Abstract: The electron and hole spectrum in single and bilayer graphene is derived from known one-dimensional models, and the relation between the spectrum and symmetry of the lattice is shown.

Abstract: The ground states of a few electrons confined in two vertically coupled quantum rings in the presence of an external magnetic field are studied systematically within the current spin-density functional theory. Electron-electron interactions combined with inter-ring tunneling affect the electronic structure and the persistent current. For small values of the external magnetic field, we recover the zero magnetic field molecular quantum ring ground state configurations. Increasing the magnetic field many angular momentum, spin, and isospin transitions are predicted to occur in the ground state. We show that these transitions follow certain rules, which are governed by the parity of the number of electrons, the single-particle picture, Hunds rules, and many-body effects.

Abstract: Magnetic Pole Enhanced-Inductively Coupled Plasmas (MaPE-ICPs) in analogy to the conventional ICPs exhibit two modes of operation, depending on the power coupling mechanism, i.e., a low power mode with dominant capacitive coupling (E-mode) and a high power mode with dominant inductive coupling (H-mode). A comparative study of the electron temperature measured by a Langmuir probe (T-e(LP)) and the electron excitation temperature (T-exc(OES)) determined by Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) is reported in the two distinct modes of a MaPE-ICP operated in argon. The dependence of T-e(LP), T-exc(OES) and their ratio (T-e(LP)/T-exc(OES)) on applied power (5-50 W) and gas pressure (15-60 mTorr) is explored, and the validity of T-exc(OES) as an alternative diagnostic to T-e(LP) is tested in the two modes of MaPE-ICP. The OES based non-invasive measurement of the plasma parameters such as electron temperature is very useful for plasma processing applications in which probe measurements are limited. Abstract: A methodology for the quantitative compositional characterization of nickel silicides by high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) imaging is presented. HAADF-STEM images of a set of nickel silicide reference samples Ni3Si, Ni31Si12, Ni2Si, NiSi and NiSi2 are taken at identical experimental conditions. The correlation between sample thickness and HAADF-STEM intensity is discussed. In order to quantify the relationship between the experimental Z-contrast intensities and the composition of the analysed layers, the ratio of the HAADF-STEM intensity to the sample thickness or to the intensity of the silicon substrate is determined for each nickel silicide reference sample. Diffraction contrast is still detected on the HAADF-STEM images, even though the detector is set at the largest possible detection angle. The influence on the quantification results of intensity fluctuations caused by diffraction contrast and channelling is examined. The methodology is applied to FUSI gate devices and to horizontal TFET devices with different nickel silicides formed on source, gate and drain. It is shown that, if the elements which are present are known, this methodology allows a fast quantitative 2-dimensional compositional analysis.

Abstract: The excitonic properties of Si(core)/Ge(shell) and Ge(core)/Si(shell) nanocrystals (NC's) with diameters of similar to 1.9 nm are investigated using a combination density functional ab initio method to obtain the single particle wave functions and a configuration interaction method to compute the exciton fine structure and absorption coefficient. These core/shell structures exhibit type II confinement, which is more pronounced for the Si/Ge NC as a consequence of strain. The absorption coefficients of these NC's exhibit a single dominant peak, which has a much larger oscillator strength than the multipeaks found for pure Si and Ge NC's. The exciton lifetime in Si, Ge, and Ge/Si shows a small i:emperature dependence in the range 10-300 K, whereas in Si/Ge, the exciton lifetime decreases more than an order of magnitude in the same temperature range.

Abstract: The crystal structure of BiSr8-xCa3+xO22 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This phase is the same as Bi9Sr11Ca5Oy that was previously studied by several authors as a secondary phase in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system and coexists in thermodynamic equilibrium with the superconductors Bi2Sr2CuO6 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, with cell parameters a 11.037(3) Angstrom, b = 5.971(2) Angstrom, c = 19.703(7) Angstrom, beta = 101.46(3)degrees Z = 2. The structure was solved by direct methods and full-matrix least-squares refinement. It is built up by perovskite-related blocks of composition [Sr8-xBi2Ca3+xO16] that intergrow with double rows [Bi4O6] running along b. The perovskite blocks are formed by groups of five octahedra that are shifted from each other 3/2 root 2a(p) along [110](p) (a(p) being the parameter of the cubic perovskite subcell) in a zigzag configuration and are aligned with this direction parallel to the one forming an angle of 25" with the c axis. In turn, the perovskite blocks [Sr8-xBi2Ca3+xO16] are shifted from each other 1/2 of both a(p) and root 2a(p) along [100](p) and [110](p), respectively. In the double rows, two trivalent bismuth atoms are placed, forming dimeric anion complexes [Bi2O6].(6-).6- The oxygen atoms around bismuth in these dimers are placed in the vertexes of a distorted trigonal bipyramid, with one vacant position that would be occupied by the lone pairs characteristic for the electronic configuration of Bi(III). The B sites in the perovskite blocks are occupied by pentavalent bismuth atoms and calcium atoms; the remaining Sr and Ca ions occupy the A sites of the perovskite blocks with coordination numbers with oxygen ranging from 10 to 12. The mean valence for Bi is +3.67 [33.3% of Bi(V) and 66.7% of Bi(III)]. The oxygen vacancies are located in the boundaries between domains having the two possible configurations of the perovskite subcell as in the anionic superconductor Bi3BaO5.5. The oxidation of Bi6Sr8-xCa3+xO22 at 650 degrees C allows the complete filling of the oxygen vacancies to form the double perovskite (Sr2-xCax)Bi1.4Ca0.6O6 that shows 92.5% of bismuth in +5 oxidation state. The experimental high-resolution electon microscopy image and the electron diffraction pattern of powder samples along the [010]* zone axis are in good agreement with those calculated from the structural model obtained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The material is almost free of defects and the occurrence of planar defects is very exceptional.

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a polygonal cross-section have been paid increasing attention since their three-dimensional structure is related to specific physical properties, which are found to be different in comparison to CNTs with a circular cross-section. Here, we report the existence of novel multi-walled CNTs yielding walls with a rounded-hexagonal configuration. This structure was directly confirmed for the first time by both cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography. The morphology of the Fe catalytic particle also exhibits hexagonal characteristics, and is proposed as the origin of the formation of the rounded-hexagonal walls of the CNT. This observation is of great importance with respect to the design of polygonal (such as pentagonal or hexagonal) cross-sectional CNTs. By controlling the morphology of the catalytic nanoparticles it will be possible to grow CNTs with desired electronic and mechanical properties.

Abstract: We investigate the influence of an external perpendicular magnetic field on the lowest-energy states of an electron bound to a donor which is located near a semiconductor-metal interface. The problem is treated within the effective mass approach and the lowest-energy states are obtained through (1) the “numerically exact” finite element method, and (2) a variational approach using a trial wave function where all image charges that emerge due to the presence of the metallic gate are taken into account. The trial wave functions are constructed such that they reduce to an exponential behavior for sufficiently small magnetic fields and become Gaussian for intermediate and large magnetic fields. The average electron-donor distance can be controlled by the external magnetic field. We find that the size of the 2p(z) state depends strongly on the magnetic field when the donor is close to the interface, showing a nonmonotonic behavior, in contrast with the ground and the other excited states. Abstract: A numerical model for NxOy remediation in humid air plasma produced with a dielectric barrier discharge at atmospheric pressure is presented. Special emphasis is given to NO2 and N2O reduction with the decrease of O2 content in the feedstock gas. A detailed reaction mechanism including electronic and ionic processes, as well as the contribution of radicals and excited atomic/molecular species is proposed. The temporal evolution of the densities of NO, NO2 and N2O species, and some other by-products, is analyzed, and the major pathways for the NxOy remediation are discussed for one pulse. Subsequently, simulations are presented for a multi-pulses case, where three O2 contents are tested for optimization of the remediation process. It is found that when the gas mixture O2/N2/H2O/NOx has no initial O2 content, the best NOx and N2O remediation is achieved.

Abstract: We model the fluorescence spectra of planar spin oscillators to find conditions that maximize spin resonance fluorescence. Spin oscillators perform Rabi oscillations under the effect of a periodic effective magnetic field caused by the winding motion of an electron in a gradient of magnetic field. We show that, despite the weak coupling of the spin magnetic dipole to the vacuum, spin oscillators excited by a direct current output a few nanowatts of microwave power, which is comparable to the best microwave sources. The large quantum efficiency relies on the combination of two effects. On the one hand, the spontaneous emission rate is enhanced by the synchronization of spin oscillators, which interact through the microwave field that they emit. On the other hand, the huge Rabi frequencies experienced by spin oscillators promote spins into upper levels of Zeeman transitions, from which a radiative cascade is triggered. We demonstrate different regimes of fluorescence which correspond to different values of the Rabi period relative to the spontaneous decay time and to the oscillator dwell time in the gradient of magnetic field. We investigate the device parameters which make these regimes experimentally accessible and find conditions that optimize microwave output. We find that microwave emission is centered around the cutoff frequency of spin oscillators. This has the advantage that the peak emission frequency may be tuned from zero continuously up to a few hundred gigahertz using an electrostatic gate. Quite remarkably for a spintronics effect, electrically induced spin resonance fluorescence does not require the injection of a spin polarized current. In fact, we show that microwave spectra are mostly independent of the incoming spin polarization except for magnetic waveguides which are shorter than a certain critical length, which we will specify.

Abstract: Ultrafine ZnO nanocrystals with a thickness down to 0.25 nm are grown by a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition method. Electronic band structures and native point defects of ZnO nanocrystals are studied by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first-principles density functional theory calculations. Below a critical thickness of nm ZnO adopts a graphitic-like structure and exhibits a wide band gap similar to its wurtzite counterpart. The hexagonal wurtzite structure, with a well-developed band gap evident from scanning tunneling spectroscopy, is established for a thickness starting from similar to 1.4 nm. With further increase of the thickness to 2 nm, V-O-V-Zn defect pairs are easily produced in ZnO nanocrystals due to the self-compensation effect in highly doped semiconductors.
