“Heterometal nanoparticles from Ru-based molecular clusters covalently anchored onto functionalized carbon nanotubes and nanofibers”. Vidick D, Ke X, Devillers M, Poleunis C, Delcorte A, Moggi P, Van Tendeloo G, Hermans S, Beilstein journal of nanotechnology 6, 1287 (2015). http://doi.org/10.3762/bjnano.6.133
Abstract: Heterometal clusters containing Ru and Au, Co and/or Pt are anchored onto carbon nanotubes and nanofibers functionalized with chelating phosphine groups. The cluster anchoring yield is related to the amount of phosphine groups available on the nanocarbon surface. The ligands of the anchored molecular species are then removed by gentle thermal treatment in order to form nanoparticles. In the case of Au-containing clusters, removal of gold atoms from the clusters and agglomeration leads to a bimodal distribution of nanoparticles at the nanocarbon surface. In the case of Ru-Pt species, anchoring occurs without reorganization through a ligand exchange mechanism. After thermal treatment, ultrasmall (1-3 nm) bimetal Ru-Pt nanoparticles are formed on the surface of the nanocarbons. Characterization by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) confirms their bimetal nature on the nanoscale. The obtained bimetal nanoparticles supported on nanocarbon were tested as catalysts in ammonia synthesis and are shown to be active at low temperature and atmospheric pressure with very low Ru loading.

“Infrared to terahertz absorption window in mono- and multi-layer graphene systems”. Xiao YM, Xu W, Peeters FM, Optics communications 328, 135 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.optcom.2014.04.079
Abstract: We present a theoretical study on optical properties such as optical conductance and light transmission coefficient for mono- and multi-layer graphene systems with AB- and ABC-stacking. Considering an air/graphene/dielectric-water structure, the optical coefficients for those graphene systems are examined and compared. The universal optical conductance sigma(N)(0)=N pi e(2)/(2h) for N layer graphene systems in the visible region is verified. For N 3 layer graphene, the mini-gap induced absorption edges can be observed in odd layers AB-stacked multilayer graphene, where the number and position of the absorption edges are decided by the layers number N. Meanwhile, we can observe the optical absorption windows for those graphene systems in the infrared to terahertz bandwidth (0.2-150 THz). The absorption window is induced by different transition energies required for inter- and intra-band optical absorption channels. We find that the depth and width of the absorption window can be tuned not only via varying temperature and electron density but also by changing the number of graphene layers and the stacking order. These theoretical findings demonstrate that mono- and multi-layer graphene systems can be applied as frequency tunable optoelectronic devices working in infrared to terahertz bandwidth. Abstract: We report ferromagnetic, T-C = 240 K, and metallic, T-MI = 250 K, behaviors of a three unit cell thick interface engineered lanthanum manganite film, grown by metalorganic aerosol deposition technique on SrTiO3(100) substrates. Atomically resolved electron microscopy and chemical analysis show that ultrathin manganite films start to grow with La-O layer on a strongly Mn/Ti-intermixed interface, engineered by an additional deposition of 2 u.c. of Sr-Mn-O. Such interface engineering results in a hole-doped manganite layer and stabilizes ferromagnetism and metallic conductivity down to the thickness of d = 3 u.c. The films with d = 8 u.c. demonstrate a bulk-like transport behavior with T-MI similar to T-C = 310 – 330 K. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Scanning electron microscopy, focused ion beam (FIB), and transmission electron microscopy are combined to study the intergrowth of 90 degrees rotational components and of ramps in coffin-shaped ZSM-5 crystals. The 90 degrees rotational boundaries with local zig-zag features between different intergrowth components are observed in the main part of crystal. Also a new kind of displacement boundary is described. At the displacement boundary there is a shift of the unit cells along the boundary without a change in orientation. Based on lamellae prepared with FIB from different positions of the ramps and crystal, the orientation relationships between ramps and the main part of the crystal are studied and the three-dimensional morphology and growth mechanism of the ramp are illustrated.

Abstract: Ion irradiation of carbon nanotubes very often leads to defect formation. However, we have recently shown that Ar ion irradiation in a limited energy window of 1025 eV may enhance the initial cap nucleation process, when the carbon network is in contact with the metal nanocatalyst. Here, we employ reactive molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate that ion irradiation in a higher energy window of 1035 eV may also heal network defects after the nucleation stage through a non-metal-mediated mechanism, when the carbon network is no longer in contact with the metal nanocatalyst. The results demonstrate the possibility of beneficially utilizing ions in e.g. plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition of carbon nanotubes.

Abstract: YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) (YBCO) grain boundaries characterized by a misalignment of the c-axes (45 degrees c-axis tilt or 45 degrees c-axis twist) have been obtained by employing a recently implemented biepitaxial technique. Junctions based on these grain boundaries exhibit good Josephson properties useful for applications. High values of the I(C)R(N) product and a Fraunhofer-like dependence of the critical current on the magnetic field, differently from traditional biepitaxial junctions, have been obtained. The correlation between transport properties and microstructure has been investigated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), which was also performed on previously measured junctions. The presence of atomically clean basal plane (BP) faced tilt boundaries, among other types of interfaces, has been shown. The possibility of selecting these kinds of boundaries by controlling film growth, and their possible advantages in terms of reproducibility and uniformity of the junction properties an discussed. The possibility of employing these junctions to explore the symmetry of the order parameter is also discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We numerically investigate the spin-orbit (SO) coupling effect on the magnetic flux evolution of energy and supercurrent in mesoscopic d-wave superconducting loops by solving the spin-generalized Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently. It is found that the energy spectrum splits when the SO interaction is involved and the Majorana zero mode can be realized in the [100] edges of square systems for an appropriate SO coupling strength. Superconducting phase transitions appear when the energy gap closes, accompanied by energy jumps between different energy parabolas in the ground state, which provides a possible mechanism to support fractional flux periodicity of supercurrent. Moreover, in the case of rectangular loops with SO coupling, the jumps of the ground-state energy gradually disappear by increasing the ratio of length to height of the sample, and a paramagnetic response with opposite direction of the screening current around zero flux value can occur in such systems.

Abstract: The microstructure and phase transitions in the perovskite-based ferroelectric lead scandium tantalate, Pb(Sc0.5Ta0.5)O-3 have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The effects of ordering of Sc and Ta cations are apparent in reciprocal space as well as in direct space images. High-resolution observations allow direct structure imaging of the domain structure. The structure of the low temperature ferroelectric phase is studied by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and electron microdiffraction. The relaxer behaviour of this paraelectric-ferroelectric transition is displayed by diffuse intensities in the SAED patterns at temperatures around the Curie point.

Abstract: High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) studies of the microstructure and specific defects in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) precursors and cubic boron nitride (c-BN) crystals made under high-pressure high-temperature conditions revealed the presence of half-nanotubes at the edges of the h-BN particles. Their sp(3) bonding tendency could strongly influence the nucleation rates of c-BN. The atomic resolution at extended dislocations was insufficient to allow us to determine the stacking fault energy in the c-BN crystals. Its mean value of 191 +/- 15 mJ m(-2) is of the same order of magnitude as that of diamond. High-frequency (94 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance studies on c-BN single crystals have produced new data on the D1 centres associated with the boron species. Ion-beam-induced luminescence measurements have indicated that c-BN is a very interesting luminescent material, which is characterized by four luminescence bands and exhibits a better resistance to ionizing radiation than CVD diamond.

“Model-based electron microscopy : from images toward precise numbers for unknown structure parameters”. Van Aert S, van den Broek W, Goos P, van Dyck D, Micron 43, 509 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.micron.2011.10.019
Abstract: Statistical parameter estimation theory is proposed as a method to quantify electron microscopy images. It aims at obtaining precise and accurate values for the unknown structure parameters including, for example, atomic column positions and types. In this theory, observations are purely considered as data planes, from which structure parameters have to be determined using a parametric model describing the images. The method enables us to measure positions of atomic columns with a precision of the order of a few picometers even though the resolution of the electron microscope is one or two orders of magnitude larger. Moreover, small differences in averaged atomic number, which cannot be distinguished visually, can be quantified using high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy images. Finally, it is shown how to optimize the experimental design so as to attain the highest precision. As an example, the optimization of the probe size for nanoparticle radius measurements is considered. It is also shown how to quantitatively balance signal-to-noise ratio and resolution by adjusting the probe size.

“Modeling of plasma and plasma-surface interactions for medical, environmental and nano applications”. Bogaerts A, Aerts R, Snoeckx R, Somers W, Van Gaens W, Yusupov M, Neyts E, Journal of physics : conference series 399, 012011 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1088/1742-6596/399/1/012011
Abstract: In this paper, an overview is given of modeling investigations carried out in our research group for a better understanding of plasmas used for medical, environmental and nano applications. The focus is both on modeling the plasma chemistry and the plasma-surface interactions. The plasma chemistry provides the densities and fluxes of the important plasma species. This information can be used as input when modeling the plasma-surface interactions. The combination of plasma simulations and plasma – surface interaction simulations provides a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying processes for these applications.
