Abstract |
Numerical simulations of flow and pollutant dispersion in urban environments have the potential to support design and policy decisions that could reduce the population's exposure to air pollution. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations are a common modeling technique for urban flow and dispersion, but several sources of uncertainty in the simulations can affect the accuracy of the results. The present study proposes a method to quantify the uncertainty related to variability in the inflow boundary conditions. The method is applied to predict flow and pollutant dispersion in downtown Oklahoma City and the results are compared to field measurements available from the Joint Urban 2003 measurement campaign. Three uncertain parameters that define the inflow profiles for velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation are defined: the velocity magnitude and direction, and the terrain roughness length. The uncertain parameter space is defined based on the available measurement data, and a non-intrusive propagation approach that employs 729 simulations is used to quantify the uncertainty in the simulation output. A variance based sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the most influential uncertain parameters, and it is shown that the predicted tracer concentrations are influenced by all three uncertain variables. Subsequently, we specify different probability distributions for the uncertain inflow variables based on the available measurement data and calculate the corresponding means and 95% confidence intervals for comparison with the field measurements at 35 locations in downtown Oklahoma City. Abstract |
The microstructural characteristics of two polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) films with different electrical properties produced by low-pressure chemical vapour deposition on top of high resistivity silicon substrates were investigated by advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM), including high resolution aberration corrected TEM and automated crystallographic orientation mapping in TEM. The results reveal that the nature of the poly-Si film/Si substrate interface is the main factor controlling the electrical resistivity of the poly-Si films. The high resistivity and high electrical linearity of poly-Si films are strongly promoted by the Sigma 3 twin type character of the poly-Si/Si substrate interface, leading to the generation of a huge amount of extended defects including stacking faults, Sigma 3 twin boundaries as well as Sigma 9 grain boundaries at this interface. Furthermore, a high density of interfacial dislocations has been observed at numerous common and more exotic grain boundaries deviating from their standard crystallographic planes. In contrast, poly-Si film/Si substrate interfaces with random character do not favour the formation of such complex patterns of defects, leading to poor electrical resistivity of the poly-Si film. This finding opens windows for the development of high resistivity silicon substrates for Radio Frequency (RF) integrated circuits (ICs) applications. |

Abstract |
First results on the imaging of intact metalorganic framework (MOF) pores in MOF-5 nanocrystals by aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM) under liquid nitrogen conditions are presented. The applied technique is certainly transferable to other MOF systems, permitting detailed studies of MOF interfaces, MOFnanoparticle interaction and MOF thin films. |

Abstract |
Lithium-rich oxides are a promising class of positive electrode materials for next generation lithium-ion batteries, and oxygen plays a prominent role during electrochemical cycling either by forming peroxo-like species and/or by irreversibly forming oxygen gas during first charge. Here, we present Li-Fe-Te-O materials which show a tremendous amount of oxygen gas release. This oxygen release accounts for nearly all the capacity during the first charge and results in vacancies as seen by transmission electron microscopy. There is no oxidation of either metal during charge but significant changes in their environments. These changes are particularly extreme for tellurium. XRD and neutron powder diffraction both show limited Changes during cycling and no appreciable change in lattice parameters. A density functional theory study of this material is performed and demonstrates that the holes created on some of the oxygen atoms upon oxidation are partially stabilized through the formation of shorter O-O bonds, i.e. (O-2)(n-) species which on further delithiation show a spontaneous O-2 de-coordination from the cationic network and migration to the now empty lithium layer. The rate limiting step during charge is undoubtedly the diffusion of oxygen either out along the lithium layer or via columns of oxygen atoms. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract |
The design of high-strength martensitic stainless steels requires an accurate control over the stability of undesired phases, like carbides and ferrite, which can hamper strength and ductility. Here, the ferrite to austenite transformation in Fe-11Cr-0.06C has been studied with a combined experimental-modelling approach. Experimental observations of the austenization process indicate that austenite growth proceeds in multiple steps, each one characterized by a different transformation rate. DICTRA based modelling reveals that the dissolution of the M23C6 Cr-rich carbides leads to Cr partitioning between austenite and parent phases, which controls the rate of transformation through (i) a soft-impingement effect and (ii) consequent stabilization of the ferrite, which remains untransformed inside chromium-enriched-zones even after prolonged austenization stage. Slow heating rate and smaller initial particle sizes allow the design of ferrite-free microstructure. |

Abstract |
The demand of a full solid-state cooling technology based on magnetocaloric and thermoelectric effects has led to a growing interest in screening candidate materials with high-efficiency cooling performance, which also stimulates the exploration of magnetocaloric/thermoelectric hybrid cooling materials. A series of Gd/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 composites was fabricated in order to develop the hybrid cooling technology. The chemical composition, phase structure and diffusion kinetics across the reaction layers in Gd/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 composites were analyzed at different reaction temperatures. Micro-area elemental analysis indicates that the formation of interfacial phases is dominated by the diffusion of Gd and Te while the diffusion of Bi and Sb is impeded. The interfacial phases, including GdTe2, GdTe3, and intermediate phases GdTex, are identified by atomic-resolution electron microscopy. The concentration modulation of Gd and Te is adapted by altering the stacking of the Te square-net sheets and the corrugated GdTe sheets. Boltzmann-Marano analysis was applied to reveal the diffusion kinetics of Gd and Te in the interfacial layers. The diffusion coefficients of Te in GdTe2 and GdTe3 are much higher than that of Gd while in GdTe the situation is reversed. This study provides a clear picture to understand the interfacial phase structures down to an atomic scale as well as the interfacial diffusion kinetics in Gd/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 hybrid cooling materials. |

Abstract |
It is very challenging to measure the chemical composition of hetero nanostructures in a reliable and quantitative manner. Here, we propose a novel and straightforward approach that can be used to quantify energy dispersive X-ray spectra acquired in a transmission electron microscope. Our method is based on a combination of electron tomography and the so-called ζ-factor technique. We will demonstrate the reliability of our approach as well as its applicability by investigating Au-Ag and Au-Pt hetero nanostructures. Given its simplicity, we expect that the method could become a new standard in the field of chemical characterization using electron microscopy. |

Abstract |
Nanometer sized (Ti,Mo,Cr)C (MX-type) precipitates that grew in a 24% cold worked Ti-stabilized austenitic stainless steel (grade DIN 1.4970, member of the 15-15Ti austenitic stainless steels) after heat treatment were fully characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), probe corrected high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-HAADF STEM), and atom probe tomography (APT). The precipitates shared the cube-on-cube orientation with the matrix and were facetted on {111} planes, yielding octahedral and elongated octahedral shapes. The misfit dislocations were believed to have Burgers vectors a/6<112> which was verified by geometrical phase analysis (GPA) strain mapping of a matrix-precipitate interface. The dislocations were spaced five to seven atomic
planes apart, on average slightly wider than expected for the lattice parameters of steel and TiC. Quantitative atom probe tomography analysis of the precipitates showed that precipitates were significantly enriched in Mo, Cr and V, and that they were hypostoichiometric with respect to C. These findings were consistent with a reduced lattice parameter. The precipitates were found primarily on Shockley
partial dislocations originating from the original perfect dislocation network. These novel findings could contribute to the understanding of how TiC nanoprecipitates interact with point defects and matrix dislocations. This is essential for the application of these Ti-stabilized steels in high temperature environments or fast spectrum nuclear fission reactors. |

Abstract |
The double phosphate Ca9In(PO4)(7) was obtained by solid-state reaction and was studied by room and high-temperature Xray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, second-harmonic generation (SHG) technique, differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric and conductivity measurements. The beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) room-temperature phase is related to the mineral whitlockite and is similar to beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2). It has space group R (3) over barc, with unit cell parameters: a = 10.4008(1) Angstrom, c = 37.272(1) Angstrom, Z = 6. The structure was refined by the Rietveld method (R-wp = 4.69, R-I = 1.81). A reversible first-order beta <----> beta' phase transition of the ferroelectric type with T-c = 902 K is revealed by SHG, differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric measurements. The centrosymmetric beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) (973 K) has space group R (3) over barc, a = 10.4611(2) Angstrom, c = 37.874 (1) Angstrom (R-wp = 4.27, R-I = 4.11). Compared to the low-temperature beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) structure, beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) can be described as an orientational disordering of the P1O(4) tetrahedra together with a calcium disordering on the M3 site. Abstract |
Nanocorrugation of 2D crystals is an important phenomenon since it affects their electronic and mechanical properties. The corrugation may have various sources; one of them is flexural phonons that, in particular, are responsible for the thermal conductivity of graphene. A study of corrugation of just the suspended graphene can reveal much of valuable information on the physics of this complicated phenomenon. At the same time, the suspended crystal nanorelief can hardly be measured directly because of high flexibility of the 2D crystal. Moreover, the relief portion related to rapid out-of-plane oscillations (flexural phonons) is also inaccessible by such measurements. Here we present a technique for measuring the Fourier components of the height-height correlation function H(q) of suspended graphene which includes the effect of flexural phonons. The technique is based on the analysis of electron diffraction patterns. The H(q) is measured in the range of wavevectors q approximately 0.4-4.5nm(-1). At the upper limit of this range H(q) does follow the T/kappaq(4) law. So, we measured the value of suspended graphene bending rigidity kappa=1.2+/-0.4eV at ambient temperature T approximately 300K. At intermediate wave vectors, H(q) follows a slightly weaker exponent than theoretically predicted q(-3.15) but is closer to the results of the molecular dynamics simulation. At low wave vectors, the dependence becomes even weaker, which may be a sign of influence of charge carriers on the dynamics of undulations longer than 10nm. The technique presented can be used for studying physics of flexural phonons in other 2D materials. |

Abstract |
In order to increase the production rate during selective laser melting (SLM), a high power laser with a large beam diameter is used to build fully dense Hastelloy X parts. Compared to SLM with a low power and small diameter beam, the productivity was increased from 6 mm3/s to 16 mm3/s, i.e. 2.6 times faster. Besides the productivity benefit, the influence of the use of a high power laser on the rapid solidification microstructure and concomitant material properties is highlighted. The current paper compares the microstructure and tensile properties of Hastelloy X built with low and high power lasers. The use of a high power laser results in wider and shallower melt pools inducing an enhanced morphological and crystallographic texture along the building direction (BD). In addition, the increased heat input results in coarser sub-grains or high density dislocation walls for samples processed with a high power laser. Additionally, the influence of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) as a post-processing technique was evaluated. After HIP, the tensile fracture strain increased as compared to the strain in the as-built state and helped in obtaining competitive mechanical properties as compared to conventionally processed Hastelloy X parts. |

Abstract |
When dealing with Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) simulations, commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) acquires a strategic resonance. Thanks to its good compromise between accuracy of results and calculation time, RANS still represents a valid alternative to more resource-demanding methods. However, focusing on the models' performances in urban studies, LES generally outmatches RANS results, even if the former is at least one order of magnitude more expensive. Consequently, the present work aims to propose a variety of approaches meant to solve some of the major problems linked to RANS simulations and to further improve its accuracy in typical urban contexts. All of these models are capable of switching from an undisturbed flux formulation to a disturbed one through a local deviation or a marker function. For undisturbed flows, a comprehensive approach is adopted, solving the issue of the erroneous stream-wise gradients affecting the turbulent profiles. Around obstacles, Non-Linear Eddy-Viscosity closures are adopted, due to their prominent capability in capturing the anisotropy of turbulence. The purpose of this work is then to propose a new Building Influence Area concept and to offer more affordable alternatives to LES simulations without sacrificing a good grade of accuracy. |

Abstract |
The orientation relationship of an austenite-to-ferrite phase transformation in 316L stainless steels induced by the loss of austenite stabilizers resulting from the steel dissolution corrosion in liquid Pb-Bi eutectic was studied by means of electron backscatter diffraction. The misorientations at the austenite/ferrite interface were compared to the prevailing orientation relationship models in steels. The Pitsch orientation relationship model was found to be predominant, which is unusual for austenite-to-ferrite bulk transformations in steels. The nature of this particular transformation, which involves loss of steel alloying elements and the presence of an interfacial liquid metal layer, is discussed to explain this finding. Abstract |
Zeogrids and Zeotiles are hierarchical materials built from assembled MFI zeolite precursor units. Permanent secondary porosity in these materials is obtained through self assembly of nanoparticles encountered in MFI zeolite synthesis in the presence of supramolecular templates. Hereon, the aggregated species are termed nanoslabs. Zeogrids are layered materials with lateral spacings between nanoslabs creating galleries qualifying as supermicropores. Zeotiles present a diversity of tridimensional nanoslab assemblies with mesopores. Zeotile-1, -4 and -6 are hexagonal mesostructures. Zeotile-1 has triangular and hexagonal channels; Zeotile-4 has hexagonal channels interconnected via slits. Zeotile-2 has a cubic structure with gyroid type mesoporosity. The behavior of Zeogrids and Zeotiles in adsorption, membrane and chromatographic separation and catalysis has been characterized and compared with zeolites and mesoporous materials derived from unstructured silica sources. Shape selectivity was detected via adsorption of n- and iso-alkanes. The mesoporosity of Zeotiles can be exploited in chromatographic separation of biomolecules. Zeotiles present attractive separation properties relevant to CO2 sequestration. Because of its facile synthesis procedure without hydrothermal steps Zeogrid is convenient for membrane synthesis. The performance of Zeogrid membrane in gas separation, nanofiltration and pervaporation is reported. In the Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime Zeogrids and Zeotiles display a catalytic activity characteristic of silicalite-1 zeolites. Introduction of acidity and redox catalytic activity can be achieved via incorporation of Al and Ti atoms in the nanoslabs during synthesis. Zeogrids are active in hydrocracking, catalytic cracking, alkylation and epoxidation reactions. Zeogrids and Zeotiles often behave differently from ordered mesoporous materials as well as from zeolites and present a valuable extension of the family of hierarchical silicate based materials. |

Abstract |
A new version of the open source program MULTEM is presented here. It includes a graphical user interface, tapering truncation of the atomic potential, CPU multithreading functionality, single/double precision calculations, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) simulations using experimental detector sensitivities, imaging STEM (ISTEM) simulations, energy filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) simulations, STEM electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) simulations along with other improvements in the algorithms. We also present a mixed channeling approach for the calculation of inelastic excitations, which allows one to considerably speed up time consuming EFTEM/STEM-EELS calculations. |

Abstract |
The three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in a porous Ni50.8Ti49.2 alloy has been re-constructed by “Slice-and-View” in a Focused Ion Beam/Scanning Electron Microscope (FIB/SEM). The 3D configuration of these precipitates forming a network structure in the B2 austenite matrix has been characterized via 3D visualization and quantitative analysis including volume fraction, skeleton, degree of anisotropy and local thickness. It is found that dense Ni4Ti3 precipitates occupy 54% of the volume in the B2 austenite matrix. Parallel Ni4Ti3 precipitates grow alongside the surface of a micro-pore, yielding an asymmetric structure, while nano voids do not seem to affect the growth of Ni4Ti3 precipitates. The small average local thickness of the precipitates around 60 nm allows their coherency with the matrix, and further induces the R-phase transformation in the matrix. On the other hand, the B2 matrix exhibits a winding and narrow structure with a skeleton of 18.20 mm and a thickness similar to the precipitates. This discontinuous matrix segmented by the Ni4Ti3 network and pores is responsible for the gradual transformation by stalling the martensite propagation. |

Abstract |
High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of organic crystals, such as Lead Phthalocyanine (PbPc), is very challenging since these materials are prone to electron beam damage leading to the breakdown of the crystal structure during investigation. Quantification of the damage is imperative to enable high-resolution imaging of PbPc crystals with minimum structural changes. In this work, we performed a detailed electron diffraction study to quantitatively measure degradation of PbPc crystals upon electron beam irradiation. Our study is based on the quantification of the fading intensity of the spots in the electron diffraction patterns. At various incident dose rates (e/Å2/s) and acceleration voltages, we experimentally extracted the decay rate (1/s), which directly correlates with the rate of beam damage. In this manner, a value for the critical dose (e/Å2) could be determined, which can be used as a measure to quantify beam damage. Using the same methodology, we explored the influence of cryogenic temperatures, graphene TEM substrates, and graphene encapsulation in prolonging the lifetime of the PbPc crystal structure during TEM investigation. The knowledge obtained by diffraction experiments is then translated to real space high-resolution TEM imaging of PbPc. |
