Abstract: Laser-induced plasmas are transient systems rapidly aging in few nanoseconds of evolution. Time-of-flight spectrometry allowed studying initial plasma characteristics based on frozen translational degrees of freedom, hence overcoming intrinsic limitations of optical spectroscopy. Experimental ion velocity distributions were reconstructed as developed during the longitudinal plasma expansion. The obtained onset plasma temperatures are in the range of similar to 18-45 eV depending on the ablated metals. Also the ion angular spreads were found to be a function of ablated metal, e.g., the narrowest for Fe, the broadest for Al, due to different collisional coupling in the plasma population. Abstract: The manner in which spin-polarized electrons interact with a magnetized thin film is currently described by a semi-classical approach. This in turn provides our present understanding of the spin transfer, or spin torque phenomenon. However, spin is an intrinsically quantum-mechanical quantity. Here, we make the first strides towards a fully quantum-mechanical description of spin transfer through spin currents interacting with a Heisenberg-coupled spin chain. Because of quantum entanglement, this requires a formalism based on the density matrix approach. Our description illustrates how individual spins in the chain time-evolve as a result of spin transfer.

Abstract: We investigate the effects of coupling to multiple-phonon modes on the properties of a Holstein polaron. To this end, we generalize the Momentum Average approximations MA((0)) and MA((1)) to deal with multiple-phonon modes. As for a single-phonon mode, these approximations are found to be numerically very efficient. They become exact for very weak or very strong couplings, and are highly accurate in the intermediate regimes, e.g. the spectral weights obey exactly the first six, respectively eight, sum rules. Our results show that the effect on ground-state properties is cumulative in nature. As a result, if the effective coupling to one mode is much larger than to all the others, this mode effectively determines the ground-state properties. However, even very weak coupling to a second phonon mode has important non-perturbational effects on the higher-energy spectrum, in particular on the dispersion and the phonon statistics of the polaron band. This has important consequences on the analysis and interpretation of data for real materials.

Abstract: The orientation of a C(70) fullerene molecule encapsulated in a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) depends on the tube radius. First we confirm that chirality effects do not affect the orientation as well by comparing discrete atomistic calculations with the results of a continuous tube approximation for a variety of SWCNTs. The molecular and the tube symmetry are exploited by using symmetry-adapted rotator functions. We accurately determine the optimal molecular orientation as a function of the tube radius; for low (less than or similar to 7 A) and high (greater than or similar to 7.2 A) tube radii, lying and standing molecular orientations are recovered, respectively. In between, we observe a transition regime. In addition, we consider off-axis positions. We perform a one-dimensional liquid description of a chain of on-axis C(70) molecules inside a SWCNT. All results agree well with recent x-ray diffraction experiments.

Abstract: A classical two-dimensional (2D) model for an artificial atom is used to make a numerical exact study of elastic and nonelastic scattering. Interesting differences in the scattering angle distribution between this model and the well-known Rutherford scattering are found in the small energy and/or small impact parameter scattering regime. For scattering off a classical 2D hydrogen atom different phenomena such as ionization, exchange of particles, and inelastic scattering can occur. A scattering regime diagram is constructed as function of the impact parameter (b) and the initial velocity (v) of the incoming particle. In a small regime of the (b,v) space the system exhibits chaos, which is studied in more detail. Analytic expressions for the scattering angle are given in the high impact parameter asymptotic limit.

Abstract: Molecular dynamic simulations are performed to investigate the melting process of small three-dimensional clusters (i.e., systems with one and two shells) of classical charged particles trapped in an isotropic parabolic potential. The confined particles interact through a repulsive potential. We find that the ground-state configurations for systems with N=6, 12, 13, and 38 particles interacting through a Coulomb potential are magic clusters. Such magic clusters have an octahedral or icosahedral symmetry and are found to have a large stability against intrashell diffusion leading to an intershell melting transition prior to the intrashell and radial melting process. For systems with two shells a local radial melting of subshells is found at low temperatures resulting in a structural transition leading to an increased symmetry of the ordered system. Using Lindemanns criterion the different melting temperatures are determined and the influence of the screening of the interparticle interaction was investigated. A normal mode analysis is performed and some of the normal modes are found to be determinantal for the melting process.
