Abstract |
We report on the preparation of CuBa(2)(Sr(x)Ca(1-x))(n)Cu(n-1)O(y) compounds by fabrication of (Ba,Sr,Ca)CuO(2) superlattices with pulsed laser deposition (PLD). A technique called interval deposition is used to suppress multi-level or island growth resulting in high-quality superlattice structures. Both, the applicability of PLD to atomic engineering as well as the fabrication of artificial superconductors is demonstrated. The (Sr,Ca)CuO(2)-BaCuO(2) superlattices are characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and selected area electron diffraction. The superlattice period has been deduced from electron diffraction patterns and XRD measurements. For Sr containing films, the best growth behavior is observed and films with the highest degree of crystallinity are obtained, whereas superconductivity is only found in less crystalline, Ca containing films. Under some deposition conditions and depending on the amount of Ba containing layers in the superlattice, it was observed that the BaCuO(2) material is converted to Ba(2)CuO(4-delta). Image simulations to interpret the HREM contrast are performed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
The microstructure of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox (Bi-2223) tapes has been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM. The emphasis has been placed on: (1) an examination of the grain morphology and size, (2) grain and colony boundary angles, which are formed during the tape processing, (3) a study of the grain boundaries on an atomic scale, including intergrowth investigations. Tapes with different process parameters have been compared with respect to the microstructure. A fully processed tape has on the average 50% thicker Bi-2223 grains than a tape after the first annealing. The angles of c-axis tilt grain boundaries are on average 14° and 26° for the fully processed tape and the tape after the first annealing, respectively. The intergrowth content (15%) and distribution are similar in these two tapes. |

Abstract |
The covalent triazine framework, CTF-1, served as host material for the in situ synthesis of Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The composite material consisted of 20 +/- 2 m% iron, mainly in gamma-Fe2O3 phase. The resulting gamma-Fe2O3@CTF-1 was examined for the adsorption of As-III, As-V and H-II from synthetic solutions and real surface-, ground- and wastewater. The material shows excellent removal efficiencies, independent from the presence of Ca2+, Mg2+ or natural organic matter and only limited dependency on the presence of phosphate ions. Its adsorption capacity towards arsenite (198.0 mg g(-1)), arsenate (102.3 mg g(-1)) and divalent mercury (165.8 mg g(-1)) belongs amongst the best-known adsorbents, including many other iron-based materials. Regeneration of the adsorbent can be achieved for use over multiple cycles without a decrease in performance by elution at 70 degrees C with 0.1 M NaOH, followed by a stirring step in a 5 m% H2O2 solution for As or 0.1 M thiourea and 0.001 M HCl for Hg. In highly contaminated water (100 mu gL(-1)), the adsorbent polishes the water quality to well below the current WHO limits. |

Abstract |
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries that rely on cationic redox reactions are the primary energy source for portable electronics. One pathway toward greater energy density is through the use of Li-rich layered oxides. The capacity of this class of materials (>270 milliampere hours per gram) has been shown to be nested in anionic redox reactions, which are thought to form peroxo-like species. However, the oxygen-oxygen (O-O) bonding pattern has not been observed in previous studies, nor has there been a satisfactory explanation for the irreversible changes that occur during first delithiation. By using Li2IrO3 as a model compound, we visualize the O-O dimers via transmission electron microscopy and neutron diffraction. Our findings establish the fundamental relation between the anionic redox process and the evolution of the O-O bonding in layered oxides. |

Abstract |
Ultralong Cu(OH)(2) and CuO nanowire bundles with lengths ranging from tens to hundreds of micrometers have been selectively synthesized on a large scale by a facile solution-phase method, using PEG200 as growth-directing agent. The growth mechanisms were investigated by monitoring the nanowire evolution process. The results showed that under the action of PEG200 molecules, the Cu(OH)(2) and CuO nanowires were first formed through oriented attachment of colloidal particles, then through side self-assembly leading to nanowire bundles, and finally to CuO nanoleaves. PEG200 plays a critical role in the synthesis of nanowires as it not only prevents the random aggregation of colloidal particles toward CuO nanoleaves but also helps to orientate nanowire growth by the coalescence and alignment in one direction of the colloidal particles. The concentration of OH(-) in the reaction system is also important for nanowire growth. In the absence of PEG200, nanoleaves are formed by an Ostwald ripening process. The band-gap value estimated from a UV-Vis absorption spectrum of CuO nanowire bundles is 2.32 eV. The photodegradation of a model pollutant, rhodamine B, by CuO nanowires and nanoleaves was compared with commercial nanopowders, showing that the as-synthesized ultralong CuO polycrystalline nanowire bundles have an enhanced photocatalytic activity with 87% decomposition of rhodamine B after an 8-h reaction, which was much higher than that of single-crystal nanoleaves (61%) and commercial nanopowders (32%). The origin of the high photocatalytic activity of these new polycrystalline CuO nanowire bundles has been discussed. This present work reveals that the (0 0 2) crystallographic surface is more favorable for photocatalytic decomposition of organic compounds and that these ultralong CuO nanowire bundles are potential candidates for photocatalysts in wastewater treatment. Abstract |
Oriented attachment of synthetic semiconductor nanocrystals is emerging as a route for obtaining new semiconductors that can have Dirac-type electronic bands like graphene, but also strong spin-orbit coupling. The two-dimensional assembly geometry will require both atomic coherence and long-range periodicity of the superlattices. We show how the interfacial self-assembly and oriented attachment of nanocrystals results in two-dimensional (2D) metal chalcogenide semiconductors with a honeycomb superlattice. We present an extensive atomic and nanoscale characterization of these systems using direct imaging and wave scattering methods. The honeycomb superlattices are atomically coherent, and have an octahedral symmetry that is buckled; the nanocrystals occupy two parallel planes. Considerable necking and large-scale atomic motion occurred during the attachment process. |

Abstract |
Mesoporous MIL-101(Cr) is used as host for a ship-in-a-bottle type adsorbent for selective U(VI) recovery from aqueous environments. The acid-resistant cage-type MOF is built in-situ around N,N-Diisobutyl-2-(octylphenylphosphoryl)acetamide (CMPO), a sterically demanding ligand with high U(VI) affinity. This one-step procedure yields an adsorbent which is an ideal compromise between homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, where the ligand can act freely within the pores of MIL-101, without leaching, while the adsorbent is easy separable and reusable. The adsorbent was characterized by XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, XRF, ADF-STEM and EDX, to confirm and quantify the successful encapsulation of the CMPO in MIL-101, and the preservation of the host. Adsorption experiments with a central focus on U(VI) recovery were performed. Very high selectivity for U(VI) was observed, while competitive metal adsorption (rare earths, transition metals...) was almost negligible. The adsorption capacity was calculated at 5.32 mg U/g (pH 3) and 27.99 mg U/g (pH 4), by fitting equilibrium data to the Langmuir model. Adsorption kinetics correlated to the pseudo-second-order model, where more than 95% of maximum uptake is achieved within 375 min. The adsorbed U(VI) is easily recovered by desorption in 0.1 M HNO3. Three adsorption/desorption cycles were performed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) (YBCO) grain boundaries characterized by a misalignment of the c-axes (45 degrees c-axis tilt or 45 degrees c-axis twist) have been obtained by employing a recently implemented biepitaxial technique. Junctions based on these grain boundaries exhibit good Josephson properties useful for applications. High values of the I(C)R(N) product and a Fraunhofer-like dependence of the critical current on the magnetic field, differently from traditional biepitaxial junctions, have been obtained. The correlation between transport properties and microstructure has been investigated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), which was also performed on previously measured junctions. The presence of atomically clean basal plane (BP) faced tilt boundaries, among other types of interfaces, has been shown. The possibility of selecting these kinds of boundaries by controlling film growth, and their possible advantages in terms of reproducibility and uniformity of the junction properties an discussed. The possibility of employing these junctions to explore the symmetry of the order parameter is also discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
In-situ fabrication of palladium(0) nanoparticles inside zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) has been established via one-step facile spray-dry technique. Crystal structures and morphologies of the Pd@ZIF-8 samples are investigated by powder XRD, TEM, SAED, STEM, and EDX techniques. High angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAAD-STEM) and 3D tomographic analysis confirm the presence of palladium nanoparticles inside the ZIF-8 structure. The porosity, surface area and N-2 physisorption properties are evaluated for Pd@ZIF-8 with various palladium contents. Furthermore, Pd@ZIF-8 samples are effectively applied as heterogeneous catalysts in alkenes hydrogenation. This straightforward method is able to speed up the synthesis of encapsulation of metal nanoparticles in metal organic frameworks. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Multi-wall carbon nanotubes have been produced by the catalytic decomposition of acetylene. Go-Mo, Co-V and Co-Fe mixtures supported either on zeolite or corundum alumina were used as catalysts. When Fe or V is added to Co, the carbon deposit increases. The nanotubes were characterized by both low and high resolution TEM. From histograms representing the outer diameter distributions, it is clear that the outer diameter of the nanotubes can be controlled by choosing the appropriate catalyst. Abstract |
The large-scale production of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is reported. Large quantities of SWNTs can be synthesised by catalytic decomposition of methane over well-dispersed metal particles supported on MgO at 1000 degrees C. The thus produced SWNTs can be separated easily from the support by a simple acidic treatment to obtain a product with high yields (70-80%) of SWNTs. Because the typical synthesis time is 10 min, 1 g of SWNTs can be synthesised per day by this method. The SWNTs are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and by Raman spectroscopy, showing the quality and the quantity of products. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract |
We present the post-modification of a gallium based Metal Organic Framework, COMOC-4, with a Mo-complex. The resulting Mo@COMOC-4 was characterized by means of N2 sorption, XRPD, DRIFT, TGA, XRF, XPS and TEM analysis. The results demonstrate that even at high Mo-complex loadings on the framework, no aggregation or any Mo or Mo oxide species are formed. Moreover, the Mo@COMOC-4 was evaluated as a catalyst in the epoxidation of cyclohexene, cyclooctene and cyclododecene employing TBHP in decane as oxidant. The post-modified COMOC-4 exhibits a very high selectivity toward the epoxide (up to 100%). Regenerability and stability tests have been carried out demonstrating that the catalyst can be recycled without leaching of Mo or loss of crystallinity. |

Abstract |
MFI zeolite nanosheets with thickness of 2 and 8 nm were synthesized, transformed into bifunctional catalysts by loading with platinum and tested in n-decane isomerization and hydrocracking. Detailed analysis of skeletal isomers and hydrocracked products revealed that the MFI nanosheets display transition-state shape-selectivity similar to bulk MFI zeolite crystals. The suppressed formation of bulky skeletal isomers and C5 cracking products are observed both in the nanosheets and the bulk crystals grown in three dimensions. This is typical for restricted transition-state shape-selectivity, characteristic for the MFI type pores. It is a first clear example of transition-state shape-selectivity inside a zeolitic nanosheet. Owing to the short diffusion path across the sheets, expression of diffusion-based discrimination of reaction products in the MFI nanosheets was limited. The 2-methylnonane formation among monobranched C10 isomers and 2,7-dimethyloctane among dibranched C10 isomers, which in MFI zeolite are favored by product diffusion, was much less favored on the nanosheets compared to the reference bulk ZSM-5 material. |

Abstract |
Au particles were prepared by evaporation in ultra high vacuum at high temperature, on the surfaces of TiO2 micro-spheres with the anatase structure. The morphology and the structural deformation in Au deposits were studied by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and image simulations by the multislice technique. The particles were polyhedral, limited by (100) and (111) faces. Patches with a hexagonal lattice were found around the particles, which was interpreted as thin Au islands on the surface. In these islands the Au lattice was deformed and perfectly accommodated to the (110) surface of TiO2. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
The variation of structures and superconducting properties by changing extra oxygen or fluorine atoms concentration in Hg-based Cu mixed oxides and YBa2Cu3O6+delta was studied. The data obtained by NPD study of Hg-1201 can be considered as an evidence of the conventional oxygen doping mechanism with 2 delta holes per (CuO2) layer. The extra oxygen atom was found to be located in the middle of the Hg mesh only. Different formal charges of oxygen and fluorine inserted into reduced 123 structure results in its distinct variations. The fluorine incorporation into strongly reduced YBa2Cu3O6+delta causes a significant structural rearrangement and the formation of a new compound with a composition close to YBa2Cu3O6F2 (tetragonal alpha = 3.87 Angstrom and c approximate to 13 Angstrom), which structure was deduced from the combined results of X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. Fluorination treatment by XeF2 of nonsuperconducting 123 samples causes an appearance of bulk superconductivity with T-c up to 94K. |

Abstract |
Experimental results show that the room-temperature carrier mobility in bulk layers of undoped or Si-doped GaN grown by LP-MOVPE on sapphire substrate shows a sudden increase as soon as the carrier density exceeds a critical value of about 10(18) cm(-3). We show that such a behavior can be theoretically reproduced by assuming that the columnar structure i.e. the dislocation microstructure is responsible for internal electronic barriers.
