Abstract |
LaAMnSnO(6) (A = Sr, Ba) have been synthesized by high temperature solid-state reactions under dynamic 1% H(2)/Ar flow. Rietveld refinements on room temperature powder X-ray diffraction data indicate that LaSrMnSnO(6) crystallizes in the GdFeO(3)-structure, with space group Pnma and, combined with transmission electron microscopy, LaBaMnSnO(6) in Imma. Both space groups are common in disordered double-perovskites. The Mn(3+) and Sn(4+) ions whose valence states were confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, are completely disordered over the B-sites and the BO(6) octahedra are slightly distorted. LaAMnSnO(6) are ferromagnetic semiconductors with a T(C) = 83 K for the Sr- and 66 K for the Ba-compound. The title compounds, together with the previously reported LaCaMnSnO(6) provide an interesting example of progression from Pnma to Imma as the tolerance factor increases. An analysis of the relationship between space group and tolerance factor for the series LaAMnMO(6) (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; M = Sn, Ru) provides a better understanding of the symmetry determination for double perovskites. |

Abstract |
The synthesis, electron diffraction (ED), synchrotron X-ray and neutron structure, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and magnetic property studies of La2MnVO6 double perovskite are described. Analysis of the synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data for La2MnVO6 indicates a disordered arrangement of Mn and V at the B-site of the perovskite structure. Absence of super-lattice reflections in the ED patterns for La2MnVO6 supports the disordered cation arrangement. Room temperature time-of-flight (TOF) neutron powder diffraction (NPD) data show no evidence of cation ordering, in corroboration with the ED and synchrotron studies (orthorhombic Pnma, a = 5.6097(3), b = 7.8837(5) and c = 5.5668(3) ; 295 K, NPD). A comparison of XAS analyses of La2TVO6 with T = Ni and Co shows T2+ formal oxidation state while the T = Mn material evidences a Mn3+ admixture into a dominantly Mn2+ ground state. V-K edge measurements manifest a mirror image behavior with a V4+ state for T = Ni and Co with a V3+ admixture arising in the T = Mn material. The magnetic susceptibility data for La2MnVO6 show ferromagnetic correlations; the observed effective moment, µeff (5.72 µB) is much smaller than the calculated moment (6.16 µB) based on the spin-only formula for Mn2+ (d5, HS) /V4+ (d1), supportive of the partly oxidized Mn and reduced V scenario (Mn3+/V3+). |

Abstract |
The properties of hetero-nanocrystals (HNCs) depend strongly on the mutual arrangement of the nanoscale components. In this work we have investigated the structural and morphological evolution of colloidal PbSe/CdSe core/shell quantum dots upon annealing under vacuum. Prior to annealing the PbSe core has an approximately octahedral morphology with eight {111} facets, and the CdSe shell has zinc-blende crystal structure. Thermal annealing under vacuum at temperatures between 150 °C and 200 °C induces a structural and morphological reconstruction of the HNCs whereby the PbSe core and the CdSe shell are reorganized into two hemispheres joined by a common {111} Se plane. This thermally induced reconstruction leads to considerable changes in the optical properties of the colloidal PbSe/CdSe HNCs. |

Abstract |
1D CuO/ZnO nanocomposites were grown on Si(100) substrates by means of an original two-step synthetic strategy. ZnO nanorod (NR) arrays were initially deposited by plasma enhanced-chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) from an ArO2 atmosphere. Subsequently, tailored amounts of CuO were dispersed over zinc oxide matrices by radio frequency (RF)-sputtering of Cu from Ar plasmas, followed by thermal treatment in air. A thorough characterization of the obtained systems was carried out by X-ray photoelectron and X-ray excited-Auger electron spectroscopies (XPS and XE-AES), glancing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction (ED) and energy filtered-TEM (EF-TEM). Pure and highly oriented CuO/ZnO NR arrays, free from ternary ZnCuO phases and characterized by a copper(II) oxide content controllable as a function of the adopted RF-power, were successfully obtained. Interestingly, the structural relationships between the two oxides at the CuO/ZnO interface were found to depend on the overall CuO loading. The obtained nanocomposites displayed promising photocatalytic performances in H2 production by reforming of ethanolwater solutions under simulated solar illumination, paving the way to the sustainable conversion of solar light into chemical energy. |

Abstract |
The microporous and activated zeolitic imidazolate framework (Zn(MeIM)2; MeIM = imidazolate-2-methyl; ZIF-8) was loaded with the MOCVD precursor diethyl zinc [Zn(C2H5)2]. Exposure of ZIF-8 to the vapour of the volatile organometallic molecule resulted in the formation of the inclusion compound [Zn(C2H5)2]0.38@ZIF-8 revealing two precursor molecules per cavity. In a second step the obtained material was treated with oxygen (5 vol% in argon) at various temperatures (oxidative annealing) to achieve the composite material ZnO0.35@ZIF-8. The new material was characterized with powder XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis, solid state NMR, elemental analysis, N2 sorption measurements, and transmission electron microscopy. The data give evidence for the presence of nano-sized ZnO particles stabilized by ZIF-8 showing a blue-shift of the UV-vis absorption caused by quantum size effect (QSE). The surface structure and reactivity of embedded ZnO nanoparticles were characterized via carbon dioxide adsorption at different temperatures monitored by ultra-high vacuum FTIR techniques. It was found that the surface of ZnO nanoparticles is dominated by polar OZnO and ZnZnO facets as well as by defect sites, which all exhibit high reactivity towards CO2 activation forming various adsorbed carbonate and chemisorbed CO2δ− species. |

Abstract |
Nanostructured Sm-Fe-Mo semi-hard magnetic material exhibiting enhanced magnetic properties can be produced by ball milling followed by recrystallization. Milled samples were annealed for 30 min in a vacuum at different temperatures (T-A) between 700 and 1190 degrees C. The effects of heat treatment and Mo content on structural and magnetic property changes have been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction using the Rietvekl method, transmission electron microscopy and magnetic measurements. For samples annealed at T-A > 900 degrees C the tetragonal ThMn12-type structure is identified, while for 700 < T-A < 900 degrees C a new out of equilibrium P6/mmm type structure was found as the major phase. This novel nanocrystalline phase has never been synthesized before. The correspondent stoichiometry is determined on the basis of the vacancy model. The Rietveld analysis gives a stoichiometry ratio equal to 1:10, for the out of equilibrium hexagonal phase, which is described with three crystallographic transition metal sites: 3g is fully occupied, 61 occupation is limited to hexagons surrounding the Fe dumbbell pairs 2e. We have performed a magnetic and structural study of nanocrystalline metastable P6/mrnm Sm(Fe1-xMo)(10), correlated with structural transformation towards its equilibrium derivative 14/mrnm Sm(Fe1-xMo)(12). A maximum of the coercive field H-C (H-C > 5 kOe) has been observed for the new hexagonal P6/rnmm phase suggesting that nanocrystalline Sm(Fe,Mo)(10), is a semi hard material, and is potential candidate for magnetic recording. Abstract |
Biomedical nanomagnetic carriers are getting a higher impact in therapy and diagnosis schemes while their constraints and prerequisites are more and more successfully confronted. Such particles should possess a well-defined size with minimum agglomeration and they should be synthesized in a facile and reproducible high-yield way together with a controllable response to an applied static or dynamic field tailored for the specific application. Here, we attempt to enhance the heating efficiency in magnetic particle hyperthermia treatment through the proper adjustment of the core-shell morphology in ferrite particles, by controlling exchange and dipolar magnetic interactions at the nanoscale. Thus, core-shell nanoparticles with mutual coupling of magnetically hard (CoFe2O4) and soft (MnFe2O4) components are synthesized with facile synthetic controls resulting in uniform size and shell thickness as evidenced by high resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging, excellent crystallinity and size monodispersity. Such a magnetic coupling enables the fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy and magnetic interactions without sparing the good structural, chemical and colloidal stability. Consequently, the magnetic heating efficiency of CoFe2O4. and MnFe2O4 core-shell nanoparticles is distinctively different horn that of their counterparts, even though all these nanocrystals were synthesized under similar conditions. For better understanding of the AC magnetic hyperthermia response and its correlation with magnetic-origin features we study the effect of the volume ratio of magnetic hard and soft phases in the bimagnetic core-shell nanocrystals. Eventually, such particles may be considered as novel heating carriers that under further biomedical functionalization may become adaptable multifunctional heat-triggered nanoplatforms. Abstract |
We provide experimental evidence for the existence of ferromagnetism in bilayers of Pd/C-60 which is supported by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The observed ferromagnetism is surprising as C-60 and Pd films are both non-ferromagnetic in the non-interacting limit. Magnetization (M) versus applied field (H) data acquired at different temperatures (T) show magnetic hysteresis with typical coercive fields (H-c) on the order of 50 Oe. From the temperature-dependent magnetization M(T) we extract a Curie temperature (T-c >= 550 K) using Bloch-like power law extrapolations to high temperatures. Using DFT calculations we investigated all plausible scenarios for the interaction between the C-60 molecules and the Pd slabs, Pd single atoms and Pd clusters. DFT shows that while the C-60 molecules are nonmagnetic, Pd films have a degenerate ground state that subject to a weak perturbation, can become ferromagnetic. Calculations also show that the interaction of C-60 molecules with excess Pd atoms and with sharp edges of a Pd slab is the most likely configuration that render the system ferromagnetic Interestingly, the calculated charge transfer (0.016 e per surface Pd atom, 0.064 e per Pd for intimate contact region) between C-60 and Pd does not appear to play an important role. Abstract |
A microscopic Hamiltonian for interacting manganese impurities in dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is derived. It is shown that in p-type III-V DMS, the indirect exchange between Mn impurities has similarities with the Zener mechanism in transition metal oxides. Here the mobile and localized holes near the top of the valence band play the role of unoccupied p-orbitals which induce ferromagnetism. T-C estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with experiments on (Ga,Mn)As. The model is also applicable to the p-doped (Ga,Mn)P system. The magnetic ordering in n-type (Ga,Mn)N is due to exchange between the electrons localized on the levels lying deep in the forbidden energy gap. This mechanism is even closer to the original Zener mechanism. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
On the basis of a simplified Hamiltonian for transition metal impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS), the nature of ferromagnetism in p-type III-V DMS are investigated. Ferromagnetism is governed by the Anderson-Hubbard parameter for 3d electrons of Mn2+ and their strong hybridization with the hole carriers in the semiconducting medium. The origin of ferromagnetism in these materials has similarity with the Zener mechanism. From the energetically preferable parallel orientation of Mn spins the Curie temperature is calculated for GaAs:Mn. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. |

Abstract |
The relationships between incommensurability, charge ordering and magnetotransport properties in Nd0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites have been studied by electron diffraction and lattice imaging versus temperature with 0.02 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.07. All compositions show an incommensurate superstructure over the whole temperature domain, despite the fact that they are ferromagnetic and conductive below 140 K, The q-vector (1/2 – delta)a* decreases with increasing temperature for all compositions x. For a given temperature q also decreases with x. Lattice images obtained at low temperature give a clear view of the characteristics of the incommensurate structure. They also provide a better understanding of the charge ordering process. The low-temperature form of the Cr-doped manganites is not a perfectly doubled cell [[2a(p)root 2 x 2a(p) x a(p)root 2]], but defects inducing a tripled cell occur pseudo-periodically. Abstract |
Na2C is a novel two-dimensional material with Dirac Half-metal (DHM) characteristic, exhibiting a combination of single-spin massless Dirac fermions and half-semimetal. In this paper based on the first-principles calculations, we studied the mechanical, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of Na2C nanosheet. The elastic modulus of Na2C was measured to 18.5 N/m and isotropic, whereas it shows anisotropic tensile strengths of 2.85 and 2.04 N/m, for the loading along the zigzag and armchair directions, respectively. We found that Na2C, is a DHM with band gap of 0.7 eV in the up-spin channel and has 2 mu(B) magnetic moment per unit cell. In addition, we investigated the effects of number of atomic layers (thickness), electric field and strain on the possibility of further tuning of the electronic and magnetic properties of Na2C. Our calculations show that by increasing the number of layers from monolayer to bulk, a transition from DHM to ferromagnetic metal occurs with a high magnetic moments in the range of 16-30 mu(B). With applying an electric field on the Na2C bilayer (within the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic orders), energy band gap is slightly increased. In addition our results indicate that the electronic structure can be significantly modified by applying the mechanical straining. In this regard, under the biaxial strain (from 0% to – 8%) or large uniaxial strains (> – 6%), we observed the DHM to ferromagnetic-metal transition. Moreover, vacancy defects and atom substitutions can also effect the electronic and magnetic properties of Na2C nanosheet. Defective Na2C with single and double vacancies, was found to show the metallic response. With various atom substitutions this nanosheet exhibits; ferromagnetic-metal (Si and Be) with 5.2 and 3 mu(B); dilute-magnetic semiconductor (B and N) with 3 and 7 mu(B) magnetic moments, respectively. In the case of B or N atoms replacing the native C atom, the down-spin channel yields about 1 eV band gap. Interestingly, replacing the Na atoms in the native Na2C lattice with the Li can result in the formation of magnetic topological insulator phase with nontrivial band gap in the down-spin channel (25 meV and 0.15 eV) and up-spin channel (0.75 eV), in addition exhibit 8 mu(B) magnetic moment in the ground state. |

Abstract |
Novel stable ultra-thin phases of europium oxide are investigated by means of state-of-the-art first principles calculations. Total energy calculations show that single layers of EuO2 and Eu(OH)(2) can be stabilized in an octahedrally coordinated (1T) atomic structure. However, phonon calculations reveal that although both structures are energetically feasible, only the 1T-EuO2 phase has dynamical stability. The phonon spectrum of 1T-EuO2 displays three Raman active modes; a non-degenerate out-of-plane A(1g) mode at 353.5 cm(-1) and two doubly-degenerate in-plane E-g modes at 304.3 cm(-1). Furthermore, magnetic ground state and electronic band dispersion calculations show that the single layer EuO2 is a metal with net magnetic moment of 5(mu B) per unitcell resulting in a half-metallic ferrimagnetic behavior. Moreover, robustness of the half-metallic ferrimagnetic characteristics of EuO2 is confirmed by the application of electric field and charging. Single layer 1T-EuO2, with its stable ultra-thin structure and half-metallic ferrimagnetic feature, is a promising novel material for nanoscale electronic and spintronic applications. |

Abstract |
Highly ordered thiol-ethylene bridged Periodic Mesoporous Organosilicas were synthesized directly from a homemade thiol-functionalized bis-silane precursor. These high surface area materials contain up to 4.3 mmol/g sulfur functions in the walls and can adsorb up to 1183 mg/g mercury ions. Raman spectroscopy reveals the existence of thiol and disulfide moieties. These groups have been evaluated by a combination of Raman spectroscopy, Ellman’s reagent and elemental analysis. The adsorption of mercury ions was evidenced by different techniques, including Raman, XPS and porosimetry, which indicate that thiol groups are highly accessible to mercury. Scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with EDX showed an even homogenous distribution of the sulfur atoms throughout the structure, and have revealed for the first time that a fraction of the adsorbed mercury is forming thiolate nanocrystals in the pores. The adsorbent is highly selective for mercury and can be regenerated and reused multiple times, maintaining its structure and functionalities and showing only a marginal loss of adsorption capacity after several runs. |

Abstract |
Mesoporous MIL-101(Cr) is used as host for a ship-in-a-bottle type adsorbent for selective U(VI) recovery from aqueous environments. The acid-resistant cage-type MOF is built in-situ around N,N-Diisobutyl-2-(octylphenylphosphoryl)acetamide (CMPO), a sterically demanding ligand with high U(VI) affinity. This one-step procedure yields an adsorbent which is an ideal compromise between homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, where the ligand can act freely within the pores of MIL-101, without leaching, while the adsorbent is easy separable and reusable. The adsorbent was characterized by XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, XRF, ADF-STEM and EDX, to confirm and quantify the successful encapsulation of the CMPO in MIL-101, and the preservation of the host. Adsorption experiments with a central focus on U(VI) recovery were performed. Very high selectivity for U(VI) was observed, while competitive metal adsorption (rare earths, transition metals...) was almost negligible. The adsorption capacity was calculated at 5.32 mg U/g (pH 3) and 27.99 mg U/g (pH 4), by fitting equilibrium data to the Langmuir model. Adsorption kinetics correlated to the pseudo-second-order model, where more than 95% of maximum uptake is achieved within 375 min. The adsorbed U(VI) is easily recovered by desorption in 0.1 M HNO3. Three adsorption/desorption cycles were performed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
A falling film dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor combined with adsorption on activated carbon textile material was optimized to minimize the formation of hazardous oxidation by-products from the treatment of persistent pesticides (alachlor, diuron and isoproturon) in water. The formation of by-products and the reaction mechanism was investigated by HPLC-TOF-MS. The maximum concentration of each by-product was at least two orders of magnitude below the initial pesticide concentration, during the first 10 min of treatment. After 30 min of treatment, the individual by-product concentrations had decreased to values of at least three orders of magnitude below the initial pesticide concentration. The proposed oxidation pathways revealed five main oxidation steps: dechlorination, dealkylation, hydroxylation, addition of a double-bonded oxygen and nitrification. The latter is one of the main oxidation mechanisms of diuron and isoproturon for air plasma treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the formation of nitrificated intermediates is reported for the plasma treatment of non-phenolic compounds. |

Abstract |
The covalent triazine framework, CTF-1, served as host material for the in situ synthesis of Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The composite material consisted of 20 +/- 2 m% iron, mainly in gamma-Fe2O3 phase. The resulting gamma-Fe2O3@CTF-1 was examined for the adsorption of As-III, As-V and H-II from synthetic solutions and real surface-, ground- and wastewater. The material shows excellent removal efficiencies, independent from the presence of Ca2+, Mg2+ or natural organic matter and only limited dependency on the presence of phosphate ions. Its adsorption capacity towards arsenite (198.0 mg g(-1)), arsenate (102.3 mg g(-1)) and divalent mercury (165.8 mg g(-1)) belongs amongst the best-known adsorbents, including many other iron-based materials. Regeneration of the adsorbent can be achieved for use over multiple cycles without a decrease in performance by elution at 70 degrees C with 0.1 M NaOH, followed by a stirring step in a 5 m% H2O2 solution for As or 0.1 M thiourea and 0.001 M HCl for Hg. In highly contaminated water (100 mu gL(-1)), the adsorbent polishes the water quality to well below the current WHO limits. |

Abstract |
The emergence of micropollutants into our aquatic resources is regarded as an issue of increasing environmental concern. To protect the aquatic environment against further contamination with micropollutants, treatment with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is put forward as a promising technique. In this work, an innovative AOP based on electrical discharges in a continuous-flow pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor with falling water film over activated carbon textile is examined for its potential application in water treatment. The effect of various operational parameters including feed gas type, gas flow rate, water flow rate and power on removal and energy efficiency has been studied. To this end, a synthetic micropollutant mixture containing five pesticides (atrazine, alachlor, diuron, dichlorvos and pentachlorophenol), two pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine and 1,7-alpha-ethinylestradiol), and 1 plasticizer (bisphenol A) is used. While working under optimal conditions, energy consumption was situated in the range 2.42-4.25 kW h/m(3), which is about two times lower than the economically viable energy cost of AOPs (5 kW h/m(3)). Hence, the application of non-thermal plasma could be regarded as a promising alternative AOP for (industrial) wastewater remediation. |

Abstract |
The aqueous phase electrochemical degradation of nalidixic acid (NAL) is studied in this work, using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) as instrumental techniques. The promotional effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on the the performance of glassy carbon electrodes is demonstrated, being observed that these materials catalyze the NAL reduction. The effect of surface functional groups on MWCNT −MWCNT-COOH and MWCNT-NH2was also studied. The modification of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with MWCNT leads to an improved performance for NAL reduction following the order of MWCNT > MWCNT-NH2 > MWCNT-COOH. The best behavior at MWCNT-GCE is mainly due to both the increased electrode active area and the enhanced MWCNT adsorption properties. The NAL degradation was carried out under optimal conditions (pH = 5.0, deposition time = 20 s and volume of MWCNT = 10 μL) using MWCNT-GCE obtaining an irreversible reduction of NAL to less toxic products. Paramaters as the number of DPV cycles and the volume/area (V/A) ratio were optimized for maximize pollutant degradation. It was observed that after 15 DPV scans and V/A = 8, a complete reduction was obtained, obtaining two sub-products identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS). |

Abstract |
Co-adsorption of norfloxacin (Nor) and Cu(II) on montmorillonite at pH 4.5, 7.0 and 9.0 was studied by integrated batch adsorption experiments and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Under such pH conditions the dominant species of Nor are cation (Nor+), zwitterion (Nor±), and anion (Nor−), respectively. Results indicated that Nor sorption decreased with an increase of solution pH. The presence of Cu(II) slightly suppressed the Nor+ sorption at pH 4.5, while increased Nor± and Nor−sorption on montmorillonite at pH 7.0 and 9.0, respectively. In contrast, Nor increased Cu(II) adsorption at pH 4.5, but had little effect on the adsorption of Cu(II) on montmorillonite at pH 7.0 and 9.0. Spectroscopic results showed that, at pH 4.5, Nor+ was sorbed on montmorillonite by the formation of outer-sphere montmorilloniteNorCu(II) ternary surface complex. At pH 7.0, montmorilloniteNorCu(II) and montmorilloniteCu(II)Nor ternary surface complexes co-exist. At pH 9.0, montmorilloniteCu(II)Nor ternary surface complex was likely formed, which was different to Cu(II)(Nor)2 precipitate of the solution. |

Abstract |
We studied the morphology of ramps in REBa2CU3O7 (REBCO) epitaxial films on SrTiO3 substrates, fabricated by RF magnetron sputter deposition and pulsed laser deposition (PLD), by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The ramps were fabricated by Ar ion beam etching using masks of standard photoresist and TIN. AFM-studies on ramps in sputter deposited films show a strong dependence, i.e. formation of facets and ridges, on the angle of incidence of the ion beam with respect to the substrate surface as well as the rotation angle with respect to the crystal axes of the substrate. Ramps in pulsed laser deposited films did not show this dependence, Furthermore, we studied the effect of an anneal step prior to the deposition of barrier layers (i.e. PrBa2CU3O7, SrTiO3, CeO2) on the ramp. First results show a recrystallization of the ramp surface, resulting in terraces and a non-homogeneous growth of the barrier material on top of it. The thickness variations, for thin layers of barrier material, con even become much larger than expected from the amount of deposited material and are dependent on the deposition and anneal conditions. HREM studies show a well defined interface between barrier layer and electrodes. The angle of the ramp depends on the etch rate of the mask and REBCO, and on the angle of incidence of the ion beam. TiN has a much lower etch rate compared to photoresist, resulting in an angle of the ramp comparable to the angle of incidence, resulting in a low etching rate on the ramp. These results will lead to improved electrical characteristics of ramp-type junctions. |

Abstract |
The giant isotope effect on the ferro- and antiferroelectric transition temperature upon deuteration of hydrogen-bonded systems is well known experimentally since various decades. Yet, theoretically only recently a microscopic understanding of this effect has been achieved which, specifically, took into account the geometry of the O ... H ... O bond. The implications of this modeling are multiple as numerous hydrogen-bonded organic systems show the same effects as ferro- and antiferroelectrics, i.e., cooperative proton tunneling at a well-defined temperature. |

Abstract |
(Sr1-xCax)(33)Bi-24,partial derivative Al48O141+3 partial derivative/2 fullerenoid solid solutions have been synthesized and the effect of partial substitution of Sr by Ca has been characterized by (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, applying different imaging methods. Most of the defects commonly observed in face centered cubic compounds, have also been observed in (Sr1-xCax)(33)Bi24-partial derivative Al48O141+3 partial derivative/2. Based on purely geometrical and topological models, structural presentations for the coherent twin boundaries and stacking faults have been constructed on the basis of complex spherical “Al84O210” units. The results are compared to defects observed in the crystallite fullerite C-60. |
