Abstract: Recent years have seen a tremendous rise of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials, several of which were verified experimentally. However, most of the theoretical predictions to date rely on ab initio methods, at zero temperature and fluctuation-free, while one certainly expects detrimental quantum fluctuations at finite temperatures. Here, we present the solution of the quantum Heisenberg model for honeycomb/hexagonal lattices with anisotropic exchange interaction up to third nearest neighbors and in an applied field in arbitrary direction, which answers the question whether long-range magnetization can indeed survive in the ultrathin limit of materials, up to which temperature, and what the characteristic excitation (magnon) frequencies are, all essential to envisaged applications of magnetic 2D materials. We find that long-range magnetic order persists at finite temperature for materials with overall easy-axis anisotropy. We validate the calculations on the examples of monolayers CrI3, CrBr3, and MnSe2. Moreover, we provide an easy-to-use tool to calculate Curie temperatures of new 2D computational materials.

Abstract: Anammox, the oxidation of ammonium with nitrite, is a key microbial process in the nitrogen cycle. Under mesophilic conditions (below 40 °C), it is widely implemented to remove nitrogen from wastewaters lacking organic carbon. Despite evidence of the presence of anammox bacteria in high-temperature environments, reports on the cultivation of thermophilic anammox bacteria are limited to a short-term experiment of 2 weeks. This study showcases the adaptation of a mesophilic inoculum to thermophilic conditions, and its characterization. First, an attached growth technology was chosen to obtain the process. In an anoxic fixed-bed biofilm bioreactor (FBBR), a slow linear temperature increase from 38 to over 48 °C (0.05–0.07 °C d−1) was imposed to the community over 220 days, after which the reactor was operated at 48 °C for over 200 days. Maximum total nitrogen removal rates reached up to 0.62 g N L−1 d−1. Given this promising performance, a suspended growth system was tested. The obtained enrichment culture served as inoculum for membrane bioreactors (MBR) operated at 50 °C, reaching a maximum total nitrogen removal rate of 1.7 g N L−1 d−1 after 35 days. The biomass in the MBR had a maximum specific anammox activity of 1.1 ± 0.1 g NH4+-N g−1 VSS d−1, and the growth rate was estimated at 0.075–0.19 d−1. The thermophilic cultures displayed nitrogen stoichiometry ratios typical for mesophilic anammox: 0.93–1.42 g NO2--Nremoved g−1 NH4+-Nremoved and 0.16–0.35 g NO3--Nproduced g−1 NH4+-Nremoved. Amplicon and Sanger sequencing of the 16S rRNA genes revealed a disappearance of the original “Ca. Brocadia” and “Ca. Jettenia” taxa, yielding Planctomycetes members with only 94–95% similarity to “Ca. Brocadia anammoxidans” and “Ca. B. caroliniensis”, accounting for 45% of the bacterial FBBR community. The long-term operation of thermophilic anammox reactors and snapshot views on the nitrogen stoichiometry, kinetics and microbial community open up the development path of thermophilic partial nitritation/anammox. A first economic assessment highlighted that treatment of sludge reject water from thermophilic anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge may become attractive.

Abstract: The surface termination of MXenes greatly determines the electrochemical properties and ion kinetics on their surfaces. So far, hydroxyl-, oxygen-, and fluorine-terminated MXenes have been widely studied for energy storage applications. Recently, sulfur-functionalized MXene structures, which possess low diffusion barriers, have been proposed as candidate materials to enhance battery performance. We performed first-principles calculations on the structural, stability, electrochemical, and ion dynamic properties of Li-adsorbed sulfur-functionalized groups 3B, 4B, 5B, and 6B transition-metal (M)-based MXenes (i.e., M2CS2 with M = Sc, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and W). We performed phonon calculations, which indicated that all of the above M2CS2 MXenes, except for Sc, are dynamically stable at T = 0 K. The ground-state structure of each M2CS2 monolayer depends on the type of M atom. For instance, while sulfur prefers to sit at the FCC site on Ti2CS2, it occupies the HCP site of Cr-based MXene. We determined the Li adsorption configurations at different concentrations using the cluster expansion method. The highest maximum open-circuit voltages were computed for the group 4B element (i.e., Ti, Zr, and Hf)-based M2CS2, which are larger than 2.1 V, while their average voltages are approximately 1 V. The maximum voltage for the group 6B element (i.e., Cr, Mo, W)-based M2CS2 is less than 1 V, and the average voltage is less than 0.71 V. We found that S functionalization is helpful for capacity improvements over the O-terminated MXenes. In this respect, the computed storage gravimetric capacity may reach up to 417.4 mAh/g for Ti2CS2 and 404.5 mAh/g for V2CS2. Ta-, Cr-, Mo-, and W-based M2CS2 MXenes show very low capacities, which are less than 100 mAh/g. The Li surface diffusion energy barriers for all of the considered MXenes are less than 0.22 eV, which is favorable for high charging and discharging rates. Finally, ab initio molecular dynamic simulations performed at 400 K and bond-length analysis with respect to Li concentration verify that selected promising systems are robust against thermally induced perturbations that may induce structural transformations or distortions and undesirable Li release.

Abstract: This dataset comprises a large collection of atom probe tomography datasets collected from DIN 1.4970 alloy that was irradiated with Fe ions at different conditions. The DIN 1.4970 alloy is an austenitic stainless steel with 15 wt% Cr, 15 wt% Ni, a small addition of Ti. The full composition and characterization of our material can be found published elsewhere [1,2]. Some of our material was subjected to ageing heat treatments at different temperatures for different times. Small samples of our original material and aged material was irradiated at the Michigan Ion Beam Laboratory in 2017 with 4.5 MeV Fe ions up to 40 dpa at an average dose rate of 2×10−4 dpa/s. This was done at three different temperatures: 300, 450, and 600 ºC. Atom probe samples were made of the irradiated layers (approximately 1.5 micron deep) with focused ion beam and mounted on Microtip coupons. APT measurements took place on three CAMECA LEAP-HR systems located at CAES in Idaho Falls, USA (files beginning with R33), at Montanuniversität Leoben in Leoben, Austria (R21) and at Friedrich–Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany (R56).

Abstract: The autoregressive neural networks are emerging as a powerful computational tool to solve relevant problems in classical and quantum mechanics. One of their appealing functionalities is that, after they have learned a probability distribution from a dataset, they allow exact and efficient sampling of typical system configurations. Here we employ a neural autoregressive distribution estimator (NADE) to boost Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations of a paradigmatic classical model of spin-glass theory, namely, the two-dimensional Edwards-Anderson Hamiltonian. We show that a NADE can be trained to accurately mimic the Boltzmann distribution using unsupervised learning from system configurations generated using standard MCMC algorithms. The trained NADE is then employed as smart proposal distribution for the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. This allows us to perform efficient MCMC simulations, which provide unbiased results even if the expectation value corresponding to the probability distribution learned by the NADE is not exact. Notably, we implement a sequential tempering procedure, whereby a NADE trained at a higher temperature is iteratively employed as proposal distribution in a MCMC simulation run at a slightly lower temperature. This allows one to efficiently simulate the spin-glass model even in the low-temperature regime, avoiding the divergent correlation times that plague MCMC simulations driven by local-update algorithms. Furthermore, we show that the NADE-driven simulations quickly sample ground-state configurations, paving the way to their future utilization to tackle binary optimization problems.

Abstract: Reuse of growth medium after biomass harvesting is a cost-saving approach to improve the economic feasibility of algae mass cultivation. Algal exudates, cell debris and varying amounts of residual nutrients, impose challenges to the recycling of spent medium. In this study, the potential of combining reused medium from different algae species for growing monocultures of other algal strains was evaluated by making use of three successive cultivation setups with increasing volume; 400 mL in turbidostat mode, 2.6 L and 220 L in semi-continuous mode. Cultivation on replenished medium derived from Nannochloropsis sp. and Tisochrysis lutea, had no adverse effect on the productivity of either of the strains, regardless of whether they were grown in their own recycled medium or that of the other alga. Microfiltration of the reused medium proved to be sufficient to avoid cross-contamination. Moreover, a substantial average reduction in water footprint (77%) and nutrient cost (68% or 9 (sic).kg(-1) dry biomass) was achieved. Extension and validation of the medium recycling approach to other economically interesting algae species can contribute to improving the economic feasibility of large scale microalgae production systems.

Abstract: This work investigates the compatibility of Zr2AlC MAX phase-based ceramics with liquid LBE, and proposes a mechanism to explain the observed local Zr2AlC/LBE interaction. The ceramics were exposed to oxygen-poor (C-O <= 2.2 x 10(-10) mass%), static liquid LBE at 500 degrees C for 1000 h. A new Zr-2(Al,Bi,Pb)C MAX phase solid solution formed in-situ in the LBE-affected Zr2AlC grains. Out-of-plane ordering was favorable in the new solid solution, whereby A-layers with high and low-Bi/Pb contents alternated in the crystal structure, in agreement with first-principles calculations. Bulk Zr-2(Al,Bi,Pb)C was synthesized by reactive hot pressing to study the crystal structure of the solid solution by neutron diffraction.

Abstract: The immobilization of biomolecules at screen printed electrodes for biosensing applications is still an open challenge. To enrich the toolbox of bioelectrochemists, graphite screen printed electrodes (G-SPE) were modified with an electropolymerized film of pyrrole-2-carboxilic acid (Py-2-COOH), a pyrrole derivative rich in carboxylic acid functional groups. These functionalities are suitable for the covalent immobilization of biomolecular recognition layers. The electropolymerization was first optimized to obtain stable and conductive polymeric films, comparing two different electrolytes: sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and sodium perchlorate. The G-SPE modified with Py-2-COOH in 0.1 M SDS solution showed the required properties and were further tested. A proof-of-concept study for the development of an impedimetric sensor for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was carried out using the delipidated human serum albumin (hSA) as bioreceptor. The data interpretation was supported by size exclusion chromatography and small-angle X-ray scattering (SEC-SAXS) analysis of the bioreceptor-target complex and the preliminary results suggest the possibility to further develop this biosensing strategy for toxicological and analytical studies.

Abstract: We analyze the paradigmatic competition between intraband and crossband Cooper-pair formation in twoband superconductors, neglected in most works to date. We derive the phase-sensitive gap equations and describe the crossover between the intraband-dominated and the crossband-dominated regimes, delimited by a “gapless” state. Experimental signatures of crosspairing comprise notable gap splitting in the excitation spectrum, non-BCS behavior of gaps versus temperature, as well as changes in the pairing symmetry as a function of temperature. The consequences of these findings are illustrated on the examples of MgB2 and Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2.

Abstract: PdCl3 belongs to a novel class of Dirac materials with Dirac spin-gapless semiconducting characteristics. In this paper based, on first-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the effect of adatom adsorption, vacancy defects, electric field, strain, edge states and layer thickness on the electronic and magnetic properties of PdCl3 (palladium trichloride). Our results show that when spin-orbital coupling is included, PdCl3 exhibits the quantum anomalous Hall effect with a non-trivial band gap of 24 meV. With increasing number of layers, from monolayer to bulk, a transition occurs from a Dirac half-metal to a ferromagnetic metal. On application of a perpendicular electrical field to bilayer PdCl3, we find that the energy band gap decreases with increasing field. Uniaxial and biaxial strain, significantly modifies the electronic structure depending on the strain type and magnitude. Adsorption of adatom and topological defects have a dramatic effect on the electronic and magnetic properties of PdCl3. In particular, the structure can become a metal (Na), half-metal (Be, Ca, Al, Ti, V, Cr, Fe and Cu with, respective, 0.72, 9.71, 7.14, 6.90, 9.71, 4.33 and 9.5 μB magnetic moments), ferromagnetic-metal (Sc, Mn and Co with 4.55, 7.93 and 2.0 μB), spin-glass semiconductor (Mg, Ni with 3.30 and 8.63 μB), and dilute-magnetic semiconductor (Li, K and Zn with 9.0, 9.0 and 5.80 μB magnetic moment, respectively). Single Pd and double Pd + Cl vacancies in PdCl3 display dilute-magnetic semiconductor characteristics, while with a single Cl vacancy, the material becomes a half-metal. The calculated optical properties of PdCl3 suggest it could be a good candidate for microelectronic and optoelectronics devices.

Abstract: In this manuscript, we compare different analytical methodologies to validate or disprove the binding capabilities of aptamer sequences. This was prompted by the lack of a universally accepted and robust quality control protocol for the characterization of aptamer performances coupled with the observation of independent yet inconsistent data sets in the literature. As an example, we chose three aptamers with a reported affinity in the nanomolar range for ampicillin, a β-lactam antibiotic, used as biorecognition elements in several detection strategies described in the literature. Application of a well-known colorimetric assay based on aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) yielded conflicting results with respect to the original report. Therefore, ampicillin binding was evaluated in solution using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), native nano-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (native nESI-MS), and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). By coupling the thermodynamic data obtained with ITC with the structural information on the binding event given by native nESI-MS and 1H NMR we could verify that none of the ampicillin aptamers show any specific binding with their intended target. The effect of AuNPs on the binding event was studied by both ITC and 1H NMR, again without providing positive evidence of ampicillin binding. To validate the performance of our analytical approach, we investigated two well-characterized aptamers for cocaine/quinine (MN4), chosen for its nanomolar range affinity, and l-argininamide (1OLD) to show the versatility of our approach. The results clearly indicate the need for a multifaceted analytical approach, to unequivocally establish the actual detection potential and performance of aptamers aimed at small organic molecules.

Abstract: In the present study ultra-fine fly ash as a novel by-product obtained by a dry and closed separation process was investigated as cement replacement in concrete. The impact of ultra-fine fly ash on material properties was investigated following an upscaling as an approach considering paste, mortar and concrete properties. Two types of cement, Portland cement (CEMI) and slag cement (CEMIII), two types of ultra-fly ashes, one with particle size d90< 9.3lm (FA1) and second with d90< 4.6lm (FA2) were used.At paste- and mortar- level, cement was replaced at 0%, 15%, 25%, 35% and 50% with FA1 and FA2. At concrete- level, cement was replaced at 0%, 15% and 25% with different ratios of FA1 and FA2. The results at paste- and mortar- level showed that an increased fineness of the fly ash (FA2) contributes to better workability of the mix. For CEMI, the compressive strength of concrete with FA2 at 25% cement replacement was already equal to the reference 0% replacement concrete at the age of 28 days. For CEMIII, the compressive strength of concrete mix with FA1 with 15% and FA2 with 25% cement replacements reached the reference concrete value at the age of 91 days. Regarding the durability, replacing cement with ultra-fine fly ash (FA2) had a positive influence on the resistivity, chloride migration coefficient and alkali-silica reaction (ASR), and a negative influence on the carbonation resistance.

Abstract: In this work, the structural, electronic and optical properties of monolayer and bilayer of boron doped C3N are investigated by means of density functional theory-based first-principles calculations. Our results show that with increasing the B dopant concentration from 3.1% to 12.5% in the hexagonal pattern, an indirect-to-direct band gap (0.8 eV) transition occurs. Furthermore, we study the effect of electric field and strain on the B doped C3N bilayer (B-C3N@2L). It is shown that by increasing E-field strength from 0.1 to 0.6V/angstrom, the band gap displays almost a linear decreasing trend, while for the > 0.6V/angstrom, we find dual narrow band gap with of 50 meV (in parallel E-field) and 0.4 eV (in antiparallel E-field). Our results reveal that in-plane and out-of-plane strains can modulate the band gap and band edge positions of the B-C3N@2L. Overall, we predict that B-C3N@2L is a new platform for the study of novel physical properties in layered two-dimensional materials (2DM) which may provide new opportunities to realize high-speed low-dissipation devices. Abstract: First‐principles calculations, within the framework of density functional theory, are used to investigate the structural, electronic, optical, and thermoelectric properties of monolayer PbTe. The effect of layer thickness, electric field, strain, and vacancy defects on the electronic and magnetic properties is systematically studied. The results show that the bandgap decreases as the layer thickness increases from monolayer to bulk. With application of an electric field on bilayer PbTe, the bandgap decreases from 70 meV (0.2 V Å⁻¹) to 50 meV (1 V Å⁻¹) when including spin–orbit coupling (SOC). Application of uniaxial strain induces a direct‐to‐indirect bandgap transition for strain greater than +6%. In addition, the bandgap decreases under compressive biaxial strain (with SOC). The effect of vacancy defects on the electronic properties of PbTe is also investigated. Such vacancy defects turn PbTe into a ferromagnetic metal (single vacancy Pb) with a magnetic moment of 1.3 μB, and into an indirect semiconductor with bandgap of 1.2 eV (single Te vacancy) and 1.5 eV (double Pb + Te vacancy). In addition, with change of the Te vacancy concentration, a bandgap of 0.38 eV (5.55%), 0.43 eV (8.33%), and 0.46 eV (11.11%) is predicted.
