“A new multisine-based impedimetric aptasensing platform”. Pauwels D, Pilehvar S, Geboes B, Hubin A, De Wael K, Breugelmans T, Electrochemistry communications 71, 23 (2016). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.ELECOM.2016.07.010
Abstract: In this work an aptamer-based biosensor is combined with a multisine electrochemical impedance spectroscopy sensing methodology into a novel and promising biosensing strategy. Employing a multisine instead of a traditional single sine measuring method allows the detection and quantification of parameters that provide information about the accuracy and reliability of the results, such as noise and distortions. This does not only lead to a shorter measurement time, but it also enables an easy and fast evaluation of the quality of the data and fitting, leading to more accurate results.

“An aggregate resource efficiency perspective on sustainability : a sustainable value application to the EU-15 countries”. Ang F, Van Passel S, Mathijs E, Ecological Economics 71, 99 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.ECOLECON.2011.08.008
Abstract: The Sustainable Value approach integrates the efficiency with regard to environmental, social and economic resources into a monetary indicator. It gained significant popularity as evidenced by diverse applications at the corporate level. However, its introduction as a measure adhering to the strong sustainability paradigm sparked an ardent debate. This study explores its validity as a macroeconomic strong sustainability measure by applying the Sustainable Value approach to the EU-15 countries. Concretely, we assessed environmental, social and economic resources in combination with the GDP for all EU-15 countries from 1995 to 2006 for three benchmark alternatives. The results show that several countries manage to adequately delink resource use from GDP growth. Furthermore, the remarkable difference in outcome between the national and EU-15 benchmark indicates a possible inefficiency of the current allocation of national resource ceilings imposed by the European institutions. Additionally, by using an effects model we argue that the service degree of the economy and governmental expenditures on social protection and research and development are important determinants of overall resource efficiency. Finally, we sketch out three necessary conditions to link the Sustainable Value approach to the strong sustainability paradigm. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“Accurate infrared spectroscopy determination of interstitial and precipitated oxygen in highly doped Czochralski-grown silicon”. de Gryse O, Clauws P, Rossou L, van Landuyt J, Vanhellemont J, The review of scientific instruments 70, 3661 (1999). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.1149974
Abstract: A method has been developed to determine the interstitial and precipitated oxygen concentration in highly doped n- and p-type silicon. 10-30-mu m-thin silicon samples in a mechanical stress-free state and without alteration of the thermal history are prepared and measured with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy at 5.5-6 K. The measured oxygen contents in the as-grown Si samples agree well with those obtained with gas fusion analysis. In the highly boron-doped samples, the interstitial oxygen can be determined down to 10(17) cm(-3). (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0034-6748(99)04909-6].

“An accurate parameterization for scattering factors, electron densities and electrostatic potentials for neutral atoms that obey all physical constraints”. Abstract: An efficient procedure and computer program are outlined for fitting numerical X-ray and electron scattering factors with the correct inclusion of all physical constraints. The numerical electron scattering factors have been parameterized using five analytic non-relativistic hydrogen electron scattering factors as basis functions for 103 neutral atoms of the periodic table. The inclusion of the correct physical constraints in the electron scattering factor and its derived quantities allows the use of the new parameterization in different fields. In terms of quality of the fit, the proposed parameterization of the electron scattering factor is one order of magnitude better than the previous analytic fittings.

Abstract: ITEM specimens of a LaAlO3/SrTiO3 multilayer are prepared by FIB with internal lift out. Using a Ga+1 beam of 5 kV, a final cleaning step yielding top, top-angle, side, and bottom-angle cleaning is performed. Different cleaning procedures, which can be easily implemented in a dual beam FIB system, are described and compared; all cleaning types produce thin lamellae, useful for HRTEM and HAADF-STEM work up to atomic resolution. However, the top cleaned lamellae are strongly affected by the curtain effect. Top-angle cleaned specimens show an amorphous layer of around 5 nm at the specimen surfaces, due to damage and redeposition. Furthermore, it is observed that the LaAlO3 layers are preferentially destroyed and transformed into amorphous material, during the thinning process.

Abstract: A uniform ground-state three-dimensional Fermi gas with short-range repulsive pairwise interaction is under consideration. Its kinetic and interaction energies are calculated up to the second order of the expansion in the gas parameter. Similar to recent results for an interacting Bose gas, the quantities in question are found to depend on the pairwise interaction through two characteristic lengths: the former, a, is the s-wave scattering length, and the latter, b, is related to a by b=a-m(partial derivativea/partial derivativem), where m stands for the fermion mass. To control the results, we proceed in two independent ways. The first involves the Hellmann-Feynman theorem applied to derive the kinetic and interaction energies from the total-energy expansion in the gas parameter first found by Huang and Yang. The second way operates with in-medium pair wave functions and allows one to calculate the quantities of interest “from scratch.” The results of the present investigation, taken together with those of the recent consideration of a dilute Bose gas, make it possible to conclude that the pairwise interaction in a quantum gas has an essential and nontrivial effect on the kinetic energy, which is not the case for a classical many-particle system.
