Abstract |
The interaction between electrons and plasmons in trilayer graphene is investigated within the Overhauser approach resulting in the “plasmaron” quasiparticle. This interaction is cast into a field theoretical problem, and its effect on the energy spectrum is calculated using improved Wigner-Brillouin perturbation theory. The plasmaron spectrum is shifted with respect to the bare electron spectrum by ΔE(k)∼150−200meV for ABC stacked trilayer graphene and for ABA trilayer graphene by ΔE(k)∼30−150 meV[ ΔE(k) ∼1 −5meV] for the hyperbolic (linear) part of the spectrum. The shift in general increases with the electron concentration and electron momentum. The dispersion of plasmarons is more pronounced in ABC stacked than in ABA stacked trilayer graphene, because of the different energy band structure and their different plasmon dispersion. |

Abstract |
Since the discovery of graphene, a broad range of two-dimensional (2D) materials has captured the attention of the scientific communities. Materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) family, have shown promising semiconducting and insulating properties that are very appealing for the semiconductor industry. Recently, the possibility of taking advantage of the properties of 2D-based heterostructures has been investigated for low-power nanoelectronic applications. In this work, we aim at evaluating the relation between the nature of the materials used in such heterostructures and the amplitude of the layer-to-layer charge transfer induced by an external electric field, as is typically present in nanoelectronic gated devices. A broad range of combinations of TMDs, graphene, and hBN has been investigated using density functional theory. Our results show that the electric field induced charge transfer strongly depends on the nature of the 2D materials used in the van der Waals heterostructures and to a lesser extent on the relative orientation of the materials in the structure. Our findings contribute to the building of the fundamental understanding required to engineer electrostatically the doping of 2D materials and to establish the factors that drive the charge transfer mechanisms in electron tunneling-based devices. These are key ingredients for the development of 2D -based nanoelectronic devices. |

Abstract |
Atomic collapse is a phenomenon inherent to relativistic quantum mechanics where electron states dive in the positron continuum for highly charged nuclei. This phenomenon was recently observed in graphene. Here we investigate a novel collapse phenomenon when multiple sub- and supercritical charges of equal strength are put close together as in a molecule. We construct a phase diagram which consists of three distinct regions: (1) subcritical, (2) frustrated atomic collapse, and (3) molecular collapse. We show that the single impurity atomic collapse resonances rearrange themselves to form molecular collapse resonances which exhibit a distinct bonding, anti-bonding and non-bonding character. Here we limit ourselves to systems consisting of two and three charges. We show that by tuning the distance between the charges and their strength a high degree of control over the molecular collapse resonances can be achieved. |

Abstract |
The chiral p-wave order parameter in Sr2RuO4 would make it a special case amongst the unconventional superconductors. A consequence of this symmetry is the possible existence of superconducting domains of opposite chirality. At the boundary of such domains, the locally suppressed condensate can produce an intrinsic Josephson junction. Here, we provide evidence of such junctions using mesoscopic rings, structured from Sr2RuO4 single crystals. Our order parameter simulations predict such rings to host stable domain walls across their arms. This is verified with transport experiments on loops, with a sharp transition at 1.5 K, which show distinct critical current oscillations with periodicity corresponding to the flux quantum. In contrast, loops with broadened transitions at around 3 K are void of such junctions and show standard Little-Parks oscillations. Our analysis demonstrates the junctions are of intrinsic origin and makes a compelling case for the existence of superconducting domains. |

Abstract |
Colloidal copper(I) sulfide (Cu2-xS) nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted much attention for a wide range of applications because of their unique optoelectronic properties, driving scientists to explore the potential of using Cu2-xS NCs as seeds in the synthesis of heteronanocrystals to achieve new multifunctional materials. Herein, we developed a multistep synthesis strategy toward Cu2-xS/ZnS heteronanorods. The Janus-type Cu2-xS/ZnS heteronanorods are obtained by the injection of hexagonal high-chalcocite Cu2-xS seed NCs in a hot zinc oleate solution in the presence of suitable surfactants, 20 s after the injection of sulfur precursors. The Cu2-xS seed NCs undergo rapid aggregation and coalescence in the first few seconds after the injection, forming larger NCs that act as the effective seeds for heteronucleation and growth of ZnS. The ZnS heteronucleation occurs on a single (100) facet of the Cu2-xS seed NCs and is followed by fast anisotropic growth along a direction that is perpendicular to the c-axis, thus leading to Cu2-xS/ZnS Janus-type heteronanorods with a sharp heterointerface. Interestingly, the high-chalcocite crystal structure of the injected Cu2-xS seed NCs is preserved in the Cu2-xS segments of the heteronanorods because of the highthermodynamic stability of this Cu2-xS phase. The Cu2-xS/ZnS heteronanorods are subsequently converted into single-component Cu2-xS and CuInS2 nanorods by postsynthetic topotactic cation exchange. This work expands the possibilities for the rational synthesis of colloidal multicomponent heteronanorods by allowing the design principles of postsynthetic heteroepitaxial seeded growth and nanoscale cation exchange to be combined, yielding access to a plethora of multicomponent heteronanorods with diameters in the quantum confinement regime. |

Abstract |
Electron tomography has become a cornerstone technique for the visualization of nanoparticle morphology in three dimensions. However, to obtain in-depth information about a nanoparticle beyond surface faceting and morphology, different electron microscopy signals must be combined. The most notable examples of these combined signals include annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) with different collection angles and the combination of ADF-STEM with energy-dispersive X-ray or electron energy loss spectroscopies. Here, the experimental and computational development of various multimode tomography techniques in connection to the fundamental materials science challenges that multimode tomography has been instrumental to overcoming are summarized. Although the techniques can be applied to a wide variety of compositions, the study is restricted to metal and metal oxide nanoparticles for the sake of simplicity. Current challenges and future directions of multimode tomography are additionally discussed. |

Abstract |
Multimodal contrast agents, which take advantage of different imaging modalities, have emerged as an interesting approach to overcome the technical limitations of individual techniques. We developed hybrid nanoparticles comprising an iron oxide core and an outer gold spiky layer, stabilized by a biocompatible polymeric shell. The combined magnetic and optical properties of the different components provide the required functionalities for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), and fluorescence imaging. The fabrication of such hybrid nanoprobes comprised the adsorption of small gold nanoparticles onto premade iron oxide cores, followed by controlled growth of spiky gold shells. The gold layer thickness and branching degree (tip sharpness) can be controlled by modifying both the density of Au nanoparticle seeds on the iron oxide cores and the subsequent nanostar growth conditions. We additionally demonstrated the performance of these hybrid multifunctional nanoparticles as multimodal contrast agents for correlative imaging of in vitro cell models and ex vivo tissues. |

Abstract |
The energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) spectra of several carbon allotropes (non-hydrogenated and hydrogenated face-centered cubic (FCC) carbon, rhombohedral carbon, glitter, hexagonite and lonsdaleite) are calculated within the supercell-core-excited density functional theory approach. In particular an experimental ELNES spectrum of new diamond (n-diamond) [Konyashin et al., Diamond Relat. Mater. 10, (2001) 99102] is compared with the ELNES spectra of FCC carbon, rhombohedral carbon and the so-called glitter structure. Our calculations show that the ELNES spectrum considered in that publication cannot be that of FCC carbon. |

Abstract |
We propose an effective potential for an excess electron near the helium liquid-vapor interface that takes into account the diffuseness of the liquid-vapor interface and the classical image potential. The splitting of the first two excited states of the excess electron bound to the helium liquid-vapor interface as a function of an external constant electric field applied perpendicular to the interface is in excellent agreement with recent experiments. The effect of a parallel magnetic field on the energy levels are calculated. Single-electron tunneling of the electron out of its surface state is studied as a function of the electric field applied to the system. We found that the tunneling time has a linear dependence on the electric field. |

Abstract |
By means of synchrotron x-ray and electron diffraction, we studied the structural changes at the charge order transition T-CO = 176 K in the mixed-valence quadruple perovskite (NaMn3)Mn4O12. Below T-CO we find satellite peaks indicating a commensurate structural modulation with the same propagation vector q = ( 1/2,0,-1/2) of the CE magnetic structure that orders at low temperatures, similarly to the case of simple perovskites such as La0.5Ca0.5MnO3. In the present case, the modulated structure, together with the observation of a large entropy change at T-CO, gives evidence of a rare case of full Mn3+/Mn4+ charge and orbital order, consistent with the Goodenough-Kanamori model. |

Abstract |
The series Sr2MnO2Cu1.5(S1-xSex)(2) (0 <= x <= 1) contains mixed-valent Mn ions (Mn2+/Mn3+) in MnO2 sheets which are separated by copper-deficient antifluorite-type Cu(2-delta)Ch(2) layers with delta similar to 0.5. The compounds crystallize in the structure type first described for Sr2Mn3Sb2O2 and are described in the I4/mmm space group at ambient temperatures. Below about 250 K, ordering between Cu+ ions and tetrahedral vacancies occurs which is long-range and close to complete in the sulfide-containing end member of the series Sr2MnO2Cu1.5S2 but which occurs over shorter length scales as the selenide content increases. The superstructure is an orthorhombic 2 root 2a x root 2a x c expansion in Ibam of the room temperature cell. For x > 0.3 there are no superstructure reflections evident in the X-ray or neutron diffraction patterns, and the I4/mmm description is valid for the average structure at all temperatures. However, in the pure selenide end member, Sr2MnO2Cu1.5Se2, diffuse scattering in electron diffractograms and modulation in high resolution lattice image profiles may arise from short-range Cu/vacancy order. All members of the series exhibit long-range magnetic order. In the sulfide-rich end member and in compounds with x < 0.1 in the formula Sr2MnO2Cu1.5(S1-xSex)(2), which show well developed superstructures due to long-range Cu/vacancy order, the magnetic structure has a (1/4 1/4 0) propagation vector in which ferromagnetic zigzag chains of Mn moments in the MnO2 sheets are coupled antiferromagnetically in an arrangement described as the CE-type magnetic structure and found in many mixed-valent perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper type oxide manganites. In these cases the magnetic cell is an a x 2b x c expansion of the low temperature Ibam structural cell. For x >= 0.2 in the formula Sr2MnO2Cu1.5(S1-xSex)(2) the magnetic structure has a (0 0 0) propagation vector and is similar to the A-type structure, also commonly adopted by some perovskite-related manganites, in which the Mn moments in the MnO2 sheets are coupled ferromagnetically and long-range antiferromagnetic order results from antiferromagnetic coupling between planes. In the region of the transition between the two different structural and magnetic long-range ordering schemes (0.1 < x < 0.2) the two magnetic structures coexist in the same sample. The evolution of the competition between magnetic ordering schemes and the length scale of the structural order with composition in Sr2MnO2Cu1.5(S1-xSex)(2) suggest that the changes in magnetic and structural order are related consequences of the introduction of chemical disorder. |

Abstract |
We demonstrate that in quantum-dot cavity systems, the interplay between acoustic phonons and photon losses introduces novel features and characteristic dependencies in the system dynamics. In particular, the combined action of both dephasing mechanisms strongly affects the transition from the weak-to the strong-coupling regime as well as the shape of the spectral triplet that represents the quantum-dot occupation in Fourier space. The width of the central peak in the triplet is expected to decrease with rising temperature, while the widths and heights of the side peaks depend nonmonotonically on the dot-cavity coupling. |

Abstract |
The magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconductors with nonzero thickness is studied using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We calculated the free energy, the expelled field, the total field profile, the Cooper-pair density, and the current density distribution. By putting a smaller superconducting disk or ring in the center of a larger ring, the properties change drastically. Extra ground-state transitions are found, where the total vorticity stays the same, but the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes by 1. Due to the magnetic coupling, the current in the external ring exhibits extra jumps at the transition fields where the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes. In this case, for certain temperatures, re-entrant behavior and switching on and off of the superconducting behavior of the rings are found as a function of the magnetic field. A H-T phase diagram is obtained for the situation where the inner ring has a higher critical temperature than the outer ring. An analytic expression for the magnetic coupling is obtained for thin rings and extreme type-II superconductors. |

Abstract |
The structure and defect structure of superconducting ferromagnetic bulk RuSr2GdCu2O8 has been investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution scanning transmission microscopy. Two distinct, but closely related structures, due to ordering of rotated RuO6 octahedra and due to Cu substitution in the Ru-O layer, have been revealed. The structure of Ru1-xSr2GdCu2+xO8-delta can be described as a periodic alteration along the c axis of CuO4 planes and RuO6 octahedra. The unit-cell parameters of this phase are root 2a(p) x root 2a(p) x 2c. The possible influence of this phase and defect structure on the sensitivity of the superconductivity and magnetic properties is discussed. Local defects such as 90 S domain boundaries, (130) antiphase boundaries, and the associated dislocations are analyzed. |

Abstract |
We study the dynamics of vortex shells in mesoscopic superconducting Corbino disks, where vortices form shells as recently observed in micrometer-sized Nb disks. Due to the interplay between the vortex-vortex interaction, the gradient Lorentz force and the (in)commensurability between the numbers of vortices in shells, the process of angular melting of vortex-shell configurations becomes complex. Angular melting can start either from the center of the disk (where the shear stress is maximum) or from its boundary (where the shear stress is minimum) depending on the specific vortex configuration. Furthermore, we found that two kinds of defects can exist in such vortex-shell structures: intrashell and intershell defects. An intrashell defect may lead to an inverse dynamic behavior, i.e., one of the vortex shells under a stronger driving force can rotate slower than the adjacent shell that is driven by a weaker Lorentz force. An intershell defect always locks more than two shells until the gradient of the Lorentz force becomes large enough to break the rigid-body rotation of the locked shells. Such a lock-unlock process leads to hysteresis in the angular velocities of the shells. |

Abstract |
The many-body correction to the band structure of a quasi-free-standing graphene layer is obtained within the Overhauser approach, where the electron-plasmon interaction is described as a field theoretical problem. We find that the Dirac-like spectrum is shifted by Delta E(k = 0), which is on the order of 50-150 meV, depending on the electron concentration n(e), and is in semiquantitative agreement with experimental data. The value of the Fermi velocity is renormalized by several percents and decreases with increasing electron concentration as found experimentally. |

Abstract |
Cyrogenic etching of silicon is envisaged to enable better control over plasma processing in the microelectronics industry, albeit little is known about the fundamental differences compared to the room temperature process. We here present molecular dynamics simulations carried out to obtain sticking probabilities, thermal desorption rates, surface diffusion speeds, and sputter yields of F, F2, Si, SiF, SiF2, SiF3, SiF4, and the corresponding ions on Si(100) and on SiF13 surfaces, both at cryogenic and near room temperature. The different surface behavior during conventional etching and cryoetching is discussed. F2 is found to be relatively reactive compared to other species like SiF03. Thermal desorption occurs at a significantly lower rate under cryogenic conditions, which results in an accumulation of physisorbed species. Moreover, ion incorporation is often observed for ions with energies of 30400 eV, which results in a relatively low net sputter yield. The obtained results suggest that the actual etching of Si, under both cryogenic and near room temperature conditions, is based on the complete conversion of the Si surface to physisorbed SiF4, followed by subsequent sputtering of these molecules, instead of direct sputtering of the SiF03 surface. |

Abstract |
We have studied the evolution of the structural modulation in epitaxial, c-axis-oriented, Bi2Sr2-xLaCuO6+delta thin films when varying the La content x and for a given x as a function of oxygen content. A series of thin films with 0 <= x <= 0.8 has been prepared in situ by rf-magnetron sputtering and characterized by R(T) measurements, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction techniques. The oxygen content of each individual film was varied by thermal annealing across the phase diagram. The evolution of the structural modulation has been thoroughly studied by x-ray diffraction in determining the variation of the amplitude of satellite reflections in special two axes 2 theta/theta-theta scans (reciprocal space scans). It is shown that the amplitude of the modulation along the c axis decreases strongly when x increases from 0 to 0.2. It is demonstrated that this variation is essentially governed by La content x and that changing the oxygen content by thermal treatments has a much lower influence, even becoming negligible for x > 0.2. Such study is important to understand the electronical properties of Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+gamma thin films. |

Abstract |
New layered structures corresponding to the general formula [PbBiO2]A(n+1)B(n)O(3n-1)Cl(2) Were prepared. Pb5BiFe3O10Cl2 (n = 3) and Pb5Bi2Fe4O13Cl2 (n = 4) are built as a stacking of truncated A(n+1)B(n)O(3n-1) perovskite blocks and alpha-PbO-type [A(2)O(2)](2+) (A = Pb, Bi) blocks combined with chlorine sheets. The alternation of these structural blocks can be represented as an intergrowth between the hematophanite and Sullen-type structural blocks. The crystal and-Magnetic structures of Pb5BiFe3O10Cl2 and Pb5Bi2Fe4O13Cl2 were investigated in the temperature range of 1.5-700 K using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy. Both compounds crystallize in the I4/mmm space group with the unit cell parameters a approximate to a(p) approximate to 3.92 angstrom (a unit-cell parameter of the perovskite-structure), c approximate to 43.0 angstrom for the n = 3 member and c approximate to 53.5 angstrom for the n = 4 member. Despite the large separation between the slabs containing the Fe3+ ions (nearly 14 angstrom), long-range antiferromagnetic order sets in below similar to 600 K with the G-type arrangement of the Fe magnetic moments aligned along the c-axis. The possibility of mixing d(0) and d(n) cations at the B sublattice of these structures was also demonstrated by preparing the Ti-substituted n = 4 member Pb6BiFe3TiO13Cl2. |

Abstract |
Using time-differential perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy we have measured the electric field gradient (EFG) at 111Cd probe nuclei in solid Ce in a pressure range up to 8 GPa. Covering various allotropic phases of Ce, we find that the value of the EFG in the cubic α phase is almost four times larger than in the cubic γ phase and close to values in the noncubic phases α′ and α″. These results together with the differences in time modulation of the spectra are interpreted as evidence for quadrupolar electronic charge-density ordering and symmetry lowering at the γ→α transition while the lattice remains face-centered cubic |

Abstract |
A thorough investigation was performed on the physical (mechanical, thermal, and hydrothermal stability) and chemical (ion exchange capacity and silanol number) characteristics of aluminosilicate FSMs, synthesized via a new successful short-time synthesis route using leached saponite and a low concentration of CTAB. Moreover, the influence of an additional Al incorporation, utilizing different aluminum sources, on the structure of the FSM derived from saponite is studied. A mesoporous aluminosilicate with a low Si/Al ratio of 12.8 is synthesized, and still has a very large surface area of 1130 m(2)/g and pore volume of 0.92 cm(3)/g. The aluminum-containing samples all have a high cation exchange capacity of around 1 mmol/9 while they still have a silanol number of about 0.9 OH/nm(2); both characteristics being interesting for high-yield postsynthesis modification reactions. Finally, a study is performed on the transformation of the aluminosilicates into their Bronsted acid form via the exchange with ammonium ions and a consecutive heat treatment. |

Abstract |
After the advent of energy-loss magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD) in 2006, rapid progress in theoretical understanding and in experimental performance was achieved, recently demonstrating a spatial resolution of better than 2 nm. Similar to the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism technique, EMCD is used to study atom specific magnetic moments. The latest generation of electron microscopes opens the road to the mapping of spin moments on the atomic scale with this method. Here the theoretical background to reach this challenging aim is elaborated. Numerical simulations of the L3 transition in an Fe specimen, based on a combination of the density-matrix approach for inelastic electron scattering with the propagation of the probe electron in the lattice potential indicate the feasibility of single spin mapping in the electron microscope. |

Abstract |
The magnetization of luminescent Er3+-doped PbF2 nanoparticles (formula Er0.3Pb0.7F2.3) has been studied. Despite the high concentration of the doping Er3+ ions and relatively large size (8 nm) of these nanoparticles we have found no deviation between field-cooled and zero-field-cooled magnetization curves down to T=0.35 K, which points out an ultralow blocking temperature for the reversal of magnetization. We also have found strongly deviating magnetization curves M(H/T) for different temperatures T. These results altogether show that the investigated nanoparticles are not superparamagnetic, but rather each Er3+ ion in these nanoparticles is found in a paramagnetic state down to very low temperatures, which implies the breakdown of the Néel-Brown giant spin model in the case of these nanoparticles. Calculations of magnetization within a paramagnetic model of noninteracting Er3+ ions completely support this conclusion. Due to the ultralow blocking temperature, these nanoparticles have a potential for magnetic field-induced nanoscale refrigeration with an option of their optical localization and temperature control. |
