Abstract |
We study the effect of structural inversion asymmetry, induced by the presence of substrates or by external electric fields, on charge transport in magnetic topological ultra-thin films. We consider general orientations of the magnetic impurities. Our results are based on the Boltzmann formalism along with a modified relaxation time scheme. We show that the structural inversion asymmetry enhances the charge transport anisotropy induced by the magnetic impurities and when only one conduction subband contributes to the charge transport a dissipationless charge current is accessible. We demonstrate how a substrate or gate voltage can control the effect of the magnetic impurities on the charge transport, and how this depends on the orientation of the magnetic impurities. |

Abstract |
Using first-principles calculations and reactive force field molecular dynamics simulations, we study the structural properties and dynamics of a fluorine (F) atom, either adsorbed on the surface of single layer graphene (F/GE) or between the layers of AB stacked bilayer graphene (F@ bilayer graphene). It is found that the diffusion of the F atom is very different in those cases, and that the mobility of the F atom increases by about an order of magnitude when inserted between two graphene layers. The obtained diffusion constant for F/GE is twice larger than that experimentally found for gold adatom and theoretically found for C-60 molecule on graphene. Our study provides important physical insights into the dynamics of fluorine atoms between and on graphene layers and explains the mechanism behind the separation of graphite layers due to intercalation of F atoms. |

Abstract |
Recent experimental studies showed that formation of a two-dimensional crystal structure of nitrogenated holey graphene (NHG) is possible. Similar to graphene, NHGs have an atomically thin and strong crystal structure. Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the structural, phononic, and thermal properties of monolayer NHG crystal. Our charge analysis reveals that the charged holey sites of NHG provide a reactive ground for further functionalization by adatoms or molecules. We also found that similar to graphene, the NHG structure has quite high-frequency phonon modes and the presence of nitrogen atoms leads to the emergence of additional vibrational modes. Our phonon analysis reveals the presence of three characteristic Raman-active modes of NHG. Furthermore, the analysis of constant-volume heat capacity showed that the NHG structure has a linear temperature dependence in the low-temperature region. The strong lattice structure and unique thermal properties of the NHG crystal structure are desirable in nanoscale device applications. |

Abstract |
The adsorption characteristics of alkali, alkaline-earth, and transition metal adatoms on silicene, a graphene-like monolayer structure of silicon are analyzed by means of first-principles calculations. In contrast to graphene, interaction between the metal atoms and the silicene surface is quite strong due to its highly reactive buckled hexagonal structure. In addition to structural properties, we also calculate the electronic band dispersion, net magnetic moment, charge transfer, work function, and dipole moment of the metal adsorbed silicene sheets. Alkali metals, Li, Na, and K, adsorb to hollow sites without any lattice distortion. As a consequence of the significant charge transfer from alkalis to silicene, metalization of silicene takes place. Trends directly related to atomic size, adsorption height, work function, and dipole moment of the silicene/alkali adatom system are also revealed. We found that the adsorption of alkaline-earth metals on silicene is entirely different from their adsorption on graphene. The adsorption of Be, Mg, and Ca turns silicene into a narrow gap semiconductor. Adsorption characteristics of eight transition metals Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Mo, and W are also investigated. As a result of their partially occupied d orbital, transition metals show diverse structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Upon the adsorption of transition metals, depending on the adatom type and atomic radius, the system can exhibit metal, half-metal, and semiconducting behavior. For all metal adsorbates, the direction of the charge transfer is from adsorbate to silicene, because of its high surface reactivity. Our results indicate that the reactive crystal structure of silicene provides a rich playground for functionalization at nanoscale. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.085423 |

Abstract |
During the synthesis of ultrathin materials with hexagonal lattice structure Stone-Wales (SW) type of defects are quite likely to be formed and the existence of such topological defects in the graphenelike structures results in dramatic changes of their electronic and mechanical properties. Here we investigate the formation and reactivity of such SW defects in silicene. We report the energy barrier for the formation of SW defects in freestanding (similar to 2.4 eV) and Ag(111)-supported (similar to 2.8 eV) silicene and found it to be significantly lower than in graphene (similar to 9.2 eV). Moreover, the buckled nature of silicene provides a large energy barrier for the healing of the SW defect and therefore defective silicene is stable even at high temperatures. Silicene with SW defects is semiconducting with a direct band gap of 0.02 eV and this value depends on the concentration of defects. Furthermore, nitrogen substitution in SW-defected silicene shows that the defect lattice sites are the least preferable substitution locations for the N atoms. Our findings show the easy formation of SW defects in silicene and also provide a guideline for band gap engineering in silicene-based materials through such defects. |

Abstract |
Typical Raman spectra of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) display two prominent peaks, E-2g and A(1g), that are well separated from each other. We find that these modes are degenerate in bulk WSe2 yielding one single Raman peak in contrast to other TMDs. As the dimensionality is lowered, the observed peak splits in two. In contrast, our ab initio calculations predict that the degeneracy is retained even for WSe2 monolayers. Interestingly, for minuscule biaxial strain, the degeneracy is preserved, but once the crystal symmetry is broken by a small uniaxial strain, the degeneracy is lifted. Our calculated phonon dispersion for uniaxially strained WSe2 shows a good match to the measured Raman spectrum, which suggests that uniaxial strain exists in WSe2 flakes, possibly induced during the sample preparation and/or as a result of the interaction between WSe2 and the substrate. Furthermore, we find that WSe2 undergoes an indirect-to-direct band-gap transition from bulk to monolayers, which is ubiquitous for semiconducting TMDs. These results not only allow us to understand the vibrational and electronic properties of WSe2, but also point to effects of the interaction between the monolayer TMDs and the substrate on the vibrational and electronic properties. Abstract |
A single crystal of Cu74.08Al23.13Be2.79 undergoes a martensitic phase transition at 246 and 232 K under heating and cooling, respectively. The phase fronts between the austenite and martensite regions of the sample are weakly mobile with a power-law resonance under external stress fields. Surprisingly, the martensite phase is elastically much harder than the austenite phase showing that interfaces between various crystallographic variants are strongly pinned and cannot be moved by external stress while the phase boundary between the austenite and martensite regions in the sample remains mobile. This unusual behavior was studied by dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. The remnant strain, storage modulus, and internal friction were recorded simultaneously for different applied forces in DMA. With increasing forces, the remnant strain increases monotonously while the internal friction peak height shows a minimum at 300 mN. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the pinning is generated by dislocations which are inherited from the austenite phase. |

Abstract |
The Green function approach to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity is used to study nanofilms. We go beyond previous models and include effects of confinement on the strength of the electron-phonon coupling as well as on the electronic spectrum and on the phonon modes. Within our approach, we find that in ultrathin films, confinement effects on the electronic screening become very important. Indeed, contrary to what has been advanced in recent years, the sudden increases of the density of states when new bands start to be occupied as the film thickness increases, tend to suppress the critical temperature rather than to enhance it. On the other hand, the increase of the number of phonon modes with increasing number of monolayers in the film leads to an increase in the critical temperature. As a consequence, the superconducting critical parameters in such nanofilms are determined by these two competing effects. Furthermore, in sufficiently thin films, the condensate consists of well-defined subcondensates associated with the occupied bands, each with a distinct coherence length. The subcondensates can interfere constructively or destructively giving rise to an interference pattern in the Cooper pair probability density. |

Abstract |
Superconductivity in nanowires made of weak coupling superconductor materials is investigated using a Green function approach. We show that these are multigap systems in which the ratio Delta(T)/k(B)T(c) is to a large extent similar to what is observed in some high-T-c two-gap systems, such as MgB2 and some of the Fe-based superconductors. On the other hand, because of confinement, the superfluid density has a temperature behavior of the form n(s)(T) = 1 – (T/T-c)(3) near T-c, thus deviating from the BCS behavior for bulk superconductors. |

Abstract |
We use density functional theory within the local density approximation to investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of Al-doped MgO. The concentrations considered range from 6% to 56%. In the latter case, we also compare the optical properties of the amorphous and crystalline phases. We find that, overall, the electronic properties of the crystalline phases change qualitatively little with Al concentration. On the other hand, the changes in the electronic structure in the amorphous phase are more important, most notably because of deep impurity levels in the band gap that are absent in the crystalline phase. This leads to observable effects in, e.g., the optical absorption edge and in the refractive index. Thus, the latter can be used to characterize the crystalline to amorphous transition with Al doping level. |

Abstract |
We performed a detailed investigation of the oxidation of the technologically relevant GaAs(001)-beta 2(2x4) surface via density functional calculations. The purpose is to gain insights on the atomistic mechanisms and local bondings that underlie the degradation of the surface properties once exposed to oxygen. The study comprises the adsorption of single O atoms, through the sampling of several adsorption sites, and the subsequent formation of the O adsorbate at increasing coverage by taking into account multiple-atom adsorption. Based on the evaluation of the energetics and the structural properties of the atomistic models generated, the results here reported delineate a consistent picture of the initial stage of the surface oxidation: (i) at low coverage, in the limit of single O insertions, oxygen is incorporated on the surface forming a twofold-bridging Ga-O-As bond; (ii) at increasing coverage, as multiple O atoms are involved, this is accompanied by the formation of a threefold-coordinated bond (with two Ga and one As atoms); (iii) the latter has important implications regarding the electronic properties of the adsorbate since this O bonding may result in the formation of As dangling bonds. Moreover, a clear trend of increased energy gain for the incorporation of neighboring O atoms compared to single O insertions indicates that the formation of oxide clusters is favored over a regime of uniform oxidation. Our findings provide a detailed description of the O bonding and stress the importance of modeling the adsorption of multiple O atoms for an accurate description of the surface oxidation. |

Abstract |
The coupling of angstrom-sized electron probes with spin-polarized electronic transitions shows that the inelastically scattered probe electron is in a mixed state containing electron vortices with nonzero orbital angular momentum. These electrons create an asymmetric intensity distribution in energy filtered diffraction patterns, giving access to maps of the magnetic moments with atomic resolution. A feasibility experiment shows evidence of the predicted effect. Potential applications are column-by-column maps of magnetic ordering, and the creation of angstrom-sized free electrons with orbital angular momentum by inelastic scattering in a thin ferromagnetic foil. |

Abstract |
After the advent of energy-loss magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD) in 2006, rapid progress in theoretical understanding and in experimental performance was achieved, recently demonstrating a spatial resolution of better than 2 nm. Similar to the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism technique, EMCD is used to study atom specific magnetic moments. The latest generation of electron microscopes opens the road to the mapping of spin moments on the atomic scale with this method. Here the theoretical background to reach this challenging aim is elaborated. Numerical simulations of the L3 transition in an Fe specimen, based on a combination of the density-matrix approach for inelastic electron scattering with the propagation of the probe electron in the lattice potential indicate the feasibility of single spin mapping in the electron microscope. |

Abstract |
Ripples in pristine freestanding graphene naturally orient themselves in an array that is alternately curved-up and curved-down; maintaining an average height of zero. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to apply a local force, the graphene sheet will reversibly rise and fall in height until the height reaches 60%-70% of its maximum at which point a sudden, permanent jump occurs. We successfully model the ripples as a spin-half Ising magnetic system, where the height of the graphene plays the role of the spin. The permanent jump in height, controlled by the tunneling current, is found to be equivalent to an antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition. The thermal load underneath the STM tip alters the local tension and is identified as the responsible mechanism for the phase transition. Four universal critical exponents are measured from our STM data, and the model provides insight into the statistical role of graphene's unusual negative thermal expansion coefficient. |

Abstract |
Quantum thermal transport in armchair and zigzag graphene nanoribbons is investigated in the presence of single atomic vacancies and subject to different boundary conditions. We start with a full comparison of the phonon polarizations and energy dispersions as given by a fifth-nearest-neighbor force-constant model (5NNFCM) and by elasticity theory of continuum membranes (ETCM). For free-edge ribbons, we discuss the behavior of an additional acoustic edge-localized flexural mode, known as fourth acoustic branch (4ZA), which has a small gap when it is obtained by the 5NNFCM. Then, we show that ribbons with supported edges have a sample-size dependent energy gap in the phonon spectrum which is particularly large for in-plane modes. Irrespective to the calculation method and the boundary condition, the dependence of the energy gap for the low-energy optical phonon modes against the ribbon width W is found to be proportional to 1/W for in-plane, and 1/W-2 for out-of-plane phonon modes. Using the 5NNFCM, the ballistic thermal conductance and its contributions from every single phonon mode are then obtained by the nonequilibrium Green's function technique. We found that, while edge and central localized single atomic vacancies do not affect the low-energy transmission function of in-plane phonon modes, they reduce considerably the contributions of the flexural modes. On the other hand, in-plane modes contributions are strongly dependent on the boundary conditions and at low temperatures can be highly reduced in supported-edge samples. These findings could open a route to engineer graphene based devices where it is possible to discriminate the relative contribution of polarized phonons and to tune the thermal transport on the nanoscale. |

Abstract |
The cyclotron resonance energies, the corresponding oscillator strengths, and the cyclotron absorption spectrum for trilayer graphene are calculated for both ABA and ABC stacking. A gate potential across the stacked layers leads to (1) a reduction of the transition energies, (2) a lifting of the degeneracy of the zero Landau level, and (3) the removal of the electron-hole symmetry. |

Abstract |
A tight-binding model is used to study the energy band of graphene and graphene ribbon under simple shear strain. The ribbon consists of lines of carbon atoms in an armchair or zigzag orientation where a simple shear strain is applied in the x-direction keeping the atomic distances in the y-direction unchanged. Such modification in the lattice gives an energy band that differs in several aspects from the one without any shear and with pure shear. The changes in the spectrum depend on the line displacement of the ribbon, and also on the modified hopping parameter. It is also shown that this simple shear strain tunes the electronic properties of both graphene and graphene ribbon, opening and closing energy gaps for different displacements of the system. The modified density of states is also shown. |

Abstract |
The electronic spectrum of three coupled graphene layers (graphene trilayers) is investigated in the presence of an external magnetic field. We obtain analytical expressions for the Landau level spectrum for both the ABA and ABC type of stacking, which exhibit very different dependence on the magnetic field. We show that layer asymmetry and an external gate voltage can strongly influence the properties of the system. |

Abstract |
Homogenized Ni39.6Mn47.5T12.9 material was investigated by different electron microscopy techniques. Apart from the martensite precursor distortions typical for B2 phase alloys undergoing a thermoelastic martensitic transformation upon cooling, coherent dodecahedron-shaped precipitates with sizes between 20 and 100 nm and faceted by lozenge shapes of {110}-type planes are observed. Selected-area and microdiffraction patterns reveal an overall unit cell with a size of 3 x 3 x 3 units of the bcc lattice of the matrix and a body-centred symmetry without screw axes. Finally a ternary gamma-brass-type atomic structure of space group 14(3) over bar m is suggested for these precipitates in accordance with the obtained symmetry constraints, the energy-dispersive X-ray measurements and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. This is the first time this type of structure is found in an alloy completely consisting of transition-metal elements. |

Abstract |
We derive an exact solution to the problem of spin snake states induced in a nonhomogeneous magnetic field by a combined action of the Rashba spin-orbit and Zeeman fields. The electron spin behavior as a function of the cyclotron orbit center position and an external homogeneous magnetic field was obtained. It is shown that in an antisymmetric magnetic field the electron spin in the snake states has only an in-plane projection, perpendicular to the magnetic interface, which vanishes at large positive momenta. Applying an external homogeneous magnetic field adds a finite out-of-plane spin component and simultaneously gaps out the spectral branches, which results in regular beating patterns of the spin current components. |

Abstract |
We investigate the effect of Rashba and intrinsic spin-orbit couplings on the electronic properties and spin configurations of Dirac fermions confined in: (i) a flat graphene sheet, (ii) a graphene wire with p-n-p structure, and (iii) a superlattice of graphene wires. The interplay between the spin-orbit interaction mechanisms breaks the electron-hole symmetry and the spin configuration induced by Rashba spin-orbit coupling lacks inversion symmetry in k space. We show that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction doubles the Fabry-Perot resonant modes in the transmission spectrum of a graphene wire and opens new channels for the electron transmission. Moreover, it leads to the appearance of spin split extra Dirac cones in the energy spectrum of a graphene superlattice. It is shown that the spin of the electrons and holes confined in a flat graphene sheet is always perpendicular to their motion while this is not the case for the other nanostructures. |
