Abstract | Various low temperature treatments of Ni50.6Ti49.4 have shown an unexpected effect on the martensitic start temperature. Periodic diffuse intensity distributions in reciprocal space indicate the formation of short pure Ni strings along the <111> directions in the B2 ordered lattice, precursing the formation of Ni4Ti3 precipitates formed at higher annealing temperatures.

Abstract | Nanoindentation tests performed on nanocrystalline palladium films subjected to hydriding/dehydriding cycles demonstrate a significant softening when compared to the as-received material. The origin of this softening is unraveled by combining in situ TEM nanomechanical testing with automated crystal orientation mapping in TEM and high resolution TEM. The softening is attributed to the presence of a high density of stacking faults and of Shockley partial dislocations after hydrogen loading. The hydrogen induced defects affect the elementary plasticity mechanisms and the mechanical response by acting as preferential sites for twinning/detwinning during deformation. These results are analyzed and compared to previous experimental and simulation works in the literature. This study provides new insights into the effect of hydrogen on the atomistic deformation and cracking mechanisms as well as on the mechanical properties of nanocrystalline thin films and membranes.

Abstract | In the present work two different cold working and annealing schemes were utilized, and the asymmetric superelastic response of thermomechanically processed materials were then assessed through cyclic tensile and compressive modes of deformation. The values of transformation stress, transformation strain, and pseudoelastic strain were measured for each treated and solutionized specimens and the asymmetric response was compared. In the solution annealed state, the difference of these parameters at different deformation modes was negligible due to the weak texture of the material, while for thermomechanically treated ones, development of specific deformation and recrystallization texture components was identified to be one of the underlying reasons of intensified asymmetry. The evolved substructure during the thermomechanical processing also played a substantial role in determining the asymmetric response. The presence of fine grains and dense dislocation substructure could hinder the movement of the transformation front, thus limiting the range of transformation. In tensile mode, the transformation stress was lower, but higher transformation strain was achieved, which was discussed relying on the slip activity in specified oriented grains. The lower transformation strain in compression mode led to lower pseudoelastic strain due to the narrow transformation range which finally degraded superelastic response of the material. Abstract | The heterogeneous precipitation of the eta (MgZn2) phase on the E (Al18Mg3Cr2) dispersoids of the 7075 aluminum alloy was systematically investigated by atomic resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). It is found that coarse B particles are heterogeneously precipitated at the E particle interface after water quenching and isothermal aging at 120 degrees C. The incoherent E/Al interface is responsible for the high tendency of heterogeneous precipitation of the B phase. Two different orientation relationships (ORs) between the eta, E and Al matrix are identified: OR1 [2 (11) over bar0](eta)[011](E)//[(1) over bar 12](Al), (01 (1) over bar0)(eta)//(13 (3) over bar)(E)//(201)(Al), OR2 [(1) over bar 12](E)//[0001](eta)//[011](Al), (01 (1) over bar0 )(eta)//(220)(E)//(34 (4) over bar)(Al). The eta phase is preferential to nucleate along the {111}(E) or the {220}(E) planes, depending on its OR. The heterogeneous nucleation of B phase on the E particle could stabilize the E/Al interface by introducing a coherent E/eta interface, which increases the drive force of heterogeneous precipitation. The reorientation of eta phase and mutual diffusion of solute atoms could assist the coherency of the E/eta interface. The present results suggest that increasing the coherency of the E/Al interface is a promising method to suppress the heterogeneous precipitation of the eta phase. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Abstract | This study reports the properties of irradiation assisted stress corrosion crack tips extracted by means of focused-ion beam from 60 to 80 dpa neutron-irradiated O-ring specimens tested under straining conditions under a pressurized-water reactor environment. Various crack tip morphologies and surrounding deformation features were analyzed as a function of applied stress, surface oxidation state and loading form – constant versus cyclic. All investigated cracks exhibit grain boundary oxidation in front of the crack tip, with the extent of oxidation being proportional to applied stress. These findings clearly demonstrate that, under the subcritical crack propagation regime, the grain boundary oxide grows faster than the crack. On the other hand, crack tips appertaining to specimens with removed oxide layer at the outer surface show comparatively less oxidation at the crack tip, which could indicate towards crack initiation from regions that exemplify lower stress, such as the O-ring inner surface. Cyclic loading is found to have a more pronounced effect on the crack tip microstructure, demonstrating increased deformation twinning and -martensitic transformation, which signifies towards an increased susceptibility to intergranular failure. Still, the extent of crack tip grain boundary oxidation in this case agrees well with expected values for maximum stress applied during cyclic loading. All results are interpreted based on the probabilistic subcritical crack propagation mechanism and provide strong support to a stress-driven internal oxidation model.

Abstract | The microstructural features of intergranular irradiation-assisted stress corrosion crack tips from a redeemed neutron-irradiated flux thimble tube (60 dpa) have been investigated using focused-ion beam analysis and (scanning) transmission electron microscopy. The current work presents a close examination of the deformation field and oxide assembly associated with intergranular cracking, in addition to the analysis of radiation-induced segregation at leading grain boundaries. Evidence of stress induced martensitic transformation extending from the crack tips is presented. Intergranular crack arrest is demonstrated on the account of the external tensile stress orientation, and as a consequence of MnS inclusion particles segregating close to the fractured grain boundary. Exclusive observations of grain boundary oxidation prior to the cracking are presented, which is in full-agreement with the internal oxidation model.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract | It is generally believed that β00 precipitates, rather than β0 precipitates, are the major strengthening precipitates in aged Al–Mg–Si alloys. The reason for this difference is not well understood. To clarify this, two samples of the same Al–Mg–Si alloy but with different aging states were prepared. The under-aged sample only contains nanoprecipitates of the β00 type, while the peak-aged one contains nearly equal volumes of β00 and β0 precipitates. We have, for the first time, separated the strengthening effect of the contribution from βʺ and βʹ precipitates, respectively, by an indirect approach based on high-precision measurements of volume fractions, number densities, sizes, proportions of the precipitates, their lattice strains, the composition and grain size of the matrix. The β0 precipitates, which take 45.6% of the total precipitate volume in the peak-aged sample, contribute to the entire precipitation strengthening by only 31.6%. The main reason why they are less useful compared to β00 precipitates has been found to be associated with their smaller lattice strains relative to the matrix, which is 0.99% versus 2.10% (for β00 ). |

Abstract | Transmission electron microscopy and finite element-based dislocation simulations were combined to study the development of dislocation microstructures after cyclic deformation of single crystal and bicrystal Ni micropillars oriented for multi-slip. A direct correlation between large accumulation of plastic strain and the presence of dislocation cell walls in the single crystal micropillars was observed, while the presence of the grain boundary hampered the formation of wall-like structures in agreement with a smaller accumulated plastic strain. Automated crystallographic orientation and nanostrain mapping using transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of lattice heterogeneities associated to the cell walls including long range elastic strain fields. By combining the nanostrain mapping with an inverse modelling approach, information about dislocation density, line orientation and Burgers vector direction was derived, which is not accessible otherwise in such dense dislocation structures. Simulations showed that the image forces associated with the grain boundary in this specific bicrystal configuration have only a minor influence on dislocation behavior. Thus, the reduced occurrence of “mature” cell walls in the bicrystal can be attributed to the available volume, which is too small to accommodate cell structures.

Abstract | Ni thin films sputter-deposited at room temperature with varying Ar pressures were investigated with automated crystal orientation mapping in a transmission electron microscope to uncover the mechanisms controlling the internal stress build-up recorded in-situ during deposition. Large grains were found to induce behaviour similar to a stress-free nucleation layer. The measurements of grain size in most of the Ni thin films are in agreement with the island coalescence model. Low internal stress was observed at low Ar pressure and was explained by the presence of large grains. Relaxation of high internal stress was also noticed at the highest Ar pressure, which was attributed to a decrease of Σ3 twin boundary density due to a low deposition rate. The results provide insightful information to better understand the relationship between structural boundaries and the evolution of internal stress upon deposition of thin films.

Abstract | A single crystal of Cu74.08Al23.13Be2.79 undergoes a martensitic phase transition at 246 and 232 K under heating and cooling, respectively. The phase fronts between the austenite and martensite regions of the sample are weakly mobile with a power-law resonance under external stress fields. Surprisingly, the martensite phase is elastically much harder than the austenite phase showing that interfaces between various crystallographic variants are strongly pinned and cannot be moved by external stress while the phase boundary between the austenite and martensite regions in the sample remains mobile. This unusual behavior was studied by dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. The remnant strain, storage modulus, and internal friction were recorded simultaneously for different applied forces in DMA. With increasing forces, the remnant strain increases monotonously while the internal friction peak height shows a minimum at 300 mN. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the pinning is generated by dislocations which are inherited from the austenite phase.

Abstract | Intragranular amorphization shear lamellae are found in deformed olivine aggregates. The detailed trans-mission electron microscopy analysis of intragranular lamella arrested in the core of a grain provides novel information on the amorphization mechanism. The deformation field is complex and heteroge-neous, corresponding to a shear crack type instability involving mode I, II and III loading components. The formation and propagation of the amorphous lamella is accompanied by the formation of crystal defects ahead of the tip. These defects are geometrically necessary [001] dislocations, characteristics of high-stress deformation in olivine, and rotational nanodomains which are tentatively interpreted as disclinations. We show that these defects play an important role in dictating the path followed by the amorphous lamella. Stress-induced amorphization in olivine would thus result from a direct crystal-to -amorphous transformation associated with a shear instability and not from a mechanical destabilization due to the accumulation of high number of defects from an intense preliminary deformation. The pref-erential alignment of some lamellae along (010) is a proof of the lower ultimate mechanical strength of these planes.(c) 2022 The Authors. Abstract | The interaction between dislocations and nano-precipitates during deformation directly influences hardening response of precipitation-strengthening metals such as Al-Mg-Si alloys. However, how coherent and semi-coherent nano-precipitates accommodate external deformation applied to an Al alloy remains to be elucidated. In-situ tensile experiments in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) were conducted to study the dynamic process of dislocations cutting through coherent needle-like beta '' precipitates with diameters of 3 similar to 8 nm. Comprehensive investigations using in-situ, ex-situ TEM and atom probe tomography uncovered that beta '' precipitates were firstly sheared into small fragments, and then the rotation of the fragments, via sliding along precipitate/matrix interfaces, destroyed their initially coherent interface with the Al matrix. In contrast, semi-coherent beta' precipitates with sizes similar to beta '' were more difficult to be fragmented and accumulation of dislocations at the interface increased interface misfit between beta' and the Al matrix. Consequently, beta' precipitates could basically maintain their needle-like shape after the tensile deformation. This research gains new insights into the interaction between nano-precipitates and dislocations. (C) 2021 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract | A novel class of nanostructured Zr50Cu50 (%at.) metallic glass films with superior and tunable mechanical properties is produced by pulsed laser deposition. The process can be controlled to synthetize a wide range of film microstructures including dense fully amorphous, amorphous embedded with nanocrystals and amorphous nano-granular. A unique dense self-assembled nano-laminated atomic arrangement characterized by alternating Cu-rich and Zr/O-rich nanolayers with different local chemical enrichment and amorphous or amorphous-crystalline composite nanostructure has been discovered, while significant in-plane clustering is reported for films synthetized at high deposition pressures. This unique nanoarchitecture is at the basis of superior mechanical properties including large hardness and elastic modulus up to 10 and 140 GPa, respectively and outstanding total elongation to failure (>9%), leading to excellent strength/ductility balance, which can be tuned by playing with the film architecture. These results pave the way to the synthesis of novel class of engineered nanostructured metallic glass films with high structural performances attractive for a number of applications in microelectronics and coating industry. |

Abstract | Submicron-sized quasicrystalline particles were obtained in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy produced by traditional melting. These particles consist of an Al-Fe-Ni core and a Mg-Cu-Zn shell and were found to be stable and embedded randomly in the Al matrix. The diffraction patterns of these core-shell particles reveal a decagonal core and an icosahedral shell with, respectively, ten- and five-fold axes aligned. High resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy of the Mg-Cu-Zn shell confirms the five-fold symmetry atomic arrangement and the icosahedral structure. It can therefore be concluded that Fe and Ni impurities play an important role in mediating the formation of such an unusual ternary core-shell quasicrystalline particle. These findings provide some novel insights in the formation of quasicrystals in traditional industrial Al alloys.

Abstract | In this paper, we report atomic scale observations and formation mechanisms of a high-density of antiphase boundaries (APBs) within an ultra-fine-grained Fe4Al13 intermetallic layer at an Al/steel interface after a heat treatment at 596 degrees C. The results reveal that the APBs are formed by nucleation and the glide of partial dislocations with Burgers vector of b/3[010] (b = 12.47 angstrom). The intensive activation of APBs locally transforms the Fe4Al13 structure from the quasicrystal approximant structure to a quasicrystal. Very few stacking faults and nanotwins are observed indicating that the formation of planar defects is mainly driven by this transformation. This new insight on the formation of high density of APBs could possibly lead to an improvement in toughness by increasing the strength/ductility balance of this intermetallic.

Abstract | In this work, we report an anomalous phenomenon on superelastic cycling of NiTi shape memory alloys when deforming at the temperature close to the border of superelastic window. New unexpected effects are found-(i) critical stress for inducing martensite transformation during the second loading cycle is higher than that of the first cycle; ( ii ) the plateau stress of the second cycle decreases to the original level when the strain overcomes the limit of the first cycle; ( iii ) transition from good superelasticity in the first cycle to fully irreversible strain in the second. We propose that defects generated during the first superelastic cycle close to the border of superelastic window impede following stress-induced martensitic transformations, leading to the increase of critical stress beyond yield stress of the B2 matrix, and thus functional fatigue of NiTi alloys. Abstract | Ultrafine faulty C14-MgZn2 Laves phase precipitates containing quasicrystalline clusters and demonstrating the formation of binary quasicrystalline precipitates with Penrose-like random-tiling were observed in the over-aged FCC matrix of a commercial 7N01 Al-Zn-Mg alloy, using high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy. The evolution from C14-Laves phase to quasicrystalline clusters is illustrated, and five-fold symmetry can be found in both real and reciprocal spaces. Our findings reveal the possibility of quasicrystalline formation from Laves phase in a highly plastic metal matrix like Al and demonstrate the structural relationship between Laves phase and quasicrystals.

Abstract | This work addresses the early stages (<= 1000 h) of the dissolution corrosion behavior of 316L and DIN 1.4970 austenitic stainless steels in contact with oxygen-poor (C-O < 10(-8) mass%), static liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 500 degrees C for 600-1000 h. The objective of this study was to determine the relative early-stage resistance of the uncoated steels to dissolution corrosion and to assess the protectiveness of select candidate coatings (Cr2AlC, Al2O3, V2AlxCy). The simultaneous exposure of steels with intended differences in microstructure and thermomechanical state showed the effects of steel grain size, density of annealing/deformation twins, and secondary precipitates on the steel dissolution corrosion behavior. The findings of this study provide recommendations on steel manufacturing with the aim of using the steels to construct Gen-IV lead-cooled fast reactors.

Abstract | The three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in a porous Ni50.8Ti49.2 alloy has been re-constructed by “Slice-and-View” in a Focused Ion Beam/Scanning Electron Microscope (FIB/SEM). The 3D configuration of these precipitates forming a network structure in the B2 austenite matrix has been characterized via 3D visualization and quantitative analysis including volume fraction, skeleton, degree of anisotropy and local thickness. It is found that dense Ni4Ti3 precipitates occupy 54% of the volume in the B2 austenite matrix. Parallel Ni4Ti3 precipitates grow alongside the surface of a micro-pore, yielding an asymmetric structure, while nano voids do not seem to affect the growth of Ni4Ti3 precipitates. The small average local thickness of the precipitates around 60 nm allows their coherency with the matrix, and further induces the R-phase transformation in the matrix. On the other hand, the B2 matrix exhibits a winding and narrow structure with a skeleton of 18.20 mm and a thickness similar to the precipitates. This discontinuous matrix segmented by the Ni4Ti3 network and pores is responsible for the gradual transformation by stalling the martensite propagation.

Abstract | The microstructural characteristics of two polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) films with different electrical properties produced by low-pressure chemical vapour deposition on top of high resistivity silicon substrates were investigated by advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM), including high resolution aberration corrected TEM and automated crystallographic orientation mapping in TEM. The results reveal that the nature of the poly-Si film/Si substrate interface is the main factor controlling the electrical resistivity of the poly-Si films. The high resistivity and high electrical linearity of poly-Si films are strongly promoted by the Sigma 3 twin type character of the poly-Si/Si substrate interface, leading to the generation of a huge amount of extended defects including stacking faults, Sigma 3 twin boundaries as well as Sigma 9 grain boundaries at this interface. Furthermore, a high density of interfacial dislocations has been observed at numerous common and more exotic grain boundaries deviating from their standard crystallographic planes. In contrast, poly-Si film/Si substrate interfaces with random character do not favour the formation of such complex patterns of defects, leading to poor electrical resistivity of the poly-Si film. This finding opens windows for the development of high resistivity silicon substrates for Radio Frequency (RF) integrated circuits (ICs) applications.

Abstract | A detailed microstructural examination endeavoring to understand the interfacial phenomena yielding to cohesion in solid-state assembling processes was performed. This study focuses on the transition zone of a dissimilar titanium alloy joint obtained by Linear Friction Welding (LFW) the β-metastable Ti17 to the near-α Ti6242. The transition zone delimitating both alloys is characterized by a sharp microstructure change from acicular HCP (Hexagonal Close-Packed) α′ martensitic laths in the Ti6242 to equiaxed BCC β (Body-Centered Cubic) subgrains in the Ti17; these α′ plates were shown to precipitate within prior-β subgrains remarkably more rotated than the ones formed in the Ti17. Both α′ and β microstructures were found to be intermingled within transitional subgrains demarcating a limited gradient from one chemical composition to the other. These peculiar interfacial grains revealed that the cohesive mechanisms between the rubbing surfaces occurred in the single-phase β domain under severe strain and high-temperature conditions. During the hot deformation process, the mutual migration of the crystalline interfaces from one material to another assisted by a continuous dynamic recrystallization process was identified as the main adhesive mechanism at the junction zone. The latter led to successful cohesion between the rubbing surfaces. Once the reciprocating motion stopped, fast cooling caused both materials to experience either a βlean→α′ or βlean→βmetastable transformation in the interfacial zone depending on their local chemical composition. The limited process time and the subsequent hindered chemical homogenization at the transition zone led to retaining the so-called intermingled α’/βm subgrains constituting the border between both Ti-alloys. |

Abstract | In order to increase the production rate during selective laser melting (SLM), a high power laser with a large beam diameter is used to build fully dense Hastelloy X parts. Compared to SLM with a low power and small diameter beam, the productivity was increased from 6 mm3/s to 16 mm3/s, i.e. 2.6 times faster. Besides the productivity benefit, the influence of the use of a high power laser on the rapid solidification microstructure and concomitant material properties is highlighted. The current paper compares the microstructure and tensile properties of Hastelloy X built with low and high power lasers. The use of a high power laser results in wider and shallower melt pools inducing an enhanced morphological and crystallographic texture along the building direction (BD). In addition, the increased heat input results in coarser sub-grains or high density dislocation walls for samples processed with a high power laser. Additionally, the influence of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) as a post-processing technique was evaluated. After HIP, the tensile fracture strain increased as compared to the strain in the as-built state and helped in obtaining competitive mechanical properties as compared to conventionally processed Hastelloy X parts.

Abstract | The dataset together with the corresponding Python scripts and Jupyter notebooks presented in this article are supplementary data for the work presented in Samaee et al., 2019 [1]. The data itself consists of two parts: the simulation data that was used in [1] to analyze the effect of a particular grain boundary on curved dislocations and the precession electron diffraction (PED) strain maps together with post-processed data for analyzing details of the observed dislocation vein structures. Additionally, the complete stress tensor components, which are not shown in [1], have also been included. The data sets are accompanied by Python code explaining the file formats and showing how to post-process the data. (c) 2019 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Inc. Abstract | Shape memory alloys inherit their macroscopic properties from their mesoscale microstructure originated from the martensitic phase transformation. In a cubic to orthorhombic transition, a single variant of martensite can have a compatible (exact) interface with the austenite for some special lattice parameters in contrast to conventional austenite/twinned martensite interface with a transition layer. Experimentally, the phase compatibility results in a dramatic drop in thermal hysteresis and gives rise to very stable functional properties over cycling. Here, we investigate the microstructures observed in Ti50Ni50-xPdx alloys that undergo a cubic to orthorhombic martensitic transformation using a three-dimensional phase field approach. We will show that the simulation results are in very good agreement with transmission electron microscopy observations. However, the understanding of the drop in thermal hysteresis requires the coupling of phase transformation with plastic activity. We will discuss this point within the framework of thermoelasticity, which is a generic feature of the martensitic transformation. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Abstract | In-situ bright field transmission electron microscopy (TEM) nanomechanical tensile testing and in-situ automated crystallographic orientation mapping in TEM were combined to unravel the elementary mechanisms controlling the plasticity of ultrafine grained Aluminum freestanding thin films. The characterizations demonstrate that deformation proceeds with a transition from grain rotation to intragranular dislocation glide and starvation plasticity mechanism at about 1% deformation. The grain rotation is not affected by the character of the grain boundaries. No grain growth or twinning is detected. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Title | On the nucleation mechanism of {112} < 111 > mechanical twins in as-quenched beta metastable Ti-12 wt.% Mo alloy | Type | A1 Journal article

Abstract | Recently developed beta-metastable Ti grades take advantage of the simultaneous activation of TRIP and TWIP effects for enhancing their work hardening rate. However, the role of each plasticity mechanism on the macroscopic mechanical response is still unclear. In this work, the nucleation mechanism of the first activated plasticity mechanism, namely {112} < 111 > twinning, was investigated. Firstly, post-mortem TEM analysis showed that twins nucleate on pre-existing microstructural defects such as thermal jogs with the zonal dislocation mechanism. The precipitation of the omega phase on twin boundaries has been observed, as well as the emission of numerous dislocations from super-jogs present in these twin boundaries. It is also shown that {112} < 111 > twins act as effective dislocation sources for the subsequent plasticity mechanisms such as beta -> alpha '' martensitic transformation and {332} < 111 > twinning. Secondly, in situ TEM tensile testing of the investigated Ti grade highlighted the primary role of the initial defect configuration present in the microstructure. It is shown that twins cannot nucleate without the presence of specific defects allowing the triggering of the dislocation decomposition needed for the twinning mechanism highlighted in investigated bulk samples.
