Abstract: This paper investigates energy filtering in silicon nanowires and nanosheets by resonant electron tunneling through a geometric superlattice. A geometric superlattice is any kind of periodic geometric feature along the transport direction of the nanowire or nanosheet. Multivalley quantum-transport simulations are used to demonstrate the manifestation of minibands and minibandgaps in the transmission spectra of such a superlattice. We find that the presence of different valleys in the conduction band of silicon favors a nanowire with a rectangular cross section for effective energy filtering. The obtained energy filter can consequently be used in the source extension of a field-effect transistor to prevent high-energy electrons from contributing to the leakage current. Self-consistent Schrodinger-Poisson simulations in the ballistic limit show minimum subthreshold swings of 6 mV/decade for geometric superlattices with indentations. The obtained theoretical performance metrics for the simulated devices are compared with conventional III-V superlatticeFETs and TunnelFETs. The adaptation of the quantum transmitting boundary method to the finite-element simulation of 3-D structures with anisotropic effective mass is presented in Appendixes A and B. Our results bare relevance in the search for steep-slope transistor alternatives which are compatible with the silicon industry and can overcome the power-consumption bottleneck inherent to standard CMOS technologies. Abstract: In the quantum mechanical simulation of exploratory semiconductor devices, continuum methods based on a k.p/envelope function model have the potential to significantly reduce the computational burden compared to prevalent atomistic methods. However, full-zone k.p/envelope function simulation approaches are scarce and existing implementations are not self-consistent with the calculation of the electrostatic potential due to the lack of a stable procedure and a proper normalization of the multi-band envelope functions. Here, we therefore present a self-consistent procedure based on a full-zone spectral k.p/envelope function band structure model. First, we develop a proper normalization for the multi-band envelope functions in the presence of transmitting boundary conditions. This enables the calculation of the free carrier densities. Next, we construct a procedure to obtain self-consistency of the carrier densities with the electrostatic potential. This procedure is stabilized with an adaptive scheme that relies on the solution of Poisson's equation in the Gummel form, combined with successive underrelaxation. Finally, we apply our procedure to homostructure In0.53Ga0.47As tunnel field-effect transistors (TFETs) and staggered heterostructure GaAs0.5Sb0.5/In0.53Ga0.47As TFETs and show the importance of self-consistency on the device predictions for scaled dimensions. Abstract: In this work, we have performed Monte Carlo simulations to study a mixed spin-1 and spin-3/2 Ising ferrimagnetic system on a square lattice with two different random single-ion anisotropies. This lattice is divided in two interpenetrating sublattices with spins S-A = 1 in the sublattice A and S-B = 3/2 in the sublattice B. The exchange interaction between the spins on the sublattices is antiferromagnetic (J < 0). We used two random single-ion anisotropies, D-i(A) and D-j(B), on the sublattices A and B, respectively. We have determined the phase diagram of the model in the critical temperature T-c versus strength of the random single-ion anisotropy D plane and we shown that it exhibits only second-order phase transition lines. We also shown that this system displays compensation temperatures for some cases of the random single-ion distribution. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Polycrystalline samples of La3Ni2NbO9 and La3Ni2TaO9 have been characterised by X-ray and neutron diffraction, electron microscopy, magnetometry and muon spin relaxation (mu SR); the latter technique was also applied to La3Ni2SbO9. On the length scale of a neutron diffraction experiment, the six-coordinate sites of the monoclinic perovskite structure are occupied in a 1:1 ordered manner by Ni and a random 1/3Ni/2/3B' mixture. Electron microscopy demonstrated that this 1:1 ordering is maintained over microscopic distances, although diffuse scattering indicative of short-range ordering on the mixed site was observed. No magnetic Bragg scattering was observed in neutron diffraction patterns collected from La3Ni2B'O-9 (B' = Nb or Ta) at 5 K although in each case mu SR identified the presence of static spins below 30 K. Magnetometry showed that La3Ni2NbO9 behaves as a spin glass below 29 K but significant short-range interactions are present in La3Ni2NbO9 below 85 K. The contrasting properties of these compounds are discussed in terms of their microstructure.

Abstract: A comparative study of two plasma sources (floating-electrode dielectric barrier discharge, DBD, Drexel University; atmospheric pressure argon plasma jet, kINPen, INP Greifswald) on cancer cell toxicity was performed. Cell culture protocols, cytotoxicity assays, and procedures for assessment of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were standardized between both labs. The inhibitory concentration 50 (IC50) and its corresponding H2O2 deposition was determined for both devices. For the DBD, IC50 and H2O2 generation were largely dependent on the total energy input but not pulsing frequency, treatment time, or total number of cells. DBD cytotoxicity could not be replicated by addition of H2O2 alone and was inhibited by larger amounts of liquid present during the treatment. Jet plasma toxicity depended on peroxide generation as well as total cell number and amount of liquid. Thus, the amount of liquid present during plasma treatment in vitro is key in attenuating short-lived species or other physical effects from plasmas. These in vitro results suggest a role of liquids in or on tissues during plasma treatment in a clinical setting. Additionally, we provide a platform for correlation between different plasma sources for a predefined cellular response.

Abstract: A detailed conductive atomic force microscopic investigation is carried out to directly image the electron emission behavior for nitrogen-doped diamond nanorods (N-DNRs). Localized emission measurements illustrate uniform distribution of high-density electron emission sites from N-DNRs. Emission sites coupled to nano graphitic phases at the grain boundaries facilitate electron transport and thereby enhance field electron emission from N-DNRs, resulting in a device operation at low turn-on fields of 6.23 V/mu m, a high current density of 1.94 mA/cm(2) (at an applied field of 11.8 V/mu m) and a large field enhancement factor of 3320 with a long lifetime stability of 980 min. Moreover, using N-DNRs as cathodes, a microplasma device that can ignite a plasma at a low threshold field of 390 V/mm achieving a high plasma illumination current density of 3.95 mA/cm2 at an applied voltage of 550 V and a plasma life-time stability for a duration of 433 min was demonstrated.

Abstract: In the last twenty years, numerical modeling has become an indispensable part of magnetism research. It has become a standard tool for both the exploration of new systems and for the interpretation of experimental data. In the last five years, the capabilities of micromagnetic modeling have dramatically increased due to the deployment of graphical processing units (GPU), which have sped up calculations to a factor of 200. This has enabled many studies which were previously unfeasible. In this topical review, we give an overview of this modeling approach and show how it has contributed to the forefront of current magnetism research.

Abstract: In recent years, the interest in treating cancer cells with plasma treated media (PTM) and plasma treated water (PTW) has increased tremendously. However, the actions of PTM and PTW are still not entirely understood. For instance, it is not clear whether the action of PTM is due to a modification in proteins/amino acids after plasma treatment of the media, or due to reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) generated from the plasma, or a combination of both effects. To differentiate between the actions of RONS and modified proteins/amino acids on the treatment of cancer cells, we compared the effects of PTM and PTW on two different pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (MiaPaca-2, BxPc3) and pancreatic stellate cells
(PSCs) (hPSC128-SV). PSCs closely interact with cancer cells to create a tumor-promoting environment that stimulates local tumor progression and metastasis. We treated culture media and deionized water with a cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) jet, and subsequently applied this PTM/PTW at various ratios to the pancreatic cancer and PSC cell lines. We evaluated cell death, intracellular ROS concentrations and the mRNA expression profiles of four oxidative stress-related genes, i.e. Mitogen-activated protein kinase 7 (MAPK7), B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL2), Checkpoint kinase 1 (CHEK1) and DNA damage-inducible transcript 3, also known as C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP). Our findings demonstrate that PTM and PTW have a similar efficacy to kill pancreatic cancer cells, while PTW is slightly more effective in killing PSCs, as compared to PTM. Furthermore, we observed an enhancement of the intracellular ROS concentrations in both pancreatic cancer cells and PSCs. Thus, it is likely that under our experimental conditions, the anti-cancer activity of PTM can be attributed more to the RONS present in the treated liquid, than to the modification of proteins/amino acids in the media. Furthermore, the fact that the chemo-resistant PSCs were killed by PTM/PTW may offer possibilities for new anti-cancer therapies for pancreatic cancer cells, including PSCs.

Abstract: Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a vapor based technique which allows to deposit uniform, conformal films with a thickness control at the atomic scale. In this research, Al 2 O 3 coatings were deposited on micrometer-sized Fe and Cu powder (particles) using the thermal trimethylaluminum (TMA)/ water (H 2 O) process in a rotary pump-type ALD reactor. Rotation of the powder during deposition was required to obtain a pinhole-free ALD coating. The protective nature of the coating was evaluated by quantifying its effectiveness in protecting the metal particles during oxidative annealing treatments. The Al 2 O 3 coated powders were annealed in ambient air while in-situ thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and in-situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) data were acquired. The thermal stability of a series of Cu and Fe powder with different Al 2 O 3 thicknesses were determined with TGA. In both samples a clear shift in oxidation temperature is visible. For Cu and Fe powder coated with 25 nm Al 2 O 3 , we observed an increase of the oxidation temperature with 300-400°C. For the Cu powder a thin film of only 8 nm is required to obtain an initial increase in oxidation temperature of 200°C. In contrast, for Fe powder a thicker coating of 25 nm is required. In both cases, the oxidation temperature increases with increasing thickness of the Al 2 O 3 coating. These results illustrate that the Al 2 O 3 thin film, deposited by the thermal ALD process (TMA/H 2 O) can be an efficient and pinhole-free barrier layer for micrometer-sized powder particles, provided that the powder is properly agitated during the process to ensure sufficient vapour-solid interaction.

Abstract: <script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('Due to nonzero intrinsic spin-orbit interaction in buckled honeycomb crystal structures, silicene and germanene exhibit interesting topological properties, and are therefore candidates for the realization of the quantum spin Hall effect. We employ the Kane-Mele model to investigate the electron states in hexagonal silicene and germanene nanorings having either zigzag or armchair edges in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We present results for the energy spectra as function of magnetic field, the electron density of the spin-up and spin-down states in the ring plane, and the calculation of the probability current density. The quantum spin Hall phase is found at the edges between the nontrivial topological phase in silicene and germanene and vacuum. We demonstrate that the helical edge states in zigzag silicene and germanene nanorings can be qualitatively well understood by means of classical magnetic moments. However, this is not the case for comparable-sized armchair nanorings, where the eigenfunctions spread throughout the ring. Finally, we note that the energy spectra of silicene and germanene nanorings are similar and that the differences between the two are mainly related to the difference in magnitude of the spin-orbit coupling.'));

Abstract: Today, further downscaling of mobile electronic devices poses serious problems, such as energy consumption and local heat dissipation. In this context, spin wave majority gates made of very thin ferromagnetic films may offer a viable alternative. However, similar downscaling of magnetic thin films eventually enforces the latter to operate as quasi-2D magnets, the magnetic properties of which are not yet fully understood, especially those related to anisotropies and external magnetic fields in arbitrary directions. To this end, we have investigated the behaviour of an easy-plane and easy-axis anisotropic ferromagnet-both in two and three dimensions-subjected to a uniform magnetic field, applied along an arbitrary direction. In this paper, a spin-1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian with anisotropic exchange interactions is solved using double-time temperature-dependent Green's functions and the Tyablikov decoupling approximation. We determine various magnetic properties such as the Curie temperature and the magnetization as a function of temperature and the applied magnetic field, discussing the impact of the system's dimensionality and the type of anisotropy. The magnetic reorientation transition taking place in anisotropic Heisenberg ferromagnets is studied in detail. Importantly, spontaneous magnetization is found to be absent for easy-plane 2D spin systems with short range interactions.

Abstract: Bilayer graphene samples may exhibit regions where the two layers are locally delaminated forming a so-called quanttun blister in the graphene sheet. Electron and hole states can be confined in this graphene quantum blisters (GQB) by applying a global electrostatic bias. We scrutinize the electronic properties of these confined states under the variation of interlayer bias, coupling, and blister's size. The spectra display strong anti-crossings due to the coupling of the confined states on upper and lower layers inside the blister. These spectra are layer localized where the respective confined states reside on either layer or equally distributed. For finite angular momentum, this layer localization can be at the edge of the blister and corresponds to degenerate modes of opposite momenta. Furthermore, the energy levels in GQB exhibit electron-hole symmetry that is sensitive to the electrostatic bias. Finally, we demonstrate that confinement in GQB persists even in the presence of a variation in the interlayer coupling.

Abstract: Lath martensite is important in industry because it is the key strengthening component in many advanced high strength steels. The study of crystallography and chemistry of lath martensite is extensive in the literature, however, mostly based on fully martensitic steels. In this work, lath martensite in dual phase steels is investigated with a focus on the substructure identification of the martensite islands and microstructural bands using electron backscattered diffraction, and on the influence of the accompanied tempering process during industrial coating process on the distribution of alloying elements using atom probe tomography. Unlike findings for the fully martensitic steels, no martensite islands with all 24 Kurdjumov-Sachs variants have been observed. Almost all martensite islands contain only one main packet with all six variants and minor variants from the remaining three packets of the same prior austenite grain. Similarly, the martensite bands are typically composed of connected domains originating from prior austenite grains, each containing one main packets (mostly with all variants) and few separate variants. The effect of tempering at similar to 450 degrees C (due to the industrial zinc coating process) has also been investigated. The results show a strong carbon partitioning to lath boundaries and Cottrell atmospheres at dislocation core regions due to the thermal process of coating. In contrast, auto-tempering contributes to the carbon redistribution only in a limited manner. The substitutional elements are all homogenously distributed. The phase transformation process has two effects on the material: mechanically, the earlier-formed laths are larger and softer and therefore more ductile (as revealed by nanoindentation); chemically, due to the higher dislocation density inside the later-formed laths, which are generally smaller, carbon Cottrell atmospheres are predominantly observed.

Abstract: This work is focused on an in-depth experimental characterization of multi-tube reactors for indoor air purification integrated in ventilation systems. Glass tubes were selected as an excellent photocatalyst substrate to meet the challenging requirements of the operating conditions in a ventilation system in which high flow rates are typical. Glass tubes show a low-pressure drop which reduces the energy demand of the ventilator, and additionally, they provide a large exposed surface area to allow interaction between indoor air contaminants and the photocatalyst. Furthermore, the performance of a range of P25-loaded sol-gel coatings was investigated, based on their adhesion properties and photocatalytic activities. Moreover, the UV light transmission and photocatalytic reactor performance under various operating conditions were studied. These results provide vital insights for the further development and scaling up of multi-tube reactors in ventilation systems which can provide a better comfort, improved air quality in indoor environments, and reduced human exposure to harmful pollutants.

Abstract: Background
During normal pregnancy, placental oxidative stress (OS) is present during all three trimesters and is necessary to obtain normal cell function. However, if OS reaches a certain level, pregnancy complications might arise. In preeclampsia (PE), a dangerous pregnancy specific hypertensive disorder, OS induced in the ischemic placenta causes a systemic inflammatory response and activates maternal endothelial cells. In this study, we aimed to quantify superoxide concentrations (as a measure of systemic OS) using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and correlate them to markers of systemic inflammation, iron status and vascular function.
Methods
Fifty-nine women with a healthy pregnancy (HP), 10 non-pregnant controls (NP) and 28 PE patients (32±3.3weeks) were included. During HP, blood samples for superoxide, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume (MPV) and iron status were taken at 10, 25 and 39 weeks. Vascular measurements for arterial stiffness (carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV), augmentation index (AIx), augmentation Pressure (AP)) and microvascular endothelial function (reactive hyperemia index (RHI)) were performed at 35 weeks. In PE, all measurements were performed at diagnosis. CMH (1-hydroxy-3-methoxycarbonyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidine) was used as spin probe for EPR, since the formed CM radical
corresponds to the amount of superoxide.
Results
Superoxide concentration remains stable during pregnancy (p = 0.92), but is significantly higher compared to the NP controls (p<0.0001). At 25 weeks, there is a significant positive correlation between superoxide and ferritin concentration. (p = 0.04) In PE, superoxide, systemic inflammation and iron status are much higher compared to HP (all p<0.001). During HP, superoxide concentrations correlate significantly with arterial stiffness (all p<0.04), while in PE superoxide is significantly correlated to microvascular endothelial function (p = 0.03).
Conclusions
During HP there is an increased but stable oxidative environment, which is correlated to ferritin concentration. If superoxide levels increase, there is an augmentation in arterial stiffness. In PE pregnancies, systemic inflammation and superoxide concentrations are higher and result in a deterioration of endothelial function. Together, these findings support the hypothesis that vascular function is directly linked to the amount of OS and that measurement of OS in combination with vascular function tests might be used in the prediction of PE.
