Abstract: We show numerically that a rotating, harmonically trapped mixture of two Bose-Einstein-condensed superfluids cancontrary to its single-species counterpartcontain a multiply quantized vortex in the ground state of the system. This giant vortex can occur without any accompanying single-quantum vortices, may either be coreless or have an empty core, and can be realized in a Rb87−K41 Bose-Einstein condensate. Our results not only provide a rare example of a stable, solitary multiquantum vortex but also reveal exotic physics stemming from the coexistence of multiple, compositionally distinct condensates in one system.

Abstract: In a numerical experiment based on Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, we demonstrate unique topological quantum coherence in optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Exploring the fact that vortices in a rotating BEC can be pinned by a geometric arrangement of laser beams, we show the parameter range in which vortex-antivortex molecules or multiquantum vortices are formed as a consequence of the optically imposed symmetry. Being low-energy states, we discuss the conditions for spontaneous nucleation of these unique molecules and their direct experimental observation, and provoke the potential use of the phase print of an antivortex or a multiquantum vortex when realized in unconventional circumstances.

Abstract: A twin boundary in one of the layers of a twisted van der Waals heterostructure separates regions with near opposite inter-layer twist angles. In a MoS₂/WSe₂bilayer, the regions with<inline-formula><tex-math><?CDATA $Rh^h$?></tex-math><math overflow=“scroll”><msubsup><mi>R</mi><mi>h</mi><mi>h</mi></msubsup></math><inline-graphic href=“tdmac529dieqn1.gif” type=“simple” /></inline-formula>and<inline-formula><tex-math><?CDATA $Rh^X$?></tex-math><math overflow=“scroll”><msubsup><mi>R</mi><mi>h</mi><mi>X</mi></msubsup></math><inline-graphic href=“tdmac529dieqn2.gif” type=“simple” /></inline-formula>stacking registry that defined the sub-lattices of the moiré honeycomb pattern would be mirror-reflected across such a twist boundary. In that case, we demonstrate that topologically protected chiral moiré exciton states are confined at the twist boundary. These are one-dimensional and uni-directional excitons with opposite velocities for excitons composed by electronic states with opposite valley/spin character, enabling intrinsic, guided, and far reaching valley-polarized exciton currents.

Abstract: A magnetic moment inside an extreme type II superconductor can have three, but not one or two, confined vortex loops near to the core. For a sub-micron superconducting particle the confined vortex loops eventually break up and reach the surface turning into external vortex pairs.

Abstract: We have used high resolution Hall probe microscopy to image vortex-antivortex (V-AV) 'molecules' induced in superconducting Pb films by the stray fields from square arrays of ferromagnetic Co/Pt dots. We have directly observed spontaneous V-AV pairs and studied how they interact with added 'free' (anti)fluxons in an applied magnetic field. We observe a rich variety of subtle phenomena arising from competing symmetries in our system which can either drive added antivortices to join AV shells around nanomagnets or stabilise the translationally symmetric AV lattice between the dots. Added vortices annihilate AV shells, leading eventually to a stable 'nulling' state with no free fluxons, which should exhibit a strongly (field-)enhanced critical current. At higher densities we actually observe vortex shells around the magnets, stabilised by the asymmetric anti-pinning potential. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with Ginzburg-Landau calculations.

Abstract: We report the equilibrium vortex phase diagram of a rotating two-band Fermi gas confined to a cylindrically symmetric parabolic trapping potential, using the recently developed finite-temperature effective field theory (Klimin et al 2016 Phys. Rev. A 94 023620). A non-monotonic resonant dependence of the free energy as a function of the temperature and the rotation frequency is revealed for a two-band superfluid. We particularly focus on novel features that appear as a result of interband interactions and can be experimentally resolved. The resonant dependence of the free energy is directly manifested in vortex phase diagrams, where areas of stability for both integer and fractional vortex states are found. The study embraces the BCS-BEC crossover regime and the entire temperature range below the critical temperature T-c. Significantly different behavior of vortex matter as a function of the interband coupling is revealed in the BCS and BEC regimes.

Abstract: The pinning properties of a superconducting thin film with a square array of blind holes are studied using the nonlinear GinzburgLandau theory. Although blind holes provide a weaker pinning potential than holes (also called antidots), several novel vortex structures are predicted for different size and thickness of the blind holes. Orientational dimer and trimer vortex states as well as concentric vortex shells can nucleate in the blind holes. In addition, we predict the stabilization of giant vortices that may be located both in the pinning centers and/or at the interstitial sites, as well as the combination of giant vortices with sets of individual vortices. For large blind holes, local vortex shell structures inside the blind holes may transfer their symmetry to interstitial vortices as well. The subtle interplay of shell formation and traditional Abrikosov vortex lattices inside the blind holes is also studied for different numbers of trapped vortices.

Abstract: We determine the energy of an interface between a multiband superconducting and a normal half-space, in presence of an applied magnetic field, based on a multiband Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approach. We obtain that the multiband surface energy is fully determined by the critical temperature, electronic densities of states, and superconducting gap functions associated with the different band condensates. This furthermore yields an expression for the thermodynamic critical magnetic field, in presence of an arbitrary number of contributing bands. Subsequently, we investigate the sign of the surface energy as a function of material parameters, through numerical solution of the GL equations. Here, we consider two distinct cases: (i) standard multiband superconductors with attractive interactions, and (ii) a three-band superconductor with a chiral ground state with phase frustration, arising from repulsive interband interactions. Furthermore, we apply this approach to several prime examples of multiband superconductors, such as metallic hydrogen and MgB2, based on microscopic parameters obtained from first-principles calculations.

Abstract: First-principles calculations have been carried out to investigate the stability, structural and electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) hydrogenated GaAs with three possible geometries: chair, zigzag-line and boat configurations. The effect of van der Waals interactions on 2D H-GaAs systems has also been studied. These configurations were found to be energetic and dynamic stable, as well as having a semiconducting character. Although 2D GaAs adsorbed with H tends to form a zigzag-line configuration, the energy differences between chair, zigzag-line and boat are very small which implies the metastability of the system. Chair and boat configurations display a – direct bandgap nature, while pristine 2D-GaAs and zigzag-line are indirect semiconductors. The bandgap sizes of all configurations are also hydrogen dependent, and wider than that of pristine 2D-GaAs with both PBE and HSE functionals. Even though DFT-vdW interactions increase the adsorption energies and reduce the equilibrium distances of H-GaAs systems, it presents, qualitatively, the same physical results on the stability and electronic properties of our studied systems with PBE functional. According to our results, 2D buckled gallium arsenide is a good candidate to be synthesized by hydrogen surface passivation as its group III-V partners 2D buckled gallium nitride and boron nitride. The hydrogenation of 2D-GaAs tunes the bandgap of pristine 2D-GaAs, which makes it a potential candidate for optoelectronic applications in the blue and violet ranges of the visible electromagnetic spectrum.

Abstract: A thorough understanding of the skyrmion motion through nanotracks is a prerequisite to realize the full potential of spintronic applications like the skyrmion racetrack memory. One of the challenges is to place the data, i.e. skyrmions, on discrete fixed positions, e.g. below a read or write head. In the domain-wall racetrack memory, one proposed solution to this problem was patterning the nanotrack with notches. Following this approach, this paper reports on the skyrmion mobility through a nanotrack with periodic notches (constrictions) made using variations in the chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We observe that such notches induce a coupling between the mobility and the skyrmion breathing mode, which manifests itself as velocity-dependent oscillations of the skyrmion diameter and plateaus in which the velocity is independent of the driving force. Despite the fact that domain walls are far more rigid objects than skyrmions, we were able to perform an analogous study and, surprisingly, found even larger plateaus of constant velocity. For both systems it is straightforward to tune the velocity at these plateaus by changing the design of the notched nanotrack geometry, e.g. by varying the distance between the notches. Therefore, the notch-induced coupling between the excited modes and the mobility could offer a strategy to stabilize the velocity against unwanted perturbations in racetrack-like applications. In the last part of the paper we focus on the low-current mobility regimes, whose very rich dynamics at nonzero temperatures are very similar to the operating principle of recently developed probabilistic logic devices. This proves that the mobility of nanomagnetic structures through a periodically modulated track is not only interesting from a fundamental point of view, but has a future in many spintronic applications.

Abstract: Recently, interlayer and intralayer excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. In spite of a growing interest, these layer-resolved excitons in the presence of external stimuli, such as strain, remain not fully understood. Here, using density-functional theory calculations with many-body effects, we explore the excitonic properties of vertically stacked MoSe2/WSe2 heterobilayer in the presence of in-plane biaxial strain of up to 5%. We calculate the strain dependence of exciton absorption spectrum, oscillator strength, wave function, and binding energy by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation on top of the standard GW approach. We identify the interlayer and intralayer excitons by analyzing their electron-hole weights and spatial wave functions. We show that with the increase in strain magnitude, the absorption spectrum of the interlayer and intralayer excitons is red-shifted and re-ordered, and the binding energies of these layer-resolved excitons decrease monotonically and almost linearly. We derive the sensitivity of exciton binding energy to the applied strain and find that the intralayer excitons are more sensitive to strain than the interlayer excitons. For instance, a sensitivity of -7.9 meV/% is derived for the intra-MoSe2-layer excitons, which is followed by -7.4 meV/% for the intra-WSe2-layer excitons, and by -4.2 meV/% for the interlayer excitons. Our results indicate that interlayer and intralayer excitons in vertically stacked MoSe2/WSe2 heterobilayer are efficiently tunable by in-plane biaxial strain.

Abstract: We explore the flatness of conduction and valence bands of interlayer excitons in MoS2/WSe2 van der Waals heterobilayers, tuned by interlayer twist angle, pressure, and external electric field. We employ an efficient continuum model where the moire pattern from lattice mismatch and/or twisting is represented by an equivalent mesoscopic periodic potential. We demonstrate that the mismatch moire potential is too weak to produce significant flattening. Moreover, we draw attention to the fact that the quasi-particle effective masses around the Gamma-point and the band flattening are reduced with twisting. As an alternative approach, we show (i) that reducing the interlayer distance by uniform vertical pressure can significantly increase the effective mass of the moire hole, and (ii) that the moire depth and its band flattening effects are strongly enhanced by accessible electric gating fields perpendicular to the heterobilayer, with resulting electron and hole effective masses increased by more than an order of magnitude – leading to record-flat bands. These findings impose boundaries on the commonly generalized benefits of moire twistronics, while also revealing alternative feasible routes to achieve truly flat electron and hole bands to carry us to strongly correlated excitonic phenomena on demand.

Abstract: When using hexagonal boron-nitride (hBN) as a substrate for graphene, the resulting moire pattern creates secondary Dirac points. By encapsulating a multilayer graphene within aligned hBN sheets the controlled moire stacking may offer even richer benefits. Using advanced tight-binding simulations on atomistically-relaxed heterostructures, here we show that the gap at the secondary Dirac point can be opened in selected moire-stacking configurations, and is independent of any additional vertical gating of the heterostructure. On the other hand, gating can broadly tune the gap at the principal Dirac point, and may thereby strongly compress the first moire mini-band in width against the moire-induced gap at the secondary Dirac point. We reveal that in hBN-encapsulated bilayer graphene this novel mechanism can lead to isolated bands flatter than 10 meV under moderate gating, hence presenting a convenient pathway towards electronically-controlled strongly-correlated states on demand.

Abstract: MXenes are an emerging class of two-dimensional materials, which in their thinnest limit consist of a monolayer of carbon or nitrogen (X) sandwiched between two transition metal (M) layers. We have systematically searched for superconductivity among MXenes for a range of transition metal elements, based on a full first-principles characterization in combination with the Eliashberg formalism. Thus, we identified six superconducting MXenes: three carbides (Mo2C, W2C and Sc2C) and three nitrides (Mo2N, W2N and Ta2N). The highest critical temperature of similar to 16 K is found in Mo2N, for which a successful synthesis method has been established [Urbankowskiet al.,Nanoscale, 2017,9, 17722-17730]. Moreover, W2N presents a novel case of competing superconducting and charge density wave phases.
