Abstract |
The potential-controlled electrochemical aldol condensation of acetone to diacetone alcohol in a standard batch electrolysis set-up was studied in this work. It is confirmed that the reaction proceeds at the cathode and that, contrary to what is mentioned in earlier literature, water in the electrolyte has a disadvantageous effect on the reaction. Similar to the chemical reaction, the electrochemical reaction reaches a maximum yield when the equilibrium is reached. Separating the anode and cathode prevents cross-over and degradation of products, leading to a higher yield. Starting with pure acetone and support electrolyte, it was possible to obtain a diacetone alcohol concentration of 15 m% after two hours electrolysis in a divided set-up with a platinum electrode at -2.5 V. The concentration gradient throughout the electrolysis follows an exponential curve up to its equilibrium concentration. |

Abstract |
Weak interlayer van der Waals (vdW) bonding has significant impact on the surface/interface structure, electronic properties, and transport properties of vdW layered materials. Unraveling the complex atomistic dynamics and structural evolution at vdW surfaces is therefore critical for the design and synthesis of the next-generation vdW layered materials. Here, we show that Ge/Bi cation diffusion along the vdW gap in layered GeBi2Te4 (GBT) can be directly observed using in situ heating scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The cation concentration variation during diffusion was correlated with the local Te-6 octahedron distortion based on a quantitative analysis of the atomic column intensity and position in time-elapsed STEM images. The in-plane cation diffusion leads to out-of-plane surface etching through complex structural evolutions involving the formation and propagation of a non-centrosymmetric GeTe2 triple layer surface reconstruction on fresh vdW surfaces, and GBT subsurface reconstruction from a septuple layer to a quintuple layer. Our results provide atomistic insight into the cation diffusion and surface reconstruction in vdW layered materials. Weak interlayer van der Waals (vdW) bonding has significant impact on the structure and properties of vdW layered materials. Here authors use in-situ aberration-corrected ADF-STEM for an atomistic insight into the cation diffusion in the vdW gaps and the etching of vdW surfaces at high temperatures. |

Abstract |
A general Monte Carlo program for the simulation of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers is presented. The global layout of the program is discussed and the way in which variance reduction techniques have been employed to improve the efficiency of the code is described. For the case of polychromatic excitation in a direct excitation energy-dispersive (ED) XRF instrument, experimentally collected ED-XRF spectra are compared with simulated spectral distributions. Applications of the software in the field of quantitative analysis and thickness estimation of samples of intermediate thickness illustrate the potential of the method. |

Abstract |
New strontium titanyl phosphate Sr2TiO(PO4)2 (1) was synthesized and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, and band structure calculations. Titanyl phosphate 1 is isostructural with vanadyl phosphate Sr2VO(PO4)2 and has a layered structure. The titanium atoms are shifted from the centers of the TiO6 octahedra and form short (1.74 Å) titanyl bonds. The structure of 1 is an unusual example of the disordered orientation of the chains formed by TiO6 octahedra in complex titanium phosphates. |

Abstract |
The flexoelectric and electronic properties of zig-zag graphene nanoribbons are explored under mechanical bending using state of the art first principles calculations. A linear dependence of the bending induced out of plane polarization on the applied strain gradient is found. The inferior flexoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons can be improved by more than two orders of magnitude by hydrogen and fluorine functionalization (CH and CF nanoribbons). A large out of plane flexoelectric effect is predicted for CF nanoribbons. The origin of this enhancement lies in the electro-negativity difference between carbon and fluorine atoms, which breaks the out of plane charge symmetry even for a small strain gradient. The flexoelectric effect can be further improved by co-functionalization with hydrogen and fluorine (CHF Janus-type nanoribbon), where a spontaneous out of plane dipole moment is formed even for flat nanoribbons. We also find that bending can control the charge localization of valence band maxima and therefore enables the tuning of the hole effective masses and band gaps. These results present an important advance towards the understanding of flexoelectric and electronic properties of hydrogen and fluorine functionalized graphene nanoribbons, which can have important implications for flexible electronic applications. Abstract |
Welding nanocrystals for assembly: The welding of Au domains grown on the tips of shape-controlled cadmium chalcogenide colloidal nanocrystals is used as a strategy for their assembly. Iodine-induced coagulation of selectively grown Au domains leads to assemblies such as flowerlike structures based on bullet-shaped nanocrystals, linear and cross-linked chains of nanorods, and globular networks with tetrapods as building blocks. |

Abstract |
We study the ground and first excited states of the neutral and charged shallow donor system confined in a GaAs quantum well (QW) along one direction and by a parabolic potential in the plane perpendicular to the QW. The influence of an external perpendicular magnetic field and of the position of the donor on the energy of the states is studied. We investigate the dependence of the ground and excited states of the negatively charged donor on the confinement potential and external magnetic field. When the donor is displaced from the center of the QW the presence of the lateral confinement shifts the magnetic field induced angular momentum transitions and shifts the unbinding to higher magnetic field. Abstract |
Pesticides are emerging contaminants frequently detected in the aquatic environment. In this work, a novel approach combining activated carbon adsorption, oxygen plasma treatment and ozonation was studied for the removal of the persistent chlorinated pesticide alachlor. A comparison was made between the removal efficiency and energy consumption for two different reactor operation modes: batchrecirculation and single-pass mode. The kinetics study revealed that the insufficient removal of alachlor by adsorption was significantly improved in terms of degradation efficiency and energy consumption when combined with the plasma treatment. The best efficiency (ca. 80% removal with an energy cost of 19.4 kWh mÀ3) was found for the single-pass operational mode of the reactor. In the batch-recirculating process, a complete elimination of alachlor by plasma treatment was observed after 30 min of treatment. Analysis of the reactive species induced by plasma in aqueous solutions showed that the decomposition of alachlor mainly occurred through a radical oxidation mechanism, with a minor contribution of long-living oxidants (O3, H2O2). Investigation of the alachlor oxidation pathways revealed six different oxidation mechanisms, including the loss of aromaticity which was never before reported for plasma-assisted degradation of aromatic pesticides. It was revealed that the removal rate and energy cost could be further improved with more than 50% by additional O3 gas bubbling in the solution reservoir. |

Abstract |
Depth sectioning in high angular annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy is considered a candidate for three-dimensional characterization on the atomic scale. However at present the depth resolution is still far from the atomic level, due to strong limitations in the opening angle of the beam. In this paper we introduce a new, parameter based tomographic reconstruction algorithm that allows to make maximal use of the prior knowledge about the constituent atom types and the microscope settings, so as to retrieve the atomic positions and push the resolution to the atomic level in all three dimensions. |

Abstract |
The energy spectrum and density of states of graphene bilayer superlattices (SLs) are evaluated. We take into account doping and/or gating of the layers as well as tunnel coupling between them. In addition, we evaluate the transmission through such SLs and through single or double barriers. The transmission exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the incident wave vector. |

Abstract |
Graphene’s remarkable electronic properties have fuelled the vision of a graphene-based platform for lighter, faster and smarter electronics and computing applications. One of the challenges is to devise ways to tailor graphene’s electronic properties and to control its charge carriers. Here we show that a single-atom vacancy in graphene can stably host a local charge and that this charge can be gradually built up by applying voltage pulses with the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope. The response of the conduction electrons in graphene to the local charge is monitored with scanning tunnelling and Landau level spectroscopy, and compared to numerical simulations. As the charge is increased, its interaction with the conduction electrons undergoes a transition into a supercritical regime where itinerant electrons are trapped in a sequence of quasi-bound states which resemble an artificial atom. The quasi-bound electron states are detected by a strong enhancement of the density of states within a disc centred on the vacancy site which is surrounded by halo of hole states. We further show that the quasi-bound states at the vacancy site are gate tunable and that the trapping mechanism can be turned on and off, providing a mechanism to control and guide electrons in graphene. |

Abstract |
We optimized the deposition of YBa2(Cu1-xZnx)(3)O-7-delta thin-films using inverted cylindrical magnetron sputtering and report here a detailed structural study, especially in relation to crystal growth, associated surface morphology, Y2O3 precipitation and other secondary phases important for flux pinning. We find that the epitaxial quality of the Zn-substituted YBa2Cu3O7-delta films is decreased compared with high-quality pure YBa2Cu3O7-delta films prepared under identical conditions. The pure films have smoother surfaces, while those of Zn-substituted films contain pinholes and outgrowths. Secondary phases and a-axis grains were observed in the Zn-substituted films. Y2O3 precipitates with typical dimensions of 50-100 Angstrom have been found in both pure and Zn-substituted samples. However, their density of about 10(23) m(-3), observed in the pure films, is significantly reduced in the Zn-substituted films when increasing the Zn concentration up to 4%. |

Abstract |
Single crystals of Bi3Mn1.9Te1.1O11 were prepared from NaCl+KCl flux. This compound adopts KSbO3-type crystal structure as evidenced by electron and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The three-dimensional channel structure is formed by corner-sharing octahedral (Mn0.63Te0.37)2O10 dimers and two identical (Bi1)4(Bi2)2 interpenetrating lattices. The intra-dimer Mn/TeMn/Te distances in Bi3Mn1.9Te1.1O11 are short and are consistent with weak metalmetal interactions. The mixed oxidation state of manganese and the edge-sharing octahedral features are confirmed by X-ray near edge absorption spectroscopy measurements, which indicate Bi3(MnIII1.1MnIV0.8)TeVI1.1O11 with 57.7% Mn3+ and 42.3% Mn4+. The partial substitution of Te for Mn perturbs long-range magnetic interactions, thereby destroying the ferromagnetic ordering found in Bi3Mn3O11 (TC=150 K). |

Abstract |
We investigate the energy levels of the negatively and positively charged excitons (also called trions) in a 200 Angstrom wide GaAs quantum well in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. A comparison is made with the experimental results of Glasberg et al. (Phys. Rev. B. 59 (1999) R10 425) and of Yusa et al. (cond-mat/0103505). (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
tSilver nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on nickel, titanium and gold substrates using a potentiostaticdouble-pulse method. The influence of the support material on both the morphology and the electro-catalytic activity of Ag NPs for the reduction reaction of benzyl bromide was investigated and comparedwith previous research regarding silver NPs on glassy carbon. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) dataindicated that spherical monodispersed NPs were obtained on Ni, Au and GC substrate with an averageparticle size of respectively 216 nm, 413 nm and 116 nm. On a Ti substrate dendritic NPs were obtainedwith a larger average particle density of 480 nm. The influence of the support material on the electrocat-alytic activity was tested by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) for the reduction reaction of benzylbromide(1 mM) in acetonitrile + 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (Bu4NClO4). When the nucleation poten-tial (En) was applied at high cathodic overpotential, a positive shift of the reduction potential was obtained. The nucleation (tn) and growth time (tg) mostly had an influence on the current density whereas longerdeposition times lead to larger current densities. For these three parameters an optimum was present. The best electrocatalytic activity was obtained with Ag NPs deposited on Ni were a shift of the reduc-tion peak potential of 145 mV for the reaction of benzyl bromide was measured in comparance to bulksilver. The deposition on Au substrate yielded a positive shift of 114 mV. There was no indication of analtered reaction mechanism as the reaction was characterized as diffusion controlled and the transfercoefficients were in accordance with bulk silver. There was a beneficial catalitic activity measured due tothe interplay between support and NPs. This resulted in a shift of the reduction peak potential of 34 mV(Ag NPs on Au) and 65 mV (Ag NPs on Ni) compared to Ag NPs on a GC substrate. |

Abstract |
A new hydrometallurgical method was investigated for selective leaching of chromium from stainless steel slag (SS slag) consisting of temperature controlled extraction with NaOH in the presence of NaOCl, followed by water leaching. After parameter optimization of the NaOCl-NaOH extraction step, a selective Cr leaching of 68% was reached, while dissolution of matrix materials was low (Al 0.3%, Ca 2.0%, Si 0.4%). The optimum conditions for the investigated system are: 105 degrees C, 6 h, SS slag particle size <63 mu m, mass ratio of NaOH to SS slag 0.13, and 3.3 mmol NaOCl to 1 g SS slag. The described oxidative alkaline leaching process by hypochlorite enables selective recovery of Cr at a significantly lower temperature and required amount of alkaline agent than molten salt or alkaline roasting processes. BaCrO4 was precipitated to purify and concentrate Cr from the leachate in which also minor amounts of Mn and V were present. This method allowed for a 99.9% Cr recovery rate. The obtained leaching residue shows no alterations of the SS slag's mineralogy with respect to untreated material. Therefore, a known carbonation treatment of the slag can be applied to prepare novel construction materials with a lowered Cr content. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |
