Abstract: We propose a scheme to generate the entangled state of two Lambda-type three-level atoms trapped in a cavity. The atoms are initially prepared in their excited state and the cavity in vacuum state. Each atom has two possibilities to deexcite to one of the ground states. If two different polarized photons are detected subsequently, it is sure that both atoms are in different ground states. But which atom is in which ground state cannot be determined, the atoms are thus prepared in a superposition of two ground states, i.e., an entangled state. In comparison with the proposal of Hong and Lee [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 237901 (2002)], the requirement of a single polarized photon source can be avoided in our scheme.

Abstract: The deviation effect of spinor mode from the single-mode for a spin-1 Bose gas of trapped atoms is studied beyond the mean field theory. Based on the effective Hamiltonian with nondegenerated level of the collective spin states, the splitting level of the system energy due to the deviation effect has been calculated. For the large condensates of (87)Rb and (23)Na with atom number N > 10(5), the splitting fraction of the energy, arising from the magnetization exhibited by the trapped Bose gas, is found to have a typical order of (10(-4) similar to 10(-8)), decreasing as N(-2) for (87)Rb and increasing as -N(-2) for 23 Na, respectively.

Abstract: Ibis work illustrates the development of X-ray fluorescence tomography and polycapillary based confocal imaging towards a three-dimensional (313), quantitative analytical method with lateral resolution levels down to the 2-20 mum scale. Detailed analytical characterization is given for polycapillary based confocal XRF imaging, which is a new variant of the 3D micro-XRF technique. Applications for 2D/3D micro-XR-F are illustrated for the analysis of biological (zooplankton) and geological samples (microscopic inclusions in natural diamonds and fluid inclusions in quartz). Based on confocal imaging, fully three-dimensional distributions of trace elements could be obtained, representing a significant generalization of the regular 2D scanning technique for micro-XRF spectroscopy. The experimental work described in this paper has been carried out at the ESRF ID18F microfluorescence end-station and at HASYLAB Beam Line L.

Abstract: Tetrahedral chain ordering in the Sr2MnGaO5 structure is studied using electron diffraction (ED) and high-resolution electron microscopy. The ED patterns show the presence of satellite reflections, which indicate a commensurately modulated structure with a = 5.4056(8) Angstrom b 16.171(3) Angstrom, c = 5.5592(7) Angstrom, q – 1/2c*, superspace group Immma(00gamma,)s00. The Superstructure arises due to ordering of the two types of symmetry related tetrahedral chains (L and R) according to a ... LRLR ... sequence, where L and R chains alternate along the c-axis within the same (GaO) layer. Numerous defects at different structural levels were observed, comprising interleaving L and R chains, violation of the ... LRLR ... chain sequence within one layer, different stacking modes of the ... LRLR ... ordered layers with subsequent alternation of blocks of different width along the h-axis of the brownmillerite subcell and island fragmentation of the modulated superstructure. By in situ heating ED experiments it is found that the long-range ordering of the tetrahedral chains is stable tip to 665degreesC and is completely suppressed at 905degreesC. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. Abstract: We present a model of pressure effects of a two-band superconductor based on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy with two order parameters. The parameters of the theory are pressure as well as temperature dependent. New pressure effects emerge as a result of the competition between the two bands. The theory then is applied to MgB2. We identify two possible scenaria regarding the fate of the two Q subbands under pressure, depending on whether or not both subbands are above the Fermi energy at ambient pressure. The splitting of the two subbands is probably caused by the E-2g, distortion. If only one subband is above the Fermi energy at ambient pressure (scenario I), application of pressure diminishes the splitting and it is possible that the lower subband participates in the superconductivity. The corresponding crossover pressure and Gruneisen parameter are estimated. In the second scenario both bands start above the Fermi energy and they move below it, either by pressure or via the substitution of Mg by Al. In both scenaria, the possibility of electronical topological transition is emphasized. Experimental signatures of both scenaria are presented and existing experiments are discussed in the light of the different physical pictures.

Abstract: We investigate low-temperature magnetotransport of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases subjected to one-dimensional periodic magnetic and electric modulations. Our previous quantum perturbation theory is extended to lower temperatures and the energy broadening due to impurity scattering is incorporated. Numerical calculations are made for situations where several Landau bands overlap. We find that the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are dominated by collisional resistance. The amplitudes of the SdH oscillations are strongly modulated and the positions of the SdH minima switch between even and odd Landau-level filling factors, in the resistance both parallel and perpendicular to the one-dimensional modulation. This is a consequence of the internal structure (i.e., smeared out van Hove singularities) of overlapping Landau bands. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with recent experiments.

Abstract: The behavior of excitons in spatially modulated magnetic fields is described taking into account the exciton spin contribution. The results show that the exciton trapping in periodic magnetic fields is possible and dependent on the modulation profile.

Abstract: The double phosphate Ca9In(PO4)(7) was obtained by solid-state reaction and was studied by room and high-temperature Xray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, second-harmonic generation (SHG) technique, differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric and conductivity measurements. The beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) room-temperature phase is related to the mineral whitlockite and is similar to beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2). It has space group R (3) over barc, with unit cell parameters: a = 10.4008(1) Angstrom, c = 37.272(1) Angstrom, Z = 6. The structure was refined by the Rietveld method (R-wp = 4.69, R-I = 1.81). A reversible first-order beta <----> beta' phase transition of the ferroelectric type with T-c = 902 K is revealed by SHG, differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric measurements. The centrosymmetric beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) (973 K) has space group R (3) over barc, a = 10.4611(2) Angstrom, c = 37.874 (1) Angstrom (R-wp = 4.27, R-I = 4.11). Compared to the low-temperature beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) structure, beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) can be described as an orientational disordering of the P1O(4) tetrahedra together with a calcium disordering on the M3 site. Abstract: Using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory we investigated the dependence of the magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconducting rings on their thickness. Abstract: Nickel foams were used as catalysts to dissociate acetylene and deposit carbon atoms. Graphite nanofibers with distinct structures were developed at 550degreesC with nickel foams pretreated with hydrogen. HREM observations showed that the graphite layers of the nanofibers were aligned at a certain angle to the fiber axis. It is suggested that hydrogen treatment and metal catalysts have a tremendous impact on the yields and microstructures of the graphite nanofibers. The growth mechanism of these fish-bone graphite nanofibers is also discussed.

Abstract: The use of an energy-filtering held emission gun transmission electron microscope (CM30 FEG Ultratwin) allows, apart from imaging morphologies down to nanometer scale, the fast acquisition of high-resolution element distributions. Electrons that have lost energy corresponding to characteristic inner-shell loss edges are used to form the element maps. The production of Ultra Large-Scale Integration (ULSI) devices with dimensions below 0.25 mum requires among others the formation of a multilayer metallization scheme by means of repeatedly applying the deposition and etching of dielectrics and metals. In this work the evolution of the surface chemical species on etched Al lines in a post-etch cleaning process has been investigated by energy filtering transmission electron microscopy, with the aim to understand the role of each process step on the removal of the etching residues. Abstract: The early growth stages of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond on a solgel TiO2 film with buried ultra dispersed diamond seeds (UDD) have been studied. In order to investigate the diamond growth mechanism and understand the role of the TiO2 layer in the growth process, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-filtered TEM and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) techniques were applied to cross sectional diamond film samples. We find evidence for the formation of TiC crystallites inside the TiO2 layer at different diamond growth stages. However, there is no evidence that diamond nucleation starts from these crystallites. Carbon diffusion into the TiO2 layer and the chemical bonding state of carbon (sp2/sp3) were both extensively investigated. We provide evidence that carbon diffuses through the TiO2 layer and that the diamond seeds partially convert to amorphous carbon during growth. This carbon diffusion and diamond to amorphous carbon conversion make the seed areas below the TiO2 layer grow and bend the TiO2 layer upwards to form the nucleation center of the diamond film. In some of the protuberances a core of diamond seed remains, covered by amorphous carbon. It is however unlikely that the remaining seeds are still active during the growth process.

Abstract: The local and average crystal structures and magnetic properties of the oxygen-deficient perovskite Sr2Fe1.5Cr0.5O5+y were studied using powder X-ray and neutron diffraction, neutron-pair distribution function analysis, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. This material crystallizes in the cubic Pm3̅m space group, with a = 3.94491(14) Å. The oxygen vacancies are distributed randomly throughout the perovskite-type structure, and the average coordination number of the Fe(Cr) sites is 5. Refinement of the neutron diffraction data indicates y 0.05. This is in discordance with an earlier report on a material with the same nominal composition and cell constant. Electron energy-loss Cr L2,3-edge spectroscopy shows that Cr3+ is present, which is also contrary to previous speculation. Neutron-pair distribution function studies show that a brownmillerite-like model involving ordered vacancies and alternating octahedral and tetrahedral coordination at the metal sites, gives a better description of the local structure out to 5 Å. A remarkable phenomenon determined by neutron diffraction in Sr2Fe1.5Cr0.5O5 is the occurrence of a long-range G-type antiferromagnetic ordering with Tc ≈ 565 K because cubic oxygen-deficient perovskites with B-site disorder usually do not undergo transitions to magnetically ordered states. The observation of long-range antiferromagnetic order and the Tc value are in accordance with previous Mössbauer spectroscopic studies.

Abstract: We have investigated the magnetic depth profile of an epitaxial Fe3O4 thin film grown directly on a semiconducting ZnO substrate by soft x-ray resonant magnetic reflectometry (XRMR) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Consistent chemical profiles at the interface between ZnO and Fe3O4 are found from both methods. Valence selective EELS and XRMR reveal independently that the first monolayer of Fe at the interface between ZnO and Fe3O4 contains only Fe3+ ions. Besides this narrow 2.5 Å interface layer, Fe3O4 shows magnetic bulk properties throughout the whole film making highly efficient spin injection in this system feasible.
