“Inner and outer ring states of MoS2 quantum rings : energy spectrum, charge and spin currents”. Chen Q, Li LL, Peeters FM, Journal of applied physics 125, 244303 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.5094200
Abstract: We investigate the energy levels and persistent currents of MoS2 quantum rings having different shapes and edge types in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field by means of the tight-binding approach. We find states localized at the inner and outer boundaries of the ring. These energy levels exhibit different magnetic field dependences for the inner and outer ring states due to their different localization properties. They both exhibit the usual Aharanov-Bohm oscillations but with different oscillation periods. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling, we show distinct spin and charge persistent currents for inner and outer ring states. We find well-defined spin currents with negligibly small charge currents. This is because the local currents of spin-up and -down states flow in opposite directions.

“Fano resonances in bilayer phosphorene nanoring”. Zhang R, Wu Z, Li XJ, Li LL, Chen Q, Li Y-M, Peeters FM, Nanotechnology 29, 215202 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1088/1361-6528/AAB534
Abstract: Tunable transport properties and Fano resonances are predicted in a circular bilayer phosphorene nanoring. The conductance exhibits Fano resonances with varying incident energy and applied perpendicular magnetic field. These Fano resonance peaks can be accurately fitted with the well known Fano curves. When a magnetic field is applied to the nanoring, the conductance oscillates periodically with magnetic field which is reminiscent of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Fano resonances are tightly related to the discrete states in the central nanoring, some of which are tunable by the magnetic field.

Abstract: Landau levels (LLs) are modified by the Frohlich interaction which we investigate within the improved Wigner-Brillouin theory for energies both below and above the longitudinal-optical-continuum in monolayer MoS2.., WS2, MoSe2, and WSe2. Polaron corrections to the LLs are enhanced in monolayer MoS2 as compared to WS2. A series of levels are found at h omega(LO) + lh omega(c), and in addition, the Frohlich interaction lifts the degeneracy between the levels nh omega(c) and h omega(LO) + lh omega(c) resulting in an anticrossing. The screening effect due to the environment plays an important role in the polaron energy corrections, which are also affected by the effective thickness r(eff) parameter. The polaron anticrossing energy gap E-gap decreases with increasing effective thickness r(eff). Published by AIP Publishing.

“Plasma-catalytic dry reforming of CH4: Effects of plasma-generated species on the surface chemistry”. Sun J, Chen Q, Qin W, Wu H, Liu B, Li S, Bogaerts A, Chemical Engineering Journal 498, 155847 (2024). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.cej.2024.155847
Abstract: By means of steady-state experiments and a global model, we studied the effects of plasma-generated reactive species on the surface chemistry and coking in plasma-catalytic CH4/CO2 reforming at reduced pressure (8–40 kPa). We used a hybrid ZDPlasKin-CHEMKIN model to predict the species densities over time. The detailed plasma-catalytic mechanism consists of the plasma discharge scheme, a gas-phase chemistry set and a surface mechanism. Our experimental results show that the coupling of Ni/SiO2 catalyst with plasma is more effective in CH4/CO2 activation and conversion than unpacked DBD plasma, with syngas being the main products. The
highest total conversion of 16 % was achieved at 8000 V and 473 K, with corresponding CO and H2 yields of 15 % and 12 %, respectively. The reactants conversion and product selectivity are well captured by the kinetic model. Our simulation results suggest that vibrational species and radicals can accelerate the dissociative adsorption and Eley-Rideal (E-R) reactions. Path flux analysis shows that E-R reactions dominate the surface reaction pathways, which differs from thermal catalysis, indicating that the coupling of non-equilibrium plasma and catalysis can effectively shift the formation and consumption pathways of important adsorbates. For instance, our model suggests that HCOO(s) is primarily generated through the E-R reaction CO2(v) + H(s) → HCOO(s), while the hydrogenation reaction HCOO(s) + H → HCOOH(s) is the main source of HCOOH(s). Carbon deposition on the
catalyst surface is primarily formed through the stepwise dehydrogenation of CH4, while the E-R reactions enhanced by plasma-generated H and O atoms dominate the consumption of carbon deposition. This work provides new insights into the effects of reactive species on the surface chemistry in plasma-catalytic CH4/CO2 reforming.

Abstract: We report a study of scattering dynamics in crystals employing momentum-resolved scanning transmission
electron microscopy under varying illumination conditions. As we perform successive changes of the probe
focus, multiple real-space signals are obtained in dependence of the shape of the incident electron wave.
With support from extensive simulations, each signal is shown to be characterised by an optimum focus for
which the contrast is maximum and which differs among different signals. For instance, a systematic focus
mismatch is found between images formed by high-angle scattering, being sensitive to thickness and chemical
composition, and the first moment in diffraction space, being sensitive to electric fields. It follows that a single
recording at one specific probe focus is usually insufficient to characterise materials comprehensively. Most
importantly, we demonstrate in experiment and simulation that the second moment (

Abstract: In computed tomography, the reconstruction is typically obtained on a voxel grid. In this work, however, we propose a mesh-based reconstruction method. For tomographic problems, 3D meshes have mostly been studied to simulate data acquisition, but not for reconstruction, for which a 3D mesh means the inverse process of estimating shapes from projections. In this paper, we propose a differentiable forward model for 3D meshes that bridge the gap between the forward model for 3D surfaces and optimization. We view the forward projection as a rendering process, and make it differentiable by extending recent work in differentiable rendering. We use the proposed forward model to reconstruct 3D shapes directly from projections. Experimental results for single-object problems show that the proposed method outperforms traditional voxel-based methods on noisy simulated data. We also apply the proposed method on electron tomography images of nanoparticles to demonstrate the applicability of the method on real data.

Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising candidates for atomic-scale piezotronics and piezophototronics. Quantum edge states show fascinating fundamental physics such as nontrivial topological behavior and hold promising practical applications for low-power electronic devices. Here, using the tight-binding approach and quantum transport simulations, we investigate the piezotronic effect on the spin polarization of edge states in a zigzag-terminated monolayer MoS2 nanoribbon. We find that the strain-induced piezoelectric potential induces a phase transition of edge states from metal to semiconductor. However, in the presence of exchange field, edge states become semi-metallic with significant spin splitting and polarization that can be tuned by external strain. We show that quantum transport conductance exhibits a 100% spin polarization over a wide range of strain magnitudes. This effect is used in a propose prototype of piezotronic spin transistor. Our results provide a fundamental understanding of the piezotronic effect on edge states in zigzag monolayer MoS2 nanoribbons and are relevant for designing high-performance piezotronic spin devices.

“Topological phase transitions and Majorana zero modes in DNA double helix coupled to s-wave superconductors”. Chen Q, Guo A-M, Liu J, Peeters FM, Sun Q-F, New Journal Of Physics 23, 093047 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1088/1367-2630/AC2711
Abstract: Topological properties of a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) proximity-coupled by an s-wave superconductor are investigated, in which the energy spectra and the differential conductance are calculated within the framework of tight-binding approximation. Our results indicate that this dsDNA-superconductor system hosts Majorana zero modes (MZMs) when the Zeeman field is perpendicular to the helix axis, whereas no MZM could be observed when the Zeeman field is parallel to the helix axis, in sharp contrast to previous studies on nanowires including single-stranded DNA. In particular, two topological phase transitions could take place in the dsDNA-superconductor system by changing the Zeeman field, one from a topological trivial phase to a topological nontrivial phase with one pair of MZMs in small Zeeman field regime, and the other from a phase with one pair of MZMs to a phase with two pairs of MZMs by further increasing the Zeeman field. In the presence of a gate field normal to the helix axis, the topological nontrivial phase with two pairs of MZMs can transform into the phase with one pair of MZMs. The topological phase with one pair of MZMs is more stable and robust against Anderson disorder.

“Magnetic field dependence of electronic properties of MoS2 quantum dots with different edges”. Chen Q, Li LL, Peeters FM, Physical review B 97, 085437 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVB.97.085437
Abstract: Using the tight-binding approach, we investigate the energy spectrum of square, triangular, and hexagonal MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Novel edge states emerge in MoS2 QDs, which are distributed over the whole edge which we call ring states. The ring states are robust in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The corresponding energy levels of the ring states oscillate as a function of the perpendicular magnetic field which are related to Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. Oscillations in the magnetic field dependence of the energy levels and the peaks in the magneto-optical spectrum emerge (disappear) as the ring states are formed (collapsed). The period and the amplitude of the oscillation decrease with the size of the MoS2 QDs.

“Electronic properties of 2H-stacking bilayer MoS₂, measured by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy”. Cheng X, Xu W, Wen H, Zhang J, Zhang H, Li H, Peeters FM, Chen Q, Frontiers of physics 18, 53303 (2023). http://doi.org/10.1007/S11467-023-1295-1
Abstract: Bilayer (BL) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is one of the most important electronic structures not only in valleytronics but also in realizing twistronic systems on the basis of the topological mosaics in moire superlattices. In this work, BL MoS2 on sapphire substrate with 2H-stacking structure is fabricated. We apply the terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) for examining the basic optoelectronic properties of this kind of BL MoS2. The optical conductivity of BL MoS2 is obtained in temperature regime from 80 K to 280 K. Through fitting the experimental data with the theoretical formula, the key sample parameters of BL MoS2 can be determined, such as the electron density, the electronic relaxation time and the electronic localization factor. The temperature dependence of these parameters is examined and analyzed. We find that, similar to monolayer (ML) MoS2, BL MoS2 with 2H-stacking can respond strongly to THz radiation field and show semiconductor-like optoelectronic features. The theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) can help us to further understand why the THz optoelectronic properties of BL MoS2 differ from those observed for ML MoS2. The results obtained from this study indicate that the THz TDS can be applied suitably to study the optoelectronic properties of BL MoS2 based twistronic systems for novel applications as optical and optoelectronic materials and devices.

“Field-free superconducting diode in a magnetically nanostructured superconductor”. Jiang J, Milošević, MV, Wang Y-L, Xiao Z-L, Peeters FM, Chen Q-H, Physical review applied 18, 034064 (2022). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVAPPLIED.18.034064
Abstract: A strong superconducting diode effect (SDE) is revealed in a thin superconducting film periodically nanostructured with magnetic dots. The SDE is caused by the current-activated dissipation mitigated by vortex-antivortex pairs (VAPs), which periodically nucleate under the dots, move and annihilate in the superconductor-eventually driving the system to the high-resistive state. Inversing the polarity of the applied current destimulates the nucleation of VAPs, the system remains superconducting up to far larger currents, leading to the pronounced diodic response. Our dissipative Ginzburg-Landau simulations detail the involved processes, and provide reliable geometric and parametric ranges for the experimental realiza-tion of such a nonvolatile superconducting diode, which operates in the absence of any applied magnetic field while being fluxonic by design.

Abstract: We report a plasma‐assisted CO2hydrogenation to CH3OH over Fe2O3/γ‐Al2O3catalysts, achieving 12% CO2conversion and 58% CH3OH selectivity at a temperature of nearly 80°C atm pressure. “Plasma-Assisted Dry Reforming of CH4: How Small Amounts of O2Addition Can Drastically Enhance the Oxygenate Production─Experiments and Insights from Plasma Chemical Kinetics Modeling”. Abstract: Plasma-based dry reforming of methane (DRM) into
high-value-added oxygenates is an appealing approach to enable
otherwise thermodynamically unfavorable chemical reactions at
ambient pressure and near room temperature. However, it suffers
from coke deposition due to the deep decomposition of CH4. In this
work, we assess the DRM performance upon O2 addition, as well as
varying temperature, CO2/CH4 ratio, discharge power, and gas
residence time, for optimizing oxygenate production. By adding O2,
the main products can be shifted from syngas (CO + H2) toward
oxygenates. Chemical kinetics modeling shows that the improved
oxygenate production is due to the increased concentration of
oxygen-containing radicals, e.g., O, OH, and HO2, formed by electron
impact dissociation [e + O2 → e + O + O/O(1D)] and subsequent
reactions with H atoms. Our study reveals the crucial role of oxygen-coupling in DRM aimed at oxygenates, providing practical
solutions to suppress carbon deposition and at the same time enhance the oxygenates production in plasma-assisted DRM.

“Reversible ratchet effects in a narrow superconducting ring”. Jiang J, Wang Y-L, Milošević, MV, Xiao Z-L, Peeters FM, Chen Q-H, Physical Review B 103, 014502 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVB.103.014502
Abstract: We study the ratchet effect in a narrow pinning-free superconductive ring based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations. Voltage responses to external dc and ac currents at various magnetic fields are studied. Due to asymmetric barriers for flux penetration and flux exit in the ring-shaped superconductor, the critical current above which the flux-flow state is reached, as well as the critical current for the transition to the normal state, are different for the two directions of applied current. These effects cooperatively cause ratchet signal reversal at high magnetic fields, which has not been reported to date in a pinning-free system. The ratchet signal found here is larger than those induced by asymmetric pinning potentials. Our results also demonstrate the feasibility of using mesoscopic superconductors to employ a superconducting diode effect in versatile superconducting devices.

Abstract: Understanding the thermal stability of bimetallic nanoparticles is of vital importance to preserve their functionalities during their use in a variety of applications. In contrast to well-studied bimetallic systems such as Au@Ag, heat-induced morphological and compositional changes in Au@Pt nanoparticles are insufficiently understood, even though Au@Pt is an important material for catalysis. To investigate the thermal instability of Au@Pt nanorods at temperatures below their bulk melting point, we combined in situ heating with two- and three-dimensional electron microscopy techniques, including three-dimensional energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The experimental results were used as input for molecular dynamics simulations, to unravel the mechanisms behind the morphological transformation of Au@Pt core–shell nanorods. We conclude that thermal stability is influenced not only by the degree of coverage of Pt on Au but also by structural details of the Pt shell.

“Superconducting diode effect via conformal-mapped nanoholes”. Lyu Y-Y, Jiang J, Wang Y-L, Xiao Z-L, Dong S, Chen Q-H, Milošević, MV, Wang H, Divan R, Pearson JE, Wu P, Peeters FM, Kwok W-K, Nature Communications 12, 2703 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1038/S41467-021-23077-0
Abstract: A superconducting diode is an electronic device that conducts supercurrent and exhibits zero resistance primarily for one direction of applied current. Such a dissipationless diode is a desirable unit for constructing electronic circuits with ultralow power consumption. However, realizing a superconducting diode is fundamentally and technologically challenging, as it usually requires a material structure without a centre of inversion, which is scarce among superconducting materials. Here, we demonstrate a superconducting diode achieved in a conventional superconducting film patterned with a conformal array of nanoscale holes, which breaks the spatial inversion symmetry. We showcase the superconducting diode effect through switchable and reversible rectification signals, which can be three orders of magnitude larger than that from a flux-quantum diode. The introduction of conformal potential landscapes for creating a superconducting diode is thereby proven as a convenient, tunable, yet vastly advantageous tool for superconducting electronics. This could be readily applicable to any superconducting materials, including cuprates and iron-based superconductors that have higher transition temperatures and are desirable in device applications. A superconducting diode is dissipationless and desirable for electronic circuits with ultralow power consumption, yet it remains challenging to realize it. Here, the authors achieve a superconducting diode in a conventional superconducting film patterned with a conformal array of nanoscale holes.

Abstract: Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have recently attracted broad scientific interests due to their unique structural feature, the single-atom dispersion. Optimized electronic structure as well as high stability are required for single-atom catalysts to enable efficient electrochemical production of H2O2. Herein, we report a facile synthesis method that stabilizes atomic Pd species on the reduced graphene oxide/Ndoped carbon hollow carbon nanospheres (Pd1/N-C). Pd1/N-C exhibited remarkable electrochemical H2O2 production rate with high faradaic efficiency, reaching 80%. The single-atom structure and its high H2O2 production rate were maintained even after 10,000 cycle stability test. The existence of single-atom Pd as well as its coordination with N species is responsible for its high activity, selectivity, and stability. The N coordination number and substrate doping around Pd atoms are found to be critical for an optimized adsorption energy of intermediate *OOH, resulting in efficient electrochemical H2O2 production. Abstract: Sample holders for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) based on micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) have recently become popular for investigating the behavior of nanomaterials under in situ or environmental conditions. The accuracy and reproducibility of these in situ holders are essential to ensure the reliability of experimental results. In addition, the uniformity of an applied temperature trigger across the MEMS chip is a crucial parameter. In this work, it is measured the temperature homogeneity of MEMS-based heating sample supports by locally analyzing the dynamics of heat-induced alloying of Au@Ag nanoparticles located in different regions of the support through quantitative fast high-angle annular dark-field scanning TEM tomography. These results demonstrate the superior temperature homogeneity of a microheater design based on a heating element shaped as a circular spiral with a width decreasing outwards compared to a double spiral-shaped designed microheater. The proposed approach to measure the local temperature homogeneity based on the thermal properties of bimetallic nanoparticles will support the future development of MEMS-based heating supports with improved thermal properties and in situ studies where high precision in the temperature at a certain position is required. This schematic delineates an approach to quantifying potential localized temperature deviation within a nanochip. Employing two comparable nanoparticles as thermal probes in discrete nanochip regions, the alloying kinetics of these nanoparticles are monitorable using in situ quantitative high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) tomography, thus enabling the precise estimation of local temperature deviations.image
