Abstract |
Electrochemical oscillations accompanying the formation of anodic silica have been shown in the past to be correlated with rather abrupt changes in the mechanical stress state of the silica film, commonly associated with some kind of fracture or porosification of the oxide. To advance the understanding on the origin of such oscillations in fluoride-free electrolytes, we have revisited a seminal experiment reported by Lehmann almost two decades ago. We thereby demonstrate that the oscillations are not stress-induced, and do not originate from a morphological transformation of the oxide in the course of anodisation. Alternatively, the mechanical features accompanying the oscillations can be explained by a partial relaxation of the field-induced electrostrictive stress. Furthermore, our observations suggest that the oscillation mechanism more likely results from a periodic depolarisation of the anodic silica. |

Abstract |
Recently developed beta-metastable Ti grades take advantage of the simultaneous activation of TRIP and TWIP effects for enhancing their work hardening rate. However, the role of each plasticity mechanism on the macroscopic mechanical response is still unclear. In this work, the nucleation mechanism of the first activated plasticity mechanism, namely {112} < 111 > twinning, was investigated. Firstly, post-mortem TEM analysis showed that twins nucleate on pre-existing microstructural defects such as thermal jogs with the zonal dislocation mechanism. The precipitation of the omega phase on twin boundaries has been observed, as well as the emission of numerous dislocations from super-jogs present in these twin boundaries. It is also shown that {112} < 111 > twins act as effective dislocation sources for the subsequent plasticity mechanisms such as beta -> alpha '' martensitic transformation and {332} < 111 > twinning. Secondly, in situ TEM tensile testing of the investigated Ti grade highlighted the primary role of the initial defect configuration present in the microstructure. It is shown that twins cannot nucleate without the presence of specific defects allowing the triggering of the dislocation decomposition needed for the twinning mechanism highlighted in investigated bulk samples. |

Abstract |
Although it is well known that FeMnC TWIP steels exhibit high work-hardening rates, the elementary twinning mechanisms controlling the plastic deformation of these steels have still not been characterized. The aim of the present study is to analyse the extended defects related to the twinning occurrence using transmission electron microscopy. Based on these observations, the very early stage of twin nucleation can be attributed to the pole mechanism with deviation proposed by Cohen and Weertman or to the model of Miura, Takamura and Narita, while the twin growth is controlled by the pole mechanism proposed by Venables. High densities of sessile Frank dislocations are observed within the twins at the early stage of deformation, which can affect the growth and the stability of the twins, but also the strength of these twins and their interactions with the gliding dislocations present in the matrix. This experimental evidence is discussed and compared to recent results in order to relate the defects analysis to the macroscopic behaviour of this category of material. |

Abstract |
In this paper, we report atomic scale observations and formation mechanisms of a high-density of antiphase boundaries (APBs) within an ultra-fine-grained Fe4Al13 intermetallic layer at an Al/steel interface after a heat treatment at 596 degrees C. The results reveal that the APBs are formed by nucleation and the glide of partial dislocations with Burgers vector of b/3[010] (b = 12.47 angstrom). The intensive activation of APBs locally transforms the Fe4Al13 structure from the quasicrystal approximant structure to a quasicrystal. Very few stacking faults and nanotwins are observed indicating that the formation of planar defects is mainly driven by this transformation. This new insight on the formation of high density of APBs could possibly lead to an improvement in toughness by increasing the strength/ductility balance of this intermetallic. |

Abstract |
Intragranular amorphization shear lamellae are found in deformed olivine aggregates. The detailed trans-mission electron microscopy analysis of intragranular lamella arrested in the core of a grain provides novel information on the amorphization mechanism. The deformation field is complex and heteroge-neous, corresponding to a shear crack type instability involving mode I, II and III loading components. The formation and propagation of the amorphous lamella is accompanied by the formation of crystal defects ahead of the tip. These defects are geometrically necessary [001] dislocations, characteristics of high-stress deformation in olivine, and rotational nanodomains which are tentatively interpreted as disclinations. We show that these defects play an important role in dictating the path followed by the amorphous lamella. Stress-induced amorphization in olivine would thus result from a direct crystal-to -amorphous transformation associated with a shear instability and not from a mechanical destabilization due to the accumulation of high number of defects from an intense preliminary deformation. The pref-erential alignment of some lamellae along (010) is a proof of the lower ultimate mechanical strength of these planes.(c) 2022 The Authors. Abstract |
In this paper we review the work related to amorphization under mechanical stress. Beyond pressure, we highlight the role of deviatoric or shear stresses. We show that the most recent works make amorphization appear as a deformation mechanism in its own right, in particular under extreme conditions (shocks, deformations under high stresses, high strain-rates). |

Abstract |
A novel class of nanostructured Zr50Cu50 (%at.) metallic glass films with superior and tunable mechanical
properties is produced by pulsed laser deposition. The process can be controlled to synthetize a wide
range of film microstructures including dense fully amorphous, amorphous embedded with nanocrystals
and amorphous nano-granular. A unique dense self-assembled nano-laminated atomic arrangement
characterized by alternating Cu-rich and Zr/O-rich nanolayers with different local chemical enrichment
and amorphous or amorphous-crystalline composite nanostructure has been discovered, while
significant in-plane clustering is reported for films synthetized at high deposition pressures. This unique
nanoarchitecture is at the basis of superior mechanical properties including large hardness and elastic
modulus up to 10 and 140 GPa, respectively and outstanding total elongation to failure (>9%), leading to
excellent strength/ductility balance, which can be tuned by playing with the film architecture. These
results pave the way to the synthesis of novel class of engineered nanostructured metallic glass films
with high structural performances attractive for a number of applications in microelectronics and
coating industry. |

Abstract |
When strained in tension, high-manganese austenitic twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) steels achieve very high strength and elongation before necking. The main hypotheses available in the literature about the origin of their excellent work hardening include deformation twinning and dynamic strain ageing. In order to provide some answers, various experiments at different scales were conducted on FeMnC steels and the Fe28 wt%Mn3.5 wt%Al2.8 wt%Si alloy. At a macroscopic scale, tensile tests were performed on all the studied grades. It was shown that, though the FeMnAlSi based alloy retains very high elongation, the FeMnC steels properties are even more extraordinary. Tensile tests at different strain rates with the help of digital image correlation were also performed on the Fe20 wt%Mn1.2 wt%C steel to study the PLC effect occurring in this type of steel. It is suggested that supplementary hardening could come from reorientation of MnC pairs in the cores of the dislocations. At a microscopic scale, the Fe20 wt%Mn1.2 wt%C TWIP steel and the FeMnAlSi grade were thoroughly investigated by means of in situ TEM analysis. In the FeMnC steel, the formed twins could also lead to a composite effect, since they contain plenty of sessile dislocations. In the FeMnAlSi alloy, mechanical twins are thicker and contain fewer defects, leading to a lower work hardening than the other grade. |

Abstract |
A systematic study has been carried out to compare the surface morphology, shell thickness, mechanical properties, and binding behavior of melamine–formaldehyde microcapsules of 5–30 μm diameter size with various amounts of core content by using scanning and transmission electron microscopy including electron tomography, in situ nanomechanical tensile testing, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. It is found that porosities are present on the outside surface of the capsule shell, but not on the inner surface of the shell. Nanomechanical tensile tests on the capsule shells reveal that Young’s modulus of the shell material is higher than that of bulk melamine–formaldehyde and that the shells exhibit a larger fracture strain compared with the bulk. Core-loss elemental analysis of microcapsules embedded in epoxy indicates that during the curing process, the microcapsule-matrix interface remains uniform and the epoxy matrix penetrates into the surface micro-porosities of the capsule shells. |

Abstract |
A single crystal of Cu74.08Al23.13Be2.79 undergoes a martensitic phase transition at 246 and 232 K under heating and cooling, respectively. The phase fronts between the austenite and martensite regions of the sample are weakly mobile with a power-law resonance under external stress fields. Surprisingly, the martensite phase is elastically much harder than the austenite phase showing that interfaces between various crystallographic variants are strongly pinned and cannot be moved by external stress while the phase boundary between the austenite and martensite regions in the sample remains mobile. This unusual behavior was studied by dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. The remnant strain, storage modulus, and internal friction were recorded simultaneously for different applied forces in DMA. With increasing forces, the remnant strain increases monotonously while the internal friction peak height shows a minimum at 300 mN. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the pinning is generated by dislocations which are inherited from the austenite phase. |

Abstract |
The determination of the mechanical properties of porous amorphous Al2O3 thin films is essential to address reliability issues in wear-resistant, optical and electronic coating applications. Testing the mechanical properties of Al2O3 films thinner than 200 nm is challenging, and the link between the mechanical behavior and the microstructure of such films is largely unknown. Herein, we report on the elastic and viscoplastic mechanical properties of amorphous Al2O3 thin films synthesized by reactive magnetron sputtering using a combination of internal stress, nanoindentation, and on-chip uniaxial tensile testing, together with mechanical homogenization models to separate the effect of porosity from intrinsic variations of the response of the sound material. The porosity is made of voids with 2e30 nm diameter. The Young's modulus and hardness of the films decrease by a factor of two when the deposition pressure increases from 1.2 to 8 mTorr. The contribution of porosity was found to be small, and a change in the atomic structure of the amorphous Al2O3 matrix is hypothesized to be the main contributing factor. The activation volume associated to the viscoplastic deformation mechanism is around 100 Å3. Differences in the atomic structure of the films could not be revealed by electron diffraction, pointing to a minute effect of atomic arrangement on the elastic properties. |

Abstract |
The rheology of the lithospheric mantle is fundamental to understanding how mantle convection couples with plate tectonics. However, olivine rheology at lithospheric conditions is still poorly understood because experiments are difficult in this temperature range where rocks and mineral become very brittle. We combine techniques of quantitative in situ tensile testing in a transmission electron microscope and numerical modeling of dislocation dynamics to constrain the low-temperature rheology of olivine. We find that the intrinsic ductility of olivine at low temperature is significantly lower than previously reported values, which were obtained under strain-hardened conditions. Using this method, we can anchor rheological laws determined at higher temperature and can provide a better constraint on intermediate temperatures relevant for the lithosphere. More generally, we demonstrate the possibility of characterizing the mechanical properties of specimens, which can be available in the form of submillimeter-sized particles only. |

Abstract |
By changing the testing temperature, an austenitic FeMnAlSi alloy presents either å-martensite transformation or mechanical twinning during straining. In order to understand the nucleation and growth mechanisms involved in both phenomena, defects and particularly stacking faults, were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. It is observed that the character of the stacking faults also changes (from extrinsic to intrinsic) together with the temperature and the activated mode of plasticity. |

Abstract |
Previous reports on Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) simulations of solid-state nanopores have focused on steady state behaviour under simplified boundary conditions. These are Neumann boundary conditions for the voltage at the pore walls, and in some cases also Donnan equilibrium boundary conditions for concentrations and voltages at both entrances of the nanopore. In this paper, we report time-dependent and steady state PNP simulations under less restrictive boundary conditions, including Neumann boundary conditions applied throughout the membrane relatively far away from the nanopore. We simulated ion currents through cylindrical and conical nanopores with several surface charge configurations, studying the spatial and temporal dependence of the currents contributed by each ion species. This revealed that, due to slow co-diffusion of oppositely charged ions, steady state is generally not reached in simulations or in practice. Furthermore, it is shown that ion concentration polarization is responsible for the observed limiting conductances and ion current rectification in nanopores with asymmetric surface charges or shapes. Hence, after more than a decade of collective research attempting to understand the nature of ion current rectification in solid-state nanopores, a relatively intuitive model is retrieved. Moreover, we measured and simulated current-voltage characteristics of rectifying silicon nitride nanopores presenting overlimiting conductances. The similarity between measurement and simulation shows that overlimiting conductances can result from the increased conductance of the electric double-layer at the membrane surface at the depletion side due to voltage-induced polarization charges. |

Abstract |
The design of high-strength martensitic stainless steels requires an accurate control over the stability of undesired phases, like carbides and ferrite, which can hamper strength and ductility. Here, the ferrite to austenite transformation in Fe-11Cr-0.06C has been studied with a combined experimental-modelling approach. Experimental observations of the austenization process indicate that austenite growth proceeds in multiple steps, each one characterized by a different transformation rate. DICTRA based modelling reveals that the dissolution of the M23C6 Cr-rich carbides leads to Cr partitioning between austenite and parent phases, which controls the rate of transformation through (i) a soft-impingement effect and (ii) consequent stabilization of the ferrite, which remains untransformed inside chromium-enriched-zones even after prolonged austenization stage. Slow heating rate and smaller initial particle sizes allow the design of ferrite-free microstructure. |

Abstract |
The possible role of a prior amorphous phase separation on the subsequent crystallization has been the topic of vigorous debates over the last decades and has not yet been clarified, especially regarding the role of the interfaces created by the phase separation. This study proposes to focus on the interplay between a prior amorphous phase separation and the crystallization of fresnoite in the BaO-TiO2-SiO2 system. The crystallization behavior of a non-stoichiometric composition inside the miscibility gap (called APS) is compared with the stoichiometric composition (called FRES) and a non-stoichiometric composition outside the miscibility gap (called NoAPS). The crystallization mechanisms are compared using differential thermal analysis (DTA) by calculating the Avrami parameters and the activation energies as a function of the particle size. The DTA study shows that the two non-stoichiometric compositions exhibit a pronounced surface crystallization behavior whereas FRES undergoes bulk nucleation. This is supported by a multi-scale microstructure characterization. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the amorphous phase separation and the associated interfaces do not play any significant role in the nucleation step. Moreover, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and local orientation measurements show that the growth of the dendrites is not hindered by the SiO2-rich droplets. The final stage of crystallization of APS is tentatively explained by two composition effects that must be further investigated: the viscosity effect and the formation of a eutectic. Abstract |
The determination of the mechanical properties of serpentinites is essential toward the understanding of the mechanics of faulting and subduction. Here we present the first in situ tensile tests on antigorite in a transmission electron microscope. A push‐to‐pull deformation device is used to perform quantitative tensile tests, during which force and displacement are measured, while the evolving microstructure is imaged with the microscope. The experiments have been performed at room temperature on 2 × 1 × 0.2 μm3 beams prepared by focused ion beam. The specimens are not single crystals despite their small sizes. Orientation mapping indicated that several grains were well oriented for plastic slip. However, no dislocation activity has been observed even though the engineering tensile stress went up to 700 MPa. We show also that antigorite does not exhibit a purely elastic‐brittle behavior since, despite the presence of defects, the specimens accumulate permanent deformation and did not fail within the elastic regime. Instead, we observe that strain localizes at grain boundaries. All observations concur to show that under these experimental conditions, grain boundary sliding is the dominant deformation mechanism. This study sheds a new light on the mechanical properties of antigorite and calls for further studies on the structure and properties of grain boundaries in antigorite and more generally in phyllosilicates. |

Abstract |
Motivated by recent studies demonstrating a high strength – high ductility potential of nano-scale metallic glass samples, the mechanical response of freestanding Zr65Ni35 film with sub-micron thickness has been investigated by combining advanced on-chip tensile testing and electron microscopy. Large deformation up to 15% is found for specimen thicknesses below 500 nm with variations depending on specimen size and frame compliance. The deformation is homogenous until fracture, with no evidence of shear banding. The yield stress is doubled when decreasing the specimen cross-section, reaching ~3 GPa for small cross-sections. The fracture strain variation is related to both the stability of the test device and to the specimen size. The study concludes on clear disconnect between the mechanisms controlling the onset of plasticity and the fracture process. |

Abstract |
Extensive use of titanium alloys is partly hindered by a lack of ductility, strain hardening, and fracture toughness. Recently, several beta -metastable titanium alloys were designed to simultaneously activate both transformation-induced plasticity and twinning-induced plasticity effects, resulting in significant improvements to their strain hardening capacity and resistance to plastic localization. Here, we report an ultra-large fracture resistance in a Ti-12Mo alloy (wt.%), that results from a high resistance to damage nucleation, with an unexpected fracture phenomenology under quasi-static loading. Necking develops at a large uniform true strain of 0.3 while fracture initiates at a true fracture strain of 1.0 by intense through-thickness shear within a thin localized shear band. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that dynamic recrystallization occurs in this band, while local partial melting is observed on the fracture surface. Shear band temperatures of 1250-2450 degrees C are estimated by the fusible coating method. The reported high ductility combined to the unconventional fracture process opens alternative avenues toward Ti alloys toughening. Specific titanium alloys combine transformation-induced plasticity and twinning-induced plasticity for improved work hardening. Here, the authors show that these alloys also have an ultra-large fracture resistance and an unexpected fracture mechanism via dynamic recrystallization and local melting in a deformation band. |

Abstract |
The mechanical behaviour of thin nanocrystalline palladium films with an ∼30 nm in plane grain size has been characterized on chip under uniaxial tension. The films exhibit a large strain hardening capacity and a significant increase in the strength with decreasing thickness. Transmission electron microscopy has revealed the presence of a moderate density of growth nanotwins interacting with dislocations. A semi-analytical grain aggregate model is proposed to investigate the impact of different contributions to the flow behaviour, involving the effect of twins, of grain size and of the presence of a thin surface layer. This model provides guidelines to optimizing the strength/ductility ratio of the films. |

Abstract |
Sputtered nanocrystalline palladium thin films with nanoscale growth twins have been subjected to hydriding cycles. The evolution of the twin boundaries has been investigated using high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Surprisingly, the Sigma 3{112} incoherent twin boundaries dissociate after hydriding into two phase boundaries bounding a 9R phase. This phase which corresponds to single stacking faults located every three {111} planes in the fcc Pd structure was not expected because of the high stacking fault energy of Pd. This observation is connected to the influence of the Hydrogen on the stacking fault energy of palladium and the high compressive stresses building up during hydriding. Abstract |
In the framework of metal matrix composites, a research gap exists regarding tailoring damage mechanisms. The present work aims at developing an Al/NiTi composite incorporating internal stresses in the vicinity of reinforcements. The composite is manufactured by friction stir processing which allows a homogenous NiTi distribution and a good Al/NiTi interface bonding. The internal stresses are introduced via shape memory effect of the embedded NiTi particles. The induced internal strain field is confirmed by digital image correlation and the corresponding stress field is evaluated by finite element simulation. It is found that the damage mechanism is modified in the presence of internal stresses. The consequent enhancement of fracture toughness arises by the fact that the internal stresses foster discrete damages shifted from the fracture ligament line. These damages release the stress concentration at the main crack tip and lead to a deviated crack path when coalescing to accommodate fracture propagation. |

Abstract |
The toughness of Al-to-steel welds decreases with increasing thickness of the intermetallic (IM) layer formed at the interface. Co plating has been added as interlayer in Al-to-steel Friction Melt Bonded (FMB) welds to control the nature and thickness of the IM layer. In comparison to a weld without interlayer, Co plating brings about a reduction of the thickness of the IM layer by 70%. The critical energy release rate of the crack propagating in the weld is used as an indicator of toughness. It is evaluated via an adapted crack propagation test using an energy conservation criterion. For a weld without interlayer, critical energy release rate is found to increase when the thickness of the intermetallic layer decreases. When the intermetallic layer is thick, the crack propagates in a brittle manner through the intermetallic whereas, at low layer thickness, the crack deviates and partially propagates through the Al plate, which causes an increase of toughness. The use of a Co interlayer brings about an increase of toughness by causing full deviation of the crack towards the Al plate. |

Abstract |
Although largely studied, contradictory results on nickel oxide (NiO) properties can be found in the literature. We herein propose a comprehensive study that aims at leveling contradictions related to NiO materials with a focus on its conductivity, surface properties, and the intrinsic charge defects compensation mechanism with regards to the conditions preparation. The experiments were performed by in situ photo-electron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and optical as well as electrical measurements on polycrystalline NiO thin films prepared under various preparation conditions by reactive sputtering. The results show that surface and bulk properties were strongly related to the deposition temperature with in particular the observation of Fermi level pinning, high work function, and unstable oxygen-rich grain boundaries for the thin films produced at room temperature but not at high temperature (>200 degrees C). Finally, this study provides substantial information about surface and bulk NiO properties enabling to unveil the origin of the high electrical conductivity of room temperature NiO thin films and also for supporting a general electronic charge compensation mechanism of intrinsic defects according to the deposition temperature. |

Abstract |
While the microstructure of a metal is well-known to affect its equilibrium hydrogen uptake and therefore the hydriding thermodynamics, microstructural effects on the hydriding kinetics are much less documented. Moreover, for thin film systems, such microstructural effects are difficult to separate from the internal stress effect, since most defects generate internal stresses. Such a decoupling has been achieved in this paper for nanocrystalline Pd thin film model systems through the use of a high-resolution, in-situ curvature measurement set-up during Pd deposition, annealing and hydriding. This set-up allowed producing Pd thin films with similar internal stress levels but significantly different microstructures. This was evidenced from detailed defect statistics obtained by transmission electron microscopy, which showed that the densities of grain boundaries, dislocations and twin boundaries have all been lowered by annealing. The same set-up was then used to study the hydriding equilibrium and kinetic behaviour of the resulting films at room temperature. A full quantitative analysis of their hydriding cycles showed that the rate constants of both the adsorption- and absorption-limited kinetic regimes were strongly affected by microstructure. Defect engineering was thereby shown to increase the rate constants for hydrogen adsorption and absorption in Pd by a factor 40 and 30, respectively. Abstract |
Efforts to improve the cell efficiency of hydrogen production by water electrolysis continue to address the electrochemical kinetics of the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions in detail. The objective of this work is to study a parasitic reaction occurring during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), namely the absorption of hydrogen atoms into the bulk electrode. Effects of the electrode microstructure and internal stress on this reaction have been addressed as well in this paper. Ni thin film samples were deposited on a Si substrate by sputter deposition with different deposition pressures, resulting in different microstructures and varying levels of internal stress. These microstructures were first analyzed in detail by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Cathodic chrono-amperometric measurements and cyclic voltammetries have then been performed in a homemade electrochemical cell. These tests were coupled to a multi-beam optical sensor (MOS) in order to obtain in-situ curvature measurements during hydrogen absorption. Indeed, since hydrogen absorption in the thin film geometry results in a constrained volume expansion, internal stress generation during HER can be monitored by means of curvature measurements. Our results show that different levels of internal stress, grain size and twin boundary density can be obtained by varying the deposition parameters. From an electrochemical point of view, this paper highlights the fact that the electrochemical surface mechanisms during HER are the same for all the electrodes, regardless of their microstructure. However it is shown that the absolute amount of hydrogen being absorbed into the Ni thin films increases when the grain size is reduced, due to a higher grain boundaries density which are favourite absorption sites for hydrogen. At the same time, it was concluded that H-2 evolution is favoured at electrodes having a more compressive (i.e. a less tensile) internal stress. Finally, the subtle effect of microstructure on the hydrogen absorption rate will be discussed as well. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Nanoindentation tests performed on nanocrystalline palladium films subjected to hydriding/dehydriding cycles demonstrate a significant softening when compared to the as-received material. The origin of this softening is unraveled by combining in situ TEM nanomechanical testing with automated crystal orientation mapping in TEM and high resolution TEM. The softening is attributed to the presence of a high density of stacking faults and of Shockley partial dislocations after hydrogen loading. The hydrogen induced defects affect the elementary plasticity mechanisms and the mechanical response by acting as preferential sites for twinning/detwinning during deformation. These results are analyzed and compared to previous experimental and simulation works in the literature. This study provides new insights into the effect of hydrogen on the atomistic deformation and cracking mechanisms as well as on the mechanical properties of nanocrystalline thin films and membranes. |

Abstract |
The influence of the deposition rate on the formation of growth twins in nanocrystalline Pd films deposited by electron beam evaporation is investigated using transmission electron microscopy. Statistical measurements prove that twin boundary (TB) density and volume fraction of grains containing twins increase with increasing deposition rate. A clear increase of the dislocation density was observed for the highest deposition rate of 5 Å/s, caused by the increase of the internal stress building up during deposition. Based on crystallographic orientation indexation using transmission electron microscopy, it can be concluded that a {111} crystallographic texture increases with increasing deposition rate even though the {101} crystallographic texture remains dominant. Most of the TBs are fully coherent without any residual dislocations. However, for the highest deposition rate (5 Å/s), the coherency of the TBs decreases significantly as a result of the interaction of lattice dislocations emitted during deposition with the growth TBs. The analysis of the grain boundary character of different Pd films shows that an increasing fraction of high angle grain boundaries with misorientation angles around 5565° leads to a higher potential for twin formation. |

Abstract |
Binary ZrCu nanocomposite amorphous films are synthetized by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) under vac-uum (2 x 10-3 Pa) and 10 Pa He pressure, leading to fully amorphous compact and nanogranular mor-phologies, respectively. Then, post-thermal annealing treatments are carried out to explore thermal stability and crystallization phenomena together with the evolution of mechanical properties. Compact films exhibit larger thermal stability with partial crystallization phenomena starting at 420 degrees C, still to be completed at 550 degrees C, while nanogranular films exhibit early-stage crystallization at 300 degrees C and com-pleted at 485 degrees C. The microstructural differences are related to a distinct evolution of mechanical |
