“Ground state and normal-mode spectra of a two-dimensional system of dipole particles confined in a parabolic trap”. Munarin FF, Ferreira WP, Farias GA, Peeters FM, Physical review : E : statistical, nonlinear, and soft matter physics 78, 031405 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.78.031405
Abstract: The ordered configurations of a monolayer of interacting magnetic dipoles confined in a circular parabolic potential are investigated as a function of the dipole moment of the particles. Despite the circular confinement, we find very asymmetric ordered structures like chains and Y-shaped configurations when a magnetic field is applied parallel to the plane of the particles. The normal-mode spectrum of the particles and its dependence on the magnetic field and the strength of the dipole moment of the particles are studied. The vibrational and rotational modes of the spectrum, which are associated with the stability of the system, are investigated in detail. The number of particles is varied and we found different ordering of the particles for different values of the dipole moment and the magnetic field. A ring structure with a large number of particles is observed for high values of the dipole moment of the particles.

“Homologous series of layered structures in binary and ternary Bi-Sb-Te-Se systems : ab initio study”. Govaerts K, Sluiter MHF, Partoens B, Lamoen D, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 89, 054106 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.89.054106
Abstract: In order to account explicitly for the existence of long-periodic layered structures and the strong structural relaxations in the most common binary and ternary alloys of the Bi-Sb-Te-Se system, we have developed a one-dimensional cluster expansion (CE) based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, which accounts for the Bi and Sb bilayer formation. Excellent interlayer distances are obtained with a van der Waals density functional. It is shown that a CE solely based on pair interactions is sufficient to provide an accurate description of the ground-state energies of Bi-Sb-Te-Se binary and ternary systems without making the data set of ab initio calculated structures unreasonably large. For the binary alloys A1−xQx (A=Sb, Bi; Q=Te, Se), a ternary CE yields an almost continuous series of (meta)stable structures consisting of consecutive A bilayers next to consecutive A2Q3 for 0<x<0.6. For x>0.6, the binary alloy segregates into pure Q and A2Q3. The Bi-Sb system is described by a quaternary CE and is found to be an ideal solid solution stabilized by entropic effects at T≠0 K but with an ordered structure of alternating Bi and Sb layers for x=0.5 at T=0 K. A quintuple CE is used for the ternary Bi-Sb-Te system, where stable ternary layered compounds with an arbitrary stacking of Sb2Te3, Bi2Te3, and Te-Bi-Te-Sb-Te quintuple units are found, optionally separated by mixed Bi/Sb bilayers. Electronic properties of the stable compounds were studied taking spin-orbit coupling into account.

“In-phase motion of Josephson vortices in stacked SNS Josephson junctions : effect of ordered pinning”. Berdiyorov GR, Savel'ev SE, Kusmartsev FV, Peeters FM, Superconductor science and technology 26, 125010 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1088/0953-2048/26/12/125010
Abstract: The dynamics of Josephson vortices (fluxons) in artificial stacks of superconducting-normal-superconducting Josephson junctions is investigated using the anisotropic time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory in the presence of a square/rectangular array of pinning centers (holes). For small values of the applied drive, fluxons in different junctions move out of phase, forming a periodic triangular lattice. A rectangular lattice of moving fluxons is observed at larger currents, which is in agreement with previous theoretical predictions (Koshelev and Aranson 2000 Phys. Rev. Lett. 85 3938). This 'superradiant' flux-flow state is found to be stable in a wide region of applied current. The stability range of this ordered state is considerably larger than the one obtained for the pinning-free sample. Clear commensurability features are observed in the current-voltage characteristics of the system with pronounced peaks in the critical current at (fractional) matching fields. The effect of density and strength of the pinning centers on the stability of the rectangular fluxon lattice is discussed. Predicted synchronized motion of fluxons in the presence of ordered pinning can be detected experimentally using the rf response of the system, where enhancement of the Shapiro-like steps is expected due to the synchronization.

“Influence of Al concentration on the optoelectronic properties of Al-doped MgO”. Sarmadian N, Saniz R, Lamoen D, Partoens B, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 86, 205129 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.86.205129
Abstract: We use density functional theory within the local density approximation to investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of Al-doped MgO. The concentrations considered range from 6% to 56%. In the latter case, we also compare the optical properties of the amorphous and crystalline phases. We find that, overall, the electronic properties of the crystalline phases change qualitatively little with Al concentration. On the other hand, the changes in the electronic structure in the amorphous phase are more important, most notably because of deep impurity levels in the band gap that are absent in the crystalline phase. This leads to observable effects in, e.g., the optical absorption edge and in the refractive index. Thus, the latter can be used to characterize the crystalline to amorphous transition with Al doping level.

Abstract: A far-infrared absorption study of electrons in lightly-doped GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattices is presented. Both weakly and strongly coupled superlattices are investigated, and the difference between intersubband transitions and transitions between extended minibands is demonstrated. At low temperatures, the absorption spectra are dominated by donor transitions. The 1s-2p(z) transition, which is intimately related to the intersubband transition, is observed. All experimental data are compared to an envelope function calculation for the miniband structure and a variational calculation for the donor energies. Excellent agreement between experiment and theory is achieved.

“Interband optical absorption in a circular graphene quantum dot”. Grujić, M, Zarenia M, Tadić, M, Peeters FM, Physica scripta T149, 014056 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1088/0031-8949/2012/T149/014056
Abstract: We investigate the energy levels and optical properties of a circular graphene quantum dot in the presence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to the dot. Based on the Dirac-Weyl equation and assuming zero outward current at the edge of the dot we present the results for two different types of boundary conditions, i.e. infinite-mass (IMBC) and zigzag boundary conditions. We found that the dot with zigzag edges displays a zero-energy state in the energy spectra while this is not the case for the IMBCs. For both boundary conditions, the confinement becomes dominated by the magnetic field, where the energy levels converge to the Landau levels as the magnetic field increases. The effect of boundary conditions on the electron-and hole-energy states is found to affect the interband absorption spectra, where we found larger absorption in the case of IMBCs. The selection rules for interband optical transitions are determined and discussed for both boundary conditions.

Abstract: We investigate the link between superconductivity and atomic vibrations in Nb3Sn films with a thickness ranging from 10 to 50 nm. The challenge of measuring the phonon density of states (PDOS) of these films has been tackled by employing the technique of nuclear inelastic scattering by Sn-119 isotopes to reveal the Sn-partial phonon density of states. With the support of ab initio calculations, we evaluate the effect of reduced film thickness on the PDOS. This approach allows us to estimate the changes in superconducting critical temperature T-c induced by phonon confinement, which turned out to be limited to a few tenths of K. The presented method is successful for the Nb3Sn system and paves the way for more systematic studies of the role of phonon confinement in Sn-containing superconductors.

“Manipulation of two-electron states by the electric field in stacked self-assembled dots”. Nowak MP, Szafran B, Peeters FM, Journal of physics : condensed matter 20, 395225 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1088/0953-8984/20/39/395225
Abstract: A pair of electrons in vertically stacked self-assembled quantum dots is studied and the singlettriplet energy splitting is calculated in an external electric field using the configuration-interaction method. We show that for double quantum dots the dependence of the singlet energy levels on the electric field involves multiple avoided crossings of three energy levels. The exchange interaction, i.e., the energy difference of the lowest triplet and lowest singlet states, can be tuned by an electric field in a wide range of several tens of meV. For electric fields exceeding a threshold value the exchange interaction becomes a linear function of the field when the two electrons in the singlet state start to occupy the same dot. We also consider non-symmetric confinement, non-perfectly aligned dots, in horizontal as well as vertical field orientation. In a stack of three vertically coupled dots the depth of the confinement in the central dot can be used to enhance the exchange interaction. For a deeper central dot the dependence of the exchange interaction on the electric field is anomalousit initially decreases when the field is applied in both directions parallel and antiparallel to the axis of the stack. Such a behavior is never observed for a pair of quantum dots.

Abstract: Starting from a model of microscopic interactions between C-70 molecules, we have developed a theory which describes the orientational dynamics and its coupling to lattice displacements in the rhombohedral phase of C-70 fullerite. The Landau free energy is calculated. We obtain a first-order phase transition to a monoclinic structure with the space group P2(1)/m. The transition is driven by the condensation of orientational quadrupoles at the F point of the Brillouin zone of the rhombohedral lattice. We find no evidence that the monoclinic structure is connected with the freezing in of orientations around the fivefold molecular axis. We calculate the lattice strains that are associated with the transition to the monoclinic structure. The theory is compared with a range of experimental data on the phase transition.

Abstract: We present model calculations based on a coherent tunneling picture, which reproduce well both the single-particle energy level position and the resonant current strength at two typical anticrossings, one involving two levels and the other three levels in a coherent mixer composed of two weakly coupled vertical quantum dots. An essential ingredient is the inclusion of higher degree terms to account for deviations from an ideal elliptical parabolic confining potential in realistic dots. We also calculate density plots of the mixed states for the modified potential.

Abstract: The nonlinear Schrodinger equation is solved on an infinitesimal thin ring or circle. We obtained the exact real wave functions with their corresponding energies for the ground state and the excited states. Critical values of the circle perimeter are found at which the ground state changes its structure and additional higher excited states appear. Also, the complex wave functions that correspond to energy levels with finite angular momentum are studied.

Abstract: Using the two-component Ginzburg-Landau model, we investigate the effect of sample size and magnitude and homogeneity of external magnetic field on the stability of fractional vortex states in a mesoscopic two-band superconducting disk. We found that each fractional state has a preferable sample size, for which the range of applied field in which the state is stable is pronouncedly large. Vice versa, there exists an optimal magnitude of applied field for which a large range of possible sample radii will support the considered fractional state. Finally, we show that the stability of fractional states can be enhanced even further by magnetic nanostructuring of the sample, i.e. by suitably chosen geometrical parameters and magnetic moment of a ferromagnetic dot placed on top of the superconducting disk. Abstract: In honeycomb Dirac systems with broken inversion symmetry, orbital magnetic moments coupled to the valley degree of freedom arise due to the topology of the band structure, leading to valley-selective optical dichroism. On the other hand, in Dirac systems with prominent spin-orbit coupling, similar orbital magnetic moments emerge as well. These moments are coupled to spin, but otherwise have the same functional form as the moments stemming from spatial inversion breaking. After reviewing the basic properties of these moments, which are relevant for a whole set of newly discovered materials, such as silicene and germanene, we study the particular impact that these moments have on graphene nanoengineered barriers with artificially enhanced spin-orbit coupling. We examine transmission properties of such barriers in the presence of a magnetic field. The orbital moments are found to manifest in transport characteristics through spin-dependent transmission and conductance, making them directly accessible in experiments. Moreover, the Zeeman-type effects appear without explicitly incorporating the Zeeman term in the models, i.e., by using minimal coupling and Peierls substitution in continuum and the tight-binding methods, respectively. We find that a quasiclassical view is able to explain all the observed phenomena.

Abstract: Diffusive properties of interacting magnetic dipoles confined in a parabolic narrow channel and in the presence of a periodic modulated (corrugated) potential along the unconfined direction are studied using Brownian dynamics simulations. We compare our simulation results with the analytical result for the effective diffusion coefficient of a single particle by Festa and d'Agliano [Physica A 90, 229 (1978)] and show the importance of interparticle interaction on the diffusion process. We present results for the diffusion of magnetic dipoles as a function of linear density, strength of the periodic modulation and commensurability factor.

Abstract: Electrons in double-layer semiconductor heterostructures experience a special type of spin-orbit interaction that arises in each layer from the perpendicular component of the Coulomb electric field created by electron-density fluctuations in the other layer. We show that this interaction, acting in combination with the usual spin-orbit interaction, can generate a spin current in one layer when a charge current is driven in the other. This effect is distinct symmetrywise from the spin-Hall drag. The spin current is not, in general, perpendicular to the drive current.

Abstract: We study the effect of a hydrogen atom on the thermal stability of a trapped CH3 molecule on graphene using ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. Due to the hydrogen-molecule interaction, enhanced pinning of the CH3 molecule is observed when it is positioned adjacent to the graphene site with the hydrogen atom. We discuss the formation process of such a stable configuration, which originates from different adhesion and migration energies of the hydrogen atom and the CH3 molecule. We also studied the effect of the CH3-H configuration on the electronic transport properties of graphene nanoribbons using first principles density-functional calculations. We found that the formation of the CH3-H structure results in extra features in the transmission spectrum due to the formation of strongly localized states, which are absent when the CH3 molecule is trapped on pristine graphene. Our findings will be useful in exploiting gas sensing properties of graphene, especially for selective detection of individual molecules. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The stable and metastable states of different configurations of a mesoscopic loop in the form of an eight is studied in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that for certain configurations the current is equal to zero for any value of the magnetic field leading to a magnetic field independent superconducting state. The state with fixed phase circulation becomes unstable when the momentum of the superconducting electrons reaches a critical value. At this moment the kinetic energy of the superconducting condensate becomes of the same order as the potential energy of the Cooper pairs and it leads to an instability. Numerical analysis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations shows that the absolute value of the order parameter changes gradually at the transition from a state with one phase circulation to another although the vorticity change occurs abruptly. Abstract: We study the influence of the inelastic relaxation time τ̃E of the quasiparticle distribution function f(E) on the phase slip process in quasi-one-dimensional superconducting rings at a temperature close to the critical temperature Tc. We find that the initial time of growth of the order parameter |Δ| in the phase slip core after the phase slip is a nonmonotonic function of τ̃E which has a maximum at τ̃E≃τ̃GL=πℏ/8kB(Tc−T) and has a tendency to saturate for large τ̃E⪢τ̃GL. The effective heating of the electron subsystem due to the increase in |Δ| in the phase slip center together with the above effect result in a nonmonotonic dependence of the number of subsequent phase slips on τ̃E in rings of relatively large radius (in which each phase slip reduces the current density to a small fraction of its initial value). During the phase slip process the order parameter distribution has two peaks near the phase slip core due to the diffusion of the nonequilibrium quasiparticles from that region.
