Abstract |
Discrete electron tomography is a new approach for three-dimensional reconstruction of nanoscale objects. The technique exploits prior knowledge of the object to be reconstructed, which results in an improvement of the quality of the reconstructions. Through the combination of conventional transmission electron microscopy and discrete electron tomography with a model-based approach, quantitative structure determination becomes possible. In the present work, this approach is used to unravel the building scheme of Zeotile-4, a silica material with two levels of structural order. The layer sequence of slab-shaped building units could be identified. Successive layers were found to be related by a rotation of 120°, resulting in a hexagonal space group. The Zeotile-4 material is a demonstration of the concept of successive structuring of silica at two levels. At the first level, the colloid chemical properties of Silicalite-1 precursors are exploited to create building units with a slablike geometry. At the second level, the slablike units are tiled using a triblock copolymer to serve as a mesoscale structuring agent. |

Abstract |
Cubic as well as hexagonal single crystals of C70 have been grown and investigated by electron diffraction, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Several phase transitions have been detected and crystallographic models are proposed. Hexagonal crystals, stable at room temperature with c/a = 1.63 will undergo two transitions, upon cooling. First the c/a ratio will increase to 1.82 owing to c-axis allignment of the molecules; at a lower temperature the molecules will orientationally order, resulting in a monoclinic structure. |

New developments in the field of nanomaterials drive the need for quantitative characterization techniques that yield information down to the atomic scale. In this Review, we focus on the three-dimensional investigations of metal nanoparticles and their assemblies by electron tomography. This technique has become a versatile tool to understand the connection between the properties and structure or composition of nanomaterials. The different steps of an electron tomography experiment are discussed and we show how quantitative three-dimensional information can be obtained even at the atomic scale. |

Abstract |
Monolayer alpha-graphyne was recently proposed as a new all-carbon material having an electronic spectrum consisting of Dirac cones. Based on a first-principles investigation of bilayer alpha-graphyne, we show that the electronic band structure is qualitatively different from its monolayer form and depends crucially on the stacking mode of the two layers. Two stable stacking modes are found: a configuration with a gapless parabolic band structure, similar to AB stacked bilayer graphene, and another one which exhibits a doubled Dirac-cone spectrum. The latter can be tuned by an electric field with a gap opening rate of 0.3 eA. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC. |

Abstract |
We study the structural, mechanical and electronic properties of the two-dimensional (2D) allotrope of tin: tinene/stanene using first-principles calculation within density functional theory, implemented in a set of computer codes. Continuing the trend of the group-IV 2D materials graphene, silicene and germanene; tinene is predicted to have a honeycomb lattice with lattice parameter of a(0) = 4.62 angstrom and a buckling of d(0) = 0.92 angstrom. The electronic dispersion shows a Dirac cone with zero gap at the Fermi energy and a Fermi velocity of v(F) = 0.97 x 10(6) m s(-1); including spin-orbit coupling yields a bandgap of 0.10 eV. The monolayer is thermally stable up to 700 K, as indicated by first-principles molecular dynamics, and has a phonon dispersion without imaginary frequencies. We explore applied electric field and applied strain as functionalization mechanisms. Combining these two mechanisms allows for an induced bandgap up to 0.21 eV, whilst retaining the linear dispersion, albeit with degraded electronic transport parameters. |

Abstract |
Hierarchical semiconductors are the most important photocatalysts, especially for visible light-induced hydrogen production from water splitting. We demonstrate herein a hierarchical electrostatic assembly approach to hierarchical CdS/m-TiO2/G ternary photocatalyst, which exhibits high photoactivity and excellent photostability (more than twice the activity of pure CdS while 82% of initial photoactivity remained after 15 recycles during 80 h irradiation). The ternary nanojunction effect of the photocatalyst has been investigated from orbitals hybrid, bonding energy to atom-stress distortion and nano-interface fusion. And a coherent separation mechanism of charge carriers in the ternary system has been proposed at an atomic/nanoscale. This work offers a promising way to inhibit the photocorrosion of CdS and, more importantly, provide new insights for the design of ternary nanostructured photocatalysts with an ideal heterojunction. |

Abstract |
The vast majority of lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals (NCs) are currently based on either a single halide composition (CsPbCl3, CsPbBr3, and CsPbI3) or an alloyed mixture of bromide with either Cl- or I- [i.e., CsPb(Br:Cl)(3) or CsPb(Br:I)(3)]. In this work, we present the synthesis as well as a detailed optical and structural study of two halide alloying cases that have not previously been reported for LHP NCs: Cs2PbI2Cl2 NCs and triple halide CsPb(Cl:Br:I)(3) NCs. In the case of Cs2PbI2Cl2, we observe for the first time NCs with a fully inorganic Ruddlesden-Popper phase (RPP) crystal structure. Unlike the well-explored organic-inorganic RPP, here, the RPP formation is triggered by the size difference between the halide ions. These NCs exhibit a strong excitonic absorption, albeit with a weak photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). In the case of the triple halide CsPb(Cl:Br:I)(3) composition, the NCs comprise a CsPbBr2Cl perovskite crystal lattice with only a small amount of incorporated iodide, which segregates at RPP planes' interfaces within the CsPb(Cl:Br:I)(3) NCs. Supported by density functional theory calculations and postsynthetic surface treatments to enhance the PLQY, we show that the combination of iodide segregation and defective RPP interfaces are most likely linked to the strong PL quenching observed in these nanostructures. In summary, this work demonstrates the limits of halide alloying in LHP NCs because a mixture that contains halide ions of very different sizes leads to the formation of defective RPP interfaces and a severe quenching of LHP NC's optical properties. |

Abstract |
Three-dimensional strontium ruthenate (SrRuO3) is an itinerant ferromagnet that features Weyl points acting as sources of emergent magnetic fields, anomalous Hall conductivity, and unconventional spin dynamics. Integrating SrRuO3 in oxide heterostructures is potentially a novel route to engineer emergent electrodynamics, but its electronic band topology in the two-dimensional limit remains unknown. Here we show that ultrathin SrRuO3 exhibits spin-polarized topologically nontrivial bands at the Fermi energy. Their band anticrossings show an enhanced Berry curvature and act as competing sources of emergent magnetic fields. We control their balance by designing heterostructures with symmetric (SrTiO3/SrRuO3/SrTiO3 and SrIrO3/SrRuO3/SrIrO3) and asymmetric interfaces (SrTiO3/SrRuO3/SrIrO3). Symmetric structures exhibit an interface-tunable single-channel anomalous Hall effect, while ultrathin SrRuO3 embedded in asymmetric structures shows humplike features consistent with multiple Hall contributions. The band topology of two-dimensional SrRuO3 proposed here naturally accounts for these observations and harmonizes a large body of experimental results. |

Abstract |
Solid solutions of BiFe1xMnxO3 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) were prepared at ambient pressure and at 6 GPa. The ambient-pressure (AP) phases crystallize in space group R3c similarly to BiFeO3. The high-pressure (HP) phases crystallize in space group R3c for x = 0.05 and in space group Pnma for 0.15 ≤ x ≤ 0.4. The structure of HP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 was investigated using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. HP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 has a PbZrO3-related √2ap × 4ap × 2√2ap (ap is the parameter of the cubic perovskite subcell) superstructure with a = 5.60125(9) Å, b = 15.6610(2) Å, and c = 11.2515(2) Å similar to that of Bi0.82La0.18FeO3. A remarkable feature of this structure is the unconventional octahedral tilt system, with the primary ab0a tilt superimposed on pairwise clockwise and counterclockwise rotations around the b-axis according to the oioi sequence (o stands for out-of-phase tilt, and i stands for in-phase tilt). The (FeMn)O6 octahedra are distorted, with one longer metaloxygen bond (2.222.23 Å) that can be attributed to a compensation for covalent BiO bonding. Such bonding results in the localization of the lone electron pair on Bi3+ cations, as confirmed by electron localization function analysis. The relationship between HP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 and antiferroelectric structures of PbZrO3 and NaNbO3 is discussed. On heating in air, HP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 irreversibly transforms to AP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 starting from about 600 K. Both AP and HP phases undergo an antiferromagnetic ordering at TN ≈ 485 and 520 K, respectively, and develop a weak net magnetic moment at low temperatures. Additionally, ceramic samples of AP-BiFe0.75Mn0.25O3 show a peculiar phenomenon of magnetization reversal. |

Abstract |
A platform for producing stabilized Pt atoms and clusters through the combination of an N-doped graphene support and atomic layer deposition (ALD) for the Pt catalysts was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). It was determined, using imaging and spectroscopy techniques, that a wide range of N-dopant types entered the graphene lattice through covalent bonds without largely damaging its structure. Additionally and most notably, Pt atoms and atomic clusters formed in the absence of nanoparticles. This work provides a new strategy for experimentally producing stable atomic and subnanometer cluster catalysts, which can greatly assist the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) development by producing the ultimate surface area to volume ratio catalyst. |

Abstract |
The purpose of this Brief Report is to point out the mistake in a formula for anisotropic electron scattering, previously published in Phys. Rev. A 41, 1112 (1990), which is widely used in Monte Carlo models of gas discharges. Anisotropic electron scattering is investigated based on the screened Coulomb potential between electrons and neutral atoms. The approach is also applied for electron scattering by nonpolar neutral molecules. Differential cross sections for electron scattering by Ar, N2, and CH4 are constructed on the basis of momentum and integrated cross sections. The formula derived in this paper is useful for Monte Carlo simulations of gas discharges. |

Abstract |
A two-dimensional self-consistent fluid model coupled with the full set of Maxwell equations is established to investigate the phase-shift effect on the transient behaviour of electrodynamics and power deposition in a hydrogen capacitively coupled plasma. The effect has been examined at 13.56 MHz and 100 MHz, respectively, because of the different phase-shift modulation when the electromagnetic effects are dominant. The results indicate that the spatiotemporal distributions of the plasma characteristics obtained for various phase-shift cases are obviously different both in shape and especially in absolute values. Indeed, when the phase difference varies from 0 to π, there is an increase in the electron flux, thus the power deposition becomes more pronounced. At the frequency of 13.56 MHz, the axial electron flux in the bulk plasma becomes uniform along the z-axis, and the radial electron flux exhibits two peaks within one period at the reverse-phase case, whereas the oscillation is less pronounced at the in-phase case. Furthermore, in the very high frequency discharge, the radial electron flux is alternately positive and negative with four peaks during one period, and the ionization mainly occurs in the sheath region, due to the prominent power deposition there at a phase difference equal to π. |

Abstract |
A procedure to derive the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory from the multiband BCS Hamiltonian is developed in a general case with an arbitrary number of bands and arbitrary interaction matrix. It combines the standard Gor'kov truncation and a subsequent reconstruction in order to match accuracies of the obtained terms. This reconstruction recovers the phenomenological GL theory as obtained from the Landau model of phase transitions but offers explicit microscopic expressions for the relevant parameters. Detailed calculations are presented for a three-band system treated as a prototype multiband superconductor. It is demonstrated that the symmetry in the coupling matrix may lead to the chiral ground state with the phase frustration, typical for systems with broken time-reversal symmetry. Abstract |
The double phosphate Ca9In(PO4)(7) was obtained by solid-state reaction and was studied by room and high-temperature Xray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, second-harmonic generation (SHG) technique, differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric and conductivity measurements. The beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) room-temperature phase is related to the mineral whitlockite and is similar to beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2). It has space group R (3) over barc, with unit cell parameters: a = 10.4008(1) Angstrom, c = 37.272(1) Angstrom, Z = 6. The structure was refined by the Rietveld method (R-wp = 4.69, R-I = 1.81). A reversible first-order beta <----> beta' phase transition of the ferroelectric type with T-c = 902 K is revealed by SHG, differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric measurements. The centrosymmetric beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) (973 K) has space group R (3) over barc, a = 10.4611(2) Angstrom, c = 37.874 (1) Angstrom (R-wp = 4.27, R-I = 4.11). Compared to the low-temperature beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) structure, beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) can be described as an orientational disordering of the P1O(4) tetrahedra together with a calcium disordering on the M3 site. Abstract |
We revisit the theory of the pseudo magnetic field as induced by strain in graphene using the tight- binding approach. A systematic expansion of the hopping parameter and the deformation of the lattice vectors is presented from which we obtain an expression for the pseudo magnetic field for low energy electrons. We generalize and discuss previous results and propose a novel effective Hamiltonian. The contributions of the different terms to the pseudo field expression are investigated for a model triaxial strain profile and are compared with the full solution. Our work suggests that the previous proposed pseudo magnetic field expression is valid up to reasonably high strain (15%) and there is no K-dependent pseudo-magnetic field. |

Abstract |
The conversion of CO2 and CH4 into value-added chemicals is studied in a new geometry of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) with multi-electrodes, dedicated to the treatment of high gas flow rates. Gas chromatography is used to define the CO2 and CH4 conversion as well as the yields of the products of decomposition (CO, O2 and H2) and of recombination (C2H4, C2H6 and CH2O). The influence of three parameters is investigated on the conversion: the CO2 and CH4 flow rates, the plasma power and the nature of the carrier gas (argon or helium). The energy efficiency of the CO2 conversion is estimated and compared with those of similar atmospheric plasma sources. Our DBD reactor shows a good compromise between a good energy efficiency and the treatment of a large CO2 flow rate. |

Abstract |
The recent creation of electron vortex beams and their first practical application motivates a better understanding of their properties. Here, we develop the theory of free electron vortices with quantized angular momentum, based on solutions of the Schrödinger equation for cylindrical boundary conditions. The principle of transformation of a plane wave into vortices with quantized angular momentum, their paraxial propagation through round magnetic lenses, and the effect of partial coherence are discussed. |

Abstract |
A two-dimensional model is presented that describes the behavior of argon metastable atoms, copper atoms, and copper ions in an argon direct. current glow discharge, in the standard cell of the VG9000 glow discharge mass spectrometer for analyzing flat samples. The model is combined with a previously developed model for the electrons, argon ions, and atoms in the same cell to obtain an overall picture of the glow discharge, The results of the present model comprise the number densities of the described plasma species, the relative contributions of different production and loss processes for the argon metastable atoms, the thermalization profile of the sputtered copper atoms, the relative importance of the different ionization mechanisms for the copper atoms, the ionization degree of copper, the copper ion-to-argon ion density ratio, and the relative roles of copper ions, argon ions, and atoms in the sputtering process. All these quantities are calculated for a range of voltages and pressures, Moreover, since the sticking coefficient of copper atoms on solid surfaces is not well-known in the literature, the influence of this parameter on the results is briefly discussed. |

Nanocrystalline Pd thin films containing coherent growth twin boundaries are deformed using on-chip nanomechanical testing. A large work-hardening capacity is measured. The origin of the observed behavior is unraveled using transmission electron microscopy and shows specific dislocations and twin boundaries interactions. The results indicate the potential for large strength and ductility balance enhancement in Pd films, as needed in membranes for H technologies. |

Abstract |
The concept of template-confined chemical reactions allows the synthesis of complex molecules that would hardly be producible through conventional method. This idea was developed to produce high quality nanocrystals more than 20 years ago. However, template-mediated assembly of colloidal nanocrystals is still at an elementary level, not only because of the limited templates suitable for colloidal assemblies, but also because of the poor control over the assembly of nanocrystals within a confined space. Here, we report the design of a new system called “supracrystalline colloidal eggs” formed by controlled assembly of nanocrystals into complex colloidal supracrystals through superlattice-matched epitaxial overgrowth along the existing colloidosomes. Then, with this concept, we extend the supracrystalline growth to lattice-mismatched binary nanocrystal superlattices, in order to reach anisotropic superlattice growths, yielding freestanding binary nanocrystal supracrystals that could not be produced previously. |

Abstract |
One of the ultimate goals in the study of metal clusters is the correlation between the atomic-scale organization and their physicochemical properties. However, direct observation of the atomic organization of such minuscule metal clusters is heavily hindered by radiation damage imposed by the different characterization techniques. We present direct evidence of the structural arrangement, at an atomic level, of luminescent silver species stabilized in faujasite (FAU) zeolites using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. Two different silver clusters were identified in Ag-FAU zeolites, a trinuclear silver species associated with green emission and a tetranuclear silver species related to yellow emission. By combining direct imaging with complementary information obtained from X-ray powder diffraction and Rietveld analysis, we were able to elucidate the main differences at an atomic scale between luminescent (heat-treated) and nonluminescent (cation-exchanged) Ag-FAU zeolites. It is expected that such insights will trigger the directed synthesis of functional metal nanocluster-zeolite composites with tailored luminescent properties. |

Abstract |
Plasma-based CO2 conversion is gaining increasing interest worldwide. A large research effort is devoted to improving the energy efficiency. For this purpose, it is very important to understand the underlying mechanisms of the CO2 conversion. The latter can be obtained by computer modeling, describing in detail the behavior of the various plasma species and all relevant chemical processes. However, the accuracy of the modeling results critically depends on the accuracy of the assumed input data, like cross sections. This is especially true for the cross section of electron impact dissociation, as the latter process is believed
to proceed through electron impact excitation, but it is not clear from the literature which excitation channels effectively lead to dissociation. Therefore, the present paper discusses the effect of different electron impact dissociation cross sections reported in the literature on the calculated CO2 conversion, for a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and a microwave (MW) plasma. Comparison is made to experimental data for the DBD case, to elucidate which cross section might be the most realistic. This comparison reveals that the cross sections proposed
by Itikawa and by Polak and Slovetsky both seem to underestimate the CO2 conversion. The cross sections recommended by Phelps with thresholds of 7 eV and 10.5 eV yield a CO2 conversion only slightly lower than the experimental data, but the sum of both cross sections overestimates the values, indicating that these cross sections represent dissociation, but most probably also include other (pure excitation) channels. Our calculations indicate that the choice of the electron impact dissociation cross section is crucial for the DBD, where this process is the dominant mechanism for CO2 conversion. In the MW plasma, it is only significant at pressures up to 100 mbar, while it is of minor importance for higher pressures, when dissociation proceeds mainly through collisions of CO2 with heavy particles. |

Abstract |
Transparent photocatalytic TiO2 thin films hold great potential in the development of self-cleaning glass sur-
faces, but suffer from a poor visible light response that hinders the application under actual sunlight. To alleviate this problem, the photocatalytic film can be modified with plasmonic nanoparticles that interact very effectively with visible light. Since the plasmonic effect is strongly concentrated in the near surroundings of the nano- particle surface, an approach is presented to embed the plasmonic nanostructures in the TiO2 matrix itself, rather than deposit them loosely on the surface. This way the interaction interface is maximised and the plasmonic effect can be fully exploited. In this study, pre-fabricated gold nanoparticles are made compatible with the organic medium of a TiO2 sol-gel coating suspension, resulting in a one-pot coating suspension. After spin coating, homogeneous, smooth, highly transparent and photoactive gold-embedded anatase thin films are ob- tained. |
