Abstract: The three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in a porous Ni50.8Ti49.2 alloy has been re-constructed by “Slice-and-View” in a Focused Ion Beam/Scanning Electron Microscope (FIB/SEM). The 3D configuration of these precipitates forming a network structure in the B2 austenite matrix has been characterized via 3D visualization and quantitative analysis including volume fraction, skeleton, degree of anisotropy and local thickness. It is found that dense Ni4Ti3 precipitates occupy 54% of the volume in the B2 austenite matrix. Parallel Ni4Ti3 precipitates grow alongside the surface of a micro-pore, yielding an asymmetric structure, while nano voids do not seem to affect the growth of Ni4Ti3 precipitates. The small average local thickness of the precipitates around 60 nm allows their coherency with the matrix, and further induces the R-phase transformation in the matrix. On the other hand, the B2 matrix exhibits a winding and narrow structure with a skeleton of 18.20 mm and a thickness similar to the precipitates. This discontinuous matrix segmented by the Ni4Ti3 network and pores is responsible for the gradual transformation by stalling the martensite propagation.

Abstract: We study the photoionization of the s states in the systems bound by sufficiently weak central fields V(r) for the large photon energies corresponding to the relativistic photoelectrons. We demonstrate that the energy dependence of the photoionization cross section can be obtained without solving the wave equation. We show that the shape of the energy dependence of the cross section is determined by analytical properties of the binding potential V(r). We find the cross sections for the potentials V(r) which have singularities in the origin, on the real axis and in the complex plane.

Abstract: The seasonal changes of a large set of atmospheric pollutants (i.e., gases, water-soluble aerosols, metallic/elemental components and black carbon (BC) content) have been studied over the southern bight of the North Sea (the Belgian Continental Shelf) and the English Channel during several marine sampling campaigns, carried out in 2010-2011. A coastal research station at De Haan, Belgium was concurrently used as a background air monitoring site. Size-segregated aerosols (PM1, PM2.5-1, PM10-2.5) were analyzed for particulate mass, elemental content and water-soluble (ionic) compounds, while the equivalent BC content in PM10 was monitored with an Aethalometer. The results clearly demonstrated that the aerosols originating from ship exhaust emissions contributed mostly to fine fraction (PM1), and to a lesser extent to medium-sized fraction (PM2.5-1), whereas components of sea spray and of mineral/soil origin were dominating in the medium-size and coarse aerosol fractions. Looking at seasonal differences, more ship emission related components occurred in the fine and medium-sized PM during winter. Mineral aerosol components were more apparent in coarse PM and especially during the cold season, increased levels were noted. Similarly, higher concentrations of marine fine PM were found during winter, likely due to more extensive ship emissions and/or calm weather conditions. Gaseous pollutants (e.g., HNO2, HNO3, HCl, SO2, NH3) originating from exhaust fumes of ocean-going ships mostly reached the maximum levels in the cold season as well, thus supporting the more intense formation of secondary aerosols. The seasonal trends of total (inorganic) ionic species sampled on the open sea and at the coastal station were usually similar to those of the corresponding PM masses, peaking in the cold season. Sea salt bound fine sulfate and nitrate peaked in spring or the cold season for marine areas, whereas for the coastal site they clearly reached the maximum in the cold season. Ammonium-bound nitrates and sulfates in each PM fraction reached their peak air levels in the cold season over marine sites. Similar seasonal trends could be observed for the coastal station. The general tendency of aerosol distribution over the study areas was independent of the sampling site: the higher the aerosol mass on the open sea with ship traffic, the higher the suspended particulate mass sampled at the coast.

Abstract: In this work we compute the torque field present in a ferromagnet in contact with a metallic nanowire when a skyrmion is present. If the nanowire is narrow enough, then the current is carried by a single conduction band. In this regime the classical torque model breaks down and we show that a skyrmion driven by spin transfer torque moves in a different direction than predicted by the classical model. However, the amount of charge current required to move a skyrmion with a certain velocity in the single-band regime is similar to a classical model of torque where it is implicitly assumed current transport by many conduction bands. The single-band regime is more efficient creating spin current from charge current because of the perfect polarization of the single band but is less efficient creating torque from spin current. Nevertheless, it is possible to take profit of the single-band regime to move skyrmions even with no net charge or spin current flowing between the device contacts. We have also been able to recover the classical limit considering an ensemble of only a few electronic states. In this limit we have discovered that electron diffusion needs to be considered even in ballistic nanowires due the effect of the skyrmion structure on the electron current.

Abstract: This paper benchmarks various epitaxial growth schemes based on n-type group-IV materials as viable source/drain candidates for Ge nMOS devices. Si:P grown at low temperature on Ge, gives an active carrier concentration as high as 3.5 x 10(20) cm(-3) and a contact resistivity down to 7.5 x 10(-9) Omega.cm(2). However, Si:P growth is highly defective due to large lattice mismatch between Si and Ge. Within the material stacks assessed, one option for Ge nMOS source/drain stressors would be to stack Si:P, deposited at contact level, on top of a selectively grown n-SiyGe1-x-ySnx at source/drain level, in line with the concept of Si passivation of n-Ge surfaces to achieve low contact resistivities as reported in literature (Martens et al. 2011 Appl. Phys. Lett., 98, 013 504). The saturation in active carrier concentration with increasing P (or As)-doping is the major bottleneck in achieving low contact resistivities for as-grown Ge or SiyGe1-x-ySnx. We focus on understanding various dopant deactivation mechanisms in P-doped Ge and Ge1-xSnx alloys. First principles simulation results suggest that P deactivation in Ge and Ge1-xSnx can be explained both by P-clustering and donor-vacancy complexes. Positron annihilation spectroscopy analysis, suggests that dopant deactivation in P-doped Ge and Ge1-xSnx is primarily due to the formation of P-n-V and SnmPn-V clusters. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Abstract: We used atom probe tomography to complement electron microscopy for the investigation of spinodal decomposition in alkali feldspar. To this end, gem-quality alkali feldspar of intermediate composition with a mole fraction of a(K) = 0.43 of the K end-member was prepared from Madagascar orthoclase by ion-exchange with (NaK)Cl molten salt. During subsequent annealing at 550 degrees C and close to ambient pressure the ion-exchanged orthoclase unmixed producing a coherent lamellar intergrowth of Na-rich and K-rich lamellae. The chemical separation was completed, and equilibrium Na-K partitioning between the different lamellae was attained within four days, which was followed by microstructural coarsening. After annealing for 4 days, the wavelength of the lamellar microstructure was approximate to 17 nm and it increased to approximate to 30 nm after annealing for 16 days. The observed equilibrium compositions of the Na-rich and K-rich lamellae are in reasonable agreement with an earlier experimental determination of the coherent solvus. The excess energy associated with compositional gradients at the lamellar interfaces was quantified from the initial wavelength of the lamellar microstructure and the lamellar compositions as obtained from atom probe tomography using the Cahn-Hilliard theory. The capability of atom probe tomography to deliver quantitative chemical compositions at nm resolution opens new perspectives for studying the early stages of exsolution. In particular, it helps to shed light on the phase relations in nm scaled coherent intergrowth.

Abstract: The microstructural characteristics of two polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) films with different electrical properties produced by low-pressure chemical vapour deposition on top of high resistivity silicon substrates were investigated by advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM), including high resolution aberration corrected TEM and automated crystallographic orientation mapping in TEM. The results reveal that the nature of the poly-Si film/Si substrate interface is the main factor controlling the electrical resistivity of the poly-Si films. The high resistivity and high electrical linearity of poly-Si films are strongly promoted by the Sigma 3 twin type character of the poly-Si/Si substrate interface, leading to the generation of a huge amount of extended defects including stacking faults, Sigma 3 twin boundaries as well as Sigma 9 grain boundaries at this interface. Furthermore, a high density of interfacial dislocations has been observed at numerous common and more exotic grain boundaries deviating from their standard crystallographic planes. In contrast, poly-Si film/Si substrate interfaces with random character do not favour the formation of such complex patterns of defects, leading to poor electrical resistivity of the poly-Si film. This finding opens windows for the development of high resistivity silicon substrates for Radio Frequency (RF) integrated circuits (ICs) applications.

Abstract: Two Ti-SBA-15 catalysts are synthesized using techniques that should either deposit Ti atoms specifically at the SBA-15 surface or allow Ti-containing species to exist at both the surface and within the bulk of SBA-15. The materials have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman and UV visible spectroscopies, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry microscopies, and N-2 physisorption experiments. They have been applied in the total oxidation of phenol under catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) conditions and using photo- and plasma promotion. The materials retain the structure of SBA-15 following the doping in both cases and Ti incorporation is confirmed. The nature of the incorporated Ti remains unclear-with evidence for anatase TiO2 (from Raman and UV vis analysis) and evidence for atomically dispersed Ti from FTIR. In terms of reactivity, the presence of Ti in the in situ-prepared catalyst improves reactivity in the photopromoted reaction (increasing conversion from 28 to 60%), while both Ti catalysts improve reactivity in the CWAO reaction (by 7% over the in situ catalyst and by 25% over the grafted material). The presence of Ti has no beneficial effect on conversion in the plasma-promoted reaction. Here, however, Ti does affect the nature of the oxidized intermediates formed during the total phenol oxidation.

Abstract: Crystal structure prediction is the holy grail of crystal engineering and is key to its ambition of driving the formation of solids based on the selection of their molecular constituents. However, this noble quest is hampered by the limited predictability of the incorporation of solvent molecules, first and foremost the ubiquitous water. In this context, we herein report the structure of four methylene blue cyanometallate phases, where anions with various shapes and charges influence the packing motif and lead to the formation of differently hydrated structures. Importantly, water molecules are observed to play various roles as isolated fillings, dimers, or an infinite network with up to 13 water molecules per repeating unit. Each crystal structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and evaluated with the aid of Hirshfeld surface analysis, focussing on the role of water molecules and the hierarchy of different classes of interactions in the overall supramolecular landscape of the crystals. Finally, the collected pieces of evidence are matched together to highlight the leading role of MB stacking and to derive an explanation for the observed hydration diversity based on the structural role of water molecules in the crystal architecture.

Abstract: Non-thermal plasma (NTP), an ionized gas generated at ambient pressure and temperature, has been an emerging technology for medical applications. Through controlled delivery of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS), NTP can elicit hormetic cellular responses, thus stimulating broad therapeutic effects. To enable clinical translation of the promising preclinical research into NTP therapy, a deeper understanding of NTP interactions with clinical substrates is profoundly needed. Since NTP-generated ROS/RNS will inevitably interact with blood in several clinical contexts, understanding their stability in this system is crucial. In this study, two medically relevant NTP delivery modalities were used to assess the stability of NTP-generated ROS/RNS in three aqueous solutions with increasing organic complexities: phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), blood plasma (BP), and processed whole blood. NTP-generated RNS collectively (NO2−, ONOO−), H2O2, and ONOO− exclusively were analyzed over time. We demonstrated that NTP-generated RNS and H2O2 were stable in PBS but scavenged by different components of the blood. While RNS remained stable in BP after initial scavenging effects, it was completely reduced in processed whole blood. On the other hand, H2O2 was completely scavenged in both liquids over time. Our previously developed luminescent probe europium(III) was used for precision measurement of ONOO− concentration. NTP-generated ONOO− was detected in all three liquids for up to at least 30 seconds, thus highlighting its therapeutic potential. Based on our results, we discussed the necessary considerations to choose the most optimal NTP modality for delivery of ROS/RNS to and via blood in the clinical context.

Abstract: Sr2CrO2Cr2As2 and Ba2CrO2Cr2As2 with Cr2+ ions in CrO2 sheets and in CrAs layers crystallize with the Sr2Mn3Sb2O2 structure (space group I4/mmm, Z = 2) and lattice parameters a = 4.00800(2) Å, c = 18.8214(1) Å (Sr2CrO2Cr2As2) and a = 4.05506(2) Å, c = 20.5637(1) Å (Ba2CrO2Cr2As2) at room temperature. Powder neutron diffraction reveals checkerboard-type antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cr2+ ions in the arsenide layers below TN1Sr, of 600(10) K (Sr2CrO2Cr2As2) and TN1Ba 465(5) K (Ba2CrO2Cr2As2) with the moments initially directed perpendicular to the layers in both compounds. Checkerboard-type antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cr2+ ions in the oxide layer below 230(5) K for Ba2CrO2Cr2As2 occurs with these moments also perpendicular to the layers, consistent with the orientation preferences of d4 moments in the two layers. In contrast, below 330(5) K in Sr2CrO2Cr2As2, the oxide layer Cr2+ moments are initially oriented in the CrO2 plane; but on further cooling, these moments rotate to become perpendicular to the CrO2 planes, while the moments in the arsenide layers rotate by 90° with the moments on the two sublattices remaining orthogonal throughout [behavior recently reported independently by Liu et al. [Liu et al. Phys. Rev. B 2018, 98, 134416]]. In Sr2CrO2Cr2As2, electron diffraction and high resolution powder X-ray diffraction data show no evidence for a structural distortion that would allow the two Cr2+ sublattices to couple, but high resolution neutron powder diffraction data suggest a small incommensurability between the magnetic structure and the crystal structure, which may account for the coupling of the two sublattices and the observed spin reorientation. The saturation values of the Cr2+ moments in the CrO2 layers (3.34(1) μB (for Sr2CrO2Cr2As2) and 3.30(1) μB (for Ba2CrO2Cr2As2)) are larger than those in the CrAs layers (2.68(1) μB for Sr2CrO2Cr2As2 and 2.298(8) μB for Ba2CrO2Cr2As2) reflecting greater covalency in the arsenide layers.

Abstract: Transmission electron microscopy and finite element-based dislocation simulations were combined to study the development of dislocation microstructures after cyclic deformation of single crystal and bicrystal Ni micropillars oriented for multi-slip. A direct correlation between large accumulation of plastic strain and the presence of dislocation cell walls in the single crystal micropillars was observed, while the presence of the grain boundary hampered the formation of wall-like structures in agreement with a smaller accumulated plastic strain. Automated crystallographic orientation and nanostrain mapping using transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of lattice heterogeneities associated to the cell walls including long range elastic strain fields. By combining the nanostrain mapping with an inverse modelling approach, information about dislocation density, line orientation and Burgers vector direction was derived, which is not accessible otherwise in such dense dislocation structures. Simulations showed that the image forces associated with the grain boundary in this specific bicrystal configuration have only a minor influence on dislocation behavior. Thus, the reduced occurrence of “mature” cell walls in the bicrystal can be attributed to the available volume, which is too small to accommodate cell structures.

Abstract: Purpose Social indicators are not easy to be quantitatively analyzed, although at the local scale, the social impacts might be relevant and important. Using the existing approaches for both quantitative and semi-qualitative measurements, this study aims to assess the social impacts of a company working on algae production systems in Belgium through social life cycle analysis (SLCA). By highlighting the opportunities and challenges on the way of applying the existing SLCA approaches at company level, the objective of this study is to contribute to the development of a suitable and clear SLCA approach when a company is considered as the unit of analysis. Methods Based on the list of potential social impact categories suggested by the United Nations Environment Program/Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (UNEP/SETAC) guidelines (2009) for SLCA, three stakeholder groups (workers, consumers, and local community) and three subcategories associated with each stakeholder group were identified as the most relevant for carbon capture and utilization technologies. Company and sector level data were collected using existing documents and reports, and the data were analyzed and scored using a combined quantitative and semi-quantitative approach to develop a social assessment model for the case study. Results and discussion The company appears to perform well for all the evaluated social indicators except the one related to the subcategory “equal opportunity/discrimination for workers” for which the share of women employed is lower compared with the sector-level data. The results of our assessment were further discussed regarding the challenges and limitations of performing SLCA at the company level. Based on our experience, the validity of the outcomes is significantly influenced by the data availability, the generality of the indicators introduced within the UNEP/SETAC guidelines, and the subjectivity in data collection for the semi-quantitative assessment among others. Conclusions By highlighting the difficulties and challenges of applying the SLCA at the company level, our study provides a starting point for improving the quantitative assessment and monitoring social implications at the company level within a regional foreground in Europe.

Abstract: Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a much-discussed material for oxide electronics and neuromorphic computing applications. Here, heteroepitaxy of VO2 is realized on top of oxide nanosheets that cover either the amorphous silicon dioxide surfaces of Si substrates or X-ray transparent silicon nitride membranes. The out-of-plane orientation of the VO2 thin films is controlled at will between (011)(M1)/(110)(R) and (-402)(M1)/(002)(R) by coating the bulk substrates with Ti0.87O2 and NbWO6 nanosheets, respectively, prior to VO2 growth. Temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction and automated crystal orientation mapping in microprobe transmission electron microscope mode (ACOM-TEM) characterize the high phase purity, the crystallographic and orientational properties of the VO2 films. Transport measurements and soft X-ray absorption in transmission are used to probe the VO2 metal-insulator transition, showing results of a quality equal to those from epitaxial films on bulk single-crystal substrates. Successful local manipulation of two different VO2 orientations on a single substrate is demonstrated using VO2 grown on lithographically patterned lines of Ti0.87O2 and NbWO6 nanosheets investigated by electron backscatter diffraction. Finally, the excellent suitability of these nanosheet-templated VO2 films for advanced lensless imaging of the metal-insulator transition using coherent soft X-rays is discussed.

Abstract: Thermoelectric materials and magnetocaloric materials are promising candidates for solid-state refrigeration applications. The combination of thermoelectric and magnetocaloric effects could potentially lead to more efficient refrigeration techniques. We designed and successfully synthesized Gd/YbAl3 composites using a YbAl3 matrix with good low-temperature thermoelectric performance and Gd microspheres with a high magnetocaloric performance, using a sintering condition of 750 degrees C and 50 MPa. Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), it was discovered that the heterointerface between Gd and YbAl 3 is composed of five sequential interfacial layers: GdAl3, GdAl2, GdAl, Gd3Al2, and Gd3Al. The diffusion of Al atoms plays a crucial role in the formation of these interfacial layers, while Yb or Gd do not participate in the interlayer diffusion. This work provides the essential structural information for further optimizing and designing high-performance composites for thermoelectric-magnetocaloric hybrid refrigeration applications.
