Abstract: On the basis of a simplified Hamiltonian for transition metal impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS), the nature of ferromagnetism in p-type III-V DMS are investigated. Ferromagnetism is governed by the Anderson-Hubbard parameter for 3d electrons of Mn2+ and their strong hybridization with the hole carriers in the semiconducting medium. The origin of ferromagnetism in these materials has similarity with the Zener mechanism. From the energetically preferable parallel orientation of Mn spins the Curie temperature is calculated for GaAs:Mn. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: La1-yCayFe0.5+x(Mg,Mo)(0.5-x)O3-delta oxides with the orthorhombic GdFeO3-type perovskite structure have been synthesized at 1573 K. Transmission electron microscopy study for selected samples shows the coexistence of domains of perovskite phases with ordered and disordered B-cations. Mossbauer spectroscopy studies performed at 300 K and 573 K show that while compositions with low Ca-content (La0.55Ca0.45Fe0.5Mg0.2625Mo0.2375O3-delta and La0.5Ca0.5Fe0.6Mg0.175Mo0.225O3-delta) are nearly oxygen stoichiometric, La0.2Ca0.8Fe0.5Mg0.2625Mo0.2375O3-delta is oxygen deficient with delta approximate to 0.15. Oxides are stable in reducing atmosphere (Ar/H-2, 8%) at 1173 K for 12 h. No additional phases have been observed at XRPD patterns of all studied perovskites and Ce1-xGdxO2-x/2 electrolyte mixtures treated at 1173-1373K, while Fe-rich compositions (x >= 0.1) react with Zr1-xYxO2-x/2 electrolyte above 1273 K. Dilatometry studies reveal that all samples show rather low thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) in air of 11.4-12.7 ppm K-1. In reducing atmosphere their TECs were found to increase up to 12.1-15.4 ppm K-1 due to chemical expansion effect. High-temperature electrical conductivity measurements in air and Ar/H-2 atmosphere show that the highest conductivity is observed for Fe- and Ca-rich compositions. Moderate values of electrical conductivity and TEC together with stability towards chemical interaction with typical SOFC electrolytes make novel Fe-containing perovskites promising electrode materials for symmetrical solid oxide fuel cell.

Abstract: Quantum electron transport in side-gated graphene Hall bars is investigated in the presence of quantizing external magnetic fields. The asymmetric potential of four side-gates distorts the otherwise flat bands of the relativistic Landau levels, and creates new propagating states in the Landau spectrum (i.e. snake states). The existence of these new states leads to an interesting modification of the bend and Hall resistances, with new quantizing plateaus appearing in close proximity of the Landau levels. The electron guiding in this system can be understood by studying the current density profiles of the incoming and outgoing modes. From the fact that guided electrons fully transmit without any backscattering (similarly to edge states), we are able to analytically predict the values of the quantized resistances, and they match the resistance data we obtain with our numerical (tight-binding) method. These insights in the electron guiding will be useful in predicting the resistances for other side-gate configurations, and possibly in other system geometries, as long as there is no backscattering of the guided states.

Abstract: Magnetron sputtering is a widely used physical vapor deposition technique for deposition and formation of nanocatalyst thin films and clusters. Nevertheless, so far only few studies investigated this formation process at the fundamental level. We here review atomic scale molecular dynamics simulations aimed at elucidating the nanocatalyst growth process through magnetron sputtering. We first introduce the basic magnetron sputtering background and machinery of molecular dynamics simulations, and then describe the studies conducted in this field so far. We also present a perspective view on how the field may be developed further.

Abstract: Ptychography provides high dose efficiency images that can reveal light elements next to heavy atoms. However, despite ptychography having an otherwise single signed contrast transfer function, contrast reversals can occur when the projected potential becomes strong for both direct and iterative inversion ptychography methods. It has recently been shown that these reversals can often be counteracted in direct ptychography methods by adapting the focus. Here we provide an explanation of why the best contrast is often found with the probe focused to the middle of the sample. The phase contribution due to defocus at each sample slice above and below the central plane in this configuration effectively cancels out, which can prevent contrast reversals when dynamical scattering effects are not overly strong. In addition we show that the convergence angle can be an important consideration for removal of contrast reversals in relatively thin samples.

Abstract: To understand the structure–property relationship of nanostructures, reliably quantifying parameters, such as the number of atoms along the projection direction, is important. Advanced statistical methodologies have made it possible to count the number of atoms for monotype crystalline nanoparticles from a single ADF STEM image. Recent developments enable one to simultaneously acquire multiple ADF STEM images. Here, we present an extended statistics-based method for atom counting from a combination of multiple statistically independent ADF STEM images reconstructed from non-overlapping annular detector collection regions which improves the accuracy and allows one to retrieve precise atom-counts, especially for images acquired with low electron doses and multiple element structures.

Abstract: <script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('We perform a detailed study of the effect of finite bias and magnetic field on the tunneling-induced decay of the state of a quantum dot by applying a recently discovered general duality [Phys. Rev. B 93, 81411 (2016)]. This duality provides deep physical insight into the decay dynamics of electronic open quantum systems with strong Coulomb interaction. It associates the amplitudes of decay eigenmodes of the actual system to the eigenmodes of a so-called dual system with attractive interaction. Thereby, it predicts many surprising features in the transient transport and its dependence on experimental control parameters: the attractive interaction of the dual model shows up as sharp features in the amplitudes of measurable time-dependent currents through the actual repulsive system. In particular, for interacting quantum dots, the time-dependent heat current exhibits a decay mode that dissipates the interaction energy and that is tied to the fermion parity of the system. We show that its decay amplitude has an unexpected gate-voltage dependence that is robust up to sizable bias voltages and then bifurcates, reflecting that the Coulomb blockade is lifted in the dual system. Furthermore, combining our duality relation with the known Iche-duality, we derive new symmetry properties of the decay rates as a function of magnetic field and gate voltage. Finally, we quantify charge- and spin-mode mixing due to the magnetic field using a single mixing parameter.'));

Abstract: We present the Tight-Binding Studio (TB Studio) software package that calculates the different parameters of a tight-binding Hamiltonian from a set of Bloch energy bands obtained from first principle theories such as density functional theory, Hartree-Fock calculations or semi-empirical band-structure theory. This will be helpful for scientists who are interested in studying electronic and optical properties of structures using Green's function theory within the tight-binding approximation. TB Studio is a cross-platform application written in C++ with a graphical user interface design that is user-friendly and easy to work with. This software is powered by Linear Algebra Package C interface library for solving the eigenvalue problems and the standard high performance OpenGL graphic library for real time plotting. TB Studio and its examples together with the tutorials are available for download from tight-binding.com. Abstract: In this study, the impact of diclofenac (DCF), an antiinflammatory drug being extensively used in human health care and veterinary treatment, on the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) was investigated for the first time. Experimental results showed that when DCF concentration increased from 2.5 to 25 mg/kg total suspended solid (TSS), the maximum production of VFAs increased from 599 to 1113 mg COD/L, but further increase of DCF to 47.5 mg/kg TSS decreased VFAs yield to 896 mg COD/L. The mechanism investigation revealed that DCF had no effect on the hydrolysis process, promoted the process of acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and homoacetogenesis, but severely inhibited methanogenesis, leading to the accumulation of VFAs. Microbial community analysis showed that the addition of DCF could promote the relative abundance of VFAs (especially acetic acid) producers, which was well consistent with the results obtained above.

Abstract: Superconducting Cu mixed oxyfluoride, Sr,Cu(O, F)(4+delta), was Obtained via fluorination of Sr2CuO3 by XeF2 in the 100-250 degrees C temperature range in a closed Ni container. The prepared samples exhibited a lower T-c in comparison with earlier reported values. Different samples in the Sr-Cu-O-F system were prepared by a solid-state reaction at 220-400 degrees C, but no formation of the oxyfluoride was detected even with an addition of xenon difluoride. These data allow one to draw conclusions on the metastability of the oxyfluoride under the conditions used, Electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction studies revealed large amounts of badly crystallized SrF2; this could be a reason for the small superconducting volume fraction as well as for the inhomogeneous distribution of the anions.

Abstract: A polycrystalline sample of Ba3Fe2TeO9 having the 6H perovskite structure has been prepared in a solid-state reaction and studied by a combination of electron microscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction. Partial ordering of Fe3+ and Te6+ cations occurs over the six-coordinate sites; the corner-sharing octahedra are predominantly occupied by the former and the face-sharing octahedra by a 1:1 mixture of the two. On cooling through the temperature range 18 < T/K < 295 an increasing number of spins join an antiferromagnetic backbone running through the structure while the remainder show complex relaxation effects. At 3 K an antiferromagnetic phase and a spin glass coexist.

Abstract: Hybrid pixel direct electron detectors are gaining popularity in electron microscopy due to their excellent properties. Some commercial cameras based on this technology are relatively affordable which makes them attractive tools for experimentation especially in combination with an SEM setup. To support this, a detector characterization (Modulation Transfer Function, Detective Quantum Efficiency) of an Advacam Minipix and Advacam Advapix detector in the 15–30 keV range was made. In the current work we present images of Point Spread Function, plots of MTF/DQE curves and values of DQE(0) for these detectors. At low beam currents, the silicon detector layer behaviour should be dominant, which could make these findings transferable to any other available detector based on either Medipix2, Timepix or Timepix3 provided the same detector layer is used.
