Abstract: Thermal expansion behavior of two-dimensional (2D) nitrides and graphene were studied by ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations as well as quasiharmonic approximation (QHA). Anharmonicity of the acoustic phonon modes are related to the unusual negative thermal expansion (NTE) behavior of the nitrides. Our results also hint that direct ab initio MD simulations are a more elaborate method to investigate thermal expansion behavior of 2D materials than the QHA. Nevertheless, giant NTE coefficients are found for h-GaN and h-AlN within the covered temperature range 100-600 K regardless of the chosen computational method. This unusual NTE of 2D nitrides is reasoned with the out-of-plane oscillations related to the rippling behavior of the monolayers.

Abstract: The electronic and optical properties of vertical heterostructures (HTSs) and lateral heterojunctions (HTJs) between (B,N)-codoped graphene (dop@Gr) and graphene (Gr), C3N, BC3 and h-BN monolayers are investigated using van der Waals density functional theory calculations. We have found that all the considered HTSs are energetically and thermally feasible at room temperature, and therefore they can be synthesized experimentally. The dop@Gr/Gr, BC3/dop@Gr and BN/dop@Gr HTSs are semiconductors with direct bandgaps of 0.1 eV, 80 meV and 1.23 eV, respectively, while the C3N/dop@Gr is a metal because of the strong interaction between dop@Gr and C3N layers. On the other hand, the dop@Gr-Gr and BN-dop@Gr HTJs are semiconductors, whereas the C3N-dop@Gr and BC3-dop@Gr HTJs are metals. The proposed HTSs can enhance the absorption of light in the whole wavelength range as compared to Gr and BN monolayers. The applied electric field or pressure strain changes the bandgaps of the HTSs and HTJs, indicating that these HTSs are highly promising for application in nanoscale multifunctional devices.

Abstract: We calculate the Curie temperature of layered ferromagnets, chromium tri-iodide (CrI3), chromium tri-bromide (CrBr3), chromium germanium tri-telluride (CrGeTe3), and the Ned temperature of a layered antiferromagnet iron di-chloride (FeCl2), using first-principles density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. We develop a computational method to model the magnetic interactions in layered magnetic materials and calculate their critical temperature. We provide a unified method to obtain the magnetic exchange parameters (J) for an effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian from first principles, taking into account both the magnetic ansiotropy as well as the out-of-plane interactions. We obtain the magnetic phase change behavior, in particular the critical temperature, from the susceptibility and the specific-heat, calculated using the three-dimensional Monte Carlo (METROPOLIS) algorithm. The calculated Curie temperatures for ferromagnetic materials (CrI3, CrBr3, and CrGeTe3), match well with experimental values. We show that the interlayer interaction in bulk CrI3 with R (3) over bar stacking is significantly stronger than the C2/m stacking, in line with experimental observations. We show that the strong interlayer interaction in R (3) over bar CrI3 results in a competition between the in-plane and the out-of-plane magnetic easy axes. Finally, we calculate the Ned temperature of FeCl2 to be 47 +/- 8 K and show that the magnetic phase transition in FeCl2 occurs in two steps with a high-temperature intralayer ferromagnetic phase transition and a low-temperature interlayer antiferromagnetic phase transition.

Abstract: Very recently, the 2D form of MoSi2N4 has been successfully fabricated (Hong et al 2020 Science 369 670). Motivated by these recent experimental results, we investigate the structural, mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical properties of the MoSi2N4 monolayer. The mechanical study confirms the stability of the MoSi2N4 monolayer. The Young's modulus decreases by similar to 30%, while the Poisson's ratio increases by similar to 30% compared to the corresponding values of graphene. In addition, the MoSi2N4 monolayer's work function is very similar to that of phosphorene and MoS2 monolayers. The electronic structure shows that the MoSi2N4 monolayer is an indirect semiconductor with a band gaps of 1.79 (2.35) eV using the GGA (HSE06) functional. The thermoelectric performance of the MoSi2N4 monolayer has been revealed and a figure of merit slightly larger than unity at high temperatures is calculated. The optical analysis shows that the first absorption peak for in-plane polarization is located in the visible range of the spectrum, therefore, the MoSi2N4 monolayer is a promising candidate for advanced optoelectronic nanodevices. In summary, the fascinating MoSi2N4 monoloayer is a promising 2D material for many applications due to its unique physical properties.

Abstract: We study the ratchet effect in a narrow pinning-free superconductive ring based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations. Voltage responses to external dc and ac currents at various magnetic fields are studied. Due to asymmetric barriers for flux penetration and flux exit in the ring-shaped superconductor, the critical current above which the flux-flow state is reached, as well as the critical current for the transition to the normal state, are different for the two directions of applied current. These effects cooperatively cause ratchet signal reversal at high magnetic fields, which has not been reported to date in a pinning-free system. The ratchet signal found here is larger than those induced by asymmetric pinning potentials. Our results also demonstrate the feasibility of using mesoscopic superconductors to employ a superconducting diode effect in versatile superconducting devices.

Abstract: In this study, the structural, electronic and optical properties of theoretically predicted C6N monolayer structure are investigated by means of Density Functional Theory-based First-Principles Calculations. Phonon band dispersion calculations and molecular dynamics simulations reveal the dynamical and thermal stability of the C6N single-layer structure. We found out that the C6N monolayer has large negative in-plane Poisson's ratios along both X and Y direction and the both values are almost four times that of the famous-pentagraphene. The electronic structure shows that C6N monolayer is a semi-metal and has a Dirac-point in the BZ. The optical analysis using the random phase approximation method constructed over HSE06 illustrates that the first peak of absorption coefficient of the C6N monolayer along all polarizations is located in the IR range of spectrum, while the second absorption peak occurs in the visible range, which suggests its potential applications in optical and electronic devices. Interestingly, optically anisotropic character of this system is highly desirable for the design of polarization-sensitive photodetectors. Thermoelectric properties such as Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, electronic thermal conductivity and power factor are investigated as a function of carrier doping at temperatures 300, 400, and 500 K. In general, we predict that the C6N monolayer could be a new platform for study of novel physical properties in two-dimensional semi-metal materials, which may provide new opportunities to realize high-speed low-dissipation devices.

Abstract: Transition metal dichalcogenides, intercalated with transition metals, are studied for their potential applications as dilute magnetic semiconductors. We investigate the magnetic properties of WSe2 doped with third-row transition metals (Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ti and V). Using density functional theory in combination with Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain an estimate of the Curie or Neel temperature. We find that the magnetic ordering is highly dependent on the dopant type. While Ti and Cr-doped WSe2 have a ferromagnetic ground state, V, Mn, Fe and Co-doped WSe2 are antiferromagnetic in their ground state. For Fe doped WSe2, we find a high Curie-temperature of 327 K. In the case of V-doped WSe2, we find that there are two distinct magnetic phase transitions, originating from a frustrated in-plane antiferromagnetic exchange interaction and a ferromagnetic out-of-plane interaction. We calculate the formation energy and reveal that, in contrast to earlier reports, the formation energy is positive for the intercalated systems studied here. We also show that in the presence of W-vacancies, it becomes favorable for Ti, Fe, and Co to intercalate in WSe2.

Abstract: The time evolution of a low-energy two-dimensional Gaussian wave packet in ABC-stacked n-layer graphene (ABC-NLG) is investigated. Expectation values of the position (x, y) of center-of-mass and the total probability densities of the wave packet are calculated analytically using the Green's function method. These results are confirmed using an alternative numerical method based on the split-operator technique within the Dirac approach for ABC-NLG, which additionally allows to include external fields and potentials. The main features of the zitterbewegung (trembling motion) of wave packets in graphene are demonstrated and are found to depend not only on the wave packet width and initial pseudospin polarization, but also on the number of layers. Moreover, the analytical and numerical methods proposed here allow to investigate wave packet dynamics in graphene systems with an arbitrary number of layers and arbitrary potential landscapes.

Abstract: First-principles calculations are performed in order to investigate the formation of Janus structures of single layer TaSe2. The structural optimizations and phonon band dispersions reveal that the formation and stability of hydrogenated (HTaSe2), fluorinated (FTaSe2), and the one-side hydrogenated and one-side fluorinated (Janus-HTaSe2F) single-layers are feasible in terms of their phonon band dispersions. It is shown that bare metallic single-layer TaSe2 can be turned into a semiconductor as only one of its surface is functionalized while it remains as a metal via its two surfaces functionalization. In addition, the semiconducting nature of single-layers HTaSe2 and FTaSe2 and the metallic behavior of Janus TaSe2 are found to be robust under applied uniaxal strains. Further analysis on piezoelectric properties of the predicted single-layers reveal the enhanced in-plane and out of-plane piezoelectricity via formed Janus-HTaSe2F. Our study indicates that single-layer TaSe2 is a suitable host material for surface functionalization via fluorination and hydrogenation which exhibit distinctive electronic and vibrational properties.

Abstract: The flexoelectric and electronic properties of zig-zag graphene nanoribbons are explored under mechanical bending using state of the art first principles calculations. A linear dependence of the bending induced out of plane polarization on the applied strain gradient is found. The inferior flexoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons can be improved by more than two orders of magnitude by hydrogen and fluorine functionalization (CH and CF nanoribbons). A large out of plane flexoelectric effect is predicted for CF nanoribbons. The origin of this enhancement lies in the electro-negativity difference between carbon and fluorine atoms, which breaks the out of plane charge symmetry even for a small strain gradient. The flexoelectric effect can be further improved by co-functionalization with hydrogen and fluorine (CHF Janus-type nanoribbon), where a spontaneous out of plane dipole moment is formed even for flat nanoribbons. We also find that bending can control the charge localization of valence band maxima and therefore enables the tuning of the hole effective masses and band gaps. These results present an important advance towards the understanding of flexoelectric and electronic properties of hydrogen and fluorine functionalized graphene nanoribbons, which can have important implications for flexible electronic applications. Abstract: The demand for higher throughput in the processing of materials with ultra-short pulsed lasers has motivated studies on the use of double pulses (DP). It has been observed in such studies that at relatively high time delays between the two pulses, the ablated volume is lower than that for a single pulse (SP). This has been attributed to the shielding of the second pulse and the re-deposition of the material removed by the first pulse. The investigation of re-deposition in copper with the aid of atomistic simulations is the main objective of this study. Nevertheless, a computational investigation of SP-ablation and experimental measurement of the SP-ablation depths and threshold fluence are also covered. The applied computational apparatus comprises a combination of molecular dynamics with the two-temperature model and the Helmholtz wave equation. The analysis of the simulation results shows that the derived quantities like the SP-ablation threshold fluence and the ratio of DP ablation depth to SP-ablation depth are in agreement with the experimental values. An important finding of this study is that the characteristics of the re-deposition process are highly dependent on the fluence.

Abstract: This thesis presents, in its first part, an investigation on the trembling motion of wave packets known as zitterbewegung (ZBW), in multilayer graphene, as well as in moiré excitons in twisted MoS2/WSe2 hetero-bilayers. In the last few decades, the dynamics of wave packets has been subject of many theoretical and experimental studies in various types of systems such as semiconductors, superconductors, crystalline solids and cold atoms. The discovery of graphene and moiré excitons in twisted hetero-bilayers, brought two new platforms for the investigation on time evolution of wave packets and possible observation of ZBW. This trembling motion was first theoretically predicted by Schrödinger for wave packets describing particles that obey the Dirac equation. This is exactly the case of low energy electrons in graphene, as well as of moiré exciton in twisted MoS2/WSe2 under an external applied electromagnetic field. ZBW in multilayer graphene was studied both analytically and computationally, respectively, through the Green's function and split-operator methods. In this system, it is found that ZBW depends not only on the wave packet width and initial pseudospin polarization, but also on the number of layers. Furthermore, the analytical and numerical methods proposed here allow to investigate wave packet dynamics in graphene systems with an arbitrary number of layers and arbitrary potential landscapes. For moiré excitons in twisted MoS2/WSe2 hetero-bilayers, it is shown that, analogously to other Dirac-like particles, this system also exhibits ZBW when under a perpendicular applied field. In this case, the ZBW presents long timescales that are compatible with current experimental techniques for exciton dynamics. This promotes the study of the dynamics of moiré excitons in van der Waals heterostructures as an advantageous solidstate platform to probe zitterbewegung, broadly tunable by gating and inter-layer twist angle. In the second part of this thesis, a study into graphene plasmonic in van der Waals heterostructure (vdWhs) are treated in a linear response framework within the Random Phase Approximation and with support of the quantum electrostatic heterostructure (QEH), a DFT-based method. Since Dirac plasmons in graphene are very sensitive to the dielectric properties of the environment, it is possible to explore this property to probe the structure and composition of van der Waals heterostructures (vdWh) placed underneath a single graphene layer. In this way, one can achieve a layer sensitivity of a single layer and differentiate between different TMDs for heterostructures thicker than 2 layers. As a consequence of this, study, the hybridization of Dirac plasmons in graphene with phonons of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), when the materials are combined in so-called van der Waals heterostructures (vdWh) forming surface plasmon-phonon polaritons (SPPPs) are also investigated. It was found that it is possible to realize both strong and ultrastrong coupling regimes by tuning graphene’s Fermi energy and changing TMD layer number.

Abstract: The precise control of skyrmionics and magnonics in magnetic materials is key to the development of novel spin-based technology and information transport applications. Essentially, the inherent stability of magnetic skyrmions (provided by their topological charge) together with their extremely small size (down to a few nanometers) and the ultralow threshold current necessary to move them in nanostructures are the main advantages of skyrmionics. Not least, magnonics offers lower power consumption compared to electronics and the excitation of high frequency (sub-100~nm wavelength) magnons makes it possible for the creation of nanometric devices for ultrafast information transport. Even though extensive research has been carried out in recent years, the precise manipulation of skyrmions and spin waves (magnons) in nanostructures is not fully mastered and needs to be addressed before making functional skyrmionic and magnonic devices. In this thesis, we reveal multiple alternatives for the manipulation of skyrmions and spin-waves in different materials, such as bulk chiral magnets, heterochiral structures, magnet-supperconductor hybrids and two-dimentional magnetic materials. We make use of a multiscale model to numerically simulate the magnetic states at each considered material, from micromagnetic to atomistic control. We first explore the different nucleation mechanisms, activation energy, and the time evolution of the skyrmion formation in chiral magnetic films, crucial for the realization of skyrmion-based devices. We show that the skyrmion lattice is formed from the conical phase progressively, most probably by the formation of chiral bobbres, followed by the cylindrical growth of individual skyrmions from the film surface. That reflects a rod-like (one-dimensional) nucleation of the skyrmion phase, with an activation barrier of several electronvolts per skyrmion for the case of MnSi (Manganese monosilicide). In addition, we reveal the interesting blinking (creation-annihilation) behavior of skyrmions close to the phase boundary between the conical and skyrmion phases, where we recall that such switching between topologically distinct states has been proposed as a bit operation for information storage. Next, we discuss the motion of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic skyrmions in heterochiral magnets. We report the characteristic deflection of ferromagnetic skyrmions when moving across a heterochiral interface, where the extent of such deflection is tuned by the applied spin-polarized current and the magnitude of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Following, we show that the antiferromagnetic skyrmion achieves much higher velocities than its ferromagnetic counterpart, yet experiences far stronger confinement in nanoengineered heterochiral tracks, which reinforces antiferromagnetic skyrmions as a favorable choice for skyrmion-based devices. After that, we study the interesting coupling of magnetic skyrmions and superconducting vortices in magnet-superconductor heterostructures. We perform numerical simulations, based on experimental observations, to demonstrate that the stray field of magnetic skyrmions can nucleate antivortices in an adjacent superconducting film, giving rise to a hybrid topological object, the skyrmion-vortex pair, which harbor promising features for skyrmionics and quantum computing applications. We then explore the manipulation of a single skyrmion-vortex pair when currents are applied into both superconducting and magnetic parts of the heterostructure, which is of importance for the facilitated skyrmion guidance in racetrack applications. Afterwards, we make use of the high tunability of magnetic parameters in two-dimensional magnetic materials to reveal the rich phase diagram of exotic magnetic configurations in magnetic monolayers with suppressed nearest-neighbour exchange, where we show that several unique cycloidal, checkerboard, row-wise and spin-ice states are stabilized by the competition between the second-nearest-neighbor exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya, and dipolar interactions. Additionally, we show the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin-cycloids, as well as novel types of skyrmions and chiral domain walls. Finally, in the last part of the thesis, we present the spin wave properties in the two-dimensional magnetic materials CrBr$3$ and CrI$3$. Using spin-dynamics simulations parametrized from first principles, we reveal that the spin wave dispersion in such materials can be tuned in a broad range of frequencies by strain-engineering, and that a designed pattern of strain, as well as structural defects (halide vacancies) can be turned useful in the design of spin-wave guides. Lastly, we discuss the realization of magnonic crystals by moiré-periodic modulation of magnetic parameters in van der Waals heterostructures, where we show that the several nanometer small periodicities in such samples are ideal for the interference of terahertz spin waves. Recalling the wide range of possibilities for manipulating spin waves in such two-dimensional materials, we therefore suggest these systems as a front-runner for prospective terahertz magnonic applications.

Abstract: In this thesis, a first-principles research to tune the physical properties of group III-V materials in the thinnest limit is carried out. Among the different methods to tune the mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of these graphene related materials, we use: two-dimensional (2D) multilayers, straintronics, hydrogen functionalization, and transition metal adsorption. The first part of this research is devoted to a complete characterization of the structural, electronic, mechanical and vibrational properties of 2D group III-As monolayers, obtained from density functional theory. Our findings are used to understand the contribution of the

Abstract: The strain fields of periodically buckled graphene induce a periodic pseudomagnetic field (PMF) that modifies the electronic band structure. From the geometry, amplitude, and period of the periodic pseudomagnetic field, we determine the necessary conditions to access the regime of correlated phases by examining the band flattening. As compared to twisted bilayer graphene the proposed system has the advantages that (1) only a single layer of graphene is needed, (2) one is not limited to hexagonal superlattices, and (3) narrower flat bandwidth and larger separation between flat bands can be induced. We, therefore, propose that periodically strained graphene single layers can become a platform for the exploration of exotic many-body phases.
