Abstract |
The effect of electron-impurity and electron-electron interactions on the energy spectrum of electrons moving in graphene is investigated in the presence of a high magnetic field. We find that the width of the broadened Landau levels exhibits an approximate 1/B dependence near half filling for charged impurity scattering. The Landau-level width, the density of states, and the Fermi energy exhibit an oscillatory behavior as a function of magnetic field. Comparison with experiment shows that scattering with charged impurities cannot be the main scattering mechanism that determines the width of the Landau levels. |

Abstract |
The electronic spectrum of three coupled graphene layers (graphene trilayers) is investigated in the presence of an external magnetic field. We obtain analytical expressions for the Landau level spectrum for both the ABA and ABC type of stacking, which exhibit very different dependence on the magnetic field. We show that layer asymmetry and an external gate voltage can strongly influence the properties of the system. |

Abstract |
The dynamics of fullerene-cubane (C60⋅C8H8) cocrystal is studied combining experimental [x-ray diffuse scattering, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS)] and simulation (molecular dynamics) investigations. Neutron scattering gives direct evidence of the free rotation of fullerenes and of the libration of cubanes in the high-temperature phase, validating the rotor-stator description of this molecular system. X-ray diffuse scattering shows that orientational disorder survives the order/disorder transition in the low-temperature phase, although the loss of fullerene isotropic rotational diffusion is featured by the appearance of a 2.2 meV mode in the INS spectra. The coupling between INS and simulations allows identifying a degeneracy lift of the cubane librations in the low temperature phase, which is used as a tool for probing the environment of cubane in this phase and for getting further insights into the phase transition mechanism. |

Abstract |
Using atomistic simulations, we determine the roughness and the thermal properties of a suspended graphane sheet. As compared to graphene, we found that (i) hydrogenated graphene has a larger thermal contraction, (ii) the roughness exponent at room temperature is smaller, i.e., ≃ 1.0 versus ≃ 1.2 for graphene, (iii) the wavelengths of the induced ripples in graphane cover a wide range corresponding to length scales in the range 30125 Å at room temperature, and (iv) the heat capacity of graphane is estimated to be 29.32±0.23 J/mol K, which is 14.8% larger than that for graphene, i.e., 24.98±0.14 J/mol K. Above 1500 K, we found that graphane buckles when its edges are supported in the x-y plane. |

Abstract |
A new Tl-doped strontium ferrite Fe2(Sr2-Tl)Sr3Fe4O14.65, with an original structure, has been synthesized and structurally characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The TGA and Mssbauer studies evidence a mixed valence of iron. The structure exhibits a commensurate modulation, with a F-type subcell a ≈ b ≈ 5.4 Å (≈ ap√2), c ≈ 42 Å with a modulation vector q = αa* with α = 0.4. The supercell parameters have been refined as a= 27.1101(8) Å, b= 5.5187(2) Å and c= 42.0513(9) Å, in the space group Fmmm. The electron diffraction and electron microscopy data of this novel ferrite show that it can be described as a FeTl-2234-type structure corresponding to the intergrowth of a quadruple perovskite slice [(SrFeO2.8)4], with a complex rock salt related slice [Fe2(Sr2-Tl)O3.4]∞, built up of one double iron layer [Fe2O2.4] sandwiched between two [SrO] layers. The HRTEM images show that the oxygen atoms and vacancies are randomly distributed in the perovskite layers while the HAADF STEM images evidence the absence of Tl segregation in the matrix. Fe2(Sr2-Tl)Sr3Fe4O14.65 exhibits a very large value of χ (11emu/mol) at 5 K, which remains large at 400 K; the M(H) loop presents a shape characteristic of ferrimagnetism, with a large coercive field of 0.3 T. The value of magnetization saturates at 400 K at 0.68 μB/Fe. At 10 K, the value of magnetization reaches a maximum of 2 μB/Fe. The resistivity presents a semiconducting-like behavior, with ρ 800 Ω·cm at 300 K. |

Abstract |
New layered structures corresponding to the general formula [PbBiO2]A(n+1)B(n)O(3n-1)Cl(2) Were prepared. Pb5BiFe3O10Cl2 (n = 3) and Pb5Bi2Fe4O13Cl2 (n = 4) are built as a stacking of truncated A(n+1)B(n)O(3n-1) perovskite blocks and alpha-PbO-type [A(2)O(2)](2+) (A = Pb, Bi) blocks combined with chlorine sheets. The alternation of these structural blocks can be represented as an intergrowth between the hematophanite and Sullen-type structural blocks. The crystal and-Magnetic structures of Pb5BiFe3O10Cl2 and Pb5Bi2Fe4O13Cl2 were investigated in the temperature range of 1.5-700 K using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy. Both compounds crystallize in the I4/mmm space group with the unit cell parameters a approximate to a(p) approximate to 3.92 angstrom (a unit-cell parameter of the perovskite-structure), c approximate to 43.0 angstrom for the n = 3 member and c approximate to 53.5 angstrom for the n = 4 member. Despite the large separation between the slabs containing the Fe3+ ions (nearly 14 angstrom), long-range antiferromagnetic order sets in below similar to 600 K with the G-type arrangement of the Fe magnetic moments aligned along the c-axis. The possibility of mixing d(0) and d(n) cations at the B sublattice of these structures was also demonstrated by preparing the Ti-substituted n = 4 member Pb6BiFe3TiO13Cl2. |

Abstract |
NiTi is one of the most popular shape-memory alloys, a phenomenon resulting from a martensitic transformation. Commercial NiTi-based alloys are often thermally treated to contain Ni4Ti3 precipitates. The presence of these precipitates can introduce an extra transformation step related to the so-called R-phase. It is believed that the strain field surrounding the precipitates, caused by the matrixprecipitate lattice mismatch, lies at the origin of this intermediate transformation step. Atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy in combination with geometrical phase analysis is used to measure the elastic strain field surrounding these precipitates. By combining measurements from two different crystallographic directions, the three-dimensional strain matrix is determined from two-dimensional measurements. Comparison of the measured strain matrix to the eigenstrain of the R-phase shows that both are very similar and that the introduction of the R-phase might indeed compensate the elastic strain introduced by the precipitate. |

Abstract |
The structure of Bi0.81Pb0.19FeO2.905 was investigated on different length scales using a combination of electron diffraction, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. In the 80300 K temperature range, the average crystal structure of Bi0.81Pb0.19FeO2.905 is a cubic Pm3̅m perovskite with a = 3.95368(3) Å at T = 300 K. The (Pb2+, Bi3+) cations and O2 anions are randomly displaced along the 110 cubic directions, indicating the steric activity of the lone pair on the Pb2+ and Bi3+ cations and a tilting distortion of the perovskite framework. The charge imbalance induced by the heterovalent Bi3+ → Pb2+ substitution is compensated by the formation of oxygen vacancies preserving the trivalent state of the Fe cations. On a short scale, oxygen vacancies are located in anion-deficient (FeO1.25) layers that are approximately 6 perovskite unit cells apart and transform every sixth layer of the FeO6 octahedra into a layer with a 1:1 mixture of corner-sharing FeO4 tetrahedra and FeO5 tetragonal pyramids. The anion-deficient layers act as twin planes for the octahedral tilting pattern of adjacent perovskite blocks. They effectively randomize the octahedral tilting and prevent the cooperative distortion of the perovskite framework. The disorder in the anion sublattice impedes cooperative interactions of the local dipoles induced by the off-center displacements of the Pb and Bi cations. Magnetic susceptibility measurements evidence the antiferromagnetic ordering in Bi0.81Pb0.19FeO2.905 at low temperatures. |

Abstract |
We propose that low-strain Si/O superlattices can be constructed by connecting reconstructed Si{001} surfaces by Si-O-Si bridges. Ab initio calculations show that our models are energetically more favorable than all the models proposed so far. The part of our Si/O superlattice model is experimentally accessible just by oxidizing a Si( 001) substrate. To complete our Si/O superlattice model, we propose a three-step method. We also explore the potential of our Si/O superlattice models for new materials used in future Si electronics. We find that the location of the channel where the carriers travel can be controlled between the interfaces and the Si layers by the insertion of O atoms into the Si-Si dimers. By revealing the origins of the interface electron and hole states, we find that similar interface states should be easily achieved for Si slabs and Si substrates. Interestingly, the interface electrons and holes have small effective masses in the direction parallel to the channel and large effective masses in the direction normal to the channel, which makes the Si/O superlattices attractive to be used for channel materials. We also find that the valley splitting of Si is enhanced by the formation of the Si/O/Si interfaces, which is ideal for developing Si-based qubits. Our findings open new perspectives to design and control the electronic properties of Si. |

Abstract |
Using time-differential perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy we have measured the electric field gradient (EFG) at 111Cd probe nuclei in solid Ce in a pressure range up to 8 GPa. Covering various allotropic phases of Ce, we find that the value of the EFG in the cubic α phase is almost four times larger than in the cubic γ phase and close to values in the noncubic phases α′ and α″. These results together with the differences in time modulation of the spectra are interpreted as evidence for quadrupolar electronic charge-density ordering and symmetry lowering at the γ→α transition while the lattice remains face-centered cubic |

Abstract |
Here, we show successful partial cation exchange reactions in Cu2-xS nanocrystals (NCs) yielding luminescent CuInS2 (CIS) NCs. Our approach of mild reaction conditions ensures slow Cu extraction rates, which results in a balance with the slow In incorporation rate. With this method, we obtain CIS NCs with photoluminescence (PL) far in the near-infrared (NIR), which cannot be directly synthesized by currently available synthesis protocols. We discuss the factors that favor partial, self-limited cation exchange from Cu2-xS to CIS NCs, rather than complete cation exchange to In2S3. The product CIS NCs have the wurtzite crystal structure, which is understood in terms of conservation of the hexagonal close packing of the anionic sublattice of the parent NCs into the product NCs. These results are an important step toward the design of CIS NCs with sizes and shapes that are not attainable by direct synthesis protocols and may thus impact a number of potential applications. |

Abstract |
We study magnetic flux interacting with arrays of pinning sites (APSs) placed on vertices of hyperbolic tesselations (HTs). We show that, due to the gradient in the density of pinning sites, HT APSs are capable of trapping vortices for a broad range of applied magnetic fluxes. Thus, the penetration of magnetic field in HT APSs is essentially different from the usual scenario predicted by the Bean model. We demonstrate that, due to the enhanced asymmetry of the surface barrier for vortex entry and exit, this HT APS could be used as a “capacitor” to store magnetic flux. |

Abstract |
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of the most promising nanomaterials to be used in biomedicine for drug/gene delivery as well as biomedical imaging. This study develops radio-labeled, iron oxide-decorated multiwalled CNTs (MWNTs) as dual magnetic resonance (MR) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) contrast agents. Hybrids containing different amounts of iron oxide are synthesized by in situ generation. Physicochemical characterisations reveal the presence of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) granted the magnetic properties of the hybrids. Further comprehensive examinations including high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), fast Fourier transform simulations, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy assure the conformation of prepared SPION as γ-Fe2O3. High r2 relaxivities are obtained in both phantom and in vivo MRI compared to the clinically approved SPION Endorem. The hybrids are successfully radio labeled with technetium-99m through a functionalized bisphosphonate and enable SPECT/CT imaging and γ-scintigraphy to quantitatively analyze the biodistribution in mice. No abnormality is found by histological examination and the presence of SPION and MWNT are identified by Perls stain and Neutral Red stain, respectively. TEM images of liver and spleen tissues show the co-localization of SPION and MWNTs within the same intracellular vesicles, indicating the in vivo stability of the hybrids after intravenous injection. The results demonstrate the capability of the present SPIONMWNT hybrids as dual MRI and SPECT contrast agents for in vivo use. |

Abstract |
We study an exciton in a type-II quantum dot, where the electron is confined in the dot, but the hole is located in the barrier material. The exciton properties are studied as a function of a perpendicular magnetic field using a Hartree-Fock mesh calculation. Our model system consists of a planar quantum disk. Angular momentum (l) transitions are predicted with increasing magnetic field. We, also study the transition from a type-I to a type-H quantum dot which is induced by changing the confinement potential of the hole. For sufficiently large magnetic fields a reentrant behavior is found from l(h) = 0 to l(h) not equal 0 and back to l(h) = 0, which results in a transition from type II to type I. |

Abstract |
The electronic properties of monolayer phosphorene are exotic due to its puckered structure and large intrinsic direct band gap. We derive and discuss its band structure in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Further, we evaluate the magneto-optical Hall and longitudinal optical conductivities as functions of temperature, magnetic field, and Fermi energy, and show that they are strongly influenced by the magnetic field. The imaginary part of the former and the real part of the latter exhibit regular interband oscillations as functions of the frequency omega in the range (h) over bar omega similar to 1.5-2 eV. Strong intraband responses in the latter and weak ones in the former occur at much lower frequencies. The magneto-optical response can be tuned in the microwave-to-terahertz and visible frequency ranges in contrast with a conventional two-dimensional electron gas or graphene in which the response is limited to the terahertz regime. This ability to isolate carriers in an anisotropic structure may make phosphorene a promising candidate for new optical devices. |
