Abstract |
Iron carbides play a crucial role in steel manufacturing and processing and to a large extent determine the physical properties of steel products. The modified embedded atom method (MEAM) in combination with Lee's Fe-C potential is a good candidate for molecular dynamics simulations on larger Fe-C systems. Here, we investigate the stability and crystal structures of pure iron and binary iron carbides using MEAM and compare them with the experimental data and quantum-mechanical density functional theory calculations. The analysis shows that the Fe-C potential gives reasonable results for the relative stability of iron and iron carbides. The performance of MEAM for the prediction of the potential energy and the calculated lattice parameters at elevated temperature for pure iron phases and cementite are investigated as well. The conclusion is that Lee's MEAM Fe-C potential provides a promising basis for further molecular dynamics simulations of Fe-C alloys and steels at lower temperatures (up to 800 K). |

Abstract |
Neutral excitons in strained axially symmetric In(Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots with a ringlike shape are investigated. Similar to experimental self-assembled quantum rings, the analyzed quantum dots have volcano-like shapes. The continuum mechanical model is employed to determine the strain distribution, and the single-band envelope function approach is adopted to compute the electron states. The hole states are determined by the axially symmetric multiband Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian, and the exciton states are obtained from an exact diagonalization. We found that the presence of the inner layer covering the ring opening enhances the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations. The reason is that the hole becomes mainly localized in the inner part of the quantum dot due to strain, whereas the electron resides mainly inside the ring-shaped rim. Interestingly, larger AB oscillations are found in the analyzed quantum dot than in a fully opened quantum ring of the same width. Comparison with the unstrained ringlike quantum dot shows that the amplitude of the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are almost doubled in the presence of strain. The computed oscillations of the exciton energy levels are comparable in magnitude to the oscillations measured in recent experiments. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.085314 |

Abstract |
Using time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we study the dynamic properties of a rectangular superconducting loop, which are found to depend on the position of the current leads. For asymmetric positioning of the leads, different kinetic inductance of the two paths for injected electric current leads to different critical conditions in the two branches. System self-regulates by allowing vortex entry, as vortex currents bring equilibration between the two current flows and the conventional resistive state can be realized. We also demonstrate that individual vortex entry in the loop can be detected by measuring the voltage between normal-metal leads, for applied currents comparable in magnitude to the screening currents. |

Abstract |
We theoretically demonstrate that the transport inefficiency recently found experimentally for branched-out mesoscopic networks can also be observed in a quantum ring of finite width with an attached central horizontal branch. This is done by investigating the time evolution of an electron wave packet in such a system. Our numerical results show that the conductivity of the ring does not necessary improve if one adds an extra channel. This ensures that there exists a quantum analog of the Braess paradox, originating from quantum scattering and interference. |

Abstract |
The thermal signatures of superconductivity in mesoscopic disks, rings and cylinders are calculated within the Ginzburg-Landau theory. In an applied perpendicular magnetic field H the heat capacity of mesoscopic samples shows a strong dependence on the realized vortex state; discontinuities are found at the critical field for different vorticities, as well as at the superconducting-to-normal state transition. The same applies to the intermediate state of type-I superconductors. Even the subtle changes in the fluxoid distribution inside the sample leave clear signatures on heat capacity, which is particularly useful for fully three-dimensional samples whose interior is often inaccessible by magnetometry. The heat-capacity jump ΔC(H) at the critical temperature exhibits quasiperiodic modulations as a function of magnetic field. In mesoscopic superconducting rings, these oscillations provide calorimetric verification of the Little-Parks effect. |

Abstract |
The control of side gates on the quantum electron transport in narrow graphene ribbons of different widths and edge types (armchair and zigzag) is investigated. The conductance exhibits Fano resonances with varying side gate potential. Resonant and antiresonant peaks in the conductance can be associated with the eigenstates of a closed system, and these peaks can be accurately fitted with a Fano line shape. The local density of states (LDOS) and the electron current show a specific behavior at these resonances, which depends on the ribbon edge type. In zigzag ribbons, transport is dominated by intervalley scattering, which is reflected in the transmission functions of individual modes. The side gates induce p-n interfaces near the edges at which the LDOS exhibits peaks. Near the resonance points, the electron current flows uniformly through the constriction, while near the antiresonances it creates vortices. In the armchair ribbons the LDOS spreads in areas of high potential, with current flowing near the edges. |

Abstract |
We report on the crystal structure and magnetism of the iron-based oxyfluoride Bi4Fe5O13F, a material prototype of the Cairo pentagonal spin lattice. The crystal structure of Bi4Fe5O13F is determined by a combination of neutron diffraction, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. It comprises layers of FeO6 octahedra and FeO4 tetrahedra forming deformed pentagonal units. The topology of these layers resembles a pentagonal least-perimeter tiling, which is known as the Cairo lattice. This topology gives rise to frustrated exchange couplings and underlies a sequence of magnetic transitions at T-1 = 62 K, T-2 = 71 K, and T-N = 178 K, as determined by thermodynamic measurements and neutron diffraction. Below T-1, Bi4Fe5O13F forms a fully ordered non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure, whereas the magnetic state between T-1 and T-N may be partially disordered according to the sizable increase in the magnetic entropy at T-1 and T-2. Bi4Fe5O13F reveals unanticipated magnetic transitions on the pentagonal Cairo spin lattice and calls for a further work on finite-temperature properties of this strongly frustrated spin model. Abstract |
We compare the magnetic properties of Co cluster assembled films with different degrees of oxidation. Clusters with grain size (2.3 +/- 0.7) nm are produced in a laser vaporization cluster source and soft-landed in ultrahigh vacuum conditions, forming highly porous nanogranular films. After exposure to air for different periods of time, the Co clusters oxidize and the sample may be considered as a thin antiferromagnetic Co oxide matrix containing ferromagnetic Co clusters. Magnetization measurements were performed in a temperature range from 300 down to 5 K, at applied magnetic fields up to 30 kOe. The exchange bias value at 5 K for the strongly oxidized sample is 4.8 kOe against the value of 0.75 kOe for the less oxidized sample. The mean values of the thicknesses of the Co oxide layers are estimated to be 0.6 and 0.3 nm for the more and less oxidized sample, respectively. We propose a method of measuring the exchange bias inducing temperature, i.e., the temperature at which exchange anisotropy is established. We determined the mean inducing temperatures for both samples, which are 55 and 25 K, respectively, for the more and less oxidized samples. Both temperatures are well below the bulk CoO Neel temperature of 292 K. A low value of the inducing temperature of the Co oxide layer is a consequence of its subnanometer thickness, while a large exchange bias value is a consequence of different dimensionality of Co clusters and Co oxide matrix. |

Abstract |
A computational method is presented for angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) and photoelectron diffraction (PED) in the ultraviolet regime. The one-step model is employed and both initial valence and final continuum states are calculated using the finite-cluster, real-space multiple scattering method. Thereby the approach is versatile and provides a natural link to core-level PED. The method is applied to the Cu(111) valence band and good agreement with experiment is found for both ARPES spectra and PED patterns. When the PED patterns are integrated over a filled band of a single-orbital symmetry, such as Cu-3d, we show, both numerically and analytically, that the exact theory with delocalized initial states can be replaced by the much simpler, core-level-type theory where the initial states are taken as localized. |

Abstract |
Using density functional theory, we study the electronic properties of a graphene-silicene bilayer (GSB). A single layer of silicene binds to the graphene layer with adhesion energy of about 25 meV/atom. This adhesion energy between the two layers follows accurately the well-known -1/z(2) dispersion energy as found between two infinite parallel plates. In small flakes of GSB with hydrogenated edges, negative charge is transferred from the graphene layer to the silicene layer, producing a permanent and a switchable polar bilayer, while in an infinite GSB, the negative charge is transferred from the silicene layer to the graphene layer. The graphene-silicene bilayer is a good candidate for a nanocapacitor with piezoelectric capabilities. We found that the permanent dipole of the bilayer can be tuned by an external perpendicular electric field. |

Abstract |
The effect of substitutional doping of fluorographene with boron and nitrogen atoms on its electronic and magnetic properties is investigated using first-principles calculations. It is found that boron dopants can be readily incorporated in the fluorographene crystal where they act as shallow acceptors and cause hole doping, but no changes in the magnetic properties are observed. Nitrogen dopants act as deep donors and give rise to a magnetic moment, but the resulting system becomes chemically unstable. These results are opposite to what was found for substitutional doping of graphane, i.e., hydrogenated graphene, in which case B substituents induce magnetism and N dopants do not. |

Abstract |
We present a mean-field description of the zigzag phase transition of a quasi-one-dimensional system of strongly interacting particles, with interaction potential r−ne−r/λ, that are confined by a power-law potential (yα). The parameters of the resulting one-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau theory are determined analytically for different values of α and n. Close to the transition point for the zigzag phase transition, the scaling behavior of the order parameter is determined. For α=2, the zigzag transition from a single to a double chain is of second order, while for α>2, the one-chain configuration is always unstable and, for α<2, the one-chain ordered state becomes unstable at a certain critical density, resulting in jumps of single particles out of the chain. |

Abstract |
The dynamics of fullerene-cubane (C60⋅C8H8) cocrystal is studied combining experimental [x-ray diffuse scattering, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS)] and simulation (molecular dynamics) investigations. Neutron scattering gives direct evidence of the free rotation of fullerenes and of the libration of cubanes in the high-temperature phase, validating the rotor-stator description of this molecular system. X-ray diffuse scattering shows that orientational disorder survives the order/disorder transition in the low-temperature phase, although the loss of fullerene isotropic rotational diffusion is featured by the appearance of a 2.2 meV mode in the INS spectra. The coupling between INS and simulations allows identifying a degeneracy lift of the cubane librations in the low temperature phase, which is used as a tool for probing the environment of cubane in this phase and for getting further insights into the phase transition mechanism. |

Abstract |
A data-acquisition and data-processing method is proposed that aims at minimizing the effect of retardation on the Kramers-Kronig analysis of valence electron energy-loss spectra. This method is applied to diamond, which, due to its high dielectric constant, is a material that shows strong retardation effects and thus is a challenging material to be studied by valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The results obtained show a significant improvement but still show small discrepancies with respect to optical data, which are most likely due to the residual retardation contributions and the fact that nonzero momentum transfers are measured. |

Abstract |
We investigate the magnetic interface states of graphene quantum dots that contain p-n junctions. Within a tight-binding approach, we consider rectangular quantum dots in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field containing p-n as well as p-n-p and n-p-n junctions. The results show the interplay between the edge states associated with the zigzag terminations of the sample and the snake states that arise at the p-n junction due to the overlap between electron and hole states at the potential interface. Remarkable localized states are found at the crossing of the p-n junction with the zigzag edge having a dumb-bell-shaped electron distribution. The results are presented as a function of the junction parameters and the applied magnetic flux. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.035426 |
