Abstract |
Addition of yttrium in HfO(2) thin films prepared on silicon by metal organic chemical vapor deposition is investigated in a wide compositional range (2.0-99.5 at. %). The cubic structure of HfO(2) is stabilized for 6.5 at. %. The permittivity is maximum for yttrium content of 6.5-10 at. %; in this range, the effective permittivity, which results from the contribution of both the cubic phase and silicate phase, is of 22. These films exhibit low leakage current density (5x10(-7) A/cm(2) at -1 V for a 6.4 nm film). The cubic phase is stable upon postdeposition high temperature annealing at 900 degrees C under NH(3). Abstract |
The local structure of Bi4W2/3Mn1/3O8Cl is determined using quantitative transmission electron microscopy. The electron exit wave, which is closely related to the projected crystal potential, is reconstructed and used as a starting point for statistical parameter estimation. This method allows us to refine all atomic positions on a local scale, including those of the light atoms, with a precision in the picometer range. Using this method one is no longer restricted to the information limit of the electron microscope. Our results are in good agreement with x-ray powder diffraction data demonstrating the reliability of the method. Moreover, it will be shown that local effects can be interpreted using this approach. |

Abstract |
A transmission electron microscopy study of epitaxial C-60 and C-70 films grown on a GeS (001) surface is presented. The relationship between the orientation of the substrate and the films and structural defects in the films, such as grain boundaries, unknown in bulk C-60 and C-70 crystals, are studied. Small misalignments of the overlayers with respect to the orientation of the substrate, so-called epitaxial rotations, exist mainly in C-70 films, but also sporadically in the C-60 overlayers. A simple symmetry model, previously used to predict the rotation of hexagonal overlayers on hexagonal substrates, is numerically tested and applied to the present situation. Some qualitative conclusions concerning the substrate-film interaction are deduced. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics. |

Abstract |
The magneto resistive perovskites Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 and Pr0.5Sr0.41Ca0.09MnO3 undergo a transition from anti ferromagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic metal as function of temperature. The room temperature phase is orthorhombic with the space group Imma and the cell parameters a approximate to root 2a(p), b approximate to 2a(p), and c approximate to root 2a(p). A structural phase transition related to charge ordering accompanying the transition from ferromagnetic state to antiferromagnetic state has been evidenced by low temperature electron diffraction. This transition is reversible and a new superstructure, with a P-type orthorhombic cell. and lattice parameters parameters a approximate to 2 root 2a(p), b approximate to 2a(p), and c approximate to root 2a(p), is formed. |

Abstract |
Complex [(La0.7Sr0.3MnO3)(m)(SrTiO3)(n)] [(LSMO)(m)/(STO)(8)](15) superlattices with different layer thicknesses (m=5, 8, 12, 16, 32) have been prepared using pulsed liquid injection metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction reveal a very clear and well-separated layer sequence. The remarkable microstructure, as well as the ferromagnetic transition temperature, depends on the LSMO layer thickness. Apart from a very clear layer sequence, electron microscopy shows evidence of a self-assembled nanostructure formation: SrMnO3 nanoinclusions and associated SrTiO3-SrMnO3 thin walls. A formation model and growth mechanism for the self-assembled structure is proposed, based on high resolution and energy filtered elemental imaging. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics. |

Abstract |
Sr1-xLaxCuO2-delta (x=0.10-0.20) thin films exhibiting an oxygen-deficient 2 root 2a(p)x2 root a(p) x c structure (a(p) and c represent the cell parameters of the perovskite subcell) were epitaxially grown by means of pulsed laser deposition in low-pressure oxygen ambient. (001) KTaO3 and (001) SrTiO3 single crystals were used as substrates, with BaTiO3 as buffer layer. The Sr1-xLaxCuO2-delta films were oxidized during cooling down in order to yield the infinite-layer-type structure. By applying this method, high quality single-phase Sr1-xLaxCuO2 thin films could be obtained for 0.10 <= x <= 0.175 doping range. The films grown on BaTiO3/KTaO3 show superconductivity for 0.15 <= x <= 0.175 with optimum doping at x=0.15, in contrast with previously reported data. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics. |

Abstract |
Electron spin resonance and electronic spectroscopy techniques were used to study the symmetry and electronic structure of Mn2+ dopants in solvothermally synthesized ZnS nanowires. The average diameter of ∼ 5 nm leads to the observable quantum confinement effects in the photoluminescence excitation spectra. The results clearly demonstrate the three symmetry locations of Mn2+ incorporation. Together with the inferred Mn2+ center densities, these data indicate a much higher efficiency of Mn2+ substitution in the nanowire sample with about two times larger diameter. |

Abstract |
We report on one-pot synthesis of various morphologies of CuO nanostructures. PEG200 as a structure directing reagent under the synergism of alkalinity by hydrothermal method has been employed to tailor the morphology of CuO nanostructures. The CuO products have been characterized by XRD, SEM, and TEM. The morphologies of the CuO nanostructures can be tuned from 10 (nanoseeds, nanoribbons) to 2D (nanoleaves) and to 3D (shuttle-like, shrimp-like, and nanoflowers) by changing the volume of PEG200 and the alkalinity in the reaction system. At neutral and relatively low alkalinity (OH-/Cu2+ <= 3), the addition of PEG200 can strongly influence the morphologies of the CuO nanostructures. At high alkalinity (OH/Cu2+ >= 4), PEG200 has no influence on the morphology of the CuO nanostructure. The different morphologies of the CuO nanostructures have been used for the photodecomposition of the pollutant rhodamine B (RhB) in water. The photocatalytic activity has been correlated with the different nanostructures of CuO. The 10 CuO nanoribbons exhibit the best performance on the RhB photodecomposition because of the exposed high surface energy {-121} crystal plane. The photocatalytic results show that the high energy surface planes of the CuO nanostructures mostly affect the photocatalytic activity rather than the morphology of the CuO nanostructures. Our synthesis method also shows it is possible to control the morphologies of nanostructures in a simple way. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
We demonstrate the epitaxial growth of Fe3O4 films on ZnO by a simple reactive deposition procedure using molecular oxygen as an oxidizing agent. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results evidence that the iron-oxide surface is nearly stoichiometric magnetite. X-ray diffraction results indicate monocrystalline epitaxy and almost complete structural relaxation. Scanning transmission electron micrographs reveal that the microstructure consists of domains which are separated by antiphase boundaries or twin boundaries. The magnetite films show rather slow magnetization behavior in comparison with bulk crystals probably due to reduced magnetization at antiphase boundaries in small applied fields. |

Abstract |
Nanoprecipitates in YBa2Cu3O7‐δ(YBCO) thin films have been identified by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM) as Y2O3 inclusions; they correspond to two different types of epitaxial relationships namely [001] or [110] parallel to the YBCOc‐axis. The [001] precipitates are situated near the YBCO surface, in the bulk and on the YBCO film/substrate interface. The [110] precipitates have only been observed at the surface. Literature data have been reinterpreted. |

Abstract |
Single-crystalline MnOOH and Mn3O4 nanowires have been prepared by hydrothermal treatment of commercial bulky manganese oxide particles. beta-MnO2 and alpha-Mn2O3 nanowires were prepared by calcination of MnOOH nanowires. Transmission electron microscopy analysis demonstrates that MnOOH nanowires grow directly from MnO2 raw particles. The diameter of the nanowires is 20-70 nm, while the length can reach several micrometers. MnOOH nanowires grow preferentially along the [010] direction and Mn3O4 nanowires prefer to grow along the [001] direction; the long dimension of both beta-MnO2 and alpha-Mn2O3 nanowires is along [001]. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy analysis shows that the position of the prepeak of the oxygen K edge shifts to higher energy and the energy separation between the two main peaks of the oxygen K edge decreases with decreasing manganese oxidation state. The manganese-white-line ratios (L-3/L-2) were calculated. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics. |

Abstract |
Transmission electron microscopy is used to evaluate different deposition techniques, which optimize the microstructure and physical properties of superconducting thin films. High-resolution electron microscopy proves that the use of an YBa2Cu2Ox buffer layer can avoid a variable interface configuration in YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films grown on SrTiO3. The growth can also be controlled at an atomic level by, using sub-unit cell layer epitaxy, which results in films with high quality and few structural defects. Epitaxial strain in Sr0.85La0.15CuO2 infinite layer thin films influences the critical temperature of these films, as well as the microstructure. Compressive stress is released by a modulated or a twinned microstructure, which eliminates superconductivity. On the other hand, also tensile strain seems to lower the critical temperature of the infinite layer. |

Abstract |
Ultralong Cu(OH)(2) and CuO nanowire bundles with lengths ranging from tens to hundreds of micrometers have been selectively synthesized on a large scale by a facile solution-phase method, using PEG200 as growth-directing agent. The growth mechanisms were investigated by monitoring the nanowire evolution process. The results showed that under the action of PEG200 molecules, the Cu(OH)(2) and CuO nanowires were first formed through oriented attachment of colloidal particles, then through side self-assembly leading to nanowire bundles, and finally to CuO nanoleaves. PEG200 plays a critical role in the synthesis of nanowires as it not only prevents the random aggregation of colloidal particles toward CuO nanoleaves but also helps to orientate nanowire growth by the coalescence and alignment in one direction of the colloidal particles. The concentration of OH(-) in the reaction system is also important for nanowire growth. In the absence of PEG200, nanoleaves are formed by an Ostwald ripening process. The band-gap value estimated from a UV-Vis absorption spectrum of CuO nanowire bundles is 2.32 eV. The photodegradation of a model pollutant, rhodamine B, by CuO nanowires and nanoleaves was compared with commercial nanopowders, showing that the as-synthesized ultralong CuO polycrystalline nanowire bundles have an enhanced photocatalytic activity with 87% decomposition of rhodamine B after an 8-h reaction, which was much higher than that of single-crystal nanoleaves (61%) and commercial nanopowders (32%). The origin of the high photocatalytic activity of these new polycrystalline CuO nanowire bundles has been discussed. This present work reveals that the (0 0 2) crystallographic surface is more favorable for photocatalytic decomposition of organic compounds and that these ultralong CuO nanowire bundles are potential candidates for photocatalysts in wastewater treatment. Abstract |
High-resolution electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy have been used to compare the microstructure of NdBa2Cu3O7-delta and Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta thin films. Both films contain comparable amounts of Nd2CuO4 inclusions. Antiphase boundaries are induced by unit cell high steps at the substrate or by a different interface stacking. In Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta the antiphase boundaries tend to annihilate by the insertion of extra Nd layers. Stacking faults, which can be characterized as local Nd2Ba2Cu4O9 inclusions, also absorb the excess Nd. A correlation is made between the excess Nd and the absence of growth spirals at the surface of the Nd-rich films. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics. |

Abstract |
The current transport capability of YBa2Cu3O7-x(YBCO) based coated conductors (CCs) is mainly limited by two features: the grain boundaries of the used textured template, which are transferred into the superconducting film through the buffer layers, and the ability to pin magnetic flux lines by incorporation of defined defects in the crystal lattice. By adjusting the deposition conditions, it is possible to tailor the pinning landscape in doped YBCO in order to meet specific working conditions (T, B) for CC applications. To study these effects, we deposited YBCO layers with a thickness of about 1-2 mu m using pulsed laser deposition on buffered rolling-assisted biaxially textured Ni-W substrates as well as on metal tapes having either an ion-beam-texturedYSZbuffer or an MgO layer textured by inclined substrate deposition. BaHfO3 and the mixed double-perovskite Ba2Y(Nb/Ta)O-6 were incorporated as artificial pinning centers in these YBCO layers. X-ray diffraction confirmed the epitaxial growth of the superconductor on these templates as well as the biaxially oriented incorporation of the secondary phase additions in the YBCO matrix. A critical current density J(c) of more than 2 MA/cm(2) was achieved at 77 K in self-field for 1-2 mu m thick films. Detailed TEM (transmission electron microscopy) studies revealed that the structure of the secondary phase can be tuned, forming c-axis aligned nanocolumns, ab-oriented platelets, or a combination of both. Transport measurements show that the J(c) anisotropy in magnetic fields is reduced by doping and the peak in the J(c) (theta) curves can be correlated to the microstructural features. |

Abstract |
We present the preparation of a new architecture of coated conductor by Inkjet printing of low fluorine YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) on top of SuperOx tape: CGO/LMO/IBAD-MgO/Y2O3/Al-2 O-3/Hastelloy. A five-layered multideposited, 475-nm-thick YBCO film was structurally and magnetically characterized. A good texture was achieved using this combination of buffer layers, requiring only a 30-nm-thin ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD)-MgO layer. The LF-YBCO CC reaches self-field critical current density values of J(c)(GB) similar to NJ 15.9 MA/cm(2) (5 K), similar to 1.23 MA/cm(2) (77 K) corresponding to an I-c (77 K) = 58.4 A/cm-width. Inkjet printing offers a flexible and cost effective method for YBCO deposition, allowing patterning of structures. |

Abstract |
The critical current I-c(B) of YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) coated conductors can be increased by growing thicker superconductor layers as well as improving the critical current density J(c)(B) by the incorporation of artificial pinning centers. We studied the properties of pulsed laser deposited BaHfO3 (BHO)-doped YBCO films with thicknesses of up to 5 mu m on buffered rolling-assisted biaxially textured Ni-5 at % W tape and alternating beam assisted deposition textured Yttrium-stabilized ZrO2 layers on stainless steel. X-Ray diffraction confirms the epitaxial growth of the superconductor on the buffered metallic template. BHO additions reduce the film porosity and lower the probability to grow misoriented grains, hence preventing the J(c) decrease observed in undoped YBCO films with thicknesses > 2 mu m. Thereby, a continuous increase in I-c at 77 K is achieved. A mixed structure of secondary phase nanorods and platelets with different orientations increases J(c)(B) in the full angular range and simultaneously lowers the J(c) anisotropy compared to pristine YBCO. |

Abstract |
The atomic structure of single-wall carbon nanotube bundles produced by three different techniques has been characterized by electron diffraction and microscopy. Small bundles produced by Catalytical Chemical Vapor Deposition (CCVD) exhibit only one or two tube chiralities within a single bundle while bundles produced by arc-discharge or laser-ablation exhibit more chiralities. A detailed analysis of the central line of diffraction is also presented. The CCVD nanotubes present more intense spots around 1.7 Angstrom(-1) < k < 2Angstrom(-1) (k is the momentum transfer) compared to what is observed for nanotubes produced by other methods. Amongst the possible explanation for such an anomaly, we put forward that in this range of momentum transfer, the relative tube orientations and translations are important for what concerns the interpretation of the diffraction peaks intensities. |
