Title Orientational charge density waves and the metal-insulator transition in polymerized KC60 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication AIP conference proceedings Abbreviated Journal
Volume (down) 723 Issue Pages 339-342
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Polymerized KC60 undergoes a structural phase transition accompanied by a metal-insulator transition around 50 K. To explain the structural aspect, a mechanism involving small orientational deviations of the valence electron density on every C-60 monomer orientational charge density waves (OCDWs) – has already been proposed earlier. In the present work, we address the metal-insulator transition using the OCDW concept. We are inspired by the analogy between a polymer chain exhibiting an OCDW and a linear atomic chain undergoing a static lattice deformation doubling the unit cell: such a deformation implies a band gap at the zone boundary, yielding an insulating state (Peierls instability). Within our view, a similar mechanism occurs in polymerized KC60; the OCDW plays the role of the lattice deformation. We present tight-binding band structure calculations and conclude that the metal-insulator transition can indeed be explained using OCDWs, but that the threedimensionality of the crystal plays an unexpected key role.

Title Dynamics of the superconducting condensate in the presence of a magnetic field : channelling of vortices in superconducting strips at high currents Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication Physica: C : superconductivity Abbreviated Journal Physica C
Volume (down) 404 Issue 1-4 Pages 400-404
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract On the basis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation we studied the dynamics of the superconducting condensate in a wide two-dimensional sample in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and applied current. We could identify two critical currents: the current at which the pure superconducting state becomes unstable (J(c2)(1)) and the current at which the system transits from the resistive state to the superconducting state (J(c1) < J(c2)). The current J(c2) decreases monotonically with external magnetic field, while J(c1) exhibits a maximum at H*. For sufficient large magnetic fields the hysteresis disappears and J(c1) = J(c2) = Jc. In this high magnetic field region and for currents close to Jc the voltage appears as a result of the motion of separate vortices. With increasing current the moving vortices form, channels' with suppressed order parameter along which the vortices can move very fast. This leads to a sharp increase of the voltage. These 'channels' resemble in some respect the phase slip lines which occur at zero magnetic field. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Volume (down) 401 Issue 1-4 Pages 270-272

Abstract We report the complete disappearance of the structural modulation in heavily lead-doped Bi2-xPbxSr2CaCu2O8+delta crystals observed by transmission electron microscopy. Crystals with a nominal lead content of x = 0.8, corresponding to an effective lead content of x = 0.39, yield the non-modulated phase. The superconducting properties of this modulation-free phase (beta phase) have been studied and compared to those of undoped crystals displaying the modulated phase (alpha phase). Magnetisation measurements reveal that the irreversibility field H-irr(T) and relaxation rates are strongly improved within the beta phase. Measurements of the lower critical field, H-cl, show that the anisotropy factor, E, is considerably reduced in the modulation-free crystals. This is the signature of stronger coupling between CuO2 layers which in turn deeply influences the effectiveness of the pinning. These measurements explain the enhanced pinning properties in moderately Pb-doped crystals in which the a phase and P phase coexist. The enhanced pinning is not only due to the alpha/beta interfaces, which act as effective pinning centers: the emergence of modulation-free domains, characterized by a strongly reduced anisotropy, also significantly contribute to this effect. Title Stable and metastable states in a mesoscopic superconducting “eight” loop in presence of an external magnetic field Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication Physica: C : superconductivity Abbreviated Journal Physica C
Volume (down) 400 Issue 3-4 Pages 165-170
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract The stable and metastable states of different configurations of a mesoscopic loop in the form of an eight is studied in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that for certain configurations the current is equal to zero for any value of the magnetic field leading to a magnetic field independent superconducting state. The state with fixed phase circulation becomes unstable when the momentum of the superconducting electrons reaches a critical value. At this moment the kinetic energy of the superconducting condensate becomes of the same order as the potential energy of the Cooper pairs and it leads to an instability. Numerical analysis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations shows that the absolute value of the order parameter changes gradually at the transition from a state with one phase circulation to another although the vorticity change occurs abruptly. Title Controlling the diameters in large-scale synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes by catalytic decomposition of CH4 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication Chemical physics letters Abbreviated Journal Chem Phys Lett
Volume (down) 398 Issue 1-3 Pages 276-282
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract High-quality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are synthesized in gram amount on Fe-Mo/MgO catalysts by catalytic decomposition of CH4 in H-2 or N-2. Raman data reveal that the as-prepared SATNTs have a diameter of about 0.74-1.29 nm. It is found that the diameter of the as-prepared SWNTs can be controlled mainly by adjusting the molar ratio of Fe-Mo versus the MgO support. Several other factors that potentially influence the growth of SWNTs have been studied in detail. The experimental results show that the nature of the catalyst determines the diameter of the as-prepared SWNTs. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract A microscopic Hamiltonian for interacting manganese impurities in dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is derived. It is shown that in p-type III-V DMS, the indirect exchange between Mn impurities has similarities with the Zener mechanism in transition metal oxides. Here the mobile and localized holes near the top of the valence band play the role of unoccupied p-orbitals which induce ferromagnetism. T-C estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with experiments on (Ga,Mn)As. The model is also applicable to the p-doped (Ga,Mn)P system. The magnetic ordering in n-type (Ga,Mn)N is due to exchange between the electrons localized on the levels lying deep in the forbidden energy gap. This mechanism is even closer to the original Zener mechanism. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract This study is dedicated to a better understanding of the processes occurring under ion bombardment of ultra-thin ZrO2/SiO2/Si gate dielectric stacks. Complex-shaped depth profiles were obtained by using TOF-SIMS with dual beam (500 eV for sputtering and 10 keV for analysis) Ar+ ions. The SIMS intensities of all the elements depend critically on the amount of oxygen at any moment of the sputtering process. Increased intensity is observed at the surface and at the ZrO2/SiO2 interface. A long tail of the Zr signal is present in the Si substrate, even after the second (SiO2/Si) interface, and a double bump structure in the Zr-90 and ZrO dimer is observed, which is more pronounced with increasing thickness of the interfacial SiO2 layer. Computer simulations using the dynamic Monte Carlo code (TRIDYN) are performed in order to distinguish the ion bombardment-induced effects from changes in the ionization degree. The original code is extended with simple models for the ionization mechanism and for the molecular yield during sputtering. Oxygen preferential sputtering at the surface and ballistic transport of Zr towards and through the interface are clearly demonstrated, but there is also evidence that due to recoil implantation oxygen gets piled-up near the ZrO2/SiO2 interface. Abstract Focused narrow-band beam of the synchrotron radiation was used for in-depth analysis of historic and modern paint layers. The fluorescent radiation induced by 21 keV impact radiation was detected by a Si(Li) detector equipped with a polycapillary X-ray lens in con-focal geometry. Scanning of the sample was performed by a motorized xyz stage. Space resolution of 30 ìm was achieved. The procedure of evaluation of concentrations was based on the independent parameter method and included absorption of radiation in the outer layers and secondary fluorescence enhancement induced by hard X-rays of the same and neighboring layers.

Title Determination of localized Fe2+/Fe3+ ratios in inks of historic documents by means of \mu-XANES Type A1 Journal article

Abstract An important part of the European cultural heritage is composed of hand-written documents. Many of these documents were drawn up with iron-gall ink. This type of ink present a serious conservation problem, as it slowly oxidizes ('burns') the paper it is written on, thereby gradually disintegrating the historic document. Acid hydrolysis of the cellulose and/or the oxidation of organic compounds promoted by radical intermediates that are formed due to the presence of Fe2+ ions are considered to be the cause of the disintegration. mu-XANES measurements were performed with a lateral resolution of 30-50 mum in order to determine the local Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio in 19th C. documents from the Austrian National Archives and fragments of 16th C documents from the Polish National Library. In the 19th C documents, no significant amount of Fe2+ was detected. On the other hand, in the 16th C fragments, significant amounts of Fe2+ and appreciable differences in distribution of Fe2+ and Fe3+ within individual letters/ink stains were observed.
