Abstract |
We have studied granular films consisting of nanoscale Ga droplets formed on GaAs films via a method of vacuum annealing to promote As evaporation. For temperatures and magnetic fields below the bulk Ga critical parameters, the samples are very sensitive towards external microwave radiation when two point voltage measurements are performed. Together with the observation of an oscillating magnetic field dependence of the voltage, a scenario in which the samples consist of Josephson-coupled loops seems to be the most likely one for explaining the obtained results. |

Abstract |
We present an investigation of the orientations and positions of tubular fullerene molecules (C90, ..., C200) encapsulated in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), a series of so-called fullerene nanopeapods. We find that increasing the tube radius leads to the following succession of energetically stable regimes: (1) lying molecules positioned on the tube's long axis; (2) tilted molecules on the tube's long axis; and (3) lying molecules shifted away from the tube's long axis. As opposed to C70 and C80 molecules encapsulated in a SWCNT, standing orientations do not develop. Our results are relevant for the possible application of molecular-orientation-dependent electronic properties of fullerene nanopeapods, and also for the interpretation of future experiments on double-walled carbon nanotube formation by annealing fullerene peapod systems. |

Abstract |
In this work, the magnetic properties of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) submitted to an external magnetic field are studied using a Metropolis algorithm. The influence on the M(B) curves of the size distribution of the nanoparticles, of uniaxial anisotropy, and of dipolar interaction between the cores are examined, as well as the influence of drying the samples under a zero or non-zero magnetic field. It is shown that the anisotropy impacts the shape of the magnetization curves, which then deviate from a pure Langevin behaviour, whereas the dipolar interaction has no influence on the curves at 300 K for small particles (with a radius of 3 nm). The fitting of the magnetization curves of particles with magnetic anisotropy to a Langevin model (including a size distribution of the particles) can then lead to erroneous values of the distribution parameters. The simulation results are qualitatively compared to experimental results obtained for iron oxide nanoparticles (with a 3.21 nm median radius). |

Abstract |
Neodymium nickelate thin films have been prepared on NdGaO3 substrates by RF magnetron sputtering and post-annealing treatment under oxygen pressure. Transport properties are found to depend strongly on film thickness. Thick films show transport properties close to bulk ceramics, while very thin films exhibit a large transition from metal to insulator which occurs over a wide temperature range with high resistivity. Structure and surface morphology of the films have been investigated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Thin films (approximate to17 nm) grow heteroepitaxially, while thicker films (approximate to73 nm) show a granular structure. The thinnest sample suggests a symmetry change induced by the epitaxial strain of the substrate. This paper discusses the relationship between microstructure and transport properties. |

Abstract |
We report on the observation of self-organized stripe-like structures on the as-grown surface and in the bulk of (Nd,Eu,Gd)Ba2Cu3Oy single crystals. The periodicity of the stripes on the surface lies between 500800 nm. These are possibly the growth steps of the crystal. Transmission electron microscopy investigations revealed stripes of periodicity in the range of 2040 nm in the bulk. From electron back scattered diffraction investigations, no crystallographic misorientation due to the nanostripes has been found. Scanning tunneling spectroscopic experiments revealed nonsuperconducting regions, running along twin directions, which presumably constitute strong pinning sites. |

Abstract |
Unlike other 3d transition metal monoxides (MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO), CuO is found in a low-symmetry distorted monoclinic structure rather than the rocksalt structure. We report here of the growth of ultrathin CuO films on SrTiO3 substrates; scanning transmission electron microscopy was used to show the stabilization of a tetragonal rocksalt structure with an elongated c-axis such that c/a similar to 1.34 and the Cu-O-Cu bond angle similar to 180 degrees, pointing to metastable six-fold coordinated Cu. X-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that the hole at the Cu site for the CuO is localized in 3d(x2-y2) orbital unlike the well-studied monoclinic CuO phase. The experimental confirmation of the tetragonal structure of CuO opens up new avenues to explore electronic and magnetic properties of six-fold coordinated Cu. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014 |

Abstract |
Basic results concerning oxygen ordering in the superconducting compound YBa2Cu3Oz are briefly summarized. It is shown that, at equilibrium, only infinite-chain structures can be stabilized and those models based on hypothetical (and actually nonphysical) screened Coulomb interactions cannot produce stable ground states. It is suggested that diffraction data (neutrons, X-rays, electrons) from oxygen-lean samples are indicative of metastable displacive transformations, and are not directly related to oxygen ordering. |

Abstract |
Single crystals with two different morphologies, black and brown, of C60 with about 12% C70 have been studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Integrated intensities from 8 reflections show that the charge distribution of the C60 cluster is shell-like giving rise to an oscillatory behaviour in the diffracted intensities. From the intensities, the distance between diametrically opposite carbon atoms has been determined to be (7.24 +/- 0.22) angstrom. The thickness of the charge distribution of the shell can be estimated as 3.06 angstrom and the cavity within a C60 cluster to have a diameter of about 4.18 angstrom. The finite longitudinal width of the diffraction peaks from black crystals indicates a lack of long-range crystalline order. The rocking curves are about 7-degrees broad and depict an unusually smooth behaviour. This may be indicative of a glassy or hexatic phase. High-resolution electron microscopy allows small crystallites with a relatively well-defined orientation relationship to be identified. In contrast, brown crystals have long-range order. |

Abstract |
The recent experimental realization of electron vortex beams opens up a wide research domain previously unexplored. The present paper explores the relativistic properties of these electron vortex beams, and quantifies deviations from the scalar wave theory. It is common in electron optics to use the Schrodinger equation neglecting spin. The present paper investigates the role of spin and the total angular momentum J(z) and how it pertains to the vortex states. As an application, we also investigate if it is possible to use holographic reconstruction to create novel total angular momentum eigenstates in a transmission electron microscope. It is demonstrated that relativistic spin coupling effects disappear in the paraxial limit, and spin effects in holographically created electron vortex beams can only be exploited by using specialized magnetic apertures. |

Abstract |
Cubic as well as hexagonal single crystals of C70 have been grown and investigated by electron diffraction, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Several phase transitions have been detected and crystallographic models are proposed. Hexagonal crystals, stable at room temperature with c/a = 1.63 will undergo two transitions, upon cooling. First the c/a ratio will increase to 1.82 owing to c-axis allignment of the molecules; at a lower temperature the molecules will orientationally order, resulting in a monoclinic structure. |

Abstract |
Nanoparticle assemblies have attracted enormous scientific interest during the last
years, due to their unique properties compared to those of their building blocks. To understand
the origin of these properties and to establish the connection with their structure, a detailed and
quantitative structural characterization is essential. Transmission electron microscopy has been
widely used to investigate nano-assemblies. However, TEM images only correspond to a twodimensional
projection of a three-dimensional object. Therefore, in order to obtain the necessary
3D structural information electron tomography has to be applied. By means of advanced electron
tomography, both qualitative and quantitative information can be obtained, which can be used
for detailed theoretical studies. |

Abstract |
Metastable orthorhombic SrIrO3 (SIO) is an arch-type spin-orbit coupled material. We demonstrate here a controlled growth of relatively thick (200 nm) SIO films that transform from bulk “6H-type” structure with monoclinic distortion to an orthorhombic lattice by controlling growth temperature. Extensive studies based on high-resolution X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy infer a two distinct structural phases of SIO. Electrical transport reveals a weak temperature-dependent semi-metallic character for both phases. However, the temperature-dependent Hall-coefficient for the orthorhombic SIO exhibits a prominent sign change, suggesting a multiband character in the vicinity of E-F. Our findings thus unravel the subtle structure-property relation in SIO epitaxial thin films. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2018 |

Abstract |
Three series of poly(butylene succinate) (PBSu) nanocomposites containing 0.5, 1 and 2.5 wt% strontium hydroxyapatite [Sr-5(PO4)(3)OH] nanorods (SrHAp nrds) were prepared by in situ polymerisation. The structural effects of Sr-5(PO4)(3)OH nanorods, for the different concentrations, inside the polymeric matrix (PBSu), were studied through high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). HAADF-STEM measurements revealed that the SrHAp nanorods at low concentrations are dispersed inside the polymeric PBSu matrix while in 1 wt% some aggregates are formed. These aggregations affect the mechanical properties giving an enhancement for the concentration of 0.5 wt% SrHAp nrds in tensile strength, while a reduction is recorded for higher loadings of the nanofiller. Studies on enzymatic hydrolysis revealed that all nanocomposites present higher hydrolysis rates than neat PBSu, indicating that nanorods accelerate the hydrolysis degradation process. In vitro bioactivity tests prove that SrHAp nrds promote the formation of hydroxyapatite on the PBSu surface. All nanocomposites were tested also in relevant cell culture using osteoblast-like cells (MG-63) to demonstrate their biocompatibility showing SrHAp nanorods support cell attachment. |

Abstract |
Multicomponent nanoparticles are of particular interest due to a unique combination of properties at the nanoscale, which make them suitable for a wide variety of applications. Among them, Janus nanoparticles, presenting two distinct surface regions, can lead to specific interactions with interfaces, biomolecules, membranes etc. We report the synthesis of Janus nanoparticles comprising iron oxide nanospheres and gold nanostars, through two consecutive seed-mediated-growth steps. Electron tomography combining HAADF-STEM and EDX mapping has been performed to evaluate the spatial distribution of the two components of the nanoparticle, showing their clear separation in a Janus morphology. Additionally, SERS measurements assisted by magnetic separation were carried out to assess the application of combined plasmonic and magnetic properties for sensing. |

Abstract |
The dithiol functionalized UiO-66-(SH)(2) is developed as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of mercury in aqueous media. Important parameters for the application of MOFs in real-life circumstances include: stability and recyclability of the adsorbents, selectivity for the targeted Hg species in the presence of much higher concentrations of interfering species, and ability to purify wastewater below international environmental limits within a short time. We show that UiO-66-(SH)(2) meets all these criteria. |
