“Terahertz radiation from oscillating electrons in laser-induced wake fields”. Cao L-H, Yu W, Xu H, Zheng C-Y, Liu Z-J, Li B, Bogaerts A, Physical review : E : statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics 70, 046408 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.70.046408
Abstract: Strong terahertz (1THz=1012Hz) radiation can be generated by the electron oscillation in fs-laser-induced wake fields. The interaction of a fs-laser pulse with a low-density plasma layer is studied in detail using numerical simulations. The spatial distribution and temporal evolution of terahertz electron current developed in a low-density plasma layer are presented, which enables us to calculate the intensity distribution of THz radiation. It is shown that laser and plasma parameters, such as laser intensity, pulse width, and background plasma density, are of key importance to the process. The optimum condition for wake-field excitation and terahertz emission is discussed upon the simulation results. Radiation peaked at 6.4 THz, with 900 fs duration and 9% bandwidth, can be generated in a plasma of density 5×1017cm−3. It turns out that the maximum radiation intensity scales as n03a04 when wake field is resonantly excited, where n0 and a0 are, respectively, the plasma density and the normalized field amplitude of the laser pulse.

Abstract: We report on a molecular dynamics study of small classical two-dimensional clusters with ringlike configurations. We focus on the particles motion at low temperatures before the radial and angular melting sets in. It is shown that in magic number configurations a local radial melting of subshells occur, which is related to the intershell rotation.

“Orientational charge density waves and the metal-insulator transition in polymerized KC60”. Verberck B, Nikolaev AV, Michel KH, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 71, 165117 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.71.165117
Abstract: A theoretical model is presented for the description of the metal-insulator transition which accompanies the structural phase transition at T approximate to 50 K in polymerized KC60. The model involves orientational charge density waves (along the C-60 polymer chains) which were introduced previously for a description of the structural phase transition. A satisfactory qualitative and quantitative understanding is obtained when the three-dimensionality of the crystal and the presence of the K+ counterions is properly taken into account.

Abstract: Simulation results of electrostatics in Si cylindrical junctionless nanowire transistors with a homogenous channel are presented. Junctionless transistors including strain and arbitrary crystallographic orientations are studied. Size quantization effects are simulated by self-consistent solutions of the Poisson and Schrodinger equations. The 6 x 6 k.p method is employed for the calculation of the valence subband structure in a junctionless nanowire pFET. The influence of stress/strain and crystallographic channel orientation on to the electrostatics in terms of subband structure, charge density, and C-V curve is systematically studied. Abstract: We propose an effective potential for an excess electron near the helium liquid-vapor interface that takes into account the diffuseness of the liquid-vapor interface and the classical image potential. The splitting of the first two excited states of the excess electron bound to the helium liquid-vapor interface as a function of an external constant electric field applied perpendicular to the interface is in excellent agreement with recent experiments. The effect of a parallel magnetic field on the energy levels are calculated. Single-electron tunneling of the electron out of its surface state is studied as a function of the electric field applied to the system. We found that the tunneling time has a linear dependence on the electric field.

“Critical currents of the phase slip process in the presence of electromagnetic radiation : rectification for time asymmetric ac signal”. Vodolazov DY, Elmuradov A, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 72, 134509 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.72.064509
Abstract: We studied theoretically the effect of time symmetric and asymmetric electromagnetic (e.m.) radiation on the phase-slip process in superconducting wires in the regime where there is no stimulation of superconductivity. We found that for large amplitudes j(ac) of the symmetric ac signal the value of the lower critical current j(c1)(j(ac)) at which the voltage vanishes in the sample oscillates as a function of j(ac). The amplitude of these oscillations decays with increasing power of the ac signal, and we explain it either by the existence of a maximal current j(c3) beyond which no phase slips can be created or by a weak heat removal from the sample. Applying an asymmetric in time signal (with zero dc current) we show that it may lead to a finite voltage in the system (i.e., ratchet effect). At high enough frequencies the rectified voltage is directly proportional to the frequency of the applied e.m. radiation. These properties resemble in many aspects the behavior of a Josephson junction under e.m. radiation. The differences are mainly connected to the effect of the transport current on the magnitude of the order parameter.

“Melting and evaporation in classical two-dimensional clusters confined by a Coulomb potential”. Ferreira WP, Peeters FM, Farias GA, Physical review : E : statistical, nonlinear, and soft matter physics 72, 041502 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.72.041502
Abstract: The thermal properties of a two-dimensional classical cluster of negatively charged particles bound by a punctual positive charge are presented. The melting phenomenon is analyzed and the features which characterize such a solid-liquid transition are highlighted. We found that the presence of metastable states strongly modifies the melting scenario, and that the melting temperature of the system is determined by the height of the saddle point energy separating the ground state and the metastable state. Due to the particular type of confinement potential considered in this paper, we also found that, at sufficiently large temperature, the cluster can become thermally ionized.
