“The evolution of twin patterns in perthitic K-feldspar from garnitic pegmatites”. Sánchez-Muñoz L, García-Guinea J, Zagorsky VY, Juwono T, Modreski PJ, Cremades A, Van Tendeloo G, de Moura OJM, Canadian mineralogist 50, 989 (2012). http://doi.org/10.3749/canmin.50.4.989
Abstract: Grains of K-feldspar are commonly seen as heterogeneous mixtures of mineral species and varieties with random microstructures. Most consider that observable features arise from incomplete re-equilibrations owing to slow kinetic and localized effects of aqueous fluids (catalyst), with geological environment and chemical impurities playing only a secondary role. Here, an alternative approach is explored by studying well-preserved regularities in the twin patterns of K-feldspars formed in the subsolidus stage from a historical perspective. Selected samples from granitic pegmatites were studied by polarized light optical microscopy (PLOM), electron-probe micro-analysis (EPMA), scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cathodoluminescence imaging (CL), micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS) and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We have found that the essential feature of this crystalline medium is the astounding capability to recrystallize in self-organized twin patterns. The mechanism involves coupling between short-range atomic motion, and long-range displacive correlations propagated as ideal and non-ideal Albite and Pericline orientations. We suggest a general evolutionary process to explain the development of macroscopic twin patterns in microcline, based on three twin generations as microtwins, macrotwins and cryptotwins. Evolutionary variants also were identified; they depend on both internal crystallochemical features and an external geological stimulus. We suggest a continuous monoclinictriclinic transformation for impure K-feldspar, whereas a discontinuous inversion occurs where the starting composition is close to the ideal chemical formula. Twin patterns can evolve by twin coarsening to single-orientation microcline if the system releases energy, or by twin fragmentation to finely twinned microcline if the system stores energy. Hence, K-feldspar is seen here as a very sensitive medium in which precious geological information is recorded in the form of twin patterns, and thus useful for general geological challenges.

Abstract: Wigner molecules formed at high magnetic fields in circular and elliptic quantum dots are studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) methods with multicenter basis of displaced lowest Landau level wave functions. The broken symmetry states with semi-classical charge density constructed from superpositions of the ED solutions are compared to the UHF results. UHF overlooks the dependence of the few-electron wave functions on the actual relative positions of electrons localized in different charge puddles and partially compensates for this neglect by an exaggerated separation of charge islands which are more strongly localized than in the exact broken-symmetry states. Abstract: Quantum mechanical coupling and strain in two vertically arranged InP/InGaP quantum dots is studied as a function of the size of the dots and the spacer thickness. The strain distribution is determined by the continuum mechanical model, while the single-band effective-mass equation and the multiband k (.) p theory are employed to compute the conduction and valence band energy levels, respectively. The exciton states are obtained from an exact diagonalization approach, and we also compute the oscillator strength for recombination. We found that the light holes are confined by strain to the spacer, which is the reason that the hole states exhibit coupling at much larger distances as compared with the electrons. At small d, the doublet structure of the hole energy levels arises as a consequence of the relocation of the light hole from the matrix to the regions located-outside the stack, close to the dot-matrix interface. When d varies, the exciton ground state exhibits numerous anticrossings with other states, which are related to the changing spatial localization of the hole as a function of d. The oscillator strength of the exciton recombination is strongly reduced in a certain range of spacer thicknesses, which effectively turns a bright exciton state into a dark one. This effect is associated with anticrossings between exciton energy levels.

Abstract: The exciton states in a strained (In,Ga)As/GaAs nanocup are theoretically determined. We explore how the nanocup bottom thickness (t) affects the magnetic field dependence of the exciton energy. Strain distribution is computed by the continuum mechanical model under the approximation of isotropic elasticity. The exciton wave functions are expanded into products of the electron and hole envelope functions. For small t, the exciton ground state has zero orbital momentum and exhibits small oscillations of the second derivative when the magnetic field increases. When t approaches the value of the cup height, however, the exciton levels exhibit angular momentum transitions, whose behavior is similar to that for type-II quantum dots. Small oscillations of the oscillator strength for exciton recombination are found when the magnetic field increases. An increase in thickness of the nanocup bottom has only a small effect on those oscillations for the optically active exciton states, but the exciton ground state becomes dark when the magnetic field increases. Hence, the results of our calculations show that an increase in thickness of the nanocup bottom transforms the exciton ground energy level dependence on magnetic field from the one characteristic of type-I rings to the one characteristic of type-II dots.

“Excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect : unstrained versus strained type-I semiconductor nanorings”. Tadić, M, Čukarić, N, Arsoski V, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 84, 125307 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.84.125307
Abstract: We study how mechanical strain affects the magnetic field dependence of the exciton states in type-I semiconductor nanorings. Strain spatially separates the electron and hole in (In,Ga)As/GaAs nanorings which is beneficial for the occurrence of the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect. In narrow strained (In,Ga)As/GaAs nanorings the AB oscillations in the exciton ground-state energy are due to anticrossings with the first excited state. No such AB oscillations are found in unstrained GaAs/(Al,Ga)As nanorings irrespective of the ring width. Our results are obtained within an exact numerical diagonalization scheme and are shown to be accurately described by a two-level model with off-diagonal coupling t. The later transfer integral expresses the Coulomb coupling between states of electron-hole pairs. We also found that the oscillator strength for exciton recombination in (In,Ga)As/GaAs nanorings exhibits AB oscillations, which are superimposed on a linear increase with magnetic field. Our results agree qualitatively with recent experiments on the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect in type-I (In,Ga)As/GaAs nanorings.

Abstract: The tunneling coupling in three vertically stacked (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum rings is investigated. With increasing inter-ring separation (d), we find that the nonuniform strain results into a crossing of the lowest-energy electron states. Strain is also responsible for an increase in the ground electron energy above the level in the single quantum ring. The ground hole energy level exhibits decrease when d decreases, which is typical for antibonding states in an unstrained structure. These effects lead to a local maximum in the dependence of the ground-state exciton energy on d. Our theoretical results compare well with recent photoluminescence measurements but deviate considerably from the calculations for flat bands in quantum-ring molecules. We conclude that the nonuniform character of the strain distribution gives rise to a peculiar exciton hybridization in self-assembled quantum-ring molecules.

Abstract: LiFePO4 has been under intense scrutiny over the past decade because it stands as an attractive positive electrode material for the next generation of Li-ion batteries to power electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles, hence the importance of its thermal behavior. The reactivity of LiFePO4 with air at moderate temperatures is shown to be dependent on its particle size. For nanosized materials, a progressive displacement of Fe from the core structure leading to a composite made of nanosize Fe2O3 and highly defective, oxidized LixFeyPO4 compositions, among which the “ideal” formula LiFe2/3PO4. Herein we report, from both temperature-controlled X-ray diffraction and electronic diffraction microscopy, that these off-stoichiometry olivine-type compounds show a defect ordering resulting in the formation of a superstructure. Such a finding shows striking similarities with the temperature-driven oxidation of fayalite Fe2SiO4 (another olivine) to structurally defective laihunite, reported in the literature three decades ago.

“Exit wave reconstruction from focal series of HRTEM images, single crystal XRD and total energy studies on SbxWO3+y (x\sim0.11)”. Abstract: A new tungsten bronze in the SbWO system has been prepared in a solid state reaction from Sb2O3, WO3 and W metal powder. The average structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. SbxWO3+y (x ∼ 0.11) crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pm21n (no. 31), a = 27.8135(9) Å, b = 7.3659(2) Å and c = 3.8672(1) Å. The structure belongs to the (n)-ITB class of intergrowth tungsten bronzes. It contains slabs of hexagonal channels formed by six WO6 octahedra. These slabs are separated by three layers of WO6 octahedra that are arranged in a WO3-type fashion. The WO6 octahedra share all vertices to build up a three-dimensional framework. The hexagonal channels are filled with Sb atoms to ∼80% and additional O atoms. The atoms are shifted out of the center of the channels. Exit-wave reconstruction of focal series of high resolution-transmission-electron-microscope (HRTEM) images combined with statistical paramäeter estimation techniques allowed to study local ordering in the channels. Sb atoms in neighbouring channels tend to be displaced in the same direction, which is in agreement with total energy calculations on ordered structure models, but the ratio of the occupation of the two possible Sb sites varies from channel to channel. The structure of SbxWO3+y exhibits pronounced local modulations.

Abstract: Expanded graphite decorated with nickel oxide particles (EGNiO) has been synthesized through electrochemical oxidation of natural graphite in an aqueous nickel nitrate solution followed by a heat treatment. EGNiO was used to prepare nickel/carbon composites using two techniques: (a) hydrogen reduction of nickel oxide particles loaded on the expanded graphite surface and (b) pyrolysis of coal tar pitch-impregnated EGNiO blocks. The EGNiO as well as the nickel/carbon composites have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction.

“Expanding the Ruddlesden-Popper manganite family : the n=3 La3.2Ba0.8Mn3O10 Member”. Hadermann J, Abakumov AM, Tsirlin AA, Rozova MG, Sarakinou E, Antipov EV, Inorganic chemistry 51, 11487 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1021/ic301332e
Abstract: La3.2Ba0.8Mn3O10, a representative of the rare n = 3 members of the Ruddlesden-Popper manganites A(n+1)Mn(n)O(3n+1), was synthesized in an evacuated sealed silica tube. Its crystal structure was refined from a combination of powder X-ray diffraction (PXD) and precession electron diffraction (PED) data, with the rotations of the MnO6 octahedra described within the symmetry-adapted mode approach (space group Cccm, a = 29.068(1) angstrom, b = 5.5504(5) angstrom, c = 5.5412(5) angstrom; PXD RF = 0.053, RP = 0.026; PED RF = 0.248). The perovskite block in La3.2Ba0.8Mn3O10 features an octahedral tilting distortion with out-of-phase rotations of the Mn06 octahedra according to the (Phi,Phi,0)(Phi,Phi,0) mode, observed for the first time in the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper structures. The Mn06 octahedra demonstrate a noticeable deformation with the elongation of two apical Mn-O bonds due to the Jahn-Teller effect in the Mn3+ cations. The relationships between the octahedral tilting distortion, the ionic radii of the cations at the A- and B-positions, and the mismatch between the perovslcite and rock-salt blocks of the Ruddlesden-Popper structure are discussed. At low temperatures, La3.2Ba0.8Mn3O10 reveals a sizable remnant magnetization of about 1.3 mu(B)/Mn at 2K, and shows signatures of spin freezing below 150 K.
