Title Accuracy of the Hartree-Fock method for Wigner molecules at high magnetic fields Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication European physical journal : D : atomic, molecular and optical physics Abbreviated Journal (down) Eur Phys J D
  Volume 28 Issue 3 Pages 373-380

Abstract Few-electron systems confined in two-dimensional parabolic quantum dots at high magnetic fields are studied by the Hartree-Fock (HF) and exact diagoiialization methods. A generalized multicenter Gaussian basis is proposed in the HF method. A comparison of the HF and exact, results allows as to discuss the relevance of the symmetry of the charge density distribution for the accuracy of the HF method. It is shown that the energy estimates obtained with the broken-symmetry HF wave functions become exact in the infinite magnetic-field limit. In this limit the charge density of the broken-symmetry solution call be identified with the classical charge distribution.

Title Dynamic and static phases of vortices under an applied drive in a superconducting stripe with an array of weak links Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication European physical journal : B : condensed matter and complex systems Abbreviated Journal (down) Eur Phys J B

Abstract Static and dynamic properties of superconducting vortices in a superconducting stripe with a periodic array of weakly-superconducting (or normal metal) regions are studied in the presence of external magnetic and electric fields. The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory is used to describe the electronic transport, where the anisotropy is included through the spatially-dependent critical temperature T-c. Superconducting vortices penetrating into the weak-superconducting region with smaller T-c are more mobile than the ones in the strong superconducting regions. We observe periodic entrance and exit of vortices which reside in the weak link for some short interval. The mobility of the weakly-pinned vortices can be reduced by increasing the uniform applied magnetic field leading to distinct features in the voltage vs. magnetic field response of the system.

Title Ginzburg-Landau theory and effects of pressure on a two-band superconductor : application to MgB2 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2003 Publication European physical journal : B : condensed matter and complex systems Abbreviated Journal (down) Eur Phys J B
  Volume 31 Issue 3 Pages 349-354
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We present a model of pressure effects of a two-band superconductor based on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy with two order parameters. The parameters of the theory are pressure as well as temperature dependent. New pressure effects emerge as a result of the competition between the two bands. The theory then is applied to MgB2. We identify two possible scenaria regarding the fate of the two Q subbands under pressure, depending on whether or not both subbands are above the Fermi energy at ambient pressure. The splitting of the two subbands is probably caused by the E-2g, distortion. If only one subband is above the Fermi energy at ambient pressure (scenario I), application of pressure diminishes the splitting and it is possible that the lower subband participates in the superconductivity. The corresponding crossover pressure and Gruneisen parameter are estimated. In the second scenario both bands start above the Fermi energy and they move below it, either by pressure or via the substitution of Mg by Al. In both scenaria, the possibility of electronical topological transition is emphasized. Experimental signatures of both scenaria are presented and existing experiments are discussed in the light of the different physical pictures.

Title Hamiltonian of a many-electron system with single-electron and electron-pair states in a two-dimensional periodic potential Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Based on the metastable electron-pair energy band in a two-dimensional (2D) periodic potential obtained previously by Hai and Castelano [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 26, 115502 (2014)], we present in this work a Hamiltonian of many electrons consisting of single electrons and electron pairs in the 2D system. The electron-pair states are metastable of energies higher than those of the single-electron states at low electron density. We assume two different scenarios for the single-electron band. When it is considered as the lowest conduction band of a crystal, we compare the obtained Hamiltonian with the phenomenological model Hamiltonian of a boson-fermion mixture proposed by Friedberg and Lee [Phys. Rev. B 40, 6745 (1989)]. Single-electron-electron-pair and electron-pair-electron-pair interaction terms appear in our Hamiltonian and the interaction potentials can be determined from the electron-electron Coulomb interactions. When we consider the single-electron band as the highest valence band of a crystal, we show that holes in this valence band are important for stabilization of the electron-pair states in the system.

Title Effect of ordered array of magnetic dots on the dynamics of Josephson vortices in stacked SNS Josephson junctions under DC and AC current Type A1 Journal article
Year 2015 Publication European physical journal : B : condensed matter and complex systems Abbreviated Journal (down) Eur Phys J B
  Volume 88 Issue 88 Pages 286
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We use the anisotropic time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory to investigate the effect of a square array of out-of-plane magnetic dots on the dynamics of Josephson vortices (fluxons) in artificial stacks of superconducting-normal-superconducting (SNS) Josephson junctions in the presence of external DC and AC currents. Periodic pinning due to the magnetic dots distorts the triangular lattice of fluxons and results in the appearance of commensurability features in the current-voltage characteristics of the system. For the larger values of the magnetization, additional peaks appear in the voltage-time characteristics of the system due to the creation and annihilation of vortex-antivortex pairs. Peculiar changes in the response of the system to the applied current is found resulting in a “superradiant” vortex-flow state at large current values, where a rectangular lattice of moving vortices is formed. Synchronizing the motion of fluxons by adding a small ac component to the biasing dc current is realized. However, we found that synchronization becomes difficult for large magnetization of the dots due to the formation of vortex-antivortex pairs.

Title Anharmonic effects on thermodynamic properties of a graphene monolayer Type A1 Journal article

Abstract We extend the unsymmetrized self-consistent-field method (USF) for anharmonic crystals to layered non-Bravais crystals to investigate structural, dynamical and thermodynamic properties of a free-standing graphene monolayer. In this theory, the main anharmonicity of the crystal lattice has been included and the quantum corrections are taken into account in an h-expansion for the one-particle density matrix. The obtained result for the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of graphene shows a strong temperature dependence and agrees with experimental results by Bao et al. (Nat. Nanotechnol., 4 (2009) 562). The obtained value of TEC at room temperature (300 K) is -6.4 x 10(- 6) K- 1 and it becomes positive for T > T-alpha = 358K. We find that quantum effects are significant for T < 1000 K. The interatomic distance, effective amplitudes of the graphene lattice vibrations, adiabatic and isothermal bulk moduli, isobaric and isochoric heat capacities are also calculated and their temperature dependences are determined.   Abstract We show how snake-orbit states which run along a magnetic edge can be confined electrically. We consider a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) confined into a quantum wire, subjected to a strong perpendicular and steplike magnetic field B/ − B. Close to this magnetic step, new, spatially confined bound states arise as a result of the lateral confinement and the magnetic-field step. The number of states, with energy below the first Landau level, increases as B becomes stronger or as the wire width becomes larger. These bound states can be understood as an interference between two counter-propagating one-dimensional snake-orbit states.

Abstract Charge carriers in single and multilayered graphene systems behave as chiral particles due to the particular lattice symmetry of the crystal. We show that the interplay between the meta-material properties of graphene multilayers and the pseudospinorial properties of the charge carriers result in the occurrence of Klein and anti-Klein tunneling for rhombohedral stacked multilayers. We derive an algebraic formula predicting the angles at which these phenomena occur and support this with numerical calculations for systems up to four layers. We present a decomposition of an arbitrarily stacked multilayer into pseudospin doublets that have the same properties as rhombohedral systems with a lower number of layers.   Abstract Recently fabricated single-crystalline atomically flat metallic nanofilms are in fact quantum-engineered multiband superconductors. Here the multiband structure is dictated by the nanofilm thickness through the size quantization of the electron motion perpendicular to the nanofilm. This opens the unique possibility to explore superconductivity in well-controlled multi-band systems. However, a serious obstacle is the absence of a convenient and manageable theoretical tool to access new physical phenomena in such quasi-two-dimensional systems, including interplay of quantum confinement and fluctuations. Here we cover this gap and construct the appropriate multiband Ginzburg-Landau functional for nano-thin superconductors. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2013

Abstract An energy level diagram is constructed on the basis of a microscopic Hamiltonian proposed for a description of interacting manganese impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS). It is shown that ferromagnetism in p-type III-V DMS is governed by the strong hybridization of Mn2+-electrons with the mobile holes and localized states near the top of the valence band. The Curie temperature estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with the experiments on GaAs:Mn. The model is also applicable to the GaP:Mn system.

Abstract Pinning of magnetic-field-induced Wigner molecules (WMs) confined in parabolic two-dimensional quantum dots by a charged defect is studied by an exact diagonalization approach. We found a re-entrant pinning of the WMs as a function of the magnetic field, a magnetic-field-induced re-orientation of the WMs and a qualitatively different pinning behaviour in the presence of a positive and negative Coulomb impurity.

  Volume 92 Issue 1 Pages 17004

Abstract We show that in presence of an applied external field the two-component order parameter superconductor falls in two categories of ground states, namely, in the traditional Abrikosov ground state or in a new ground state fitted to describe a superconducting layer with texture, that is, patched regions separated by a phase difference of pi. The existence of these two kinds of ground states follows from the sole assumption that the total supercurrent is the sum of the two individual supercurrents and is independent of any consideration about the free energy expansion. Uniquely defined relations between the current density and the superfluid density hold for these two ground states, which also determine the magnetization in terms of average values of the order parameters. Because these ground-state conditions are also Bogomolny equations we construct the free energy for the two-component superconductor which admits the Bogomolny solution at a special coupling value.   Abstract We investigate a scattering of electron which is injected individually into an empty ballistic channel containing a cavity that is Coulomb coupled to a quantum ring charged with a single electron. We solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the electron pair with an exact account for the electron-electron correlation. Absorption of energy and angular momentum by the quantum ring is not an even function of the external magnetic field. As a consequence we find that the electron backscattering probability is asymmetric in the magnetic field and thus violates Onsager symmetry.

Abstract In the framework of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism, we study the dynamics of vortex-antivortex (V-Av) pairs in mesoscopic symmetric and asymmetric superconducting loops under an applied ac current. In contrast to the case of a constant biasing dc current, the process of the V-Av collision and annihilation is strongly affected by the time-periodic ac signal. As the direction of the applied ac current is reversed, the existed V-Av pair moves backward and then collides with a new created Av-V pair in a symmetric loop. In the presence of an appropriate external magnetic field, a novel sinusoidal-like oscillatory mode of the magnetization curve is observed, and the periodic dynamical process of the V-Av annihilation occurs in both branches of the sample. Moreover, for the asymmetric sample with an off-centered hole the creation point of the V-Av pair shifts away from the center of the sample, and the creation and annihilation dynamics of V-Av pairs turns out to be very different from the symmetric case.
