Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Hyperbolic polaritons in ultra thin materials such as few layers of van derWaals heterostructures provide a unique control over light-matter interaction at the nanoscale and with various applications in flat optics. Natural hyperbolic surface plasmons have been observed on thin films of WTe2 in the light wavelength range of 16-23 mu m (similar or equal to 13-18 THz) [Nat. Commun. 11, 1158 (2020)]. Using time-dependent density functional theory, it is found that carbon doped monolayer phosphorene (beta-allotrope of carbon phosphide monolayer) exhibits natural hyperbolic plasmons at frequencies above similar or equal to 5 THz which is not observed in its parent materials, i.e. monolayer of black phosphorous and graphene. Furthermore, we found that by electrostatic doping the plasmonic frequency range can be extended to the mid-infrared. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
In order to optimize the plasma-synthesis and modification process of carbon nanomaterials for applications such as nanoelectronics and energy storage, a deeper understanding of fundamental hydrogengraphite/graphene interactions is required. Atomistic simulations by Molecular Dynamics have proven to be indispensable to illuminate these phenomena. However, severe time-scale limitations restrict them to very fast processes such as reflection, while slow thermal processes such as surface diffusion and molecular desorption are commonly inaccessible. In this work, we could however reach these thermal processes for the first time at time-scales and surface temperatures (1000 K) similar to high-flux plasma exposure experiments during the simulation of multilayer graphene etching by 5 eV H ions. This was achieved by applying the Collective Variable-Driven Hyperdynamics biasing technique, which extended the inter-impact time over a range of six orders of magnitude, down to a more realistic ion-flux of 1023m2s1. The results show that this not only causes a strong shift from predominant ion-to thermally induced interactions, but also significantly affects the hydrogen uptake and surface evolution. This study thus elucidates H ion-graphite/graphene interaction mechanisms and stresses the importance of including long time-scales in atomistic simulations at high surface temperatures to understand the dynamics of the ion-surface system. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
In this report, the possibility of Pt catalytic activity for the dissociation of hydrogen molecules and subsequent hydrogen adsorption on sucrose templated carbon at ambient temperature has been studied. In order to investigate Pt catalytic effect for hydrogen storage solely, 6.8 wt.% Pt-doped (Pt/TC) and pure templated carbon (TC) possessing almost identical specific surface area (SSA) and pore volume (Vp) have been successfully synthesized. Since both Pt/TC and TC shares for their textural properties (e.g. SSA and Vp), any difference of hydrogen adsorption characteristic and storage capacity can be ascribed to the presence of Pt nanoparticles. Both samples are characterized by various techniques such as powder Xray diffraction, ICP-OES, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, cryogenic thermal desorption spectroscopy, low-pressure high-resolution hydrogen and nitrogen BET and high-pressure hydrogen adsorption isotherms in a Sieverts' apparatus. By applying hydrogen and deuterium isotope mixture, cryogenic thermal desorption spectroscopy point to a Pt catalytic activity for the dissociation of hydrogen molecules. Furthermore, the hydrogen adsorption isotherms at RT indicate an enhancement of the initial hydrogen adsorption kinetics in Pt-doped system. However, the hydrogen storage capacity of Pt/TC exhibits a negligible enhancement with a strong hysteresis, suggesting no connection between the spillover effect and a feasible hydrogen storage enhancement. Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
In this work, the structural, electronic and optical properties of monolayer and bilayer of boron doped C3N are investigated by means of density functional theory-based first-principles calculations. Our results show that with increasing the B dopant concentration from 3.1% to 12.5% in the hexagonal pattern, an indirect-to-direct band gap (0.8 eV) transition occurs. Furthermore, we study the effect of electric field and strain on the B doped C3N bilayer (B-C3N@2L). It is shown that by increasing E-field strength from 0.1 to 0.6V/angstrom, the band gap displays almost a linear decreasing trend, while for the > 0.6V/angstrom, we find dual narrow band gap with of 50 meV (in parallel E-field) and 0.4 eV (in antiparallel E-field). Our results reveal that in-plane and out-of-plane strains can modulate the band gap and band edge positions of the B-C3N@2L. Overall, we predict that B-C3N@2L is a new platform for the study of novel physical properties in layered two-dimensional materials (2DM) which may provide new opportunities to realize high-speed low-dissipation devices. Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Ion irradiation of carbon nanotubes very often leads to defect formation. However, we have recently shown that Ar ion irradiation in a limited energy window of 1025 eV may enhance the initial cap nucleation process, when the carbon network is in contact with the metal nanocatalyst. Here, we employ reactive molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate that ion irradiation in a higher energy window of 1035 eV may also heal network defects after the nucleation stage through a non-metal-mediated mechanism, when the carbon network is no longer in contact with the metal nanocatalyst. The results demonstrate the possibility of beneficially utilizing ions in e.g. plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition of carbon nanotubes. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Low-temperature growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been claimed to provide a route towards chiral-selective growth, enabling a host of applications. In this contribution, we employ reactive molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate how plasma-based deposition allows such low-temperature growth. We first show how ion bombardment during the growth affects the carbon dissolution and precipitation process. We then continue to demonstrate how a narrow ion energy window allows CNT growth at 500 K. Finally, we also show how CNTs in contrast cannot be grown in thermal CVD at this low temperature, but only at high temperature, in agreement with experimental data. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Metal halide perovskite (MHP) quantum dots (QDs) offer immense potential for several areas of photonics research due to their easy and low-cost fabrication and excellent optoelectronic properties. However, practical applications of MHP QDs are limited by their poor stability and, in particular, their tendency to aggregate. Here, we develop a two-step double-solvent strategy to grow and confine CsPbBr3 QDs within the three-dimensional (3D) cavities of a mesoporous SBA-16 silica scaffold (CsPbBr3@SBA-16). Strong confinement and separation of the MHP QDs lead to a relatively uniform size distribution, narrow luminescence, and good ambient stability over 2 months. In addition, the CsPbBr3@SBA-16 presents a high activity and stability for visible-light-driven photocatalytic toluene C(sp(3))-H bond activation to produce benzaldehyde with similar to 730 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) yield rate and near-unity selectivity. Similarly, the structural stability of CsPbBr3@SBA-16 QDs is superior to that of both pure CsPbBr3 QDs and those confined in MCM-41 with 1D channels. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as new porous materials for capture and separation of binary gas mixtures. Tuning the metal sites in MOF structures has an impact on properties, which enhance affinity of gas adsorption and selectivity (e.g., surface area, cavity, electric field, etc.). The synthesis and characterization of a M-DABCO series (M = Ni, Co, Cu, Zn) of MOFs are described in this study. The experiments were conducted using multicomponent gas mixtures and the Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) was applied to determine the CO2/CH4 selectivity. Experimental adsorption isotherms were fitted with a model equation to evaluate the characteristic adsorption energy (Isosteric, Qst) of this series. The Ni metal in the M-DABCO series reveals the best performance concerning CO2 adsorption and CH4/CO2 selectivity at ambient conditions based on IAST calculations. The combination of characterizations, calculations and adsorption experiments were used to discuss the metal impact on the adsorption sites in the M-DABCO series at ambient conditions. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Methods used to strengthen metals generally also cause a pronounced decrease in ductility and electrical conductivity. In this work a bioinspired strategy is applied to surmount the dilemma. By assembling copper submicron flakes cladded with in-situ grown graphene, graphene/copper matrix composites with a nanolaminated architecture inspired by a natural nacre have been prepared. Owing to a combined effect-from the bioinspired nanolaminated architecture and improved interfacial bonding, a synergy has been achieved between mechanical strength and ductility as well as electrical conductivity in the graphene/copper matrix composites. With a low volume fraction of only 2.5% of graphene, the composite shows a yield strength and elastic modulus similar to 177% and similar to 25% higher than that of unreinforced copper matrix, respectively, while retains ductility and electrical conductivity comparable to that of pure copper. The bioinspired nanolaminated architecture enhances the efficiencies of two-dimensional (2D) graphene in mechanical strengthening and electrical conducting by aligning graphene to maximize performance for required loading and carrier transporting conditions, and toughens the composites by crack deflection. Meanwhile, in-situ growth of graphene is beneficial for improving interfacial bonding and structural quality of graphene. The strategy sheds light on the development of composites with good combined structural and functional properties. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Monolithic nickel/carbon (Ni/C) composites were prepared from coal tar pitch-impregnated compressed expanded graphite pre-decorated with NiO particles (EGNiO) by pyrolysis at 550 °C and subsequent steam activation at 800 °C. The microstructural arrangement of the Ni-comprising nanoparticles in the composites was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The specific surface area and porosity of the composites were analyzed by nitrogen adsorption. The catalytic activity of the composites was compared with the material obtained by the conventional H2 treatment of EGNiO using hydrocracking of 2,2,3-trimethylpentane as a model reaction. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were exposed to a CF4 rf-plasma. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis shows that the treatment effectively grafts fluorine atoms onto the MWCNTs. The fluorine atomic concentration and the nature of the CF bond (semi-ionic or covalent) can be tuned by varying the exposure time. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirms that the valence electronic states are altered by the grafting of fluorine atoms. Characterization with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals that while the plasma treatment does not induce significant etching impact on the CNT-surface, it does increase the number of active sites for gold cluster formation. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Periodic mesoporous organosilicas provide the best of two worlds: the strength and porosity of an inorganic framework combined with the infinite possibilities created by the organic bridging unit. In this work we focus on post-synthetical modification of benzene bridged PMO, in order to create bromobenzene PMO. In the past, this proved to be very challenging due to unwanted structural deterioration. However, now we have found a way to brominate this material whilst keeping the structure intact. In-depth structural analysis by solid state NMR and XPS shows both vast progress over previous attempts as well as potential for improvement. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, without a nickel-containing gaseous precursor, was used to synthesize continuous nickel (Ni) nanorods inside the hollow cavity of carbon nanofibers (CNFs), thus forming vertically aligned Ni/CNF core/shell structures. Scanning and transmission electron microscopic images indicate that the elongated Ni nanorods originate from the catalyst particles at the tips of the CNFs and that their formation is due to the effect of extrusion induced by the compressive force of the graphene layers during growth. Different from previous work, each vertically-aligned core/shell structure reported is totally isolated from its neighbors. Continuous Ni nanorods are found to separate into smaller ones with increasing growth time, which was ascribed to (i) the limited amount of Ni available in the tip of the CNF, (ii) the polycrystalline nature of the Ni nanorods and (iii) the combined effects of the compressive stresses on the side of the Ni nanorods and of the tensile stress along their axis. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Polycrystalline boron-doped superconducting diamond, synthesized at high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) via a reaction of a single piece of crystalline boron with monolithic graphite, has been investigated by analytical transmission electron microscopy. The local boron distribution and boron environment have been studied by a combination of (scanning) transmission electron microscopy ((S)TEM) and spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). High resolution TEM imaging and EELS elemental mapping have established, for the first time, the presence of largely crystalline diamond-diamond grain boundaries within the material and have evidenced the presence of substitutional boron dopants within individual diamond grains. Confirmation of the presence of substitutional B dopants has been obtained through comparison of acquired boron K-edge EELS fine structures with known references. This confirmation is important to understand the origin of superconductivity in polycrystalline B-doped diamond. In addition to the substitutional boron doping, boron-rich inclusions and triple-points, both amorphous and crystalline, with chemical compositions close to boron carbide B4C, are evidenced. Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Post-synthesis hydrothermal treatments have been used to improve the quality of MCM-41 materials. In our latest work, merging of surfactant-containing silica microspheres during the hydrothermal treatments was observed. Mechanistic insights and the different stages that are involved in the merging process can be summarized as follows. First, the surfaces of the starting microspheres open up due to the dissolution of silica. Then the dissolved silica species provide mass source for the formation of particle necks connecting two neighboring microspheres. Gradually, surfaces of the starting microspheres are flattened to meet the needs of further growth of the necks. Finally, some chain-like highly-ordered mesoporous structures up to several micrometers are formed. The observed merging of the surfactant-containing microspheres is a re-assembling process, which is under the control of electrostatic force between the dissolved silica species and the surfactant cations. The occluded surfactant cations in the precursor spheres play important roles in the merging process. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Purification and shortening of carbon nanotubes have attracted a great deal of attention to increase the biocompatibility and performance of the material in several applications. Steam treatment has been employed to afford both purification and shortening of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Steam removes the amorphous carbon and the graphitic particles that sheath catalytic nanoparticles, facilitating their removal by a subsequent acidic wash. The amount of metal impurities can be reduced in this manner below 0.01 wt.%. The length distribution of MWCNTs after different steam treatment times (from 1 h to 15 h) was assessed by box plot analysis of the electron microscopy data. Samples with a median length of 0.57 μm have been prepared with the reported methodology while preserving the integrity of the tubular wall structure. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Recently, a process has been proposed for generating negatively-curved carbon schwarzites via zeolite-templating (Braun et al., 2018). However, the proposed process leads to atomistic models which are not very symmetric and often rather defective. In the present work, an improved generation approach is developed, by imposing symmetry constraints, which systematically leads to defect-free, hence more stable, schwarzites. The stability of the newly predicted symmetric schwarzites is also compared to that of other carbon nanostructures (in particular carbon nanotubes – CNTs), which could also be accommodated within the same templates. Our results suggest that only a few of these (such as FAU, SBT and SBS) can fit schwarzites more stable than CNTs. Our predictions could help experimentalists in the crucial choice of the template for the challenging synthesis of schwarzites. Furthermore, being highly symmetric and stable phases, the models could also be synthesized by means of other experimental procedures. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Selective etching allows for obtaining carbon nanotubes with a specific chirality. While plasma-assisted etching has already been used to separate metallic tubes from their semiconducting counterparts, little is known about the nanoscale mechanisms of the etching process. We combine (reactive) molecular dynamics (MD) and force-bias Monte Carlo (tfMC) simulations to study H-etching of CNTs. In particular, during the hydrogenation and subsequent etching of both the carbon cap and the tube, they sequentially transform to different carbon nanostructures, including carbon nanosheet, nanowall, and polyyne chains, before they are completely removed from the surface of a substrate-bound Ni-nanocluster.We also found that onset of the etching process is different in the cases of the cap and the tube, although the overall etching scenario is similar in both cases. The entire hydrogenation/etching process for both cases is analysed in detail, comparing with available theoretical and experimental evidences. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
Several TEM techniques are used to characterise the local structure of low dimensional forms of carbon. HREM is particularly useful to describe the defect structure of thin films of diamond or fullerenes and C-60-C-70 nanoclusters. A columnar form of graphite is analysed, mainly by electron diffraction which allowed us to propose a growth mechanism. Diffraction contrast dark field microscopy, in combination with electron diffraction, allows a detailed characterisation of carbon nanotubes; e.g. the chirality distribution of tubes in ropes of single wall tubes is studied by selected area electron diffraction. The atomic structure of natural HEU-type zeolite and two ion-exchanged variants of the zeolite, Ag+ (Ag-HEU) and Zn2+ (Zn-HEU) ion exchanged HEU-type zeolites, are investigated using advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques in combination with X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray absorption fine structure measurements. In both ion-exchanged materials, loading of the natural HEU zeolite is confirmed. Using low-voltage, aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy at low-dose conditions, the local crystal structure of natural HEU-type zeolite is determined and the interaction of the ion-exchanged natural zeolites with the Ag+ and Zn2+ ions is studied. In the case of Ag-HEU, the presence of Ag+ ions and clusters at extra-framework sites as well as Ag nanoparticles has been confirmed. The Ag nanoparticles are preferentially positioned at the zeolite surface. For Zn-HEU, no large Zn(O) nanopartides are present, instead, the HEU channels are evidenced to be decorated by small Zn(O) clusters. (c) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
The Coulomb blockade effect is commonly used in solid state electronics for the control of electron flow
at the single-particle level. Potentially, it allows the creation of single-electron point sources demanded
for prospective electron microscopy instruments and other vacuum electronics devices. Here we realize
this potential via creation of a stable point electron source composed of a carbon nanowire electrically
coupled to a diamond nanotip by a tunnel junction. Using energy spectroscopy analysis, we characterize
the electrons liberated from the nanometer scale carbon heterostructures in time and energy domains.
Our experimental results demonstrate perfect agreement with theory prediction of Coulomb oscillations
of the Fermi level in the nanowire and allow to determine the mechanisms of their suppression.
Persistence of the oscillations at room temperature, high intensity field emission with currents up to
1 mA, and other characteristics of our emitters are very promising for practical realization of coherent
single-electron guns. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
The effect of thermal treatment and mechanical stress on the structural and photocatalytic properties of eight different (synthetic and commercial) photocatalysts has been thoroughly investigated. Different mesoporous Ti-based materials were prepared via surfactant based synthesis routes (e.g. Pluronic 123, CTMABr = Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) or via template-free synthesis routes (e.g. trititanate nanotubes). Also, the stabilizing effect of the NaOH/NH4OH post-treatment on the templated mesoporous materials and their photocatalytic activity was investigated. Furthermore, the thermal and mechanical properties of commercially available titanium dioxides such as P25 Evonik® and Millenium PC500® were studied. The various photocatalysts were analyzed with N2-sorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) to obtain information concerning the specific surface area, pore volume, crystal structure, morphology, phase transitions, etc. In general, results show that the NaOH post-treatment leads to an increased control of the crystallization process during calcination resulting in a higher thermal stability, but at the same time diminishes the photocatalytic activity. Mesoporous materials in which pre-synthesized nanoparticles are used as titania source have the best mechanical stability whereas the mechanical stability of the nanotubes is the most limited. At increased temperatures and pressures, the tested commercial titanium dioxides lose their superior photocatalytic activity caused by a decreased accessibility of the active sites. The observed changes in adsorption capacities and photocatalytic activities cannot be assigned to one single phenomenon. In this respect, it shows the need to define a general/standard method to compare different photocatalysts. Furthermore, it is shown that the photocatalytic properties do not necessarily deteriorate under thermal stress, but can be improved due to crystallization, even though the initial material is (partially) destroyed. It is shown that the usefulness of a specific type of photocatalyst strongly depends on the application and the temperature/pressure to which it needs to resist. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
The flexoelectric and electronic properties of zig-zag graphene nanoribbons are explored under mechanical bending using state of the art first principles calculations. A linear dependence of the bending induced out of plane polarization on the applied strain gradient is found. The inferior flexoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons can be improved by more than two orders of magnitude by hydrogen and fluorine functionalization (CH and CF nanoribbons). A large out of plane flexoelectric effect is predicted for CF nanoribbons. The origin of this enhancement lies in the electro-negativity difference between carbon and fluorine atoms, which breaks the out of plane charge symmetry even for a small strain gradient. The flexoelectric effect can be further improved by co-functionalization with hydrogen and fluorine (CHF Janus-type nanoribbon), where a spontaneous out of plane dipole moment is formed even for flat nanoribbons. We also find that bending can control the charge localization of valence band maxima and therefore enables the tuning of the hole effective masses and band gaps. These results present an important advance towards the understanding of flexoelectric and electronic properties of hydrogen and fluorine functionalized graphene nanoribbons, which can have important implications for flexible electronic applications. Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
The free energy surface (FES) for carbon segregation from nickel nanoparticles is obtained from advanced molecular dynamics simulations. A suitable reaction coordinate is developed that can distinguish dissolved carbon atoms from segregated dimers, chains and junctions on the nanoparticle surface. Because of the typically long segregation time scale (up to ms), metadynamics simulations along the developed reaction coordinate are used to construct FES over a wide range of temperatures and carbon concentrations. The FES revealed the relative stability of different stages in the segregation process, and free energy barriers and rates of the individual steps could then be calculated and decomposed into enthalpic and entropic contributions. As the carbon concentration in the nickel nanoparticle increases, segregated carbon becomes more stable in terms of both enthalpy and entropy. The activation free energy of the reaction also decreases with the increase of carbon concentration, which can be mainly attributed to entropic effects. These insights and the methodology developed to obtain them improve our understanding of carbon segregation process across materials science in general, and the nucleation and growth of carbon nanotube in particular. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
The incorporation of aluminum into the silica columns of hierarchical mesoporous materials (HMMs) was studied. The HMMs were synthesized by a combination of hard and soft templating methods, forming mesoporous SBA-15-type silica columns inside the pores of anodic aluminum oxide membranes via evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA). By adding Al-isopropoxide to the EISA-mixture a full tetrahedral incorporation of Al and thus the creation of acid sites was achieved, which was proved by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Electron microscopy showed that the use of Al-isopropoxide as an Al source for the HMMs led to a change in the mesopore ordering of silica material from circular hexagonal (donut-like) to columnar hexagonal and a 37% increase in specific surface (BET surface). These results were confirmed by a combination of nitrogen physisorption and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments and can be attributed to a swelling of the P123 micelles with isopropanol. The columnar mesopore ordering of silica is advantageous towards the pore accessibility and therefore preferential for many possible applications including catalysis and adsorption on the acid tetrahedral Al-sites. The interaction between evaporated gold and pristine or oxygen plasma treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is investigated. Experimental and theoretical results indicate that gold nucleation occurs at defect sites, whether initially present or introduced by oxygen plasma treatment. Uniform gold cluster dispersion is observed on plasma treated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and associated with the presence of uniformly dispersed oxidized vacancy centres on the CNT surface. |

The interaction of thermal and hyperthermal Ni ions with gas-phase C60 fullerene was investigated at two temperatures with classical molecular dynamics simulations using a recently developed interatomic many-body potential. The interaction between Ni and C60 is characterized in terms of the NiC60 binding sites, complex formation, and the collision and temperature induced deformation of the C60 cage structure. The simulations show how ion implantation theoretically allows the synthesis of both endohedral Ni@C60 and exohedral NiC60 metallofullerene complexes. |

The morphology and structure of hexagonal graphitic BN (h-BN) powders with graphitization indices GI <5, used as precursors for the synthesis of cubic BN (c-BN) crystals, has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy in diffraction contrast and high resolution. We show that besides the GI, which is a general parameter for controlling the structural quality of h-EN ponders, some other microstructural features strongly influence the synthesis of c-BN. In our opinion, the high reactivity of some h-BN powders results from the presence of some nucleation centers for c-BN, observed at the edges of the h-BN particles. They are formed by a rearrangement of the graphitic (0002) planes by bending back, joining in pairs and forming locally nanoarches (half nanotubes). In these particular places, the nature of bonding locally turns towards sp(3), as in the case of c-BN, (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |

The possibility of confinement effects inside a carbon nanotube provides new application opportunities, e.g., growth of novel carbon nanostructures. However, the understanding the precise role of catalystfeedstock in the nanostructure synthesis is still elusive. In our simulation-based study, we investigate the Ni-catalyzed growth mechanism of encapsulated carbon nanostructures, viz. double-wall carbon nanotube and graphene nanoribbon, from carbon and hydrocarbon growth precursors, respectively. Specifically, we find that the tube and ribbon growth is determined by a catalyst-vs-feedstock competition effect. We compare our results, i.e., growth mechanism and structure morphology with all available theoretical and experimental data. Our calculations show that all encapsulated nanostructures contain metal (catalyst) atoms and such structures are less stable than their pure counterparts. Therefore, we study the purification mechanism of these structures. In general, this study opens a possible route to the controllable synthesis of tubular and planar carbon nanostructures for today’s nanotechnology. |

Abstract ![sorted by Abstract field, ascending order (up)](img/sort_asc.gif) |
The recently discovered structural phase transition in Polymerized KC60 at about 50K leads to a doubling of the unit cell volume and is accompanied by a metal-insulator transition. Here, we show that the ((a) over right arrow + (c) over right arrow, (b) over right arrow, (a) over right arrow – (c) over right arrow) superstructure results from orientational charge density waves along the polymer chains and correlated displacements of the K+ ions. The presented model can also account for the metal-insulator transition. The effect is specific for the space group Pmnn of KC60 and is absent in both Rb- and CsC60 (space group 12/m), in agreement with the present experimental knowledge of these compounds. |
