Abstract: Nb-rich precipitates in the matrix of as-cast and annealed Ni45.5Ti45.5Nb9 alloys are investigated by scanning and scanning transmission electron microscopy, including slice-and-view and geometric phase analysis (GPA). The Nb-rich bcc nano-precipitates in the as-cast alloy have a 10% lattice parameter difference with the B2 matrix and reveal compensating interface dislocations. The 3D reconstruction of the configuration of small Nb-rich precipitates in the annealed alloy reveals a wall-like distribution of precipitates, which may increase the thermal hysteresis of the material.

Abstract: Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16, the complex selenite chloride of cesium and neodymium, was synthesized in the NdOCl-SeO2-CsCl system. The compound has been characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, luminescence spectroscopy, and second-harmonic-generation techniques. Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 crystallizes in an orthorhombic unit cell with a = 15.911(1) angstrom, b = 15.951(1) angstrom, and c = 25.860(1) angstrom and a noncentrosymmetric space group Pna2(1) (No. 33). The crystal structure of Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 can be represented as a stacking of Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12) lamellas and CsCl-like layers. Because of the layered nature of the Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 structure, it features numerous planar defects originating from occasionally missing the CsCl-like layer and violating the perfect stacking of the Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 lamellas. Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 represents the first example of a noncentrosymmetric structure among alkaline-metal lanthanide selenite halides. Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 demonstrates luminescence emission in the near-IR region with reduced efficiency due to a high concentration of Nd3+ ions causing nonradiative cross-relaxation.

Abstract: Objective: We aim to investigate if anatomical and functional properties of the upper airway using computerized 3D models derived from computed tomography (CT) scans better predict obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity than standard clinical markers. Methods: Consecutive children with suspected OSA underwent polysomnography, clinical assessment of upper airway patency, and a CT scan while awake. A three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the pharyngeal airway was built from these images, and computational fluid dynamics modeling of low inspiratory flow was performed using open-source software. Results: Thirty-three children were included (23 boys; mean age, was 6.0 +/- 3.2 y). OSA was diagnosed in 23 patients. Children with OSA had a significantly lower volume of the overlap region between tonsils and the adenoids (median volume, 1408 mm compared to 2173 mm; p = 0.04), a lower mean cross-sectional area at this location (median volume, 69.3 mm(2) compared to 114.3 mm(2); p = 0.04), and a lower minimal cross-sectional area (median volume, 17.9 mm(2) compared to 25.9 mm(2); p = 0.05). Various significant correlations were found between several imaging parameters and the severity of OSA, most pronounced for upper airway conductance (r = -0.46) (p < 0.01) for correlation between upper airway conductance and the apnea-hypopnea index. No differences or significant correlations were observed with clinical parameters of upper airway patency. Preliminary data after treatment showed that none of the patients with residual OSA had their smallest cross-sectional area located in segment 3, and this frequency was significantly lower than in their peers whose sleep study normalized (64%; p = 0.05). Conclusion: Functional imaging parameters are highly correlated with OSA severity and are a more powerful correlate than clinical scores of upper airway patency. Preliminary data also showed that we could identify differences in the upper airway of those subjects who did not benefit from a local upper airway treatment. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: Nanometer sized ZnO clusters are produced in the gas phase and subsequently deposited on clean Au(111) surfaces under ultra-high vacuum conditions. The zinc blende atomic structure of the approximately spherical ZnO clusters is resolved by high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The large band gap and weak n-type conductivity of individual clusters are determined by scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures. The conduction band is found to exhibit clear quantization into discrete energy levels, which can be related to finite-size effects reflecting the zero-dimensional confinement. Our findings illustrate that gas phase cluster production may provide unique possibilities for the controlled fabrication of high purity quantum dots and heterostructures that can be size selected prior to deposition on the desired substrate under controlled ultra-high vacuum conditions.

Abstract: Determining the structure-to-property relationship of materials becomes particularly challenging when the material under investigation is dominated by defects and structural disorder. Knowledge on the exact atomic arrangement at the defective structure is required to understand its influence on the functional properties. However, standard diffraction techniques deliver structural information that is averaged over many unit cells. In particular, information about defects and order-disorder phenomena is contained in the coherent diffuse scattering intensity which often is difficult to uniquely interpret. Thus, the examination of the local disorder in materials requires a direct method to study their structure on the atomic level with chemical sensitivity. Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy in combination with atomic-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy, we show that the controversial structural arrangement of the Fe2O2+delta layers in the mixed ionic-electronic conducting Sr4Fe6O12+delta perovskite can be unambiguously resolved. Our results provide direct experimental evidence for the presence of a nanomixture of “ordered” and “disordered” domains in an epitaxial Sr4Fe6O12+delta thin film. The most favorable arrangement is the disordered structure and is interpreted as a randomly occurring but well-defined local shift of the Fe-O chains in the Fe2O2+delta layers. By analyzing the electron energy-loss near-edge structure of the different building blocks in the Sr4Fe6O12+delta unit cell we find that the mobile holes in this mixed ionic-electronic conducting oxide are highly localized in the Fe2O2+delta layers, which are responsible for the oxide-ion conductivity. A possible link between disorder and oxygen-ion transport along the Fe2O2+delta layers is proposed by arguing that the disorder can effectively break the oxygen diffusion pathways.

Abstract: We study the mobility of Dirac fermions in monolayer graphene on a GaAs substrate, limited by the combined action of the extrinsic potential of piezoelectric surface acoustical phonons of GaAs (PA) and of the intrinsic deformation potential of acoustical phonons in graphene (DA). In the high-temperature (T) regime, the momentum relaxation rate exhibits the same linear dependence on T but different dependencies on the carrier density n, corresponding to the mobility mu proportional to 1 root n and 1/n, respectively for the PA and DA scattering mechanisms. In the low-T Bloch-Gruneisen regime, the mobility shows the same square-root density dependence mu proportional to root n, but different temperature dependencies mu proportional to T-3 and T-4, respectively for PA and DA phonon scattering. Abstract: The instability of a free-standing one-sided hydrogenated/fluorinated graphene nanoribbon, i.e., graphone/fluorographene, is studied using ab initio, semiempirical, and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Free-standing semi-infinite armchairlike hydrogenated/fluorinated graphene (AC-GH/AC-GF) and boatlike hydrogenated/fluorinated graphene (B-GH/B-GF) (nanoribbons which are periodic along the zigzag direction) are unstable and spontaneously transform into spiral structures. We find that rolled, spiral B-GH and B-GF are energetically more favorable than spiral AC-GH and AC-GF which is opposite to the double-sided flat hydrogenated/fluorinated graphene, i.e., graphane/fluorographene. We found that the packed, spiral structures exhibit an unexpected localized highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest occupied molecular orbital at the edges with increasing energy gap during rolling. These rolled hydrocarbon structures are stable beyond room temperature up to at least T = 1000 K within our simulation time of 1 ns. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.075448

Abstract: Sputtered nanocrystalline palladium thin films with nanoscale growth twins have been subjected to hydriding cycles. The evolution of the twin boundaries has been investigated using high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Surprisingly, the Sigma 3{112} incoherent twin boundaries dissociate after hydriding into two phase boundaries bounding a 9R phase. This phase which corresponds to single stacking faults located every three {111} planes in the fcc Pd structure was not expected because of the high stacking fault energy of Pd. This observation is connected to the influence of the Hydrogen on the stacking fault energy of palladium and the high compressive stresses building up during hydriding. Abstract: Electron vortex beams carrying intrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM) are produced in electron microscopes where they are controlled and focused by using magnetic lenses. We observe various rotational phenomena arising from the interaction between the OAM and magnetic lenses. First, the Zeeman coupling, proportional to the OAM and magnetic field strength, produces an OAM-independent Larmor rotation of a mode superposition inside the lens. Second, when passing through the focal plane, the electron beam acquires an additional Gouy phase dependent on the absolute value of the OAM. This brings about the Gouy rotation of the superposition image proportional to the sign of the OAM. A combination of the Larmor and Gouy effects can result in the addition (or subtraction) of rotations, depending on the OAM sign. This behavior is unique to electron vortex beams and has no optical counterpart, as Larmor rotation occurs only for charged particles. Our experimental results are in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.

Abstract: Neutral excitons in strained axially symmetric In(Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots with a ringlike shape are investigated. Similar to experimental self-assembled quantum rings, the analyzed quantum dots have volcano-like shapes. The continuum mechanical model is employed to determine the strain distribution, and the single-band envelope function approach is adopted to compute the electron states. The hole states are determined by the axially symmetric multiband Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian, and the exciton states are obtained from an exact diagonalization. We found that the presence of the inner layer covering the ring opening enhances the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations. The reason is that the hole becomes mainly localized in the inner part of the quantum dot due to strain, whereas the electron resides mainly inside the ring-shaped rim. Interestingly, larger AB oscillations are found in the analyzed quantum dot than in a fully opened quantum ring of the same width. Comparison with the unstrained ringlike quantum dot shows that the amplitude of the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are almost doubled in the presence of strain. The computed oscillations of the exciton energy levels are comparable in magnitude to the oscillations measured in recent experiments. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.085314

Abstract: The magnetic properties of manganite bilayers composed of G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrMnO3 and double-exchange ferromagnetic (FM) La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 are studied. A spin-glass state is observed as a result of competing magnetic orders and spin frustration at the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrMnO3 interface. The dependence of the irreversible temperature on the cooling magnetic field follows the Almeida-Thouless line. Although an ideal G-type AFM SrMnO3 is featured with a compensated spin configuration, the bilayers exhibit exchange bias below the spin glass freezing temperature, which is much lower than the Néel temperature of SMO, indicating that the exchange bias is strongly correlated with the spin glass state. The results indicate that the spin frustration that originates from the competition between the AFM super-exchange and the FM double-exchange interactions can induce a strong magnetic anisotropy at the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrMnO3 interface.

Abstract: We report a method to reliably count the number of atoms from high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy images. A model-based analysis of the experimental images is used to measure scattering cross sections at the atomic level. The high sensitivity of these measurements in combination with a thorough statistical analysis enables us to count atoms with single-atom sensitivity. The validity of the results is confirmed by means of detailed image simulations. We will show that the method can be applied to nanocrystals of arbitrary shape, size, and atom type without the need for a priori knowledge about the atomic structure.

Abstract: Uranyl fluoride particles produced via hydrolysis of uranium hexafluoride have been deposited on different substrates: polished graphite disks, silver foil, stainless steel and gold-coated silicon wafer, and measured with micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS). All three metallic substrates enhanced the Raman signal delivered by UO2F2 in comparison to graphite. The fundamental stretching of the UO band appeared at 867 cm−1 in case of the graphite substrate, while in case of the others it was shifted to lower frequencies (down to 839 cm−1). All applied metallic substrates showed the expected effect of Raman signal enhancement; however the gold layer appeared to be most effective. Application of new substrates provides more information on the molecular structure of uranyl fluoride precipitation, which is interesting for nuclear safeguards and nuclear environmental analysis.

Abstract: We present a computational study for the conversion of CH4 and CO2 into value-added chemicals, i.e., the so-called dry reforming of methane, in a dielectric barrier discharge reactor. A zero-dimensional chemical kinetics model is applied to study the plasma chemistry in a 1:1 CH4/CO2 mixture. The calculations are first performed for one microdischarge pulse and its afterglow, to study in detail the chemical pathways of the conversion. Subsequently, long time-scale simulations are carried out, corresponding to real residence times in the plasma, assuming a large number of consecutive microdischarge pulses, to mimic the conditions of the filamentary discharge regime in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The conversion of CH4 and CO2 as well as the selectivity of the formed products and the energy cost and energy efficiency of the process are calculated and compared to experiments for a range of different powers and gas flows, and reasonable agreement is reached.

Abstract: Organic photovoltaics (OPV) have developed into a vast research area. Progress in various directions has made it difficult to monitor the technology's precise development state. We offer a patent landscape analysis over all OPV devices, their substrates and encapsulation materials to provide an overview of patenting activity from a historical, organizational, geographical and technological point of view. Such an exercise is instrumental for private companies and research institutes aiming at both internal or external technology creation. We discuss our findings in the context of the Industrial Life Cycle model and find OPV still residing in the fluid technology development phase. Technology development is still following an exponential growth path, with the majority of patents coming from the Asian continent and in general private companies. For devices, the main technological focus can be traced back to the “H01L-031” international patent classification (IPC) main group. For the queried substrates, the most attention has gone to glass, but paper and textile have drawn significant interest too. Finally, encapsulation is found to be a less mature research field given the smaller number of patent families. The latter shows that the technology has not matured to the level where processing is carried out on a commercial scale. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
