“Preparing polymer films doped with magnetic nanoparticles by spin-coating and melt-processing can induce an in-plane magnetic anisotropy”. Wouters J, Lebedev OI, Van Tendeloo G, Yamada H, Sato N, Vanacken J, Moshchalkov VV, Verbiest T, Valev VK, Journal of applied physics 109, 076105 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.3572048
Abstract: Faraday rotation has been used to investigate a series of polymer films doped with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. The films have been prepared by spin-coating and melt-processing. In each case, upon varying the angle of optical incidence on the films, an in-plane magnetic anisotropy is observed. The effect of such an anisotropy on the Faraday rotation as a function of the angle of optical incidence is verified by comparison with magnetically poled films. These results demonstrate that care should be taken upon analyzing the magnetic behavior of such films on account of the sample preparation techniques themselves being able to affect the magnetization.

“Electrical control of the chemical bonding of fluorine on graphene”. Sofo JO, Suarez AM, Usaj G, Cornaglia PS, Hernández-Nieves AD, Balseiro CA, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 83, 081411 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.83.081411
Abstract: We study the electronic structure of diluted F atoms chemisorbed on graphene using density functional theory calculations. We show that the nature of the chemical bonding of a F atom adsorbed on top of a C atom in graphene strongly depends on carrier doping. In neutral samples the F impurities induce a sp(3)-like bonding of the C atom below, generating a local distortion of the hexagonal lattice. As the graphene is electron-doped, the C atom retracts back to the graphene plane and for high doping (10(14) cm(-2)) its electronic structure corresponds to a nearly pure sp(2) configuration. We interpret this sp(3)-sp(2) doping-induced crossover in terms of a simple tight-binding model and discuss the physical consequences of this change.

“Role of carbon and nitrogen in Fe2C and Fe2N from first-principles calculations”. Fang CM, van Huis MA, Jansen J, Zandbergen HW, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 84, 094102 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.84.094102
Abstract: Although Fe2C and Fe2N are technologically important materials, the exact nature of the chemical bonding of C and N atoms and the related impact on the electronic properties are at present unclear. Here, results of first-principles electronic structure calculations for Fe2X (X = C, N) phases are presented. The electronic structure calculations show that the roles of N and C in iron nitrides and carbides are comparable, and that the X-X interactions have significant impact on electronic properties. Accurate analysis of the spatially resolved differences in electron densities reveals a subtle distinction between the chemical bonding and charge transfer of N and C ions.

“Yukawa particles confined in a channel and subject to a periodic potential : ground state and normal modes”. Carvalho JCN, Ferreira WP, Farias GA, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 83, 094109 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.83.094109
Abstract: We consider a classical system of two-dimensional (2D) charged particles, interacting through a repulsive Yukawa potential exp(-r/λ)/r, and confined in a parabolic channel that limits the motion of the particles in the y direction. Along the x direction, the particles are subject to a periodic potential. The ground-state configurations and the normal-mode spectra of the system are obtained as a function of the periodicity and strength of the periodic potential (V0) and density. An interesting set of tunable ground-state configurations are found, with first- or second-order structural transitions between them. A configuration with particles aligned, perpendicular to the x direction, in each minimum of the periodic potential is obtained for V0 larger than some critical value that has a power-law dependence on the density. The phonon spectrum of different configurations was also calculated. A localization of the modes into a small frequency interval is observed for sufficiently large strength of the periodic potential, and a tunable gap in the phonon spectrum is found as a function of V0.

“Origin of the hysteresis of the current voltage characteristics of superconducting microbridges near the critical temperature”. Vodolazov DY, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 84, 094511 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.84.094511
Abstract: The current voltage (IV) characteristics of short [with length L less than or similar to xi(T)] and long [L >> xi(T)] microbridges are theoretically investigated near the critical temperature of the superconductor. Calculations are made in the nonlocal (local) limit when the inelastic relaxation length due to electron-phonon interactions L(in) = (D tau(in))(1/2) is larger (smaller) than the temperature-dependent coherence length xi(T) (D is the diffusion coefficient, tau(in) is the inelastic relaxation time of the quasiparticle distribution function). We find that, in both limits, the origin of the hysteresis in the IV characteristics is mainly connected with the large time scale over which the magnitude of the order parameter varies in comparison with the time-scale variation of the superconducting phase difference across the microbridge in the resistive state. In the nonlocal limit, the time-averaged heating and cooling of quasiparticles are found in different areas of the microbridge, which are driven, respectively, by oscillations of the order parameter and the electric field. We show that, by introducing an additional term in the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation, it is possible to take into account the cooling effect in the local limit too.

Abstract: Using the mass-spectrometric method we studied the effect of light gas inclusions on the formation process of multi-component laser-induced plasma ions. Masscharge characteristics, as well as energy and spatial distribution of the plasma ions are analysed. We found that both the energy and maximal charge of heavy component ions decrease due to the presence of gas atoms in the solid target surface layer.

Abstract: We derive dispersion relations for a system of identical particles confined in a two-dimensional annular harmonic well and which interact through a Yukawa potential, e.g., a dusty plasma ring. When the particles are in a single chain (i.e., a one-dimensional ring), we find a longitudinal acoustic mode and a transverse optical mode which show approximate agreement with the dispersion relation for a straight configuration for large radii of the ring. When the radius decreases, the dispersion relations modify: there appears an anticrossing of the modes near the crossing point resulting in a frequency gap between the lower and upper branches of the modified dispersion relations. For the double chain (i.e., a two-dimensional zigzag configuration), the dispersion relation has four branches: longitudinal acoustic and optical and transverse acoustic and optical.

“Vortex states in layered mesoscopic superconductors”. Liu C-Y, Berdiyorov GR, Milošević, MV, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 83, 104524 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.83.104524
Abstract: Within the Ginzburg-Landau theory, we study the vortex structures in three-dimensional anisotropic mesoscopic superconductors in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Anisotropy is included through varied Tc in different layers of the sample and leads to distinct differences in the vortex states and their free energy. Several unconventional states are found, some comprising vortex clusters or exhibiting asymmetry. In a tilted magnetic field, we found second-order transitions between different vortex states, although vortex entry is generally a first-order transition in mesoscopic samples. In multilayered samples the kinked vortex strings are formed owing to the competing interactions of vortices with Meissner currents and the weak-link boundaries. The length and deformation of vortex fragments are determined solely by the inclination and strength of applied magnetic field, and this lock-in does not depend on the degree of anisotropy between the superconducting layers.

Abstract: Using a combination of high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomically resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy in an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope we demonstrate the possibility of 2D atom by atom valence mapping in the mixed valence compound Mn3O4. The Mn L2,3 energy-loss near-edge structures from Mn2+ and Mn3+ cation sites are similar to those of MnO and Mn2O3 references. Comparison with simulations shows that even though a local interpretation is valid here, intermixing of the inelastic signal plays a significant role. This type of experiment should be applicable to challenging topics in materials science, such as the investigation of charge ordering or single atom column oxidation states in, e.g., dislocations.

“D- shallow donor near a semiconductor-metal and a semiconductor-dielectric interface”. Hao YL, Djotyan AP, Avetisyan AA, Peeters FM, Journal of physics : condensed matter 23, 115303 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1088/0953-8984/23/11/115303
Abstract: The ground state energy and the extent of the wavefunction of a negatively charged donor (D − ) located near a semiconductormetal or a semiconductordielectric interface are obtained. We apply the effective mass approximation and use a variational two-electron wavefunction that takes into account the influence of all image charges that arise due to the presence of the interface, as well as the correlation between the two electrons bound to the donor. For a semiconductormetal interface, the D − binding energy is enhanced for donor positions d > 1.5aB (aB is the effective Bohr radius) due to the additional attraction of the electrons with their images. When the donor approaches the interface (i.e. d < 1.5aB) the D − binding energy drops and eventually it becomes unbound. For a semiconductordielectric (or a semiconductorvacuum) interface the D − binding energy is reduced for any donor position as compared to the bulk case and the system becomes rapidly unbound when the donor approaches the interface.

Abstract: Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) controlled band structure of a two-dimensional superlattice allows for the modulation of the conductance of finite size devices by changing the strength of the SOI. We consider rectangular arrays and find that the temperature dependence of the conductance disappears for high temperatures, but the strength of the SOI still affects the conductance at these temperatures. The modulation effect can be seen even in the presence of strong dephasing, which can be important for practical applications.

“Phonon dispersions and piezoelectricity in bulk and multilayers of hexagonal boron nitride”. Michel KH, Verberck B, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 83, 115328 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.83.115328
Abstract: A unified theory of phonon dispersions and piezoelectricity in bulk and multilayers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is derived. The dynamical matrix is calculated on the basis of an empirical force constant model of intralayer valence and interlayer van der Waals interactions. Coulomb interactions are calculated by Ewalds method, adapted for the three-dimensional (3D) and the multilayer case. The deformation of the ionic charge distribution with long-wave lattice displacements is taken into account. Special attention is devoted to the nonanalytic long-range Coulomb contribution to the dynamical matrix which is different for the 3D crystal and the multilayer case. Consequently there is a splitting of the transverse optical (TO) and longitudinal optical (LO) phonon branches of E1u symmetry and a discontinuity of the A2u branch at the Γ point in 3D h-BN. No such splitting and discontinuity at Γ are present in multilayer crystals with a finite number N of layers. There a diverging bundle of N overbending optical phonon branches emerges from Γ. Borns long-wave theory is applied and extended for the study of piezoelectricity in layered crystals. While 3D h-BN and h-BN multilayers with an even number of layers (symmetry D6h) are not piezoelectric, multilayers with an uneven number of Nu layers (symmetry D3h) are piezoelectric; the piezoelectric coefficient e1,11 is inversely proportional to Nu.

Abstract: A computational method is presented for angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) and photoelectron diffraction (PED) in the ultraviolet regime. The one-step model is employed and both initial valence and final continuum states are calculated using the finite-cluster, real-space multiple scattering method. Thereby the approach is versatile and provides a natural link to core-level PED. The method is applied to the Cu(111) valence band and good agreement with experiment is found for both ARPES spectra and PED patterns. When the PED patterns are integrated over a filled band of a single-orbital symmetry, such as Cu-3d, we show, both numerically and analytically, that the exact theory with delocalized initial states can be replaced by the much simpler, core-level-type theory where the initial states are taken as localized.

Abstract: By applying an electric field perpendicular to a semiconductor quantum ring we show that it is possible to modify the single particle wave function between quantum dot (QD)-like and ring-like. The constraints on the geometrical parameters of the quantum ring to realize such a transition are derived. With such a perpendicular electric field we are able to tune the Aharanov-Bohm (AB) effect for both the single particle and for excitons. The tunability is in both the strength of the AB effect as well as in its periodicity. We also investigate the strain induce potential inside the self-assembled quantum ring and the effect of the strain on the AB effect.

Abstract: The technique of beam optics is applied to the description of the wave function of Dirac electrons. This approach is illustrated by considering electron transmission through simple nonhomogeneous structures, such as flat and bent p-n junctions and superlattices. We found that a convex p-n junction compresses the beam waist, while a concave interface widens it without loosing its focusing properties. At a flat p-n junction the waist of the transmitted Gaussian beam can be narrowed or widened, depending on the angle of incidence. A general condition is derived for the occurrence of beam collimation in a superlattice which is less stringent than previous discussed.

“Generalized phonon-assisted Zener tunneling in indirect semiconductors with non-uniform electric fields : a rigorous approach”. Vandenberghe W, Sorée B, Magnus W, Fischetti MV, Journal of applied physics 109, 124503 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.3595672
Abstract: A general framework to calculate the Zener current in an indirect semiconductor with an externally applied potential is provided. Assuming a parabolic valence and conduction band dispersion, the semiconductor is in equilibrium in the presence of the external field as long as the electron-phonon interaction is absent. The linear response to the electron-phonon interaction results in a non-equilibrium system. The Zener tunneling current is calculated from the number of electrons making the transition from valence to conduction band per unit time. A convenient expression based on the single particle spectral functions is provided, enabling the evaluation of the Zener tunneling current under any three-dimensional potential profile. For a one-dimensional potential profile an analytical expression is obtained for the current in a bulk semiconductor, a semiconductor under uniform field, and a semiconductor under a non-uniform field using the WKB (Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin) approximation. The obtained results agree with the Kane result in the low field limit. A numerical example for abrupt p-n diodes with different doping concentrations is given, from which it can be seen that the uniform field model is a better approximation than the WKB model, but a direct numerical treatment is required for low bias conditions.

“Excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect : unstrained versus strained type-I semiconductor nanorings”. Tadić, M, Čukarić, N, Arsoski V, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 84, 125307 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.84.125307
Abstract: We study how mechanical strain affects the magnetic field dependence of the exciton states in type-I semiconductor nanorings. Strain spatially separates the electron and hole in (In,Ga)As/GaAs nanorings which is beneficial for the occurrence of the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect. In narrow strained (In,Ga)As/GaAs nanorings the AB oscillations in the exciton ground-state energy are due to anticrossings with the first excited state. No such AB oscillations are found in unstrained GaAs/(Al,Ga)As nanorings irrespective of the ring width. Our results are obtained within an exact numerical diagonalization scheme and are shown to be accurately described by a two-level model with off-diagonal coupling t. The later transfer integral expresses the Coulomb coupling between states of electron-hole pairs. We also found that the oscillator strength for exciton recombination in (In,Ga)As/GaAs nanorings exhibits AB oscillations, which are superimposed on a linear increase with magnetic field. Our results agree qualitatively with recent experiments on the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect in type-I (In,Ga)As/GaAs nanorings.

Abstract: The structure and interface characteristics of (LaVO3)6m(SrVO3)m superlattices deposited on a (100)-SrTiO3 substrate were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cross-section TEM studies revealed that both LaVO3 (LVO) and SrVO3 (SVO) layers are good single-crystal quality and epitaxially grown with respect to the substrate. It is evidenced that LVO layers are made of two orientational variants of a distorted perovskite compatible with bulk LaVO3, while SVO layers suffers from a tetragonal distortion due to the substrate-induced stain. Electron energy loss spectroscopy investigations indicate changes in the fine structure of the V L23 edge, related to a valence change between the LaVO3 and the SrVO3 layers.

Abstract: At the interface of electrostatic potential kink profiles, one-dimensional chiral states are found in bilayer graphene (BLG). Such structures can be created by applying an asymmetric potential to the upper and the lower layers of BLG. We found the following: (i) due to the strong confinement by the single kink profile, the unidirectional states are only weakly affected by a magnetic field; (ii) increasing the smoothness of the kink potential results in additional bound states, which are topologically different from those chiral states; and (iii) in the presence of a kink-antikink potential, the overlap between the oppositely moving chiral states results in the appearance of crossing and anticrossing points in the energy spectrum. This leads to the opening of tunable minigaps in the spectrum of the unidirectional topological states.

Abstract: A magnetron discharge is characterized by drifts of the charged particles guiding center, caused by the magnetic field, in contrast to unmagnetized discharges. Because of these drifts, a pronounced asymmetry of the discharge can be observed in a dual magnetron setup. In this work, it is found that the shape of the discharge in a dual magnetron configuration depends on the magnetic field configuration. In a closed configuration, strong drifts were observed in one preferential direction, whereas in a mirror configuration the deflection of the discharge was not so pronounced. Our calculations confirm experimental observations.

Abstract: A first-principles modeling approach is used to investigate the vibrational properties of HfO2. The calculated phonon density of states is compared to experimental results obtained from inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) of various metal-oxide-semiconductor devices with HfO2 gate stacks. This comparison provides deep insights into the nature of the signatures of the complicated IETS spectra and provides valuable structural information about the gate stack, such as the possible presence of oxygen vacancies in jet-vapour deposited HfO2. Important structural differences between the interface of atomic-layer or molecular-beam deposited HfO2 and the Si substrate are also revealed.

Abstract: We investigated the magnetic flux dependence of the supercurrent in mesoscopic d-wave superconducting loops, containing impurities and surface defects, by numerically solving the Bogoliubovde Gennes equations self-consistently. In the presence of impurities, bound states arise close to the Fermi energy. In the case of a single impurity, the flux-induced current is found to be suppressed. This can be different when more impurities are introduced in the sample due to the quantum interference effect, which depends sensitively on the relative position between the impurities. We further analyze the effect of small surface defects at the inner or outer edge of the loop, and show that indentation and bulge defects have pronounced and different effects on the supercurrent.

Conductive atomic force microscopy directly detects that the resistive switching is located at the boundaries of the grains. Furthermore, mesoscopic transport measurements reveal a tunnel magnetoresistance. In combination with the resistive switching, this leads to a total of four different resistive states.

“Ginzburg-Landau theory of the zigzag transition in quasi-one-dimensional classical Wigner crystals”. Galván Moya JE, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 84, 134106 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.84.134106
Abstract: We present a mean-field description of the zigzag phase transition of a quasi-one-dimensional system of strongly interacting particles, with interaction potential r−ne−r/λ, that are confined by a power-law potential (yα). The parameters of the resulting one-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau theory are determined analytically for different values of α and n. Close to the transition point for the zigzag phase transition, the scaling behavior of the order parameter is determined. For α=2, the zigzag transition from a single to a double chain is of second order, while for α>2, the one-chain configuration is always unstable and, for α<2, the one-chain ordered state becomes unstable at a certain critical density, resulting in jumps of single particles out of the chain.

“Impact of field-induced quantum confinement in tunneling field-effect devices”. Vandenberghe WG, Sorée B, Magnus W, Groeseneken G, Fischetti MV, Applied physics letters 98, 143503 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.3573812
Abstract: Being the working principle of a tunnel field-effect transistor, band-to-band tunneling is given a rigorous quantum mechanical treatment to incorporate confinement effects, multiple electron and hole valleys, and interactions with phonons. The model reveals that the strong band bending near the gate dielectric, required to create short tunnel paths, results in quantization of the energy bands. Comparison with semiclassical models reveals a big shift in the onset of tunneling. The effective mass difference of the distinct valleys is found to reduce the subthreshold swing steepness.

“Rectification of vortex motion in a circular ratchet channel”. Lin NS, Heitmann TW, Yu K, Plourde BLT, Misko VR, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 84, 144511 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.84.144511
Abstract: We study the dynamics of vortices in an asymmetric (i.e., consisting of triangular cells) ring channel driven by an external ac current I in a Corbino setup. The asymmetric potential rectifies the motion of vortices and induces a net vortex flow without any unbiased external drive, i.e., the ratchet effect. We show that the net flow of vortices strongly depends on vortex density and frequency of the driving current. Depending on the density, we distinguish a single-vortex rectification regime (for low density, when each vortex is rectified individually) determined by the potential-energy landscape inside each cell of the channel (i.e., hard and easy directions) and multi-vortex, or collective, rectification (high-density case) when the inter-vortex interaction becomes important. We analyze the average angular velocity ω of vortices as a function of I and study commensurability effects between the numbers of vortices and cells in the channel and the role of frequency of the applied ac current. We have shown that the commensurability effect results in a stepwise ω-I curve. Besides the integer steps, i.e., the large steps found in the single-vortex case, we also found fractional steps corresponding to fractional ratios between the numbers of vortices and triangular cells. We have performed preliminary measurements on a device containing a single weak-pinning circular ratchet channel in a Corbino geometry and observed a substantial asymmetric vortex response.

“Spin and momentum filtering of electrons on the surface of a topological insulator”. Wu Z, Peeters FM, Chang K, Applied physics letters 98, 162101 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.3581887
Abstract: We investigate theoretically the transport properties of Dirac fermions on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. Dirac electrons can be totally reflected in front of a magnetic/electric p-n junction. For a p-n-p structure, multiple total internal reflections at the interfaces result in the bound states in the channel, which behaves like an electronic waveguide. This p-n-p like structure exhibits spin and momentum filtering features and could be used as a spin and/or charge diode.

“Multiple Dirac particles in AA-stacked graphite and multilayers of graphene”. Lobato I, Partoens B, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 83, 165429 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.83.165429
Abstract: Using the tight-binding formalism we show that in the recently experimentally realized AA-stacked graphite in essence two types of massless relativistic Dirac particles are present with a different effective speed of light. We also investigate how the electronic structure evolves from a single graphene sheet into AA-stacked graphite. It is shown that in contrast to AB-stacked graphene layers, the spectrum of AA-stacked graphene layers can be considered as a superposition of single-layer spectra and only particles with a linear spectrum at the Fermi energy around the K point are present. From the evolution of the band overlap we show that 6 multilayers of AA-stacked graphene already behave as AA-stacked graphite. The evolution of the effective speeds of light of the Dirac particles to their bulk values shows exactly the same behavior. The tight-binding parameters we use to describe AA-stacked graphite and multilayers of graphene are obtained by ab initio calculations.
