  Abstract We demonstrate that near-edge X-ray-absorption fine-structure spectra combined with full-field transmission X-ray microscopy can be used to study the electronic structure of graphite flakes consisting of a few graphene layers. The flake was produced by exfoliation using sodium cholate and then isolated by means of density-gradient ultracentrifugation. An image sequence around the carbon K-edge, analyzed by using reference spectra for the in-plane and out-of-plane regions of the sample, is used to map and spectrally characterize the flat and folded regions of the flake. Additional spectral features in both π and σ regions are observed, which may be related to the presence of topological defects. Doping by metal impurities that were present in the original exfoliated graphite is indicated by the presence of a pre-edge signal at 284.2 eV.

  Abstract Focused-electron-beam-induced deposition (FEBID) is used as a direct-write approach to decorate ultrasmall Pt nanoclusters on carbon nanotubes at selected sites in a straightforward maskless manner. The as-deposited nanostructures are studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in 2D and 3D, demonstrating that the Pt nanoclusters are well-dispersed, covering the selected areas of the CNT surface completely. The ability of FEBID to graft nanoclusters on multiple sides, through an electron-transparent target within one step, is unique as a physical deposition method. Using high-resolution TEM we have shown that the CNT structure can be well preserved thanks to the low dose used in FEBID. By tuning the electron-beam parameters, the density and distribution of the nanoclusters can be controlled. The purity of as-deposited nanoclusters can be improved by low-energy electron irradiation at room temperature.

  Abstract Recently, a new simple and fast method for the synthesis of InP quantum dots by using phosphine as phosphorous precursor and myristic acid as surface stabilizer was reported. Purification after synthesis is necessary to obtain samples with good optical properties. Two methods of purification were compared and the surface processes which occur during purification were studied. Traditional precipitation with acetone is accompanied by a small increase in photoluminescence. It occurs that during the purification the hydrolysis of the indium precursor takes place, which leads to a better surface passivation. The electrophoretic purification technique does not increase luminescence efficiency but yields very pure quantum dots in only a few minutes. Additionally, the formation of In(OH)(3) during the low temperature synthesis was explained. Purification of quantum dots is a very significant part of post-synthetical treatment that determines the properties of the material. But this subject is not sufficiently discussed in the literature. The paper is devoted to the processes that occur at the surface of quantum dots during purification. A new method of purification, electrophoresis, is investigated and described in particular.

  Abstract Heterometal clusters containing Ru and Au, Co and/or Pt are anchored onto carbon nanotubes and nanofibers functionalized with chelating phosphine groups. The cluster anchoring yield is related to the amount of phosphine groups available on the nanocarbon surface. The ligands of the anchored molecular species are then removed by gentle thermal treatment in order to form nanoparticles. In the case of Au-containing clusters, removal of gold atoms from the clusters and agglomeration leads to a bimodal distribution of nanoparticles at the nanocarbon surface. In the case of Ru-Pt species, anchoring occurs without reorganization through a ligand exchange mechanism. After thermal treatment, ultrasmall (1-3 nm) bimetal Ru-Pt nanoparticles are formed on the surface of the nanocarbons. Characterization by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) confirms their bimetal nature on the nanoscale. The obtained bimetal nanoparticles supported on nanocarbon were tested as catalysts in ammonia synthesis and are shown to be active at low temperature and atmospheric pressure with very low Ru loading.

  Abstract A major revolution for electron microscopy in the past decade is the introduction of aberration correction, which enables one to increase both the spatial resolution and the energy resolution to the optical limit. Aberration correction has contributed significantly to the imaging at low operating voltages. This is crucial for carbon-based nanomaterials which are sensitive to electron irradiation. The research of carbon nanomaterials and nanohybrids, in particular the fundamental understanding of defects and interfaces, can now be carried out in unprecedented detail by aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (AC-TEM). This review discusses new possibilities and limits of AC-TEM at low voltage, including the structural imaging at atomic resolution, in three dimensions and spectroscopic investigation of chemistry and bonding. In situ TEM of carbon-based nanomaterials is discussed and illustrated through recent reports with particular emphasis on the underlying physics of interactions between electrons and carbon atoms.

  Abstract SmFe8.75 Si-0.25 C/alpha-Fe nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized using high energy milling, followed by annealing at 750 degrees C. The crystal structure of these compounds was characterized by the Rietveld method using powder X-ray diffraction data. By increasing the concentration of Sm, we observed a decrease in the amount of alpha-Fe phase. The morphology of the samples was determined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The average grain size is about 20 nm. The magnetic properties were investigated at room temperature and at 10 K. A ferromagnetic behavior was observed in all samples at both temperatures. An increase of the soft magnetic phase alpha-Fe induced an increase in the magnetization and a decrease in coercivity. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  Abstract The Ca0.85-1.5xGdxEu0.1_0.05-0.5xWO4 (0 < x < 0.567) series of cation-deficient scheelites is investigated to unveil the influence of the cation vacancies on the crystal structure and luminescent properties. The concentration of the vacancies is varied by the heterovalent substitution of Gd3+ for Ca2+, keeping the concentration of the Eu3+ luminescent centers constant in all compounds of the series. The crystal structure of the materials is studied using a combination of transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. At low vacancy concentration (x = 0.1, 0.2), cations and cation vacancies are randomly distributed in the structure, and the materials preserve the I41/a symmetry of the parent scheelite structure [x = 0.1: a = 5.25151(1) Å, c = 11.39479(2) Å; x = 0.2: a = 5.25042(1) Å, c = 11.41335(2) Å]. At higher concentration, the cation-vacancy ordering gives rise to incommensurately modulated structures. The x = 0.3 structure has a (3 + 2)D tetragonal symmetry [superspace group I41/a(a,b,0)00(-b,a,0)00, a = 5.24700(1) Å, c = 11.45514(3) Å, q1 = 0.51637(14)a* + 0.80761(13)b*, q2 = -0.80761a* + 0.51637b*]. At x = 0.4, the scheelite basic cell undergoes a monoclinic distortion with the formation of the (3 + 1)D structure [superspace group I2/b(a,b,0)00, a = 5.23757(1) Å, b = 5.25035(1) Å, c = 11.45750(2) Å, g = 90.5120(2) o, q = 0.54206(8)a* + 0.79330(8)b*]. In both structures, the antiphase Ca and (Gd,Eu) occupancy modulations indicate that the ordering between the A cations and vacancies also induces partial Ca/(Gd,Eu) cation ordering. Further increase of the Gd3þ content up to x = 0.567 leads to the formation of a monoclinic phase (space group C2/c) with the Eu2/3WO4-type structure. Despite the difference in the cation-vacancy ordering patterns, all materials in the series demonstrate very similar quantum efficiency and luminescence decay lifetimes. However, the difference in the local coordination environment of the A cation species noticeably affects the line width and the multiplet splitting of the 4f6-4f6 transitions.

  Abstract Nanocomposites CoOx/SnO2 based on tin oxide powders with different crystallinity have been prepared by wet chemical synthesis and characterized in detail by ICP-MS, XPS, EPR, XRD, HAADF-STEM imaging and EDX-STEM mapping. It was shown that cobalt is distributed differently between the bulk and surface of SnO2 nanocrystals, which depends on the crystallinity of the SnO2 matrix. The measurements of gas sensor properties have been carried out during exposure to CO (10 ppm), and H2S (2 ppm) in dry air. The decrease of sensor signal toward CO was attributed to high catalytic activity of Co3O4 leading to oxidation of carbon monoxide entirely on the surface of catalyst particles. The formation of a p-CoOx/n-SnO2 heterojunction results in high sensitivity of nanocomposites in H2S detection. The conductance significantly changed in the presence of H2S, which was attributed to the formation of metallic cobalt sulfide and removal of the p – n junction.

  Abstract The orientation relationships (ORs), segregation behavior and morphologies of beta precipitate in an over aged Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy are systematically characterized by atomic resolution high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). Six different ORs and two morphologies, i.e. rod-and lath-like are revealed for beta precipitates, and Cu segregation at the (beta/alpha-Al interface is observed in all these precipitates. The rod-like beta precipitate has multiple beta-angles ranging from 6.1 to 14.1 degrees and non-uniform Cu segregation at the (beta/alpha-Al interface, while the lath-like beta precipitate has a constant beta-angle of 0 degrees and a periodic Cu segregation. These different ORs are explained to be attributable to the rotation of QP lattice, a near-hexagonal network of Si columns formed within beta precipitates, which causes different lattice matching of beta with alpha-Al lattice. These findings provide new insights in controlling the precipitation hardening and mechanical properties of this type of alloys. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  Abstract Binary metal oxides with superior charge capacity and electrochemical activity have gained great interests. In this work, monodispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters on the ordered mesoporous carbons were fabricated by a facile self-developed impregnation method. The synthesized hybrids possess improved wettability, high specific surface area (> 700m(2)/g) and regular mesoporous channels (similar to 4 nm), resulting in improved electrochemical performance for supercapacitors. These well-dispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters exhibit a significant specific capacitance up to 367 F/g in the aqueous KNO3 electrolyte and good reversibility with a cycling efficiency of 99.8%. It is proposed that the mesoporous structure can facilitate the diffusion of electrolyte ions and then accelerate the electrochemical utilization of CoMoO4 nanoclusters. The results demonstrate that the produced binary metal oxide nanoclusters with excellent capacitance and good retention can be used as promising electrodes for the environment-friendly supercapacitors.   Abstract The heterogeneous precipitation of the eta (MgZn2) phase on the E (Al18Mg3Cr2) dispersoids of the 7075 aluminum alloy was systematically investigated by atomic resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). It is found that coarse B particles are heterogeneously precipitated at the E particle interface after water quenching and isothermal aging at 120 degrees C. The incoherent E/Al interface is responsible for the high tendency of heterogeneous precipitation of the B phase. Two different orientation relationships (ORs) between the eta, E and Al matrix are identified: OR1 [2 (11) over bar0](eta)[011](E)//[(1) over bar 12](Al), (01 (1) over bar0)(eta)//(13 (3) over bar)(E)//(201)(Al), OR2 [(1) over bar 12](E)//[0001](eta)//[011](Al), (01 (1) over bar0 )(eta)//(220)(E)//(34 (4) over bar)(Al). The eta phase is preferential to nucleate along the {111}(E) or the {220}(E) planes, depending on its OR. The heterogeneous nucleation of B phase on the E particle could stabilize the E/Al interface by introducing a coherent E/eta interface, which increases the drive force of heterogeneous precipitation. The reorientation of eta phase and mutual diffusion of solute atoms could assist the coherency of the E/eta interface. The present results suggest that increasing the coherency of the E/Al interface is a promising method to suppress the heterogeneous precipitation of the eta phase. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.   Abstract In the present work two different cold working and annealing schemes were utilized, and the asymmetric superelastic response of thermomechanically processed materials were then assessed through cyclic tensile and compressive modes of deformation. The values of transformation stress, transformation strain, and pseudoelastic strain were measured for each treated and solutionized specimens and the asymmetric response was compared. In the solution annealed state, the difference of these parameters at different deformation modes was negligible due to the weak texture of the material, while for thermomechanically treated ones, development of specific deformation and recrystallization texture components was identified to be one of the underlying reasons of intensified asymmetry. The evolved substructure during the thermomechanical processing also played a substantial role in determining the asymmetric response. The presence of fine grains and dense dislocation substructure could hinder the movement of the transformation front, thus limiting the range of transformation. In tensile mode, the transformation stress was lower, but higher transformation strain was achieved, which was discussed relying on the slip activity in specified oriented grains. The lower transformation strain in compression mode led to lower pseudoelastic strain due to the narrow transformation range which finally degraded superelastic response of the material.   Abstract We studied the morphology of ramps in REBa2CU3O7 (REBCO) epitaxial films on SrTiO3 substrates, fabricated by RF magnetron sputter deposition and pulsed laser deposition (PLD), by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The ramps were fabricated by Ar ion beam etching using masks of standard photoresist and TIN. AFM-studies on ramps in sputter deposited films show a strong dependence, i.e. formation of facets and ridges, on the angle of incidence of the ion beam with respect to the substrate surface as well as the rotation angle with respect to the crystal axes of the substrate. Ramps in pulsed laser deposited films did not show this dependence, Furthermore, we studied the effect of an anneal step prior to the deposition of barrier layers (i.e. PrBa2CU3O7, SrTiO3, CeO2) on the ramp. First results show a recrystallization of the ramp surface, resulting in terraces and a non-homogeneous growth of the barrier material on top of it. The thickness variations, for thin layers of barrier material, con even become much larger than expected from the amount of deposited material and are dependent on the deposition and anneal conditions. HREM studies show a well defined interface between barrier layer and electrodes. The angle of the ramp depends on the etch rate of the mask and REBCO, and on the angle of incidence of the ion beam. TiN has a much lower etch rate compared to photoresist, resulting in an angle of the ramp comparable to the angle of incidence, resulting in a low etching rate on the ramp. These results will lead to improved electrical characteristics of ramp-type junctions.

  Abstract In the present research work the binary NiTi alloys with various compositions in the range of 50.351 at.% Ni were used. Samples have been annealed at 850 °C for 15 min and then quenched in water. In order to characterize transformation temperatures and enthalpy changes of the forward and the reverse martensitic transformation, Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) experiments were performed. The enthalpy and entropy changes as a function of Ni atomic content have been thermodynamically investigated. Results show that enthalpy and entropy changes of martensitic transformation decrease when Ni atomic content increases. The variation of enthalpy and entropy of martensitic transformation with Ni content in binary NiTi alloys were explained by thermodynamic parameters and electron concentration of alloy (e/a) respectively.

  Abstract The microstructure of various compounds of the Ti-Ni-Au alloy system is investigated by transmission electron microscopy in relation with changing lattice parameters improving the compatibility conditions between austenite and martensite expressed by the lambda(2) = 1 equation based on the Geometrically NonLinear Theory of Martensite (GNLTM). Although local differences in microstructure are observed, when increasing the gold content compound twins are replaced by Type I twins, while twinned lamellar structures are replaced by untwinned plates and self-accommodating structures when lambda(2) = 1 is approached, all confirming the predictions of the GNLTM.   Abstract Transmission electron microscopy was performed to investigate the microstructure and precipitates in the annealed Co38Ni33Al29 ferromagnetic shape memory alloy. Apart from the dendritic secondary phase in the austenite matrix, micron-sized (up to 100 μm) fcc-based precipitates with partial γ′ L12 ordering and containing none, one or three {1 1 1}p parallel twin planes were found. The orientation relationship between the precipitates and matrix was found to be KurdjumovSachs. STEMEDX analysis indicates that twinned and non-twinned precipitates are Co-rich and Al- and Ni-deficient with respect to the matrix and with a lower Co/Al ratio for the latter. The 3D morphologies of precipitates were reconstructed with focused ion beam/scanning electron microscope dual-beam slice-and-view imaging, showing that the single {1 1 1}p plane twinned precipitates have a plate-like shape while the non-twinned precipitates are lath-like and often bent.

  Abstract The 3D size, morphology and distribution of autocatalytic-grown Ni4Ti3 precipitates in a Ni51Ti49 single crystal were characterized via a FIB/SEM Slice-and-View procedure and phase-field simulation. Important parameters on size and shape of the precipitates were measured. The pair distribution function and the minimum distance between two precipitates from different variants were calculated to describe the 3D distribution of the autocatalytic-grown Ni4Ti3 precipitates in single crystal Ni-Ti, with a comparison to the polycrystalline Ni50.8Ti49.2 alloy.   Abstract Single crystal antimony-doped SnO2 whiskers have been synthesized by in situ doping process in horizontal flow reactor. The produced whiskers were modified with 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1 or 2 wt.% Pd. The processes of Pd particles growth and aggregation are described on the base of AFM and STEM data. Depending on the content of introduced Pd precursor, the various mechanisms (Volmer-Weber or Stranski-Krastanov) of Pd nanoparticles growth realize. The dependence of sensor signal to CO on Pd concentration has non-monotonous character determined by the size of Pd nanoparticles and their aggregation degree. The best sensor signal toward CO was observed for whiskers decorated with 0.1 wt.% Pd. This concentration corresponds to the presence of individual 3-5 nm Pd nanoparticles on the surface of the whiskers. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  Abstract The present contribution reviews some recent electron microscopy investigations on different shape memory systems in which a variety of nano- and micro-defect structures play an essential role in the functional behaviour of the material. (NiTi3)-Ti-4 precipitates in Ni-Ti are a well-known example for which the focus is now on the 3D configurations, in Ni-Ti-Nb Nb-rich nanoprecipitates are thought to have a large impact on the hysteresis, in Co-Ni-Al an Al-enriched zone nearby the y'-precipitates yields a small sandwiched austenite while some first signs of quasidynamical lattice deformation in non-frozen Ni-Ti strain glass are measured by Cs-aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy.   Abstract Two new metal-rich palladium-indium selenides, Pd5InSe and Pd8In2Se, were synthesized using a high-temperature ampoule technique. Their crystal structures were determined from Rietveld analysis of powder diffraction data, supported by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction. Both compounds crystallize in tetragonal system with P4/mmm space group (Pd5InSe: a = 4.0290(3) angstrom, c = 6.9858(5) angstrom, Z = 1; Pd8In2Se: a = 4.0045(4) angstrom, c = 10.952(1) angstrom, Z = 1). The first compound belongs to the Pd5TlAs structure type, while the second one – to a new structure type. Main structural units in both selenides are indium-centered [Pd12In] cuboctahedra of the tetragonally distorted Cu3Au type, single-and double-stacked along the c axis in Pd5InSe and Pd8In2Se, respectively, alternating with [Pd8Se] rectangular prisms. DFT electronic structure calculations predict both compounds to be 3D metallic conductors and Pauli-like paramagnets. According to the bonding analysis based on the electron localization function topology, both compounds feature multi-centered palladium-indium interactions in their heterometallic fragments.   Abstract Anti-phase boundaries (APBs) in an ordered CoPt alloy are planar defects which disturb the ordered structure in their vicinity and decrease the magnetic properties. However, it has not yet been clarified to what extend the APBs disturb the ordering. In this study, high-resolution HAADF-STEM images are statistically analysed based on the image intensities estimated by the statistical parameter estimation theory. In the procedure, averaging intensities, fitting the intensity profiles to specific functions, and assessment based on a statistical test are performed. As a result, the APBs in the stable CoPt are found to be characterised by two atomic planes, and a contrast transition range as well as the centre of an inclined APB is determined. These results show that the APBs are quite sharp and therefore may have no notable effect on the net magnetic properties due to their small volume fraction. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.   Abstract Ca9-xPbxEu(PO4)(7) (0 <= x <= 1) solid solutions with a whitlockite-type (or beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2)-type) structure (sp.gr. R3c) were prepared by a standard solid-state method in air. Their luminescent properties under near-ultraviolet (n-UV) light were investigated. Excitation spectra of Ca9-xPbxEu(PO4)(7) showed the strongest absorption at about 395 nm, which matches well with commercially available n-UV-emitting GaN-based LED chips. Emission spectra indicated an intense red emission due to the D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+, with a maximum in the intensity for Ca8.5Pb0.5Eu(PO4)(7). The emission intensity of Ca8.5Pb0.5Eu(PO4)(7) was about 1.8 times higher than that of a Ca9Eu(PO4)(7) phosphor. We suggest that the introduction of Pb2+ is an efficient approach to enhance luminescence properties of such phosphors. We clarified the influence of the Ca2+/Pb2+ substitution on intensities of three bands for the D-5(0) -> F-7(0) transition in excitation spectra of Ca9-xPbxEu(PO4)(7). In addition, we found a reversible first-order phase transition from R3c to R (3) over barc symmetry by second-harmonic generation in the range from 753 K (x = 1) to 846 K (x = 0).   Abstract BACKGROUND Laccase is an intensively researched enzyme for industrial use. Except for decolorisation measurements, HPLC analysis is the conventional method for monitoring the phenolic removal during laccase enzyme reaction. This paper reports an investigation of the continuous UV absorbance follow-up of the laccase reaction with steam pretreated poplar hydrolysate. RESULTS Vanillin was used as a model substrate and lignocellulose xylose rich fraction (XRF) as a biologically complex substrate for laccase detoxification. The reaction was followed by HPLC-UV as well as by UV spectrometric measurements. Results suggest that the reaction can be successfully monitored by measuring the change of UV absorbance at 280 nm, without previous compound separation. In case of XRF experiments the spectrophotometric follow-up is especially useful, as HPLC analysis takes a long time and provides less information than in case of single substrates. The method seems to be suitable for optimization and process control. CONCLUSION The obtained results can help to construct a fast, easy and straightforward monitoring system for laccase-phenolic substrate reactions.

  Abstract Discrepancies exist between the theoretically predicted and experimentally measured performance of band-to-band tunneling devices, such as Esaki diodes and tunnel field-effect transistors (TFETs). We resolve this discrepancy for highly-doped, direct-bandgap Esaki diodes by successfully calibrating a semi-classical model for high-doping-induced ballistic band-tails tunneling currents at multiple temperatures with two In0.53Ga0.47As Esaki diodes using their SIMS doping profiles, C-V characteristics and their forward-bias current density in the negative differential resistance (NDR) regime. The current swing in the NDR regime is shown not to be linked to the band-tails Urbach energy. We further demonstrate theoretically that the calibrated band-tails contribution is also the dominant band-tails contribution to the subthreshold swing of the corresponding TFETs. Lastly, we verify that the presented procedure is applicable to all direct-bandgap semiconductors by successfully applying it to InAs Esaki diodes in literature.

  Abstract Effects of cooling slope angle and the temperature of molten metal on the globular structure of M2 high speed steel after holding at the semisolid state have been investigated. The globular structure was achieved by pouring the molten metal at 1595 °C on the ceramic cooling slope with the length of 200 mm and the angle of 25°. The globular structure of M2 high speed steel in the form of rolledannealed and as cast condition after holding at semisolid state has been achieved. The size of globular grains of cooling slope sample was smaller than that of the rolledannealed and as cast samples. Solid particles of rolledannealed sample after holding at semisolid state had better roundness compared with cooling slope sample. Dissolution of carbides in the austenite phase at grain boundaries leads to formation of globular particles in the semisolid state. MC-type and M6C-type eutectic carbides reprecipitate during cooling cycle along grain boundaries.
