Abstract: The moire pattern observed in stacked noncommensurate crystal lattices, such as heterobilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, produces a periodic modulation of their band gap. Excitons subjected to this potential landscape exhibit a band structure that gives rise to a quasiparticle dubbed the moire exciton. In the case of MoS2/WSe2 heterobilayers, the moire trapping potential has honeycomb symmetry and, consequently, the moire exciton band structure is the same as that of a Dirac-Weyl fermion, whose mass can be further tuned down to zero with a perpendicularly applied field. Here we show that, analogously to other Dirac-like particles, the moire exciton exhibits a trembling motion, also known as Zitterbewegung, whose long timescales are compatible with current experimental techniques for exciton dynamics. This promotes the study of the dynamics of moire excitons in van der Waals heterostructures as an advantageous solid-state platform to probe Zitterbewegung, broadly tunable by gating and interlayer twist angle.

Abstract: Topological properties of a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) proximity-coupled by an s-wave superconductor are investigated, in which the energy spectra and the differential conductance are calculated within the framework of tight-binding approximation. Our results indicate that this dsDNA-superconductor system hosts Majorana zero modes (MZMs) when the Zeeman field is perpendicular to the helix axis, whereas no MZM could be observed when the Zeeman field is parallel to the helix axis, in sharp contrast to previous studies on nanowires including single-stranded DNA. In particular, two topological phase transitions could take place in the dsDNA-superconductor system by changing the Zeeman field, one from a topological trivial phase to a topological nontrivial phase with one pair of MZMs in small Zeeman field regime, and the other from a phase with one pair of MZMs to a phase with two pairs of MZMs by further increasing the Zeeman field. In the presence of a gate field normal to the helix axis, the topological nontrivial phase with two pairs of MZMs can transform into the phase with one pair of MZMs. The topological phase with one pair of MZMs is more stable and robust against Anderson disorder.

Abstract: Recent advances in manufacturing arrays of artificial pinning sites, i.e., antidots, blind holes and magnetic dots, allowed an effective control of magnetic flux in superconductors. An array of magnetic bars deposited on top of a superconducting film was shown to display different pinning regimes depending on the direction of the in-plane magnetization of the bars. Changing the sign of their magnetization results in changes in the induced magnetic pinning potentials. By numerically solving the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations in a superconducting film with periodic arrays of zigzag-arranged magnetic bars, we revealed various flux dynamics regimes. In particular, we demonstrate flux pinning and flux flow, depending on the direction of the magnetization of the magnetic bars. Remarkably, the revealed different flux-motion regimes are associated with different mechanisms of vortex-antivortex dynamics. For example, we found that for an 'antiparallel' configuration of magnetic bars this dynamics involves a repeating vortex-antivortex generation and annihilation. We show that the depinning transition and the onset of flux flow can be manipulated by the magnetization of the bars and the geometry of the array. This provides an effective control of the depinning critical current that can be useful for possible fluxonics applications.

Abstract: We investigate the energy levels and optical properties of a circular graphene quantum dot in the presence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to the dot. Based on the Dirac-Weyl equation and assuming zero outward current at the edge of the dot we present the results for two different types of boundary conditions, i.e. infinite-mass (IMBC) and zigzag boundary conditions. We found that the dot with zigzag edges displays a zero-energy state in the energy spectra while this is not the case for the IMBCs. For both boundary conditions, the confinement becomes dominated by the magnetic field, where the energy levels converge to the Landau levels as the magnetic field increases. The effect of boundary conditions on the electron-and hole-energy states is found to affect the interband absorption spectra, where we found larger absorption in the case of IMBCs. The selection rules for interband optical transitions are determined and discussed for both boundary conditions.

Abstract: We propose a microscopic model for double exchange in GaAs:Mn, GaP:Mn which is based on the interaction between the transition metal impurities and the heavy holes of host semiconductor. Abstract: In honeycomb Dirac systems with broken inversion symmetry, orbital magnetic moments coupled to the valley degree of freedom arise due to the topology of the band structure, leading to valley-selective optical dichroism. On the other hand, in Dirac systems with prominent spin-orbit coupling, similar orbital magnetic moments emerge as well. These moments are coupled to spin, but otherwise have the same functional form as the moments stemming from spatial inversion breaking. After reviewing the basic properties of these moments, which are relevant for a whole set of newly discovered materials, such as silicene and germanene, we study the particular impact that these moments have on graphene nanoengineered barriers with artificially enhanced spin-orbit coupling. We examine transmission properties of such barriers in the presence of a magnetic field. The orbital moments are found to manifest in transport characteristics through spin-dependent transmission and conductance, making them directly accessible in experiments. Moreover, the Zeeman-type effects appear without explicitly incorporating the Zeeman term in the models, i.e., by using minimal coupling and Peierls substitution in continuum and the tight-binding methods, respectively. We find that a quasiclassical view is able to explain all the observed phenomena.

Abstract: Diffusive properties of interacting magnetic dipoles confined in a parabolic narrow channel and in the presence of a periodic modulated (corrugated) potential along the unconfined direction are studied using Brownian dynamics simulations. We compare our simulation results with the analytical result for the effective diffusion coefficient of a single particle by Festa and d'Agliano [Physica A 90, 229 (1978)] and show the importance of interparticle interaction on the diffusion process. We present results for the diffusion of magnetic dipoles as a function of linear density, strength of the periodic modulation and commensurability factor.
