Abstract | Packed bed plasma reactors (PBPRs) are gaining increasing interest for use in environmental applications, such as greenhouse gas conversion into value-added chemicals or renewable fuels and volatile pollutant removal (e.g. NOx, VOC, K), as they enhance the conversion and energy efficiency of the process compared to a non-packed reactor. However, the plasma behaviour in a PBPR is not well understood. In this paper we demonstrate, by means of a fluid model, that the discharge behaviour changes considerably when changing the size of the packing beads and their dielectric constant, while keeping the interelectrode spacing constant. At low dielectric constant, the plasma is spread out over the full discharge gap, showing significant density in the voids as well as in the connecting void channels. The electric current profile shows a strong peak during each half cycle. When the dielectric constant increases, the plasma becomes localised in the voids, with a current profile consisting of many smaller peaks during each half cycle. For large bead sizes, the shift from full gap discharge to localised discharges takes place at a higher dielectric constant than for smaller beads. Furthermore, smaller beads or beads with a lower dielectric constant require a higher breakdown voltage to cause plasma formation.

Abstract | The dynamics of the pinned vortex, antivortex and interstitial vortex have been studied in superconducting/magnetic hybrids consisting of arrays of Co/Pd multilayer nanodots embedded in Nb films. The magnetic nanodots show out-of-plane magnetization at the remanent state. This magnetic state allows for superconducting vortex lattices of different types in an applied homogeneous magnetic field. We experimentally and theoretically show three such lattices: (i) a lattice containing only antivortices; (ii) a vortex lattice entirely pinned on the dots; and (iii) a vortex lattice with pinned and interstitial vortices. Between the flux creep (low vortex velocity) and the free flux flow (high vortex velocity) regimes the interaction between the magnetic array and the vortex lattice governs the vortex dynamics, which in turn enables distinguishing experimentally the type of vortex lattice which governs the dissipation. We show that the vortex lattice with interstitial vortices has the highest onset velocity where the lattice becomes ordered, whereas the pinned vortex lattice has the smallest onset velocity. Further, for this system, we directly estimate that the external force needed to depin vortices is 60% larger than the one needed to depin antivortices; therefore we are able to decouple the antivortex-vortex motion.

Abstract | The ground-state properties of a paramagnetic Mott insulator at half-filling are investigated in the presence of an external electric field using the inhomogeneous Gutzwiller approximation for a single-band Hubbard model in a slab geometry. We find that the metal-insulator transition is shifted toward higher Hubbard repulsions by applying an electric field perpendicular to the slab. The main reason is the accumulation of charges near the surface. The spatial distribution of site-dependent quasiparticle weight shows that it is maximal in a few layers beneath the surface, while the central sites where the field is screened have a very low quasiparticle weight. Our results show that above a critical-field value, states near the surface will be metallic, while the bulk quasiparticle weight is extremely suppressed but never vanishing, even for large Hubbard repulsions above the bulk zero-field critical value. Below the critical-field value, our results hint toward an insulating state in which the electric field is totally screened and the slab is again at half-filling.

Abstract | Electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is used to investigate single layers of LaAlO3 grown on SrTiO3 having an n-type interface as well as multilayers of LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 in which both n- and p-type interfaces occur. Only minor changes in Ti valence at the n-type interface are observed. This finding seems to contradict earlier experiments for other SrTiO3/LaAlO3 systems where large deviations in Ti valency were assumed to be responsible for the conductivity of these interfaces. Ab initio calculations have been carried out in order to interpret our EELS results. Using the concept of Bader charges, it is demonstrated that the so-called polar discontinuity is mainly resolved by lattice distortions and to a far lesser extent by changes in valency for both single layer and multilayer geometries.

Abstract | We discuss positron-annihilation lifetimes for a set of illustrative bulk materials within the framework of the weighted-density approximation (WDA). The WDA can correctly describe electron-positron correlations in strongly inhomogeneous systems, such as surfaces, where the applicability of (semi-)local approximations is limited. We analyze the WDA in detail and show that the electrons which cannot screen external charges efficiently, such as the core electrons, cannot be treated accurately via the pair correlation of the homogeneous electron gas. We discuss how this problem can be addressed by reducing the screening in the homogeneous electron gas by adding terms depending on the gradient of the electron density. Further improvements are obtained when core electrons are treated within the LDA and the valence electron using the WDA. Finally, we discuss a semiempirical WDA-based approach in which a sum rule is imposed to reproduce the experimental lifetimes.

Abstract | Methane needle-plane discharge has practical application prospect and scientific research significance since methane conversion heavy oil hydrogenation is formed by coupling methane needle-plane discharge with heavy oil hydrogenation, which can achieve high-efficient heavy oil hydrogenation and increase the yields of high value-added light olefins. In this paper, a two-dimensional fluid model is built up for numerically simulating the methane needle-plane discharge plasma at atmospheric pressure. Spatial and axial distributions of electric intensity, electron temperature and particle densities are obtained. Reaction yields are summarized and crucial pathways to produce various kinds of charged and neutral particles are found out. Simulation results indicate that axial evolutions of CH3+ and CH4+ densities, electric intensity and electron temperature are similar and closely related. The CH5+ and C2H5+ densities first increase and then decrease along the axial direction. The CH3 and H densities have nearly identical spatial and axial distributions. Particle density distributions of CH2, C2H4 and C2H5 are obviously different in the area near the cathode but comparatively resemblant in the positive column region. The CH3+ and CH4+ are produced by electron impact ionizations between electrons and CH4. The CH5+ and C2H5+ are respectively generated by molecular impact dissociations between CH3+ and CH4 and between CH4+ and CH4. Electron impact decomposition between electrons and CH4 is a dominated reaction to produce CH3, CH2, CH and H. The reactions between CH2 and CH4 and between electrons and C2H4 are critical pathways to produce C2H4 and C2H2, respectively. In addition, the yields of electron impact decomposition reactions between electrons and CH4 and reactions between CH2 and CH4 account for 52.15% and 47.85% of total yields of H-2 respectively.

Abstract | High-performance rechargeable batteries are becoming very important for high-end technologies with their ever increasing application areas. Hence, improving the performance of such batteries has become the main bottleneck to transferring high-end technologies to end users. In this study, we propose an argon intercalation strategy to enhance battery performance via engineering the interlayer spacing of honeycomb structures such as graphite, a common electrode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we systematically investigated the LIB performance of graphite and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) when argon atoms were sent into between their layers by using first-principles density-functional-theory calculations. Our results showed enhanced lithium binding for graphite and h-BN structures when argon atoms were intercalated. The increased interlayer space doubles the gravimetric lithium capacity for graphite, while the volumetric capacity also increased by around 20% even though the volume was also increased. The ab initio molecular dynamics simulations indicate the thermal stability of such graphite structures against any structural transformation and Li release. The nudged-elastic-band calculations showed that the migration energy barriers were drastically lowered, which promises fast charging capability for batteries containing graphite electrodes. Although a similar level of battery promise was not achieved for h-BN material, its enhanced battery capabilities by argon intercalation also support that the argon intercalation strategy can be a viable route to enhance such honeycomb battery electrodes.

Abstract | Coupled shallow impurity states in a freestanding semiconductor nanowire and in a semiconductor nanowire surrounded by a metallic gate are studied within the effective-mass approximation. Bonding and antibonding states are found due to the coupling of the two impurities, and their energy converges with increasing distance di between the two impurities. The dependences of the binding energy on the wire radius R, the distance di between the two impurities, and the impurity radial position in the nanowire are examined.

Abstract | Neutral excitons in strained axially symmetric In(Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots with a ringlike shape are investigated. Similar to experimental self-assembled quantum rings, the analyzed quantum dots have volcano-like shapes. The continuum mechanical model is employed to determine the strain distribution, and the single-band envelope function approach is adopted to compute the electron states. The hole states are determined by the axially symmetric multiband Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian, and the exciton states are obtained from an exact diagonalization. We found that the presence of the inner layer covering the ring opening enhances the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations. The reason is that the hole becomes mainly localized in the inner part of the quantum dot due to strain, whereas the electron resides mainly inside the ring-shaped rim. Interestingly, larger AB oscillations are found in the analyzed quantum dot than in a fully opened quantum ring of the same width. Comparison with the unstrained ringlike quantum dot shows that the amplitude of the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are almost doubled in the presence of strain. The computed oscillations of the exciton energy levels are comparable in magnitude to the oscillations measured in recent experiments. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.085314

Abstract | In this paper we investigate the basic physics of charge carriers (electrons) leaking out of the inversion layer of a metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor with a biased gate. In particular, we treat the gate leakage current as resulting from two combined processes: (1) the time-dependent decay of electron wave packets representing the inversion-layer charge and (2) the local generation of new electrons replacing those that have leaked away. As a result, the gate current simply emerges as the ratio of the total charge in the inversion layer to the tunneling lifetime. The latter is extracted from the quantum dynamics of the decaying wave packets, while the generation rate is incorporated as a phenomenological source term in the continuity equation. Not only do the gate currents calculated with this model agree very well with experiment, the model also provides an onset to solve the paradox of the current-free bound states representing the resonances of the Schrödinger equation that governs the fully coupled metal-oxide-semiconductor system.

Abstract | We study Dirac plasmons and their damping in spatially separated N-layer graphene structures at finite doping and temperatures. The plasmon spectrum consists of one optical excitation with square-root dispersion and N – 1 acoustical excitations with linear dispersion, which are undamped at zero temperature and finite doping within a triangular energy region outside the electron-hole continuum. In the long-wavelength limit the energy and weight of the optical plasmon modes increase, respectively, as the square root and linearly with N in agreement with recent experimental findings. The energy and weight of the upper-lying acoustical branches also increase with N. This increase is strongest for the uppermost acoustical mode, and we find that its energy can exceed at some value of momentum the plasmon energy in an individual graphene sheet. Meanwhile, the energy of the low-lying acoustical branches decreases weakly with N as compared with the single acoustical mode in double-layer graphene structures. Our numerical calculations provide a detailed understanding of the overall behavior of the wave-vector dependence of the optical and acoustical multilayer plasmon modes and show how their dispersion and damping are modified as a function of temperature, interlayer spacing, and inlayer carrier density in (un)balanced graphene multilayer structures. Abstract | Using the tight-binding approach, we study the influence of a perpendicular magnetic field on the energy levels of hexagonal, triangular, and circular bilayer graphene (BLG) quantum dots (QDs) with zigzag and armchair edges. We obtain the energy levels for AB (Bernal)-stacked BLG QDs in both the absence and the presence of a perpendicular electric field (i.e., biased BLG QDs). We find different regions in the spectrum of biased QDs with respect to the crossing point between the lowest-electron and -hole Landau levels of a biased BLG sheet. Those different regions correspond to electron states that are localized at the center, edge, or corner of the BLG QD. Quantum Hall corner states are found to be absent in circular BLG QDs. The spatial symmetry of the carrier density distribution is related to the symmetry of the confinement potential, the position of zigzag edges, and the presence or absence of interlayer inversion symmetry.

Abstract | We study tunneling of quasiparticles through potential barriers in a graphene monolayer with the mass gap using a semiclassical (WKB) approach. The main equations are derived in away similar to the WKB theory for the Schrodinger equation, which allows for explicit solutions at all orders. The analog of the classical action is used to distinguish types of possible stationary states in the system. The analysis focuses on the resonant scattering and the hole states localized in the vicinity of a barrier that are often overlooked. The scattering coefficients for the physically interesting limits are obtained by matching the WKB approximation with the known solutions at turning points. The localized states demonstrate unconventional properties and lead to alterations of the single particle density of states.

Abstract | By making use of circularly polarized light and electrostatic gating, monolayer molybdenum disulfide (ML – MoS2) can form a platform supporting multiple types of charge carriers. They can be discriminated by their spin, valley index, or whether they are electrons or holes. We investigate the collective properties of those charge carriers and are able to identify distinct plasmon modes. We analyze the corresponding dispersion relation, lifetime, and oscillator strength, and calculate the phase relation between the oscillations in the different components of the plasmon modes. All platforms in ML-MoS2 support a long-wavelength root q plasmon branch at zero kelvins. In addition to this, for an n-component system, n-1 distinct plasmon modes appear as acoustic modes with linear dispersion in the long-wavelength limit. These modes correspond to out-of-phase oscillations in the different fermion liquids and have, although being damped, a relatively long lifetime. Additionally, we also find distinct modes at large wave vectors that are more strongly damped by intraband processes.

Abstract | The cyclotron resonance energies, the corresponding oscillator strengths, and the cyclotron absorption spectrum for trilayer graphene are calculated for both ABA and ABC stacking. A gate potential across the stacked layers leads to (1) a reduction of the transition energies, (2) a lifting of the degeneracy of the zero Landau level, and (3) the removal of the electron-hole symmetry.

Abstract | When slow ions incident on a surface are neutralized, the excess potential energy is passed on to an electron inside the surface, leading to emission of secondary electrons. The microscopic description of this process, as well as the calculation of the secondary electron yield, is a challenging problem due to its complexity as well as its sensitivity to surface properties. One of the first quantitative descriptions was articulated in the 1950s by Hagstrum, who based his calculation on a parametrization of the density of states of the material. In this paper, we present a model for calculating the secondary electron yield, derived from Hagstrum’s initial approach. We use first-principles density functional theory calculations to acquire the necessary input and introduce the concept of electron cascades to Hagstrum’s model in order to improve the calculated spectra, as well as remove its reliance on fitting parameters. We apply our model to He+ and Ne+ ions incident on Ge(111) and Si(111) and obtain yield spectra that match closely to the experimental results of Hagstrum. |

Abstract | Combining first-principles calculations with Landauer-Mittiker formalism, ballistic thermoelectric transport properties of semiconducting two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and oxides (TMOs) (namely MX2 with M = Cr, Mo, W, Ti, Zr, Hf; X = O, S, Se, Te) are investigated in their 2H and 1T phases. Having computed structural, as well as ballistic electronic and phononic transport properties for all structures, we report the thermoelectric properties of the semiconducting ones. We find that 2H phases of four of the studied structures have very promising thermoelectric properties, unlike their 1T phases. The maximum room temperature p-type thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of 1.57 is obtained for 2H-HfSe2, which can be as high as 3.30 at T = 800 K. Additionally, 2H-ZrSe2, 2H-ZrTe2, and 2H-HfS2 have considerable ZT values (both nand p-type), that are above 1 at room temperature. The 1T phases of Zr and Hf-based oxides possess relatively high power factors, however their high lattice thermal conductance values limit their ZT values to below 1 at room temperature.

Abstract | Using the tight-binding (TB) approximation with inclusion of the spin-orbit interaction, we predict a topological phase transition in the electronic band structure of phosphorene in the presence of axial strains. We derive a low-energy TB Hamiltonian that includes the spin-orbit interaction for bulk phosphorene. Applying a compressive biaxial in-plane strain and perpendicular tensile strain in ranges where the structure is still stable leads to a topological phase transition. We also examine the influence of strain on zigzag phosphorene nanoribbons (zPNRs) and the formation of the corresponding protected edge states when the system is in the topological phase. For zPNRs up to a width of 100 nm the energy gap is at least three orders of magnitude larger than the thermal energy at room temperature.

Title | Tuning the electronic properties of graphene-graphitic carbon nitride heterostructures and heterojunctions by using an electric field | Type | A1 Journal article

Abstract | Integration of graphene-based two-dimensional materials is essential for nanoelectronics applications. Using density-functional theory, we systematically investigate the electronic properties of vertically stacked graphene-graphitic carbon nitrides (GE/GCN). We also studied the covalently lateral stitched graphene-graphitic carbon nitrides (GE-GCN heterojunctions). The effects of perpendicular electric field on the electronic properties of six different heterostructures, i.e., (i) one layer of GE on top of a layer of CnNm with (n, m) = (3,1), (3,4), and (4,3) and (ii) three heterostructures CnNm/Cn'Nm', where (n, m) not equal (n', m') are elucidated. The most important calculated features are (i) the systems GE/C3N4, C3N/C3N4, GE-C3N, GE-C4N3, and C3N-C3N4 exhibit semiconducting characteristics having small band gaps of Delta(0)=20, 250, 100, 100, 80 meV, respectively while (ii) the systems GE/C4N3, C3N/C4N3, and C3N-C4N3 show ferromagnetic-metallic properties. In particular, we found that, in semiconducting heterostructures, the band gap increases nontrivially with increasing the absolute value of the applied perpendicular electric field. This work is useful for designing heterojunctions and heterostructures made of graphene and other two-dimensional materials such as those proposed in recent experiments [X. Liu and M. C. Hersam Sci. Adv. 5, 6444 (2019)].

Abstract | Recent experimental studies showed that formation of a two-dimensional crystal structure of nitrogenated holey graphene (NHG) is possible. Similar to graphene, NHGs have an atomically thin and strong crystal structure. Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the structural, phononic, and thermal properties of monolayer NHG crystal. Our charge analysis reveals that the charged holey sites of NHG provide a reactive ground for further functionalization by adatoms or molecules. We also found that similar to graphene, the NHG structure has quite high-frequency phonon modes and the presence of nitrogen atoms leads to the emergence of additional vibrational modes. Our phonon analysis reveals the presence of three characteristic Raman-active modes of NHG. Furthermore, the analysis of constant-volume heat capacity showed that the NHG structure has a linear temperature dependence in the low-temperature region. The strong lattice structure and unique thermal properties of the NHG crystal structure are desirable in nanoscale device applications.

Abstract | The adsorption characteristics of alkali, alkaline-earth, and transition metal adatoms on silicene, a graphene-like monolayer structure of silicon are analyzed by means of first-principles calculations. In contrast to graphene, interaction between the metal atoms and the silicene surface is quite strong due to its highly reactive buckled hexagonal structure. In addition to structural properties, we also calculate the electronic band dispersion, net magnetic moment, charge transfer, work function, and dipole moment of the metal adsorbed silicene sheets. Alkali metals, Li, Na, and K, adsorb to hollow sites without any lattice distortion. As a consequence of the significant charge transfer from alkalis to silicene, metalization of silicene takes place. Trends directly related to atomic size, adsorption height, work function, and dipole moment of the silicene/alkali adatom system are also revealed. We found that the adsorption of alkaline-earth metals on silicene is entirely different from their adsorption on graphene. The adsorption of Be, Mg, and Ca turns silicene into a narrow gap semiconductor. Adsorption characteristics of eight transition metals Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Mo, and W are also investigated. As a result of their partially occupied d orbital, transition metals show diverse structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Upon the adsorption of transition metals, depending on the adatom type and atomic radius, the system can exhibit metal, half-metal, and semiconducting behavior. For all metal adsorbates, the direction of the charge transfer is from adsorbate to silicene, because of its high surface reactivity. Our results indicate that the reactive crystal structure of silicene provides a rich playground for functionalization at nanoscale. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.085423

Abstract | We present a unified theory of the phonon dispersions and elastic properties of graphene, graphite, and graphene multilayer systems. Starting from a fifth-nearest-neighbor force-constant model derived from full in-plane phonon dispersions of graphite [Mohr et al., Phys. Rev. B 76, 035439 (2007)], we use Born's long-wave method to calculate the tension and bending coefficients of graphene. Extending the model by interplanar interactions, we study the phonon dispersions and the elastic constants of graphite, and the phonon spectra of graphene multilayers. We find that the inner displacement terms due to sublattice shifts between inequivalent C atoms are quantitatively important in determining the elastomechanical properties of graphene and of graphite. The overall agreement between theory and experiment is very satisfactory. We investigate the evolution from graphene to graphite by studying the increase in the rigid plane optical mode as a function of the number of layers N. At N=10 the graphite value B2g1127 cm−1 is attained within a few percent.

Abstract | We address the nature of the disordered state that results from the adsorption of adatoms in graphene. For adatoms that sit at the center of the honeycomb plaquette, as in the case of most transition metals, we show that the ones that form a zero-energy resonant state lead to Anderson localization in the vicinity of the Dirac point. Among those, we show that there is a symmetry class of adatoms where Anderson localization is suppressed, leading to an exotic metallic state with large and rare charge droplets, that localizes only at the Dirac point. We identify the experimental conditions for the observation of the Anderson transition for adatoms in graphene.

Abstract | Motivated by a recent experiment that reported the successful synthesis of hexagonal (h) AlN [Tsipas et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 103, 251605 (2013)], we investigate structural, electronic, and vibrational properties of bulk, bilayer, and monolayer structures of h-AlN by using first-principles calculations. We show that the hexagonal phase of the bulk h-AlN is a stable direct-band-gap semiconductor. The calculated phonon spectrum displays a rigid-layer shear mode at 274 cm(-1) and an E-g mode at 703 cm(-1), which are observable by Raman measurements. In addition, single-layer h-AlN is an indirect-band-gap semiconductor with a nonmagnetic ground state. For the bilayer structure, AA'-type stacking is found to be the most favorable one, and interlayer interaction is strong. While N-layered h-AlN is an indirect-band-gap semiconductor for N = 1 – 9, we predict that thicker structures (N >= 10) have a direct band gap at the Gamma point. The number-of-layer-dependent band-gap transitions in h-AlN is interesting in that it is significantly different from the indirect-to-direct crossover obtained in the transition-metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract | Thermal expansion behavior of two-dimensional (2D) nitrides and graphene were studied by ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations as well as quasiharmonic approximation (QHA). Anharmonicity of the acoustic phonon modes are related to the unusual negative thermal expansion (NTE) behavior of the nitrides. Our results also hint that direct ab initio MD simulations are a more elaborate method to investigate thermal expansion behavior of 2D materials than the QHA. Nevertheless, giant NTE coefficients are found for h-GaN and h-AlN within the covered temperature range 100-600 K regardless of the chosen computational method. This unusual NTE of 2D nitrides is reasoned with the out-of-plane oscillations related to the rippling behavior of the monolayers.

Abstract | Using first-principles calculations, we study the dependence of the electronic and vibrational properties of multilayered PbI2 crystals on the number of layers and focus on the electronic-band structure and the Raman spectrum. Electronic-band structure calculations reveal that the direct or indirect semiconducting behavior of PbI2 is strongly influenced by the number of layers. We find that at 3L thickness there is a direct-to-indirect band gap transition (from bulk-to-monolayer). It is shown that in the Raman spectrum two prominent peaks, A(1g) and E-g, exhibit phonon hardening with an increasing number of layers due to the interlayer van der Waals interaction. Moreover, the Raman activity of the A(1g) mode significantly increases with an increasing number of layers due to the enhanced out-of-plane dielectric constant in the few-layer case. We further characterize rigid-layer vibrations of low-frequency interlayer shear (C) and breathing (LB) modes in few-layer PbI2. A reduced monatomic (linear) chain model (LCM) provides a fairly accurate picture of the number of layers dependence of the low-frequency modes and it is shown also to be a powerful tool to study the interlayer coupling strength in layered PbI2.

Abstract | Atomistic simulations are used to study the bending of rectangular graphene nanoribbons subjected to axial stress both for free boundary and supported boundary conditions. The shapes of the deformations of the buckled graphene nanoribbons, for small values of the stress, are sine waves where the number of nodal lines depend on the longitudinal size of the system and the applied boundary condition. The buckling strain for the supported boundary condition is found to be independent of the longitudinal size and estimated to be 0.86%. From a calculation of the free energy at finite temperature we find that the equilibrium projected two-dimensional area of the graphene nanoribbon is less than the area of a flat sheet. At the optimum length the boundary strain for the supported boundary condition is 0.48%.

Abstract | Themean-field Hubbard model is used to investigate the formation of the antiferromagnetic phase in hexagonal graphene rings with inner zigzag edges. The outer edge of the ring was taken to be either zigzag or armchair, and we found that both types of structures can have a larger antiferromagnetic interaction as compared with hexagonal dots. This difference could be partially ascribed to the larger number of zigzag edges per unit area in rings than in dots. Furthermore, edge states localized on the inner ring edge are found to hybridize differently than the edge states of dots, which results in important differences in the magnetism of graphene rings and dots. The largest staggered magnetization is found when the outer edge has a zigzag shape. However, narrow rings with armchair outer edge are found to have larger staggered magnetization than zigzag hexagons. The edge defects are shown to have the least effect on magnetization when the outer ring edge is armchair shaped. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.87.085434

Abstract | The Coulomb interaction and the correlation of a remote electron with a single layer of graphene is investigated in the presence of a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the graphene layer. The remote electron polarizes the electron gas in the graphene layer, which we describe in terms of excitations of virtual plasmons in graphene. The composite quasiparticle formed by electron plus polarization is called a plasmon polaron. The ground-state energy of this quasiparticle is calculated within perturbation theory for remote electrons in different environments.

Abstract | Using the tight-binding approach, we investigate the energy spectrum of square, triangular, and hexagonal MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Novel edge states emerge in MoS2 QDs, which are distributed over the whole edge which we call ring states. The ring states are robust in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The corresponding energy levels of the ring states oscillate as a function of the perpendicular magnetic field which are related to Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. Oscillations in the magnetic field dependence of the energy levels and the peaks in the magneto-optical spectrum emerge (disappear) as the ring states are formed (collapsed). The period and the amplitude of the oscillation decrease with the size of the MoS2 QDs.
