurity interaction is considered as the principal scattering center at low temperature. The obtained results show that the RSOC can induce the in-plane spin components for spin-split subbands in different valleys, while the exchange interaction can lift the energy degeneracy for electrons in different valleys. The opposite signs of Berry curvatures in the two valleys would introduce opposite directions of Lorentz force on valley electrons. As a result, the transverse currents from nondegenerate valleys can no longer be canceled out so that the transverse current or Hall mobility can be observed. Interestingly, we find that at a fixed effective Zeeman field, the lowest spin-split conduction subband in ML-TMDs can be tuned from one in the K'-valley to one in the K-valley by varying the Rashba parameter. The occupation of electrons in different valleys also varies with changing carrier density. Therefore, we can change the magnitude and direction of the Hall current by varying the Rashba parameter, effective Zeeman field, and carrier density by, e.g., the presence of a ferromagnetic substrate and/or applying a gate voltage. By taking the ML-MoS2 as an example, these effects are demonstrated and examined. The important and interesting theoretical findings can be beneficial to experimental observation of the valleytronic effect and to gaining an in-depth understanding of the ML-TMD systems in the presence of proximity-induced interactions.

Abstract: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are exciting materials due to their extensive applicability in a multitude of modern technological fields. Their most prominent characteristic and primary origin of their widespread success is the exceptional variety of their structures, which we termed 'reticular diversity'. Naturally, the ever-emerging applications of MOFs made it increasingly common that researchers from various areas delve into reticular chemistry to overcome their scientific challenges. This confers a crucial role to comprehensive overviews capable of providing newcomers with the knowledge of the state of the art, as well as with the key physics and chemistry considerations needed to design MOFs for a specific application. In this review, we commit to this purpose by outlining the fundamental understanding needed to carefully navigate MOFs' reticular diversity in their main fields of application, namely hostguest chemistry, chemical sensing, electronics, photophysics, and catalysis. Such knowledge and a meticulous, open-minded approach to the design of MOFs paves the way for their most innovative and successful applications, and for the global advancement of the research areas they are employed in. Abstract: In this study, the structural, electronic and optical properties of theoretically predicted C6N monolayer structure are investigated by means of Density Functional Theory-based First-Principles Calculations. Phonon band dispersion calculations and molecular dynamics simulations reveal the dynamical and thermal stability of the C6N single-layer structure. We found out that the C6N monolayer has large negative in-plane Poisson's ratios along both X and Y direction and the both values are almost four times that of the famous-pentagraphene. The electronic structure shows that C6N monolayer is a semi-metal and has a Dirac-point in the BZ. The optical analysis using the random phase approximation method constructed over HSE06 illustrates that the first peak of absorption coefficient of the C6N monolayer along all polarizations is located in the IR range of spectrum, while the second absorption peak occurs in the visible range, which suggests its potential applications in optical and electronic devices. Interestingly, optically anisotropic character of this system is highly desirable for the design of polarization-sensitive photodetectors. Thermoelectric properties such as Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, electronic thermal conductivity and power factor are investigated as a function of carrier doping at temperatures 300, 400, and 500 K. In general, we predict that the C6N monolayer could be a new platform for study of novel physical properties in two-dimensional semi-metal materials, which may provide new opportunities to realize high-speed low-dissipation devices.

Abstract: Efficient thermal transport control is a fundamental issue for electronic device applications such as information, communication, and energy storage technologies in modern electronics in order to achieve desired thermal conditions. Structural defects in materials provide a mechanism to adjust the thermal transport properties of these materials on demand. In this context, the effect of structural defects on lattice thermal conductivities of two-dimensional hexagonal binary group-III nitride (XN, X = B, Al, and Ga) semiconductors is systematically investigated by means of classical molecular dynamics simulations performed with recently developed transferable inter-atomic potentials accurately describing defect energies. Here, two different Green-Kubo based approaches and another approach based on non-equilibrium molecular dynamics are compared in order to get an overall understanding. Our investigation clearly shows that defect concentrations of 3% decrease the thermal conductivity of systems containing these nitrites up to 95%. Results hint that structural defects can be used as effective adjustment parameters in controlling thermal transport properties in device applications associated with these materials.
